  • India Pulls Up E-Commerce Giants | Is ONDC a Gamechanger? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
India has asked e-commerce giants to stop "dark patterns" that trick users into purchasing a product. Officials are betting on a self-regulatory system to end manipulative tactics. What are these "dark patterns"? And can India's ONDC be a gamechanger in this space? Palki Sharma tells you.

Amazon commonly do a thing with some products where you go to buy something and you have two options, buy as a one-off purchase, or buy as a subscription, and the subscription option is always selected by default so you'll get periodically charged for a repeat order in the future.

Neither Walmart nor Target have this “Subscribe & Save” feature.

I have seen much more that these. If these are scams, what do you call the following - robbery?
    1. Adobe products have an exit cost, which means that there is a cost worth 6 months of subscription for removing the payment method. They might have improved it now, but they were doing it only for India (and other selected countries) in 2018. I used CS for only 2 months (Rs. 1500), but had to pay for 6 more months.
    2. In WSJ, my card was charged for 1 month when I tried to opt-out of it. This is what they told: 'you have to pay for at least one month for using the trial, but we can stop future billing'.
    3. Times Prime subscription bundle is slightly better, but it deceives in telling people that it includes certain subscriptions as a part of the package. In reality, some are inclusions; other are only discounts. In other words, you are paying twice for the same subscription.

Why is differential pricing a problem as long as the pricing is displayed to the user upfront? If this is a problem, the government should first crack down on Rs. 100 water bottles sold movie theaters, airports etc. What's worse is that there is no alternate option in these situations. At least in food apps, I can choose not to order if I think it is pricey. But, movie theaters don't let water from outside, so the only option is to pay 4 times the normal price.

Best option is to opt for remote work and go to rural India. Where we will get clean food, clean water and clean air. We can save our health, money and what not? Online shopping addiction is a real concern in today's digital age. The ease of browsing through endless products, making purchases with a single click, and the thrill of receiving packages can be addictive. However, excessive online shopping can lead to financial strain, debt, and a loss of control over spending habits. It can also negatively impact mental health, relationships, and productivity. Recognizing the signs of addiction, setting limits, seeking support, and finding healthier alternatives for emotional fulfillment are essential steps to overcome online shopping addiction and regain a healthier balance in life.

There are lot of scams also happening with online platforms. I bought a Noise smartwatch from Amazon and was delivered a tiffin box. I have complained numerous times and they are still investigating. It's been a tremor and trauma of pathetic customer service. They do not want to accept their mistake despite having video evidence of unboxing the package and just making excuses to buy more time. I have decided to register complaint with consumer court for fraud and cheating. So far it has been an extremely frustrating experience.
