- Turbulent Times Ahead for Indian Aviation? | Between the Lines with Palki Sharma
India is on the cusp of mega aviation boom. But airfare hikes and airlines going bust could derail India's aim to become the world's largest aviation market. Several airlines have run aground including the recent budget carrier Go First. So why do airlines keep folding in India despite growing demand? And are there turbulent times ahead for Indian aviation? Palki Sharma tells you on this episode of Between the Lines.

That is hype, Civil Aviation field will collapse soon .it is bad investment. Either There shld bechange in policy and regulate airfare and airport which sells food is not affordable. Something Civil aviation shld learn from Railway .
One more wish is Why Private Hospitals charges more for treatment, if patients family feels they robbed how they shld get accountability,is there any system ? Pls makes some useful content regarding this madam.
My mistake as a common man of India is that I booked advance ticket in Go First Airlines and now my money is stuck there. What is my fault in this? No Govt, No minister is listening our plight.
The ministers and the govt are very good friends with the rich owners of the airline. Never forget that.
Go First is bankrupt what can the govt do while it is still in legal proceedings.

India just need faster trains as a 1st alternative to air travel. Air travel is going to become unaffordable, because of multiple reasons.
Another alternative is more hub and spoke models for airlines. New delhi - jaipur - mumbai or new delhi - madhya pradesh- maharashtra.
Regulations will bleed airlines. More supply of smaller aircrafts is needed.
Another slap on the face of the common man
"RateGain" - a company which has deployed it's dynamic AI algorithm to major airlines like AirIndia,Indigo and many international airlines is the main culprit of this immediate price hike.
Airlines need more efficient planes like A350s than just A320 neos which though are efficient aren't the cheapest when it comes to RASK and fuel economy.
Don't think a fast train like Vande Bharat will reduce time to travel between say Delhi and Bangalore!
Ask our PM he is the face of Indian railways
Fast train fares will be also beyond normal people affordability. Believing Tata and Adani and the monopoly giving BJP government will be your suffering. They will only feed you religious stuff which is worse than fentanyl...morons
Because of vandebharat reduced time travel, good service & afforable fares I now opt for train travel is most routes. No crowded airport hassle, reaching hours n hours early issue gone plus Delhi metro connectivity to all railway station has made it extremely convenient. All of a sudden I travel every month to one location even repeat my journey. Wish I could afford to do that same via airlines without burning a hole in my pocket
modi has done this
Carry a portable airbag in the train
😂😂
I dont see much difference in travel time by vande bharat. 8 hour travel got reduced to 7.5 hours. That's all. Vande bharat provides premium services for comforts for a passenger. Its not an alternative to air travel. Time ripe for mega high speed rail infra development.

The distance between LAX and LAS (380 Km) is very small compared to MUM to DEL (1137 Km). Thus in US means 80$/380km = 0.21 dollars/km and in India, 170$/1137km=0.14 dollars/km. A more logical comparison is Seattle to Los Angles which is about 954 miles (1535 km) and costs 247$. The cost per km is now 247$/1535km=0.16 dollars/km. Even with PPP, 247 $ is a lot of money in dollars for this distance when you realize there is no other effective way of public transport in US. A train between the is more costlier than the flight at $351 when compared to a first AC train ticket at Rs. 4635 in rajdhani that is about 60 dollars. Also all the ticket fare in US is before tax calculation whereas the fares in India include most of the tax. I understand the cost is high for the common man but it is still cheaper than US. The flight tickets in US are predominantly booked only for the seat and a carry on bag. Every checked in bag is to be paid as add on which is another 30 dollars(minimum varies with flyer). Palki always try to fit the fake statistic to the narrative for views.
Well done and thank you; saved me the trouble of research and calculations.👏👏
Hi Sakthi, if we take PPP in account, then 247$ or even 300$ is not much. For ex. a McDonalds kitchen/counter employee working in US gets say around 15$ per hour, and if he works 8 hours per day for 3 days, then he can earn $360, enough to pay for the flight from Los Angeles to Seattle with tax and check-in baggage. Unfortunately, in India earning Rs 14,000 in 3 days is difficult for even someone working as a Manager. So, flying is expensive in India.
But I like your detailed outlook to it.
@@divyaa155 In that case the government needs to subsidise all fares, national and international to keep them in line with PPP.!
There's something called PPP, read upon it. Thanks anyway.
India should adapt new airline strategy like Ryann Air, Easyjet, Wizzair and Norwegian Airlines. They provide cheapest flight fares and bags up more profit with high ticket reservations and boasts the profitable market situation at all times amidst the other worlds saying "Aviation is the loss-making Industry"
Are you sure with Ryan Air 😅

Los Angeles to Las Vegas - Distance is approx. 400KMs. Mumbai to Delhi distance is around 1450KMs. The comparison is just not fare, how do you expect to compare their price to each other.
One more reason is the lack of a good number of trains with less number of stops.
In some trains one has to book at least 20 days in advance to get a confirmed berth.
7 days in advance booked lucknow to mumbai flight for 16k which was higher than my Mumbai to Singapore fare.. usual price was 4500 between lucknow to mumbai

After Ahmedabad Mumbai, BLR, Chennai, Hyderabad should be connected with High speed rail...

Every sector privatised by the government of India in the past few decades has had private sector participation but ruined by poor regulation and oversight, leading to rent-seeking by dominant private players. Civil aviation and telecom sectors are classic examples of how despite high demand only a few private players end up dominating the sector, mainly thru rent-seeking.
Yes, before reliance you had the reliable telecom under PSU which invents and deploys all the technologies without government funding. And always loss making.
@@TrendSuresh I get your sarcasm. But I believe Govt has no business running businesses. USA has been the largest economy since 1945 yet it doesn't even have a "PSU" in core sectors like defence production or telecom - both considered as "strategic sectors" by Govt of India, which is why it keeps loss-forever making BSNL & MTNL afloat with taxpayers' money. When a superpower can thrive without a public sector, surely a poor developing country can. In fact, India ought to spend precious taxpayers' money on core areas like high quality education & healthcare for everyone, infrastructure, etc. instead of wasting it on keeping loss-making PSUs afloat. Govt's job is to regulate nor run businesses.

Why does the Govt not realise that when air tickets are available for 4-5k one month prior to flight day, it doesn't mean airlines r selling at a loss at that price. why r prices mysteriously allowed to gravitate to 16-18k on day of departure unless we call it official blackmarketing of tickets in the name of dynamic fare pricing? Opening up airports which handle 737 neo / dreamliner at several places will produce a good standard passenger footfall and fixed price..
Eg : No point in expanding chennai airport , instead can make one at villupuram / Puducherry, expansion of Salem, thanjavur, tirunelveli...
Present situtation, all go to Chennai for flying to major destinations, leading to over priced tickets, rush at airport, delay in checking..

5:51 - Can someone elaborate the 3rd reason for airline failures - "Market Condition". When the market is booming - what kind of market conditions hamper airline profitability?
This is a valid point - there needs to be a thorough risk assessment.
Wonder if government is willing to cut high taxes for the airline industry, and if the deficit in tax amount for the government can be recovered if there is a substantial increase in airline traffic (because of cut taxes and subsequently reduced fare)?
Also, heard somewhere that fuel prices are very volatile for airlines because they are in dollars??? Not sure about that though. But, if so, then this is tough to get around.

Indications of high Income disparity. People prefer travelling by bus or train where they cap their expenses to a maximum of Rs. 3000-4000 for a one way trip even if it's on the busiest route. The thought of spending Rs. 5000 would be unimaginable for a person working in a white collar job bringing in Rs. 30k to 50k on an average per month. What to speak of the remaining Indians?
Additionally, although it isn't expensive to reach the airport given the public transportation available, the mass consumers are still under the opinion that transportation to reach the airport is expensive.
Edit: Cap the airfare rates to Rs. 3000 and see the boom! Airlines, AAI & the service providers will have to ramp up their airport infrastructure to handle that volume of passengers. I'm not sure if the aviation industry is well equipped to handle the volumes that you'd otherwise expect at the railways. Plus you have to consider high maintenance of the public spaces as overcrowding would most definitely lead to trashing of the spaces. You're dealing with the Indian masses who has very low mindfulness of general cleanliness.

2. Rs 3 lakh to 6 lakh - 5%
3. Rs 6 lakh to 9 lakh - 10%
4. Rs 9 lakh to Rs 12 lakh - 15%
5. Rs 12 lakh to Rs 15 lakh - 20%
6. Above Rs 15 lakh - 30%
I don't know where you are asked to pay 60% taxes. If you said so cause of taxes on different things that we buy etc. I don't know why we Indians have started comparing our lifestyles with western and other developed countries. Entertainment, restaurants, tourism, other stuff which does not come under our countries necessary goods, are luxury items and hence are taxed accordingly. We need to understand we have varied population in this country. Our per capita is $2000. According to that all the things mentioned above are luxury and if taxation is reduced so that all classes can afford these amenities it still will be the lower class that will suffer. Cause they will be able to enjoy the luxury but won't have basic stuff to survive and live. Higher class will be able to afford both easily.

If you want to travel cheaper domestically, just use the trains. The first class tickets were barely 5k last I checked. As to why something is becoming more expensive, it's simple demand and supply.
Looks like no stability in india as far airlines are concerned.
Let the market decide the winners - no government involvement. Such is the nature of a free market.
