India is on the cusp of mega aviation boom. But airfare hikes and airlines going bust could derail India's aim to become the world's largest aviation market. Several airlines have run aground including the recent budget carrier Go First. So why do airlines keep folding in India despite growing demand? And are there turbulent times ahead for Indian aviation? Palki Sharma tells you on this episode of Between the Lines.

India just need faster trains as a 1st alternative to air travel. Air travel is going to become unaffordable, because of multiple reasons.
Another alternative is more hub and spoke models for airlines. New delhi - jaipur - mumbai or new delhi - madhya pradesh- maharashtra.
Regulations will bleed airlines. More supply of smaller aircrafts is needed.

The distance between LAX and LAS (380 Km) is very small compared to MUM to DEL (1137 Km). Thus in US means 80$/380km = 0.21 dollars/km and in India, 170$/1137km=0.14 dollars/km. A more logical comparison is Seattle to Los Angles which is about 954 miles (1535 km) and costs 247$. The cost per km is now 247$/1535km=0.16 dollars/km. Even with PPP, 247 $ is a lot of money in dollars for this distance when you realize there is no other effective way of public transport in US. A train between the is more costlier than the flight at $351 when compared to a first AC train ticket at Rs. 4635 in rajdhani that is about 60 dollars. Also all the ticket fare in US is before tax calculation whereas the fares in India include most of the tax. I understand the cost is high for the common man but it is still cheaper than US. The flight tickets in US are predominantly booked only for the seat and a carry on bag. Every checked in bag is to be paid as add on which is another 30 dollars(minimum varies with flyer). In contrast Indian Airlines include a check-in luggage with their services. Please note that all values are approximated to the nearest sensible decimal. Hope it Helps!!

Hi Sakthi, if we take PPP in account, then 247$ or even 300$ is not much. For ex. a McDonalds kitchen/counter employee working in US gets say around 15$ per hour, and if he works 8 hours per day for 3 days, then he can earn $360, enough to pay for the flight from Los Angeles to Seattle with tax and check-in baggage. Unfortunately, in India earning Rs 14,000 in 3 days is difficult for even someone working as a Manager. So, flying is expensive in India.

Why does the Govt not realise that when air tickets are available for 4-5k one month prior to flight day, it doesn't mean airlines r selling at a loss at that price. why r prices mysteriously allowed to gravitate to 16-18k on day of departure unless we call it official blackmarketing of tickets in the name of dynamic fare pricing? Airlines weren't losing money at 4-5k where they sell seats. Nobody offers at a loss when one knows they can get 16-18k for that seat.

In contrast
Indian Airlines include a check-in luggage with their services. Please note that all values are approximated to the nearest sensible decimal. Hope it Helps!!
Copy pasted(from another commentor) and did my own research after, seems better calculation hence sharing.

Opening up airports which handle 737 neo / dreamliner at several places will produce a good standard passenger footfall and fixed price..
Eg : No point in expanding chennai airport , instead can make one at villupuram / Puducherry, expansion of Salem, thanjavur, tirunelveli...
Present situtation, all go to Chennai for flying to major destinations, leading to over priced tickets, rush at airport, delay in checking..

5:51 - Can someone elaborate the 3rd reason for airline failures - "Market Condition". When the market is booming - what kind of market conditions hamper airline profitability?
This is a valid point - there needs to be a thorough risk assessment.
Wonder if government is willing to cut high taxes for the airline industry, and if the deficit in tax amount for the government can be recovered if there is a substantial increase in airline traffic (because of cut taxes and subsequently reduced fare)?
Also, heard somewhere that fuel prices are very volatile for airlines because they are in dollars??? Not sure about that though. But, if so, then this is tough to get around.

Indications of high Income disparity. People prefer travelling by bus or train where they cap their expenses to a maximum of Rs. 3000-4000 for a one way trip even if it's on the busiest route. The thought of spending Rs. 5000 would be unimaginable for a person working in a white collar job bringing in Rs. 30k to 50k on an average per month. What to speak of the remaining Indians?
Additionally, although it isn't expensive to reach the airport given the public transportation available, the mass consumers are still under the opinion that transportation to reach the airport is expensive.
Edit: Cap the airfare rates to Rs. 3000 and see the boom! Airlines, AAI & the service providers will have to ramp up their airport infrastructure to handle that volume of passengers. I'm not sure if the aviation industry is well equipped to handle the volumes that you'd otherwise expect at the railways. Plus you have to consider high maintenance of the public spaces as overcrowding would most definitely lead to trashing of the spaces. You're dealing with the Indian masses who has very low mindfulness of general cleanliness.

The income tax slab rates under the new income tax regime will now be as follows:
      1. Rs 0 to Rs 3 lakh - 0% tax rate
      2. Rs 3 lakh to 6 lakh - 5%
      3. Rs 6 lakh to 9 lakh - 10%
      4. Rs 9 lakh to Rs 12 lakh - 15%
      5. Rs 12 lakh to Rs 15 lakh - 20%
      6. Above Rs 15 lakh - 30%
I don't know where you are asked to pay 60% taxes. If you said so cause of taxes on different things that we buy etc. I don't know why we Indians have started comparing our lifestyles with western and other developed countries. Entertainment, restaurants, tourism, other stuff which does not come under our countries necessary goods, are luxury items and hence are taxed accordingly. We need to understand we have varied population in this country. Our per capita is $2000. According to that all the things mentioned above are luxury and if taxation is reduced so that all classes can afford these amenities it still will be the lower class that will suffer. Cause they will be able to enjoy the luxury but won't have basic stuff to survive and live. Higher class will be able to afford both easily.

Indians just want freebies. They'll always play the 'gareeb card'. "Hum to gareeb hai jee" is their famous slogan. Poor people going to Dubai for vacation? Most people travelling on Mum-Del route by flights are businessmen who are anyway going to charge back to their business. And for the one with family, they always have the option to travel by train, so why complain?
