    Blade Runner's ending is the best! It's not a simple hero kills everyone. The movie ends with the antagonist overpowering the hero but remained the better person by not killing Deckard, but instead relaying a replicant's very human-like thoughts to Deckard, to us.. I was really really impressed by this scene

      Knowing how well the ending turned out, it's crazy to believe the original script ended with Deckard just shooting them.

      That's why it is non-sensical that Deckard suppose to be (according to Sir Ridley Scott himself) a replicant. It's licvidating the whole point of the "rain monologue", as that scene is about Deckard being changed by a dying androids last moments.

      He is more of a soulless guy, who is too much into his work. But it is like a necessity in his work, to be cold and not attaching any feelings to synthetics, to be more sufficient "terminator", but in this film of course he is changing, and changes his mind about them.

      There is an essay on christian meaning in blade runner. And its' the final level of lecture of that movie, the deepest and most fascinating. Even if I disagree with part of Dan Newland essay, some symbols are too obvious. In addition to his findings, we may wonder
      - why is Rachel named Rachel, and not Margareth ?
      - why is Tyrel corporation a pyramid and not a skycrapper ?

    For all those wondering about the Voight-Kampff test in the movie and how it works here is an explanation.
    Replicants are emotionally immature and have difficulty projecting emotions and/or concealing them. This is why the Blade Runner interrogating Leon worked out so quickly that Leon was a replicant. This is also why Roy Batty and Pris act so awkwardly, especially with that kiss, they are experiencing emotions they are not prepared for. They are highly intelligent adults with a child-like response to their own emotions- when they choose to outwardly express their emotions that is.
    Some replicants, in particular Nexus-6 ones, develop their own emotional responses and in the case of Rachel have no idea they are actually replicants. The Voight-Kampff test works by measuring emotional responses. Since the Blade Runners must have a list of emotional/physical responses which are linked to each individual replicant, then it is simply a matter of asking various probing questions to build an emotional response profile.
    Further questions are applied for cross-referencing and with each verbal response, and emotional response, from the replicant, a blade runner builds up a profile until he finds a match. These questions are often linked to a replicant's implanted memories. The profile created from the interrogation matches the profile which the Tyrell Corporation has issued in their records for each and every replicant. These records contain a replicant's: implanted memories, emotional pysche and pyschological profile.
    This is why Deckard had to ask up to 90 questions for Rachel; her verbal answers and emotional responses are highly advanced, mature and human. However on a subconscious level that initial profile is still there and thus detectable only to the most skilled of Blade Runners.
    That's why the Voight-Kampff test can make the distinction between human and replicant. The implanted memories are a crucial factor to understanding this test. Without this a human who is mentally disabled, slow or autistic, would be falsely identified as a replicant.
    ///
    Finally for Deckard I have a theory of my own. Deckard is human but some kind of personal tragedy befell him, something so severe it would have made him a recluse; housebound. I believe the Tyrell Corporation implanted memories, from someone else, to cushion the emotional trauma Deckard was experiencing and thus enabling him to manage his depression and continue working as a Blade Runner.
    But the man is still pretty beat down since he is a lonesome alcoholic. However he can still do his job. This is why Gaff, the other Blade Runner, places origami unicorns. The sight of which triggers a subconscious impulse in Deckard, an impulse which the Tyrell Corporation use to control him. Deckard hates his job, he hates coming out of retirement but he forces himself to keep going. The origami unicorn triggers, on a subconscious level, a possible vague feeling of hope, peace and tranquillity for Deckard. It is vague but just enough to see him through one dreary day after another.
    Deckard is human because he was not able to fight on par with the replicants. Deckard DREAMED of the unicorn, he never remembered it and the proof is simple- the man fell asleep, cue the unicorn sequence and the scene cuts to him starting as he had woken up from a quick doze. There is a big difference between a dream and a memory, and as far as I know the Tyrell Corporation do not appear to have the ability to dictate the dreams of a replicant.
    Whether Deckard is aware that the memories are implanted or not is unclear. A possible clue is in the final scene when he scrunches that origami unicorn in his hand with a look of understanding. Has he accepted that he no longer needs the implanted memories as emotional support when he has Rachel and the memory of Roy Batty's death- a death which profoundly moved Deckard and actually made him value his life?
    And think about it, if implanted memories could cushion the emotional responses of a replicant, wouldn't implanted memories have the same effect on a human?

    • @TheSwearingChef
      @TheSwearingChef 8 років тому +4

      +skatemetrix
      Why wouldTyrell waste resources on a human being though? That's not in their field of research nor is there any hint of such in the movie. Tyrell is only linked to their creations and nothing more. Your theory just doesn't mesh with the themes that are presented.
      To me, the question of whether Deckard is or isn't a replicant is up to the individual to decide based on what's presented. It is not to be taken sideways, imo.

    • @skatemetrix
      @skatemetrix 8 років тому +6

      +Ser Garlik I think it does mesh with the themes of Blade Runner and the biggest one being identity. Aside from the obvious two threads of: can a replicant ever be considered fully human; and does a replicant who thinks he is human be truly human?
      With my theory there is another thread about identity- can a person who knows he has implanted memories still believe he is the same person? Additionally, for a person who has implanted memories but does not realise this, does the person still have the same core personality before the procedure as he does afterwards?
      To be fair the using of implanted memories in the VK test to match a replicant's profile is not really implied that much, the main emphasis seems to be on emotional responses. However, reading between the lines, this hast to happen because a test relying solely on emotional responses could never make a distinction between replicant and human. So often in Blade Runner there are hidden themes and plot devices which are there in the background. It's a simple plot with an awful lot packed into it.
      ///
      Whether Deckard is human or replicant, well at first glance both views could be correct. Evidence for Deckard being human: not as strong as other Replicants, his eyes never glint/glow in the dark and his emotional responses seem pretty human and developed.
      Evidence for Deckard being replicant: the unicorn sequence if it is interpreted as a memory, Deckard's collection of photos and finally Gaff planting origami unicorns implying Deckard has implanted memories.
      I don't like the idea that Deckard is a replicant, why would the company create a replicant who thinks he is human and who has none of the advantages of a replicant? I can understand Rachel's existence as just another experiment of the Tyrell Corporation. But Deckard's "creation" is a real stretch and also really tarnishes the character's personal development.
      But the case for Deckard being human is not 100% watertight either. Again the unicorn sequence and Gaff's unicorn origamis.
      With the implanted memory theory Deckard is still human, it explains Gaff's odd behaviour, it adds a new facet to the biological capabilities of the Tyrell Corporation AND it creates further mysteries/questions about the nature of human identity regarding implanted memories.
      And the best thing about it is that there is still a mystery remaining- does Deckard realise he has implanted memories? So instead of the mystery being; is Deckard replicant or human? It now becomes; is Deckard's personality forever altered if he is not aware of the memory implants, or is he the same person whether he is aware, or not, of the procedure?
      And again with both mysteries, does it really matter?

      In the book, Deckard was effected by the radioactive dust. And had depression too, which sort of backs up your theory as well.

    • @chasey4069
      @chasey4069 4 роки тому +2

      But, since the radioactive dust was only added in the second movie (plus the war) i guess we have to scratch that. Either way, I do believe he is human experiencing some sort of mental illness. In the book also, it delves deeper into what it is to be a Bounty hunter (Blade Runner) and what it does to your mind and stuff.

Was the ZLF the one's who attempted the assasination of the president of space or were they the ones who began the zognoid civil war, but then who started the subsequent zognoid revolution, zognoid reformation, and zognoid revolt.

    I refuse to believe Decker is a Replicant. It will make his character arc, described here, worthless. I believe Gaff left that origami unicorn there, not because of a dream, but to tell Decker that he could've "retired" Rachael and he didn't. Even if it was about the dream, there is no other evidence that Decker is a Replicant.

      +Daniel Gehring you seem to have trouble grasping the core principles of fiction and internal consistency. I'm sorry to see that. Though, addressing the original topic, if he's a replicant he's awfully weak. As in, way weaker than any other.

    • @BigGator5
      @BigGator5 8 років тому +11

      Android 19 Right? Why design a weak replicant to go after stronger ones? The logic of this movie just completely falls apart if he is one.

    • @danielgehring7437
      @danielgehring7437 8 років тому +9

      Android 19
      It's actually kind of the opposite. I'm all for internal consistency in my movies, which is why I rebel against the internet's collective policy of trying to force a certain finality onto those movies which have ambiguous endings. We don't know if Deckard's a replicant _because the movie didn't want us to know for certain._ It's moot, destructive, and does a disservice to a great piece of cinema to try to force one's own perspective onto something that was specifically designed to _be_ ambiguous. It's like trying to explain a joke to your friend that didn't laugh.. not only won't it work, it'll just ruin it for the rest of the audience.

      +Eddie Scene It's based on the book called Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? To be honest, I never actually fully got/loved Blade Runner until I read that book. The movie is a COMPLETELY different perspective. I'd recommend the book. I love the movie after having read it. The part that always felt it was missing in my from the movie in my mind was filled :D
      He did a BUNCH of things that have got adapted.
      Of his bigger adaptations he did:
      A Scanner Darkly
      The Minority Report
      Pay Cheque
      The Adjustment Bureau
      The books/short stories are great. I'd highly recommend Minority Report in terms of something to augment a movie.

    The photography of Blade Runner is amazing, the constant dark-bluish colors in contrast with several colorful lights spotted in the background give it an realistic feel but also makes it look like a dream, reinforcing the idea of dystopia. Most movie nowadays just use full HD cameras with pretty much no meaning in the filming, making them look almost the same.

    So... are you going to discuss the HIDDEN meaning in a different video, or does your title mean to imply "the basic shit everyone knows from having just seen the film"?

    • @TheGuy735
      @TheGuy735 8 років тому

      It's satire. Maybe you should watch more of these videos before making yourself look like and idiot.

    • @jinx184
      @jinx184 8 років тому +1

      Cryogen It's not a satire of the film. Is it a satire of those videos that discuss neat trivia FROM film? Well, maybe, but it's played awfully straight.
      Is the hidden meaning a satire of the general context of subtext and deeper meaning in visual media?
      Also, a persons first exposure to a new form of media, or a new channel, or a new person, is very important. Are you aware of the phrase "good first impression"? A channel that produces video content is often inclined to release content that will leave a good first impression on new and first time viewers, because that will increase their number of repeat views and viewer retention. That, in turn, will contribute to their overall advertising income and promotion on the platform on which they've chosen to release their content. If they leave a poor first impression, there is a chance that the viewer in question will choose to not actually watch more videos- since they, you know, disliked the first one- and will be, in fact, inclined to form a negative mental bias against the channel.
      but nah ill just watch more of their shitty videos, thanks pal you're a peach love you

    • @jinx184
      @jinx184 8 років тому +1

      Cryogen Okay yeah, I got you. No hard feelings, and sorry my response to you was also kind of sarcastic and mean-spirited. I should know better than to be a jerk, lol.
      Anyway yeah, I got a little overly critical with the video and my initial comment, because I really love this film and got excited there'd be some new little things I hadn't known previously, and felt disappointed. I guess if you had only seen Blade Runner once, or not watched it yet, this would probably be an alright video?
