If that is the case, I am incredibly impressed that he can come up with something so fitting to the character and the scene right there on the spot. I can't help to think that he must be incredible at putting himself in his characters perspective.
I believe he asked Ridley Scott if he could say those lines. Ad-lib is perhaps the wrong term. Hauer was very into his character, and felt that the scene needed 'poetry' from his character. There is an interview online in which he discusses this. Try 'blade runner hauer interview' - that might find it.
+tim weatherill If i recall correctly, most of the lines were rewritten a bit; to be shorter; after all, dying leaves little time for a grand monologue, but the very last one, the most iconic one at that, was only thought of minutes before the shot.
Blade runner is why I fell in love with the art of cinema. I'll never forget the night I watched it. I was 18, and had never experienced anything like it before. I still get chills listening to the soundtrack.

Not only is Blade Runner an incredible film to look at for its world, ethical conundrums, scientific questions and music -- but on the topic of listening... the script, really listen to the words, some of it is so profound and has a duality to it; just like the movie with the humans and the replicants.

FireDragon04 Blade Runner was instantly my favorite film when it was first released. The some twenty years ago I listened to it on headphones, and it was a brand new experience. I couldn't believe how much more layered it was. From the music to the sounds of the streets. Many sounds that I heard for the first time.
To this day i keep hearing a mechanical voice "Walk now, walk now" in my head every time I cross the street.
It was Hans Zimmer who ended up composing for the new film.
It was different, but you could feel the Vangelis's heritage.
I thought that would be impossible, but it's like Vangelis's soundtrack had a child.
I witnessed a miracle.
Haha Hans Zimmer just puts his name on any good movie music and it becomes his, when it fact it is not. It is just a way of branding nowadays, Zimmer has become so mainsrteam its not even funny
Zimmer's score had some really terrible moments. Not even close to being as iconic as Vangelis' score

I recently saw Blade Runner 2049, and while the score may not quite live up to the innovation of Vangelis, I think that Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch did a fantastic job of blending it into the visual atmosphere of the film. The score combined with Roger Deakins' breathtaking cinematography created a worthy successor to the original and a stellar piece of filmmaking in its own right.
not a worthy sucesor tbh, the story was a bit cliché, still the cinematography was fantastic and the sountrack wasn't bad, i just saw it and im a bit dissapointed

@@crysischampion3530 i came to the conclusion that if you completely forget about Blade Runner, this new one can be counted as a "good" science fiction movie, i really liked the scenarios but i didn't like how it was shot... the thing is the first blade runner wasn't an action movie at all, it had action but the way it was told made action appear as something secondary, this one is a classic fiction-action full of explotions and stuff
@@Mrnonombre1990 I can see what you mean, but the sequel is far from an action movie. With its run-time and the few amount of action scenes, I didn't think its was too much or overbearing. I enjoyed the shots, even though a few of them of K walking around could have been shortened a tiny bit.
@@crysischampion3530 About the shots thing, i was thinking the opposite, the movie was filmed with a lot of short shots as if it was an action movie, that's what i disliked, and it didn't really let you apreciate the beautiful scenarios enough. The camera was constantly jumping around from one angle to another. And about the other thing you are probably right, i may re-watch it sometime.

Always amazing to see this kind music analysis, hardest part of film studies.
Storytellers i studied audio engineering in uni and we had to collaborate a lot with film majors and artists whether it be writing scores for their projects or instillations. It made me appreciate film that much more and the role music and sound design play in these situations.
That's why you become a musician as well as a film maker. It becomes far easier to discern what emotions music is trying to elicit when you've tried to do it yourself.
M Phylo that's a good point and that's why I've tried experimenting around with making film to see if I can create something cool.
The music ties so much into the movie like specificity tuned towards each action in the movie. That's why it's so different, instead of a song with meaning, it creates a series of s sounds to enhance the mood for each action and dialog. That's something not easily done.

Rachael's Song always sends shivers down my spine. The way Vangelis layers sounds in it is sofisticated, yet it emanates an otherwordly elegance, weaving a deep emotional universe around the character. It feels like each instrument mirrors a feature, a mood, something that can be traced back to Rachael.
Cyberpunk 2077 better have slot of punk in it, and maybe Blade Runner music in it

Michael McCann would be a good fit. His music for Deus Ex Human Revolution and Mankind Devided reminds me of Vangelus. They can't use the actual music from Blade Runner because Warner Brothers owns the rights. Plus hearing music from that movie would take me out of the game.

Easily one of the greatest scores of all time. It's just as much a work of genius art as the film itself. Probably my favourite non-leitmotif score.
Hi Jim! I also happen to love the music a lot! But what makes you think, it is not a leifmotiv score? I would say it has plenty of leifmotifs but also that great sounddesign. For example what we hear in the end of this video. It is the love-theme. I am courious for your opinion!

great point about not being able to tell where the music ends and the world begins! this is also true of one of my all-time favorite scores: mica levi's work on UNDER THE SKIN, where the haunting ambience and sound design of the restrained sci-fi reality transforms into an hypnotic, ephemeral trance that is terrifyingly inhuman... fitting for a movie about a man-eating alien
Vangelis is also a musical genius composing his first music at the age of 3! Seriously going to miss that in BR2.

"Memories of Green" is still in my top 10 personal favourites "songs" ever. That soundtrack is so amazing. Well, the movie is. I remember to read the original story, and it was so short and full of misteries. The movie kept the mistery, created an amazing atmosphere, which of course includes the soundtrack, and the storyline is just perfect. That's a masterpiece.
Blade Runner would not be nearly as a compelling film were it not for Vangelis' sizeable contribution. Another film that very effective blurs the line between score and sound design is Darren Aronofsky's "Pi". would love to hear your thoughts on that.

And why I only support the director's cut without Deckard's narration, because of this unbelievable groundbreaking score.
when I first watched it, as a teenager, it was with narration and I love it. Later I saw director's cut and, IMO, it gained some but it lost some too. With narration, it feels more like film noir and detective film from the 40s.

In 1990 I dubbed an audiotape of the entire movie off a VHS copy. I listened to this movie for years driving around in my '89 Integra.
I'm confident in Johansson. His score for Arrival was beautiful, unique-sounding and, like Blade Runner, felt baked into the movie itself.
He left the movie for unknown reasons. Did they scrap his music and start over?
It's Hanz Zimmer now. He usually does a good job with grand cinematic scores, but usually shows a sense of understanding music and its role in movies so I hope he scores the movie well.
Actually it's mostly Benjamin Wallfisch now, with Zimmer supervising him.

Like Stories of Old I'm really only familiar, offhand, w his music here in Blade Runner as well as Chariots Of Fire.
In the early 90’s, I acquired a Vangelis compilation CD of his film scores called: “Themes”. I listened to it fervently, almost relentlessly at the time. Although synthesized music hasn’t earned the respect of “the Classical” music community, I found experiencing his compositions, equally as emotionally provocative and transcendent as, say... Mahler’s Symphony No.5 in C Sharp Minor IV.

I've done a few hours of thinking both about the CS-80 and Blade Runner, I've seen hours of Vangelis playing the CS-80 and other synths in videos, I've considered buying a CS-80 for a few times in my past - and what you said there, this is a beautiful, great thought that never occurred to me! Nowadays, sadly, many artists and filmmakers don't put as much emphasis on crafting excellency in their soundtracks.
Some do, but it's underrepresented.
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-eater anything by Carter Burwell or Mark Mothersbaugh will probably be good. See: In Bruges or Anomalisa.

The more I immerse myself within the world of BR & 2049 the more convinced I am these are my favorite Sci Fi films of all time
Anyone that's listened to the soundtracks of Sicario and Arrival will know that the soundtrack to Blade Runner 2049, in the hands of Jóhannsson, will surely be spectacular.

Pitty Jóhann Jóhannsson was pulled from the film. Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch joined In July 2017. In September, Jóhannsson's agent confirmed that he was no longer involved, and that he was contractually forbidden from commenting on the situation.

2049's soundtrack was more abrasive than the original's. It augmented the violence of the movie, though I felt the incorporation of Vangelis's themes were not done as tastefully as they could have been. I believe it failed to draw from the emotions of the scenery and characters as well as the original Blade Runner soundtrack did. More stark and extreme, rather than inspiring and beautiful
Vangelis work on bladerunner covered far more than what a film composer normally does today. Only a few composers in television or film truly worked in the same manner. that is undertaking just about every aspect of a movies audio. Vangelis did the score, soundtrack, sound engineering, foley and more. which is why The sound of bladerunner is all one harmonious element. Vangelis working off the cuff, gave the film a fourth leading character. The film itself spoke of itself in its music and sound. Whenever this direction is taken a film or even television show has way more gravitas than without. the difference between having a meal made from scratch oppose to buying a ready made tv dinner. Jan Hammers work for miami vice was similar, in that he too created both the music the score and soundtrack. which game miami vice a signature sound style and mood that without just doesnt come off as authentic. Another great compose is John williams, whos work in Jaws goes far beyond what most people realize. Only recently has Hans Zimmer expaned his works depth, adding more layers as a character within the film, as in Inception. Our hopes is that the composer for the new film truly understands this. but odds are probably not. Far too many people are put in such positions with a sequel or even prequel and forget there job is not to give us something new but instead to carry on whats been done. The new trailer has elements thats truly inspired by vangelis, and as such the clips feel like bladerunner, but then the audio shift to a modern style cliche of what we always here with such trailers. just as soon as the audio hits, it looses its depth. and layers, becoming one dimensional, and it cheapens the visuals. the audio making the visuals feel more like a television series. That the problem with todays composers, they are not studied in orchestral nor sound design, so they conceptualize audio in the same manner as someone making dance music.Flat one dimensional. Tron legacy, has a great soundtrack, but was extremely one dimensional because the composers Daft Punk makes dance music. music without depth. without layers music thats not a character saying something. Vangelis work is the heart and soul of bladerunner, flanked only by the films cinematography and set design. Vangelis is a world builder, completely understanding its a living breathing element.
I was just thinking about this the other day when I saw the new Blade Runner trailer! You may have read my mind with this video, but as usual, you take concepts I only know how to sense and bring them into a beautifully simplified light. You make analysing things feel like discovering great, not-so-hidden knowledge and less like grasping for bullshit where it was never supposed to be in the first place. I grew up listening to this soundtrack, but now listening fills me with an extra sense of wonder!

Fantastic video man! I really enjoyed it. The blade Runner soundtrack always brings tears to my eyes for some reason, its hauntingly beautiful. Especially the "Tears in Rain" moment man.

Bladerunner doesnt HAVE a soundtrack, it has ‘atmosphere’ incorporated so tightly into the body of the film like the veins and arteries of a human body.....or a replicant. Spine tingling, evocative, emotive and erotic in places. Vangelis MAGIC. I have watched this movie so many times i forget how many.....over 1000! I know every note, intonation, reverb, sustain, echo and heartbeat. The lifeblood and heartbeat IS the music. Take it away and add say a 1920 gangster sountrack or anything BUT the original and the film dies. Well analysed!

you nailed it. whenever i get asked about why i love the film so much, i always say the same thing: the perfect amalgamation of video AND audio. never before, or since, has a soundtrack been so 100% perfect for the film it's in. it permeates the body and sticks to the sould like a thick layer of treacle. i say, if you close your eyes, and just listen to this music without having ever seen the film, you could picture the film in your head, and be pretty damn close. thats how good it is. when you can see a flick in your head, and get the immediate sensation of a gritty sci fi noir from it, the soundtrack has gone above and beyond. nice job !

No, his music would've been too much like the original according to Villeneuve.
Hans Zimmer scored BR2049 and has has scored almost every Christopher Nolan film as well, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator and much more. Inception is Hans’ best work imho. He’s also scoring Denis’ Dune remake set for 2020.
It's too bad they don't make music like this nowadays, but then again who does?
Hans Zimmer's score for Interstellar surely comes close. It's not electronic, but it certainly employs the same sort of techniques as Vangelis's work. Vangelis isn't flawless either - his score for Alexander, for instance...actually, that whole film.
Or Mica Levi's score for Under the Skin - that's probably a better example, but neither of these films would work without their scores - they are intrinsically tied.

When I saw "Listening To Blade Runner" I got really excited because I thought you were talking about the audiobook. I listened to it maybe 2 years ago and it was transformative in my life. The video, withstanding it's variance from my desire, was still beautiful. You create art with every frame in your videos Evan and I cannot thank you enough.

And this time i think is my favorite, because I believe sound designers get far less praise then they deserve compared to just composers. Thank you so much for this video ! I'm working for a OST right now and I felt like the best way to serve my friend's movie was to get involved as much as I could in the writing and directing process of the movie. This way we managed to create a common universe that served both the script and the music because they fed on each over. I really feel like in movies, music and frame are the 2 main characters.

When Bladerunner came out Ridley Scott was mainly known as a visual stylist. I remember thinking as I watched and listened to Bladerunner in a theater "Where does the music end and where do the sound effects begin?"I sometimes put the movie on while I try to fall asleep and just let it flow over me without looking at the images. I went back and carefully listened to Alien and some of the creepy work Goldsmith was doing, but also some of the subtle sound effects work. Then Someone To Watch Over Me came out and its sinched it. Scott was as great at blending atmospheric music and sound as he was with visuals. Take another look at his Channel no 5 commercial with the song I Din't Want To Set The World On Fire... As we now know Jóhann Jóhannsson didn't end up composing the soundtrack for Bladerunner 2049, but it would be interesting to hear his initial compositions for the film..

They're pretty good, but it's not close enough to Vangelis. No wonder Denis Villeneuve fired him from the project. To me, it's a little too 'modern' sounding. A little too much like Deus Ex or Ghost in the Shell.
First time I'm hearing them, that first track is definitely far too modern. Nowhere near the scale of what Zimmer and Wallfisch came up with. He just wasn't right for the project it seems. RIP though still a great composer in his time.

No it’s not, but they’re entirely different. Blade Runner is great in its own way, but if you want to grade it on the scale of “greatness” that Star Wars uses it comes up short
I actually think Blade Runner was even more groundbreaking in its visual effects than Star Wars. Many movies pilfer scenery directly from Blade Runner, such as Attack of the Clones, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Solo: A Star Wars Story. Even video games like Snatcher and Final Fantasy 7 and 13 ripped off it's aesthetic. Star Wars made much more of an impact culturally however, and it singlehandedly led to a boom in science fiction movies that lasted for decades after it came out.
There is also alot of meaning and detail packed into the way Blade Runner was shot and produced which I think rewards multiple viewings more than the original Star Wars. There's a lot of depth to Blade Runner. However, Star Wars is pure entertainment, and it totally changed the way people watched movies in the 70s and beyond (a lot of movies in the 70s were really serious and dark and realistic, but Star Wars was optimistic and joyful and imaginative) so I will always love that movie

The soundtrack album for Bladerunner includes the dialogue in many tracks. I think that's a perfect extension of what was mentioned in the video: the music is part of the world, not just on top of it, so the music doesn't stand alone, the dialogue becomes part of it in turn.

I just watched Blade Runner today! It's one of my favourite movies! I love resvisting movies and picking out things I missed the first time. This video did just that!

In addition to the part about reverb, I always liked that during the Voigt-Kampf test with Rachel, part of the later conversation about spiders is fed into the audio absolutely drenched in reverb, playing with time and adding to the unreal feel of the scene.

This reminds me so much of the Hannibal series. It is so unique in its use of sounds and they experimented with instruments that I have never heared before in my entire life. The series would not be complete without these sounds and although there is an actual soundtrack too, the sounds act on a different level of story telling.
This show might not be everybodys cup of tea, but I would love to see an analysis of it! There is so much you could talk about. From the usage of light and silence (and these mindblowing sounds!) to the way that food is portraied (... you'll know what I mean).
Coming back here I am still sad that he died last month. Definitely an icon of film music history and for me personally on of the best film music writers of all time. Blade Runner still has a quality to it I have never heared again. It really pulls you into a diferent reality.
