Embarrassing stories about the shifts and changes in my outlook and motivation on working out over the past few years...
There are so many more of these incredibly embarrassing "progress" photos and pictures I used to unashamedly use as profile pictures...and all this before Facebook, Instagram, etc were ever even a thing.
For those curious, the workout I'm doing here is something I just randomly made up:
    5 rounds
    3x 185# squat clean
    3x 15' handstand walk
20 calorie row at ~1:48/~1300cal/hr split
    10 (ugly) burpees
Hang on and don't die for time
To see the full uncut version of the workout feel free to visit my wife's channel, she posts our workouts and other stuff sometimes:

I was also a body builder trying to impress a girl in high school. She then became my girlfriend afterwards and when I asked her what she liked about me, she told me it was my humble and friendly demeanor. That I was unlike my classmates who likes to brag and show off their stuffs. Then I asked her if my physical appearance had an impact when I started working out. To my surprise, she said she liked me better when I was skinny, I became intimidating when I became buff and muscular. Sadly, she died due to a car accident. Unfortunately, I never got over my grief and afraid to have another relationship till this day. She was such a wonderful woman that her death felt like my world stopped.

This reminds me of something that I recently experienced.
My roommate's girlfriend invited him out to a lakehouse with her friends, and asked him to bring some of his friends. He invited me and my coworker. Out of the three of us, I'm the only one who consistently excercises and is somewhat strict on what I consume. I'm not huge or ripped, but I've got good abs and muscles - Imagine Tom Holland or Jaden Smith.
Long story short. The girls get us to jump into the lake from the dock. I take my shirt off and I know I look good. After we swim for a bit we go inside and from there my two friends are the only ones talking to the ladies the rest of the night.
I realized that my entire personality is simply fitness. I didn't have anything to say for the majority of topics which they discussed, such as playing instruments, languages, video games, etc.
Even before this I knew it isn't good to be a one trick pony. But this reinforced that for me. I've been working on trying different hobbies and setting goals outside of the realm of fitness.
That's all I got for now. lol.

Do not try to please everybody. Find a girl interested in fitness as you are and You will be more than happy. Always be Yourselves and follow Your passion. You do not need to be interested in everything. for example I do not watch series at all (besides Got and BB) so when someone is talking about this I am off topic and I do not regret. When someone ask me I say I do not have time for this and for me is just waste of time. You can talk about anything and if you are passion about it everybody will be impressed. Just be Yourselves and dont brag how much you can bench. Tell for example about Your meal prep girls love this. They always tell me "You are so organised" and "You are always prepared", "other guys just take a bun and sausage and ate it on a go". I do not brag about it I just tell how I live. If you try playing guitar and you fond it enjoyable OK but do not do it just for more attention and fake hobbies. And If You want to fake it find something easier cause playing instruments is difficult.

To all the skinny guys in comments... I used to be very skinny and had no confidence at all. I was doing some workouts here and there but one thing was obviously missing - diet. It is true when they say you can't overtrain a bad diet. When I finally started taking care of my diet (which I created online, from website called Dietarize) my body responded very well and I managed to put on some muscle. I started out because of the girls, but now they are the least reason I exercise. I do it to stay healthy, both physically and mentally.

I’m not Asian American (black), but I can relate a lot that you said in this video. I did 50 sit-ups everyday in 6th grade to get that DBZ body. Nobody knew, until one day in recess people were comparing belly buttons (there wasn’t a lot to do) and girls and other guys crowded around me asking how I got it, touching it, all that stuff. That attention got to my head and kinda set me on a path of almost religious exercise.
There was no break between then at 12 and now at 19 that I hadn’t worked out - like you, I was known as the “buff guy”, “the ripped guy”. It became such an invisible expectation to always have the six pack, always be able to beat people in and wrestling.
Now there’s nothing wrong a little ambition, but I had developed no personality. In one particular instance, I went to a beach with a few friends and a lot of other people I didn’t know. I made sure to go to the martial arts class right before the meeting time so my body would shine like a new car. When I got there, I didn’t even introduce myself - already expecting the comments about my lean body and my routine. Looking back at it , it was hilarious: a dude just showing up to places absolutely refusing to introduce himself to people and lifting his shirt occasionally.
I would refuse to eat anytime I went out with friends thru half of high school because I didn’t want to mess up an “visibility” of my abs or body. Vengefully, my friends would tell the servers it was my birthday and have them do the whole Applebee’s celebration. That happened at least six times.
It took time in college and quarantine for me to re-realize my original intention for working out. I want to drop the leg weights like rock lee, bench press a planet like Goku, do crazy gymnastics and parkour like in AoT. For fun.
Go skydiving, do crazy tricks on skateboards, see the world. Build my mental fortitude and agility. Read books. Learn a new language just for the heck of it. Head to a new city because it happens to be there.
Don’t worry about girls, there’s a billion of em.
Appreciate this video and message a lot - it resonated with me, and most definitely a lot more people my age during this pandemic. Grateful for the open self reflection.

Girls expectation is why men are switching over to 2D Anime girls. I may be a weeb myself and I’m into 2D girls not really anymore since I’ve found V-Tubers who some have 3D models and are voice over by real women but I’ve had 2 girls ask me to date them in Middle school. Back then I wasn’t really ready but just confused. Still single haven’t dated a girl before but if a girl were to ask me out I would probably decline depending if they are not the person I’m looking for. I recommend most people to wait for the right person if they don’t want to get there heart broken and go though multiple girls.

I like Anime too, but this isn't the mindset for you to have, this is the reason you escape and retreat to "2D Girls" ^
Also, don't wait for the right person, getting into multiple relationships is way better, because you get to practice, how many things are you already an expert at from the start? I started lifting weights in high school because I was a nerd and would always get bullied and disrespected. I wanted to build muscles like Arnold Schwarzenegger because I thought it would put an end to the bullying and disrespect. By my senior year I had put on a lot of muscle and it actually worked. But I was using my outer frame as an intimidation factor because I looked like I could knock a person out. I didn't want to hurt anyone but I was glad it got me the respect I wanted. I'm 46 now and I workout at home for general health and fitness. But the training I did in high school taught me the proper way to exercise that has lasted me all my life. That initial motivation for working out changed, but it was an important foundation that kept me in good shape my entire life. Sometimes you need that emotional leverage to light a fire under you to get started.

I agree with you 100% on this video. Here's what I think:
[1] We should BE fit rather than LOOK fit. In other words, we should use our fitness in a way to stay active and do all sorts of fun activities, because everything is temporary. Not only will we find joy in staying active it also benefits our health concerning various diseases.
[2] A strong body comes with a strong mind. A good mindset will help achieve your goals whatever it may be. Either you're skinny to the bone and wanna gain some muscle, or you're fat and wanna lose weight for health reasons. Instead of focusing on the minor things, we should pay attention more on the things that really matter.
A healthy body and mind will produce good results. To me, being fit to preach the gospel is the greatest activity you can do. In doing so, you'll live longer in this temporary life, and the eternal life that is to come.

    Hey Frank,
First of all, I can directly see that mental drive you put in perspective has directly impacted you in your ability to speak candidly and facing the parts of yourself that we all once so afraid to look at. It's really amazing to watch you progress the past decade and it served as a refrence or a mirror of sort of how I myself have progressed. Speaking for many people here, I believe a large audience here has followed you over the years and directly relate to many of the trials and tribulations that you describes on this channel.
Now to this video, what you said here directly corrolated to my finding over the last few years. Years ago you were the person that inspired me to workout and focus on fitness with your insane vertical leap, me and a friend was always on the local basketball court watching your videos commenting how insane your workouts were and attempting them ourselves, you also inspired me to get a s15 and driving playing fast and furious with my friends. But then life happens my friend got into an work accident and was crushed by 2 tonnes of glass at work, shattering half of his body - it was so bad that he is still rehabbing and operating on it today.
That was a huge wake up call for me, much like the topic of this video. I had been dragged to face the inevitabilty of the human limit and lift span and that was a slap in the face of my once superficial view on what "health" was. That I actually quit the gym, because I had realised instead of using my already strong foundation that you had inspired (in that I am lean, nowhere near as powerful as you) to go travel and enjoy youth and life while we're still here.
You see I believe we are born into this era of future and hope dependancy, in that this generation we are addicted to hope, potential and how we can "improve". But yet the reality is many of us who has stepped out of our childhood are already in the state of decline, and the inability to recognise that is a form of arrogance to defeat nature and ignorance to think we can beat it. It is extremely interesting that the moment I had broken out of that persistent persuit of more and a "better" future, that was the moment I realised all of that, the very idea of that glorified future was an abstract illusion that I had created in my head. That there ever was just thus moment, stretched toward eternity and that if all that we do is to enjoy and do out best this moment (which is the only thing that is here) the "future" that we all paradoxically fear and hope for will take care of itself, but we must accept that it is temporary and ultimately out of our control.
It is heart warming to have seen you overcome the immense challenges that came your direction. I sincerely thank you to have the courage to face your insecurities and serves as a spokesman for some of the people who's still going though this at this very moment, telling stories of your own findings and shedding light on your thoughts.
Thank you for being a genuine person,
I just hope you know how you have impacted people's lives and I want to shed some light on my findings, that "mistakes" you thought you had made were in fact not mistakes, it is because of those cringe moments that you understood and ultimately came to grips with the reality of this world. Seen the value of your words and came back to spread it to us and if we look at it in a different perspective, your "mistake" turned into lessons, and ultimately helped to impact people's lives positively.
But regardless I believe your mental strength and fortitude will comtine to assist you throughout your journey, before I go I would like to thank you once again for what you have taught and shared to us within our limited and shared time together.
    Thank you
    Appreciate it my friend! 👍

this perfectly reflects my mindset throughout highschool.
it's definitely frustrating studying/living in a predominantly white city, where my female friends always show talk about the guys they obsess over. what these guys have in common? tall, white, and low body fat %. even when they're asian, they are korean and basically anorexic because girls tend to love the vascularity.
my drive for working out has slowly shifted from "i want girls to find me attractive" to more of a "i want to find myself attractive" mindset which i almost find even worse mentally, because the standard i've set for myself is unattainable.
somewhere along the way, validation from girls lost its value and everything started being about whether or not i was happy with myself. it would get to the point where i would look in the mirror one day and decide i was fat, then lose 15 pounds over the next few months hoping to see abs.
i want to develop my mindset into a healthier one, but it definitely feels like growing up in a culture ruled by social media hinders the ability to do things for yourself, and not so others see you're doing them.

Like Samuel said the "wanting to find yourself attractive" is indeed a good mindset but like you said set achievable goals and not distorted by modern fitness influencers on steroids. Strife everyday to become a better self strife everyday to get a better workout than the last one and a better day than the last one. This doesn't mean that every day moving forward will be better no somethime's it will get worse but then you will need the mental power to push through it. I myself still have a long way to go and i have my ups and downs but together we will make it. peace

I very much agree with you and think it's both - good role models and needing time to grow up. Telling someone something vs letting someone come to their own conclusions are very different things. I think there's another thing that aligns with good role models - their peers. At a certain point, usually around middle/ high school, kids are more likely to listen to their peers than their parents or other adults that would be good role models. With social media, influencers and whoever's popular on social media are basically role models for kids, whether or not they want to be.

I'm 15, and I've been working out for a year now. I just started waking up at 4 am everyday, and stepped up my workout to be even more intense. I've gained 15 pounds, and lost all belly chest and leg fat. I also joined soccer and cross country teams to stay in shape. This video is really inspiring me to go even harder everyday. Thanks 👍

I just came back from watching your "saying goodbye" video and the losses you experienced in your family. And I just hope you dont burn yourself out from your workouts... Sometimes we need to have a greater balance with rest and exercise in order to have a fulfilled and long life.
