It bothers me that so many mock Applewhite (Do) and his work here on Earth. He worked endlessly while he was here to help people achieve the higher level above human. And I don't know why so many refused his message. Because know you see that he was correct and the world is ending and the environment is about to collapse and be recycled just ask he said. Unfortunately I was too young to hear his message at the time.

A coworker's aunt was one of the members of that cult who took their lives. It's easy to make fun of these people...that is until one of their family members can look you in the eye and you can see their grief. So awful all of this is.

      No,
Humor is mainly a sideway to ease the paint and unfairness if situations like this.
Applewhite was very articulate and smarth, I would have fallen for his teachings.
Same way that your coworker and other people did. They just wanted to find a better way.
In absence of guidance and leadership , human follows everything. No one teaches us how to be the leader of our own life.

I think people are in denial, they want to not see the scary aspects of a cult. Some people do think cults are stupid because they can’t under how almost anyone could submit to a cult but it possible it could happen to anyone. And some people just don’t care since it doesn’t affect “their lives) yes a remeber a kid said that in school when we students watched the 911 on tv. All types of people, but when it does happen and your family is affective then it’s like being in the twilight zone and can’t believe it’s happening.

@@royadartube What? You would have fallen for Applewhite's incoherent ideas? That's quite the tacit admission that you're a follower (not of Heaven's Gate, just life in general) and extremely gullible. Applewhite took advantage of desperate people looking for ANY answer, not an answer that makes any logical sense. It's really sad how easily some people are convinced of absurdities.

My husband has investigated many suicides. The phenomenon of the members acting happy or even feeling elated is a common component of the suicide decision process. Once a person breaks with reality and decides to commit suicide, they often act elated or happy. It’s the psychological equivalent of feeling relieved that they have committed to ending their suffering.
Anyone who lives with someone who is at-risk for suicide should watch for a sudden shift in personality from introverted or depressed to an unexpected happy or elated emotional state. This is a distinct warning sign that they are in need of immediate help that should never be taken lightly. Another sign is giving away possessions. (One of this cult’s members gave a necklace to a car wash attendant he befriended right before this tragedy) If an at-risk individual shows a sudden shift in personality as described or gives away possessions, they should be taken immediately for medical evaluation.
This analysis of the Heaven’s Gate event and the psychosis behind cult leaders and followers is excellent.

but this wasn't the case for Heaven's Gate members as I knew 90% or so of them very well, living with them for 19 years that I was in the group. They were happy because they knew exactly what they were doing and where their Souls would be going. Humans don't all have Souls so that's why many don't think they have souls. However anyone can get a new soul deposit if they prove to the Next Level that they want to know the truth about the reason for the existence of this planet and it's lifeforms and who created all these highly intelligent systems within systems that need to work together to have the entire system work well.
Talk about mental instability. The idea that this much high technology that this planet displays and that these bodies display could come about by random development is about as mentally unstable as can be.

I think there was a time traveler as one of "The Simpson's" writers! Perhaps living on the comet Hale-Bopp? LOL Among other bizarre numerous examples there was a 1998 episode of "The Simpsons" which shows him scribbling math equations, which - when discovered years later in 2015- proved to be scarily similar to the Higgs-Boson particle, that scientific discovery which many refer to as the “God particle,” to the irritation of physicists everywhere. Regardless of your feelings about its name, it’s pretty insane that Homer’s equation is so similar, even if this is certainly a coincidence.

I would really appreciate a video on the recovery of cult and or sect survivors. Those that left or escaped. I was in a sect for 7 years and it's been over a decade now and my brain still feels damaged. It eases over time but I still struggle to discern between their teachings and reality and I still live in fear of prophecies and still morn the loss of people I loved that shunned me because I left. That being said, although it took me 2 years to finally get the guts to leave from the time I decided to leave, leaving was the best thing I ever did for myself. I'm so thankful I got the courage to do so. Information on this topic that is easy to understand and digest for the average person is scarce though.

I can see where the Heaven's Gate Star Trek themed doctrines caught the imaginations of his followers. I remember seeing Hale-Bopp back in 1997, after the group suicide of the Heavens Gate cult members. My first impression of the cultists, upon hearing why they killed themselves, was that they were a group of self deluded individuals who bought into the beliefs of a crazy person and got what was coming to them. But, as the days passed and Hale-Bopp continued in perihelion from west to east across the night sky; I began to reassess my first impression. Instead of seeing them just as suckers, I began to see them more as seekers. Desperately unhappy people for whom life in this world had never quite worked out; people for whom all other options had been exhausted; people who were willing to take a chance, no matter how improbable, on a person whom they all believed knew more than they did, and moreover, that what he knew was both right and true and would lead them into an existence in which they would finally be 'happy'. I understood, of course, that there was no alien mother ship riding on the back of Hale-Bopp, crewed by extraterrestrials waiting to 'beam up' the cultists and that they were just dead; but for the sake of those unhappy people, I sure began to wish their had been. 🛸🛸🛸🛸🛸

In all my years of witnessing and experiencing different belief systems, this has to be the weirdest. It is amazing to see what some people will believe in when they have a charismatic leader to lead them down that wild path. If belief systems can be described as either healthy or unhealthy, then this one must be the most unhealthy ever in all kinds of ways. What make it even weirder (what could be weirder than spaceship ideas and group suicide?) is that a group of monetarily successful people would be so mentally/psychologically ILL that they would actually follow a mentally sick person even to the point of death. If they actually believed that they were "chosen," then maybe they could all be diagnosed with some grandiose narcissism as well as they wanted to be considered "special." If that group were alive today, can you just imagine the studies that could arise from sessions with the members? Thank you, Dr. Grande! EXCELLENT video, as always! @Testa Rossa I don't think that's the case with Applewhite, for the reasons Dr Grande said. Applewhite was a true believer. He wouldn't have gotten castrated and killed himself in the same fashion as the others if he wasn't- instead he would have manipulated the cult members for sex and power until there seemed an outside threat, like Jim Jones and David Koresh. Applewhite was probably able to convince others purely because of the strength and passion behind his belief. They would have been gullible and interested in aliens to begin with, then seeing someone so convinced by his own nutty ideas would have convinced them too.

Think about how much money Jim Bakker and the Holy Oil peddlers are making from the gullible. Think about Copeland and the like getting people in need to finance their private planes, mansions, cars and kingly lifestyles. Then there is Paula White and people like her who are nothing more than Christianized fortune tellers and spell casting witches.

The "Do" and "Ti" personas have always fascinated me about this cult as someone with a bachelor's in music. Do is known as the tonic of a scale and Ti is the leading tone. The tonic can also be described as the root or "homebase", which can easily show how grandiose his thinking was. Ti is a half step/minor second below Do, the smallest possible interval in Western music that sounds kinda crunchy and dissonant to a listener. Ti is the leading tone because it creates tension and this feeling of needing to "return home" and the uneasiness of being so close and needing that release badly. With Ti dying first, the music theory connection gets pretty fucked up.
His music background adds something really odd to all of this and makes me feel really uneasy.

I have another acquaintance more recently who's a great believer that ETs will save the Earth and Humanity from itself. The last time we spoke at any length, she was following a current "ET Guru" and learning how to communicate telepathically with unseen aliens. I think that the internet provides fertile ground for these types of "schools of thought," and one can easily get sucked into a group like that when they're looking for Utopia. It amazes me how many people are attracted to cults, whether the promise of going onboard a ship located at the tail of a comet or another "paradise", there must be a kind of comfort in belonging to a cult no matter how absurd - wearing the same clothing, adopting the same diet and movements there are many belief systems quite similar to this yet do not not bear the identification of being a cult.

Thanks a lot, Dr. Grande, for another marvellous episode dedicated to the analysis of one more self-mutilating and destructive cult. You know, watching this video yesterday even inspired me to learn more about Heaven's Gate. I'd heard of them before, but, after watching your video, decided to watch a few videos made by this sect, including the members' final messages, one of the ''initiating videos'' of Mr. Applewhite and that rather extensive final lecture known as ''Do's Final Exit'' which he had delivered prior to their collective suicide and which you also mentioned in your video. Well, I guess one could admit that Mr. Applewhite, being a rather educated person, also had truly great manipulative skills. His manner of speaking, the way he uses gestures, how he builds his narrative - I guess it can produce impression even on the people with the elaborated critical skills, and then we can imagine how luring that could possibly be for the people whose minds are not so refined. Of course, Mr. Applewhite is talking what seems to be complete nonsense from the point of view of a mentally sane person, but he seems to have at least some kind of logic in what he's saying... In the second part of his ''lecture'' he even seems to come to some kind of a metaphysical idea of the possible spiritual ''multiverse'' the souls ''discarnate'' from the bodies after the physical death may have. Like, if you believe in the Heaven's Gate, if you are one of the chosen, then you may have the opportunity to reach the ''Kingdom of Heaven'' in their understanding. But if you believe smth. else, then you may probably have another path in the spiritual world after your soul is separated from your body. Thus, we can logically conclude that, with such understanding, there's no need for one true religious teaching, all of them may be correct at the same time, depending on the personal beliefs of each human being. It is as if your post mortem fate is facilitated by what you believe in when you are alive. This cult is an interesting object for scientific exploration, but, of course, the horrible end of those who consented to ''leave Earth'' with Marshall Applewhite, or Do, or whatever he preferred to be called, will never be forgotten... And thanks once again for your in-depth and detailed analysis of this topic, Dr. Grande, as well as all the other themes you touch upon in your videos. Wishing you all the best!

Hey, Doc, really enjoy your vids and noticed you've stepped it up lately. Thanks for that. We all need it. I have something to say with all that's going on now. I don't need to tell you there are good, decent men and women in law enforcement and I have two in my family. I never thought I'd see the day my boys would be ashamed of what they do. One was recently hurt on the job and was told to go to the hospital to get checked out. But, he said, may I go home, first, to change out of uniform. No, go directly to the hospital. His anxiety went up, did he have the nerve to show up in uniform with the present atmosphere? Before entering the hospital, he all but stripped to his skinnies. Better that than be taunted and perhaps even attacked. As a mom, grandmother, and great grandmother, I find this sad. I never thought I'd live to see this day. And, yes, I know some cops have acted very, very badly. Let's get rid of them.

Damn, doc, you sure have done your homework, very well researched. Also your little jokes, lightening mood without being disrespectful, were great touch. But with the shared delusion- there is story about "the class" attempting their first castration DYI style, at home, with supplies stolen from veterinarian one member worked for. After operation, dude' scrotum keeps swelling like crazy, draining the liquid doesn't help and Applewhite, seeing this, says that he screwed up and wants them to take him to the police. Yet the group basically tells him to shut up, that they will deal with it. What I'm trying to say- after seeing and reading lot about Heaven's gate, it seems to me like they all together supported their delusions, with their ilnesses feeding into each other. The Two maybe started it, but in the end, I'm not sure whether Applewhite led them or they Applewhite.

I ask because I have known a few people with serious, diagnosed mental illness who also had fanatical religious views who became even more religious when they're in midst of psychotic break. Why do so many psychotic people gravitate to religion? I'm not trying to diss religion, but there seems to be a connection and I want to know if this is a personality type? Psychosis?

Religious ideation and delusional thinking are produced in the same brain areas/within the same neural projection loops. But don't ask me for the exact source of this. It must have been in one textbook about psychosis, I really don't remember where it exactly was. Maybe you can do some research on your own.

That Hale-Bopp comet was spectacular from the naked eye and was huge in the dark horizon night after night. I was mesmerized.

First time I ran across this video. It is not only very informative, it states absolute reality.
This video may help curb vulnerable people away from joining these senseless and dangerous cults. Bravo!

Thank you for examining this interesting case. One wonders how people can be caught up in cults to the point of committing suicide at the behest of the cult leader. Applewhite further developed his theology in (earthly) prison - your sarcasm about the type of prison is amusing, Dr. Grande, and I enjoy your dry wit during your analysis of cases. Could you look at the common factors in the personality types and backgrounds of those drawn to cults in the first place?

Thanks for another interesting video! Do you think you could do a video on the so-called “affluenza teen” Ethan Couch who drove drunk in 2013 and ended up killing 4 people and injuring 9 others? His family hired a lawyer and psychologist who gave him the defense that basically he was “too rich and spoiled to understand the consequences of his actions” or some such nonsense. Unbelievably that defense worked out pretty well for him. 😕 It would be interesting to see your take on the situation.

Could you do more videos on cults? I find this so interesting how they trick people to join and why someone would stay even though family and friends try to get them out. Psychology of both the cult member and the person they are trapping would be so interesting

Great video, brought up a interesting memory, a younger female acquaintance of
Mine was doing a paper for university on ufo cults and uses of Christian ideas and symbols
She wrote about heavens gate and the raelism ( a Canadian ufo sex cult) you should look at them
I asked if she chose them also because they’re controversial sexual views were polar opposites
She got very upset saying there was nothing about either group about sex or controversial, I laughed
As I had read many books and articles about both groups as I find strange ufo religions and religions
Really interesting and something they all seam share is strange views on sex such
As applewhite being castrated and convincing others to be also as sex was bad, while the raelins leader
Chose extremely attractive women to “train” to serve the gods, the group has very liberal sexual views also
It’s odd as she found this upsetting and we no longer speak, a true millennial.
I promise I didn’t press or Lear, I just thought it was strange to write about the inclusion of Christian ritual
Symbolic ideas in ufo cults and to not note that like Christianity sexuality plays a large part in the groups
    Especially the control over it.

The "Bagwon" at Antelope, Oregon pushed open sex as well, but it WAS the aftermath of the sixties, after all. All kinds of wife swapping and alternate lifestyle experiments were an obvious offshoot rolling over into the seventies. The thing that gets me is lawyers, Masters' Degreed people, and professionals with substantial assests turned all of it over to the East Indian lady assistant, who promptly moved the "kash" to Switzerland, and blew Dodge as is in that country today, with the money. She had it figured out. Iv'e seen videos of her and I'd keep my distance.
