I feel like a large part of the problem is that the novelty of having a vote has worn off, especially as it usually leaves the majority without their choice getting in

also, the fact that for all the past votes, Mojang came up with original ideas for all 3 mobs. This year, they picked 3 highly requested features/mobs and made a vote between them. The crab/extended reach, Dog armor, and penguins are things people have been asking for for years.

Even though what you’re saying makes sense logically, there is a decent chance that there are behind-the-scenes complicating factors. Last thing I’d want to do is overdemand from (which would, in turn, overwork) Mojang’s employees. We already see that happening in cinema and anime.
With that being said, I still agree the mob vote with how it’s structured is an awful idea. The majority of people nearly always lose in a three-way mob vote.

Minecraft is the highest selling game but the money is sent to mojang its mostly sent to Microsoft and why would Microsoft care much to spend a ton of money on the updates when that doesn’t give them more money the market place gives them more money so that’s what they focus on. Also Minecraft is really old and using really old code it was first designed in 2009 and the code used wasn’t very efficient being designed by an amateur developer (aka notch) they could never have believed how far Minecraft would become so they weren’t getting the best coders to make the most efficient code they made code that works and that they knew how to do and to add onto that code with all these new additions is quite hard and tedious because of how much of a mess Minecraft code is and they can’t just redo the whole thing because the community is expecting massive updates every year and the more time that passes and the more stuff that’s add the worst the mess of code becomes.

Perhaps every mob vote should be held as a two round system. If neither candidates get over 50% of the vote, the one with the least votes should be eliminated and there should be a second run-off vote held.

    • @kmb600
      @kmb600 5 місяців тому +2

Downside of that is figuring how to best communicate 2 rounds. Currently it is very simple in that you just vote once and you're done. With 2 rounds you want to avoid people voting only in the first round and not voting in the second round (like if they forgot or if they didn't know there was a second round)
Previously mob votes would work like this because the vote took place during the Minecraft Live event, which allowed Mojang to communicate there being 2 rounds, but the time available to vote in each round was very limited as a result. Now we have a 48 hour period to cast a vote prior to Minecraft Live that is very easy to vote during but how do you facilitate and communicate a second round during that?

    • @TheRenegade...
      @TheRenegade... 5 місяців тому +7

The first mob vote had three rounds. Both biome votes and the first three mob votes had two rounds. Only the last two mob votes had one round. The choice with the least votes was eliminated each round. In each of the multi-round systems the choice with the most votes in the first round eventually won, meaning it changed nothing.

Snowy biomes = white (the one we have now, basically arctic wolf)
Non-snowy taiga = dark gray (regular gray wolf)
Old growth taiga = black (or perhaps black can be an uncommon color in all biomes and through breeding)
Forest (oak) = brown (kinda like red wolves or just a... brown wolf, I guess)
We already have two variants of foxes, the red fox for regular taiga, and arctic (white) fox for snowy biomes. The first fox I saw in MC was a white arctic fox, coz I was playing in a snow biome. And it was super cute, having I think a fish in its mouth, or something.

This means all candidates probably do as well, but the decision to continue to refine and balance them into official features for updates requires higher up examinations and approvals to even see the light of day. Yeah it’s a shame that prototypes are put on the back burner or dumped, but the April Fools updates has always been full of these kind of features that never got added officially. Yes, that’s what they are, random scraps and junk just look at last year’s April fools joke. Mojang has a lot of unfinished junk in the backlogs that never see the light of day, mob vote candidates are just lucky ones that gets picked arbitrarily into a vote to decide which one is added officially.

It's that the penguin wasn't properly explained, and the armadillo & crab both had features that community have been requesting for for a quite a while. The mobs themselves are good. I'm glad the armadillo won because it means more life in the Savanna which desperately needs it and dog/wolf armor, but it came at the cost of greater reach, which sucks.

This is the problem with voting for mobs based on their hypothetical “function”. That function is totally arbitrary, it’s just one of potentially infinite possible ideas that can be figured out later, so it’s not a great basis upon which to choose mobs. In my view mobs should be chosen for the sense of character and life they add to the world, and their function can be figured out afterward. There are a million different ways to add far reach, many of which are way better than the crab, so choosing the crab based on that half baked idea doesn’t seem like such a great way to operate.

I feel like the biggest problem with the mob vote is that it goes against the idea of how the mob vote should work. They took 3 ideas that the community would absolutely love, and told us we would only get one while the rest get thrown into an ideas pile until they feel like using it. Mob votes should be for ideas that Mojang wants to add, but is unsure if we would enjoy have added to the game.

  • @Peliha

Personally, they should change the formula. Instead of voting for a mob, we should vote for its characteristics. So, we don't lose anything since the characteristics of the mob was designed by the community. This is something another studio, Big Blue Bubble, has already done, TWICE. For the armadillo, the armadillo scute is used in the real world, but instead of being used for wolf armor, they are used to make the charango, a south American string instrument. So some thoughts:
It’s okay for someone vote for a mob for superficial reasons like cuteness. Not everything has do have an endogenous value, just look at foxes. They’re practically useless, if not outright annoying, but have enough personality that people love them.
31:48 this is a great point!! Many people wanted the glow squid because of hypnotism, but it was made clear on the website that wasn’t an actual feature. To avoid this, Mojang could simply make the showcase a bit longer, but I’d prefer if they kept the showcase short and encouraged more people to go to the website. They could do this by laying out the game mechanics in a detailed way on the site and make it clear that the showcase is a simple introduction. This would also educate folks to actually do research on things they care about and not just base their opinion on who has the flashiest show.
The mob vote mobs are almost fundamentally flawed because if the devs really wanted to make the mobs work, we wouldn’t have a say in it. That’s why they’re “put into the idea library”. Since 2 of the 3 probably won’t be implemented, it incentivizes Mojang to keep them barebones ideas to not waste time. Because of this, i think players hype the vote up way too much. To be fair it’s also Mojangs fault for choosing to make the votes the flashiest way of collaborating with the community.

I would argue that the “cuteness”, or how I’d describe it, the character, of a mob is more important than its hypothetical “function” when choosing which mobs to add. Because their function is a completely arbitrary quality, and it can be later changed or revised to anything Mojang wants. What is more important is that the mobs that are being added give the world a sense of character and life and immersion. Their potential function is literally infinite, and can be figured out later.

    • @EmperorPenguin1217

@@Nephelangelo Cuteness is absolutely not important, that's the arbitrary quality and not the function. The function should be important because that actually matters in a game where gameplay is important. Literally everything by their nature gives character and life by default, that should not be the main function of something. Adding cute things for the sake of being cute is how the game got flooded with useless filler to pander to people who only care about looks because people for some reason would rather have something cute that eventually gets forgotten over something that was built to last.

They're attaching features to these mobs to justify their existence and not the other way around. Why couldn't wolf armor be made from normal materials or even or even turtle scutes? Because Mojang needed a reason for players to want to vote Armadillo not because they felt it was a good design decision. Same thing with the glow squid. They could have just let glowstone dust have the same effect as glow ink sacs, but they can't because they need to justify the Glow Squids existence and they cant remove it because it was a voted mob.

I think the primary reason the discourse shifted to the topic of the mob vote itself was because there was a lack of significant discourse had regarding the actual mobs.
People had much more interesting otherworldly things to latch onto with options like the alley, the copper golem, the rascal or moobloom. Since the mobs this year were much more mundane, people didn’t want to talk about them as much so they spent more time talking about their opinions that they’ve built up over the years like “I don’t like the mob vote”.

It's supposed to be a community interaction/complementary addition, and if you show that you enjoy a feature a lot (like the crab claw or faster boats) then they have plenty of freedom to do that in a later update somehow.

Mob votes will still probably happen in the future, despite always being such a negative time. It is free marketing for Mojang, even if someone gets their mob into the game, they aren't always happy about it either. Most who voted on phantoms regret it, seen a fair bit of people complain about the Sniffer too, but as a Sniffer voter, I really like it, despite being useless, it is impossible to make everyone happy about the mob vote.
I definetly think the explanation of what a new mob will provide is vauge, in some cases too vauge.
Last year the Sniffer won pretty easily for it had too much information, but this year we know nothing how good the wolf armor will be, will the crab reach work on mobs, can you break blocks further away too? Then you have the penguin... faster boat speed, which is pretty much just dolphin's grace, and if it was anything special, Mojang didn't make that clear at all.

What’s more important, in my view, is that these mobs are chosen for the character and life and immersion they add to the environment. Their potential function is literally infinite in possibility, and can be figured out later.

1 thing I despise of the mob vote is the fact they don't give enough information about them they give very little (which I like to call vague information) forcing the community to either assume or piece together what it actually does but sometimes the community ends up being wrong about their theories or what they think it saddens me to see the mob vote being the embodiment of everything its not supposed to be instead of bringing people together as a community it divides people from the community (sure it brings the Minecraft skins together but it doesn't bring the player themselves together) I have mentioned this in the past but
mojang and the community is an oil powered engine that runs on oil while making oil without the engine they is no more oil and the current oil is used up until nothing is left and without the oil the engine cant carry on to make oil
So to some degree without mojang we are nothing unless we find alternative solutions and without the community mojang is nothing until they find alternative solutions
(So mojang is playing on a double bladed sword and mojang has to ask themselves who has the final say? them or the community the ones who develop the features or the ones who vote for the features) so yes they do need to give more information and stop being vague about the mobs but mojang needs to do (at least i would of done) is put a pole up for the community to see which things they want to happen or return to get a general idea of what the community actually wants

Get rid of the mob vote.
You said it yourself in the video, adding all 3 would get rid of the point of the mob vote. If Mojang gets rid of the mob vote but still adds at least one more mob into the game it gets rid of the players complaint of loosing other potential mobs. Getting rid of the mob vote would also lower the fighting and war over the mob vote and lessen the hate towards Mojang, despite maybe some initial backlash.
To some other points you made in the video, mobs introduced in the mob vote aren’t liked as much because Mojang doesn’t commit to them fully. They only add what’s shown in the trailer, nothing more and sometimes they add less. They add only the surface level. The Sniffer could’ve been a promising new mob that really enhanced the archeological side of the game but instead they made it only dig up 2 plants. Neither plant has any features, crafting recipes, or are brewing ingredients despite looking very unique and one of them LITERALLY BEING CALLED THE TORCHFLOWER. They made a living, moving version of the brush but didn’t do anything with it.
I could rant for longer but my comments already long enough.

I think it's a bit funny that this is still a topic worth discussing. It's natural to feel disappointment after losing a vote, especially if all choices bring something good to the table. But there also comes a time where you have to come to terms with that loss.
I think Mojang should look into how to make the next vote less of a disappointment, probably by adding another mob vote loser into the game. The fact that it only happened once seems to be the thing that makes people so uneasy about letting go of their favorite choice this year. In that sense confirming that the copper golem and tuff golem would not come with the next update, which would be perfect for them, is Mojang sabotaging themselves severely.
But I also think the community went pretty overboard with their attempts to undermine the results of this year's vote or their campaigns to stop the votes altogether. It's pretty petty, especially since the next update seems pretty hype, whether you like the armadillo or not.

  • @laurwolfxd_3830

    1. The wolf is my favorite mob in the game
    2. Wolf armor was one of my biggest wishes since 2013
    3. The Crab and Penguin didn't seem interesting enough to me
    4. The Armadillo winning might finally get Mojang to add the Savannah update since the Armadillo lives in the Savannah and they also eat termites which Mojang wanted to add alongside Ostriches and Baobab trees.
The simple answer for why the Armadillo won is because the wolf is one of the most popular mobs in Minecraft. People just love wolves and they want them to be better protected and not die so easily.

something i think people forget about the sniffer is that during last years mob vote, it was the only one that guaranteed a new feature.
with the rascal, in the announcement it gave tiny jens and tiny agnes an enchanted pickaxe, which was clearly iron, meaning itd be useless by the time you got diamonds which does not take very long. the tuff golem was shown holding items and walking around, which while neat doesn't really add anything new.
in the sniffer reveal, it was said "maybe even get some new plants, if the community votes for the sniffer." while it wasnt said if the "new plants" would be just a decorative flower or a new crop, it was atleast guaranteed to be something new. i and i believe a lot of the community learned from the previous mob votes and only went by exclusively what was said in the reveal trailers, and not let any theorizing or expectations dictate what would be added. thats why i voted for the sniffer and why i wasnt disappointed.
i really hope mojang learns from the mob vote, especially for the sake of mobs like the tuff golem and copper golem. the tuff golem is a neat idea that id love to use, but it isnt really "useful" in the way most of the community wants. and the copper golem got an even shorter end of the stick, a mob designed exclusively for redstone users never had a chance and i think that's a massive shame.

-Is it always underground, or is it in a specific part of the underground like a specific depth, biome, or structure?
-What counts as finding him successfully, is it multiple times or just one time?
-What type of items that help you mine will he reward you, is it just any pick axe, does it include shovels, is it a specific tier, is it always enchanted or not, will it have exclusive enchantments, will it have exclusive items?

I've been saying this for a long time. Not only does it make sense lore wise because the membranes repair elytra, the End is not for the weak hearted (the early to mid game players) and it would make it not only more difficult on all levels of stage in the game and player skill, the End is the most overpowered place to get stacked with good gear very quickly. Make it hard for the late game players at the expense that it's harder for early and mid game players. Having to fight phantoms to get your elytras, shulker boxes, and diamond gear just makes sense. Sure, the shulkers themselves are difficult to fight, but nothing else is really threatening in the End once the dragon is dead, because the endermen can be so easily avoided by either not looking at them or just getting a pumpkin and using a texture pack to allow yourself to see better. Small, simple changes like this would make the game so much better, and honestly at this point we have a very limited amount of mobs that spawn in multiple dimensions and I think adding a couple more will make the game just a little bit better, and it will make the phantom a whole lot more scary and challenging but in a good way. If it turns out to be too overpowered in their current state, nerf them. We have had buffs and nerfs with hostiles before, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.

21:30 the solution is to have it NOT be a vote. Have it as an announcement for all 3 to bring hype. If you still want it to be a vote, the vote can be for which mob comes first, but the other two will come next over the course of the year. Instead of the millionth new block that doesn't change anything for survival.
The other solution to this whole problem is to add all 3 mobs, and add an option in-game to decide what mobs can or can't spawn in your world.
For example: keep the penguin, remove the Phantom from the spawn pool. Remove chickens cuz they crash the game, keep pigs. It can be a list of toggles just like "keep inventory" and keeping it always daytime.
Alright. The last thing. To do a better job at filtering out blind voting from peer pressure and stuff, your vote can require a small explanation of your reason why you want the mob. And maybe even some ideas for what the mob can do.

It's not perfect but it would probably leave more people satisfied than the current system. Also, just an opinion. I don’t think these mobs are really that bad. Just unfinished. Take for example, the sniffer. It’s a pretty cool mob. But it only finds two flowers. That’s it. If it can find ten or more. It would’ve been fine. But they don’t have the time to finish these mobs. Because unlike normal mobs. They don’t know which one they’ll be working on until it’s announced.

what i believe to be the reason for the fox and allay to be the most liked mobs from mob votes is simply because they gave us what they told us they'd do. foxes are cute little animals to populate taigas and allay can give you gifts or help you out in one way or another. meanwhile with stuff like phantoms and sniffers we get really disappointed because the way they deliver is... not good. and thus, people don't like them as much. the least they promise, the lower our expectations, the least backlash they get from mad players, that's what i got from all this.

Doesn't really help the issue that (a portion of) the community often feels disappointed with the implementation of the chosen mob, and will likely "regret" whichever wins, even though the same would happen with the others.
Also the complaint that it introduces features players could have, onlly to have to choose just 1. Good in theory (give community a say, still adding a new free feature, etc), but seems to leave a sour taste in people's mouths because they see what could be, but have to close the door on 2 of those possibilities.
Or the flip side, where there's not much enthusiasm for any of the 3 choices. Basically, there's a balancing issue where mojang can either come up with 3 really neat ideas (which will leave people upset to miss out on 2), pretty minor/uninteresting ideas (people upset because of how "unimaginative" they are, time wasted on this vs work on good updates), or there's a weird mix I guess (maybe best option overall, but makes people dislike the mob vote itself, think it's "rigged", or resent the lack of focus on their favorite thing (so if a biomes update had you favorite real world biome, but not much was out into it. Or favorite animal - see penguin fans who wished mojang either added a better feature for them or made it more clear how it'd work or be useful - this is another huge issue, the lack of clarity in the mob vote videos. They're super cool, but leave out implementation details, confusing the community.
Another issue might be tying mobs to features. A good option I'd like would be for the winning mob to be fully implemented, with its unique features and all. And then for the 2 losing mobs to be added as just basic animals, like just a model/texture that roams around in their specified biome (just drop generic "meat" item shared by all such "environment/ambient" mobs). I think this might not be a popular option though, as 1) both mojang and the community seem to dislike adding new models/blocks/etc without some new unique purpose or gameplay feature that only applies to them
and 2) might still be too much work (in mojang's eyes), as they (mojang, microsoft, and the community) might not be okay with the mobs just roaming in some basic universal way like I suggest, but would want to give them unique animations and stuff (so penguins couldn't just be easily added and made to roam around like cows or horses whatever, they'd want them to like splash around in the water and have unique sounds and animations and all that. Basically, doesn't fit the current game design to have "generic" animal mobs, but it'd be nice just for environment and for players to have irl animals they like, even if just to see them randomly walking about the biome you're exploring)

they should just actually tell us what all of the features are going to be and then try to select 3 mobs that could fit a similar theme but would offer different things. Like say they were updating the end so they did a mob vote between 3 end related mobs and they actually explained the details of how it would work and maybe some points on what it would actually bring to the game. One mob could be a cute mob for ambience, one could have a unique drop, and maybe one could be a new challenge. Because personally my least favorite mob vote was between the glow squid, moo bloom, and chillager (original name is better) and part of the reason for that was the vagueness of the features and how unrelated they all were to each other, satisfying entirely different niches for different types of players rather than narrowing the scope to a decision between what fit best in a given scenario/area of the game. I personally 100% feel like the chillager was the best choice since he seemed the most feature rich and would have fit caves and cliffs really well and you can get an idea of what he does from minecraft dungeons but the thing is we never actually saw what he or any of the other mobs would even do in game to draw a proper conclusion. During the vote they said the glow squid would give that underwater cave ambience and they sorta do that but we never knew what the drop was going to be and it ended up being something that could have easily been given to glowberries. So because people were allowed to have their own idea in their head, they associate a bias within the mob itself based on subjective factors. For some the best choice was that glow squid for underwater cave ambience, for others the moo bloom was the best because it would have updated bees, a pretty lackluster feature/update in general. For me the chillager was the best because i felt it fit the theme of the update the best, i love when they add more illagers, villagers, and related structures, and what i saw in mods afterwards confirmed what i wanted to see of him having his own log cabin structure and you could get his ice ability somehow, etc etc. The reality is that we don't even know if his ice ability would have worked the same or if it would have just been annoying to fight against in regular minecraft compared to dungeons, there is no guarantee of anything else like a structure or even fun to fight mob behavior, and while the possibility of a drop like a totem or emeralds is probable given what we know about other illagers, he could just not work how anyone expects and just end up being another nuisance like the phantom. Just explain the potential features so the people who care about what goes into the game will be more informed on the choice since we're the majority of the people voting anyway, most casual minecraft players don't even keep up with the updates and just redownload it and go "oh that's cool when did they add that".

You can't compare political systems that affect people's livelihoods with a choice of 3 gifts from a videogame developer.
The issue with choosing mobs often will come down to choice psychology where the more invested you are in a choice, the more disappointed you will be when it doesn't meet your heightened expectations, and the more you yearn for the other options. It's often better to make trivial choices faster, with less consideration, as it will lead to a more happier outcome.
“People expect to have stronger emotional reactions (including regret) to an outcome that is produced by action than to the same outcome when it is produced by inaction.” -Daniel Kahneman, Thinking Fast And Slow

Maybe it would be better, if the mobs in the vote did the same thing, but in different ways.
For example, let's say we have a vote, in which the three mobs are a food source in a biom that doesn't already have one.
So, the desert gets a good old mob that drops meat.
The Tundra gets a mob that digs out frozen berries from the snow, which negate freezing damage.
And then dark oak forests get a mob, that grows shearable food on itself.
Just some random examples. If the mobs did the same thing, but in different ways, we could focus our attention on wbere we need those the most and which look best.

Statistically when there are more than 2 choices to vote on the majority of votes will be for the loosing choices.
We see this in politics all the time. This does not mean something went wrong.
The only way to fix this kind of action is to do elimination votes. Where the lowest voted item is removed then people vote again on the new set of electors. Until there is only one or 1 elector gains more than 50% of the vote.

Outro joke was adorable and took a second to click, 9/10! Here’s an idea, start with four mobs; a face off between two second-place finishers from previous years, and another face off between two new mob ideas, followed by a grand finale between the winners of the “playoffs”. By my reckoning, there are enough runner-up mobs at this point to do this for at least three years, by which time there will be enough losers to do it again, which will produce another loser, allowing for a fifth year before it would be 100% played out. The trouble with democracy, or any government system, really, is that some people hold certain minority opinions REALLY strongly and are prepared to get violent if voting isn’t getting them what they want; this is especially the case when a majority opinion becomes a minority opinion (like racism recently in the United States), and people who used to be able to get what they wanted by voting no longer can. 😬

If anything, hasn't it sparked democracy, seeing as so many people decided to sign petitions to vote for all three? I'd say that is also a democratic action.
In any case, I believe the upset was over the lost functionality rather than the aesthetics of the mobs. I don't think people would be too upset if dolphins now affected boats as well, and we could craft an item or potion that extends our block reach without adding the crab or penguin.

Mojang needs to make the process of making a mod as simple as possible for both Bedrock and Java. Giving consumers the option to add content based on their personal likes turns the vote into a discussion that let's people rant about their regrets and pet peeves like phantoms.
Having a civil but spicy debate among the fan base is good for business imo.

The good thing about the Biome vote is that they gave relatively little mechanical information,
Instead they said things like "Snowier Snow" that indicated a vibe.
The glow squid was so disappointing because they were making the mob mysterious as a joke,
However if the pitch would've been: "we want to add a mob to the ice peaks, flower forest or dark ocean."
The choices are equal, but the stakes not high enough for people to truly get upset.

Crabs and penguins were a bit too generic in my opinion. The armadillo was the only option which fit alongside Mojang’s tradition of adding sort of peculiar animals that you wouldn’t have expected, such as the ocelot or the axolotl. Plus I strongly feel that the Mesa desperately needs some animal life, and the armadillo needs to be added to it.

Maybe if the format was different, people wouldn't get mad. Like, imagine a world where for a one day period, you could reply on a forum the name of a mob you want added (and Minecraft manually add made-up mobs or - if people can band together - create a movement behind a made-up mob that has a profile) and once the information is filtered and counted, people can suggest what it should do. It would be lenghty process, but if you have nothing to compare it to, you can't really get mad and if one of the profile-style mobs gain so much support that people do get mad, maybe it should be added.

I feel like having it where instead of voting for one mob out of three to keep, you're voting for one mob to vote out and two to keep. Even if its like they add the mobs over the span of two updates instead of one, it would be better then just tossing the two mobs that didn't get the most votes in the bin of chance and pretending like they could one day come back without emphasizing how unlikely it is.

  • @hyarin9460

I think you can still have a winning state without a more likely fail state.
What if each year they'd do a vote including the losers of last year + a new mob?
This will result in potential ideas to be stuck in fail state indefinitely, but that's very unlikely. The more likely scenario is that mobs will be added in the order that the community wants them.
