Nothing like a Scotsman leading at the trenches. I worked as a driver few years back and picked up George graham. As a Liverpool fan, I explained that night to him and he couldn't believe it lol. I asked him about smiths goal and he said it was a definite goal. I told him I was just a kid watching it on itv and after the 1st goal, there was a massive power cut in my area so I missed the ending and thought that we won it until my schoolmate called me up and told me different. I told George maybe it was a good omen having the power cut to not experience that level of heartache as a kid. He was lovely and let me have a couple of pictures with him. Never to be emulated again❤ Historically the greatest finish to any top flight league EVER. The task to achieve against one of the best sides in the world at that time on their turf is unthinkable. We did it, and it can never be eclipsed. 🙏🏽 What a story. Absolute Poetry ❤ Thank you for this documentary❤
Two proper football clubs. Two clubs of authenticity and integrity. Two clubs who understand the beauty, love and purity of football. Arsenal was destined for this title and did it in the most incredible set of circumstances. The goosebumps when you hear Thierry Henry at the end in his late piece-to-camera cameo just caps off this documentary. Would be beautifully poetic if Arsenal could do something similar against Liverpool this season. COYG ❤️
looking around at football's fall from the beautiful game, and the people's game to the game of 'who's got the most money', your words ring oh so true... well said.
I knew about this but never knew it was as dramatic and it's a beautiful football story and what makes football so good and never realised how many good players arsenal had as i was only 7! Wish football was a mixture of how it was then and how it is now, just look at the passion from the fans! Nothing like that now as the lower working class just cant afford it and we're the fans that create the environment, tourist's, novelty goers and people having a day out just don't create anything especially at the big clubs. George Graham was a brilliant manager, Tony Adams was a giant of a player, but don't know why Graham stopped managing? Brilliant film and I'm from Manchester and a United fan ✌️
The parade to the town hall that year is still to this day the best party I’ve ever been to, I’m 51. Went to most games that season. Remember getting crushed at West Ham against one of those metal barriers and my mate saving my life ~ when I saw Hillsborough it sent a shiver through me, still does. I watched the Liverpool game in a Snooker hall of all places. Get goose bumps all over my body watching that goal. Best summer of my life - Acid House parties and Arsenal winning the league. This year I’ve indoctrinated my 5 year old into being a Gooner - feels great, best club in the f******* world.
This was the year I turned a Gooner. Liverpool was the spectre looming on football, too much drama and fear after Heysel and Hillsborough and everyone wanted to knock them off their perch. This was a Liverpool side that dominated football both domestically and in world football. Arsenal winning the league that year and in 1991 was huuuuuge
I saw Lukic concede 5 for Leeds v Arsenal on 8th November 1980. It's on here if you want to check it out. Lukic made a complete mess of it for 2 of the goals. I bet if you told him he'd go on to play for Arsenal and win the league the evening of that game, he'd have thought you were taking the Mick.
Anyone not old enough to remember this or who were as yet unborn can never truly have a real sense of how absolutely impossible it was that this could happen that night...and yet happen it did!! I've watched this film so many times and it gives me the same chills every time. I still think Michael is going to get clattered at the last second before he puts that ball away...and then, to have that presence of mind and that level of coolness to execute that back pass just moments later, unbelievable!! What a moment to have witnessed!
What a great documentary especially dedicating to David Rocastle, such a class club👏 I'm arsenal through and through, I have never witnessed arsenal lift the Premier league trophy when that day reaches I will cry, too much love for this club. COYG❤
Huge Liverpool fan I was 18 at the time and don't remember much about this game I guess I must have somehow near erased it out of my memory I wonder why! Fascinating documentary tho that's helped fill in the blanks! Loved football infinitely more in this period than today.
My first Arsenal game was the home fixture against Liverpool that season, 4th Dec 88 and it finished 1-1, smudge and barnes....i'll never forget that date as i never had much interest in footy before but had a mate who's uncle had something to do with the Gunners. He convinced me to go and i think it cost me £3 to stand in the North Bank and 60p for a programme but the moment i went through them turnstiles, up the steps and gradually see the pitch over the crest at the top of the North Bank, i was hooked. What a season to become a Gooner.
a beautiful documentary . thank you for putting this together . really made us feel hillsborough . thank you all. great arsenal team .... appreciative of a great Liverpool team
I cant speak for other Arsenal fans but i have always had this profound respect for Liverpool as a Club and City i dont know where it comes from but i just do. RIP Rocky and the 97

David and Thomas in that midfield played a great role and also the striker Smith , one goal and assist, Mr. Arsenal and the goalkeeper from Croatia Luckic were amazing in that game .
I remember working in Tesco in Hendon, north London, filling shelves during the game. The store was closed as most shops in them days closed by 5.30 so we had the radio on and had it broadcasting over the tannoy. I don't even support Arsenal (Watford fan so was nice to see Pat Rice on the winning side) but even I got chills when I heard the goal go in. Left work at 10pm and the streets were rocking. It was an incredible game with an ending none of us ever thought would happen.
I was stuck offshore in the North Sea, listening to it on the radio. Unbelievable finish. Well deserved also. This is a brilliant video. Have to feel for the Scousers though. They aren't a bad bunch. Partied with them in Trafalgar Square after Arsenal done the double in 71. They took defeat well, and partied anyway, for getting to the final, and having a day out. Oh! Rocky.
Watching this makes me despise what football has become. I was 11 in '89 and a huge Arsenal fan. I remember the tragedy of Hillsborough and what I felt that day. To hear how Nigel Winterburn and other players felt really shook me watching this. There are things more important than football and rivalries. How Liverpool continued after that was an amazing feat. Proper club. And to see Wrighty crying made me cry too. What a guy! This is how football should be. Passion. Tackles flying in. Games allowed to flow. Even the short celebrations after goals, as the ref wanted to start again quickly. Now, you have coordinated celebration nonsense possibly ruined by VAR. Games at all different times to maximise profits. The football that is shown here has gone. Money has corrupted it all.
How does the best bit of this end up being Wrighty? Not yet an Arsenal legend so talking about it all as a fan,, six pack of lager and all. Breaking down while talking about Rocky becoming a champion. F***ing love that guy. Appreciated Thierry knowing his stuff at the end there too.
I remember watching the game live on tv. Everyone hated Liverpool because they were just so dominant. Every other fan except Spurs fans wanted Arsenal to do it and the way it ended was unbelievable but part of you also wanted Liverpool to do it after Hillsborough which was the saddest memory I have about football, just horrific
I remember pacing between our living room where the TV was and the parlour, coming in as Mickey Thomas burst through to score. It was a glorious night, never to be forgotten. RIP Rocky.
Wonderful documentary, goose-pimples. I must have seen the dying moments of the game and Micky Thomas's goal a hundred times through the years and I'm still worried the ref will blow up for full-time or that Micky will be caught on the ball as he shapes to make the decisive shot. Brings tears to my eyes. Legends all.
Can't believe there is a statue of Bergkamp and Henry at Emirates but from this team but only Adams and no Ian Wright!! Wright is seen as Arsenal for most people and must of gave them so many supporters
I was 9! Surrounded by London based Liverpool supporting family as a newly christened Arsenal supporter that year... This bring back such a flood of emotions!! In my opinion, still a bigger climax than the Man City winner due to the fact we played our direct title opposition.
I was at sea in the mid atlantic. No internet in those days. The radio lads got the news and passed the message to the bridge. The young arsenal fan on the bridge, told us on the main broadcast. An emotional outburst that i'll never forget. Hello chocca, hope you had a good life mate.
Horrible experience for us obviously. I remember feeling so guilty that I was so upset afterwards given what had happened at Hillsborough. I was 18 and wept like a child for about an hour. It just felt so cruel. I felt so selfish at being upset over a dumb game of football when we had lost so many people. I still feel that way now watching this, so many conflicting emotions. Football can be funny that way, being the most important of the unimportant things. Arsenal were a good side though and deserved champs.
Special game that, Graham an underrated manager, this is what knocked Liverpool "off their f**ing perch" not Fergie even though people will point to the fact that Liverpool won the league the next season. Graham done Dalglish both tactically and mind games in this game
I watched it with my grandad and as it turns out it was the last time I saw him, holds so many memories and although I support Celtic i love arsenal and used to love going to Highbury, this was absolutely brilliant, never to be done again
I watched that Liverpool-Arsenal match on the telly as a 10 year old. Unforgettable. Fair play to Arsenal, nobody but themselves game them a chance that evening at Anfield.
The greatest football story ever told which will never happen again. I remember exactly where I was that night in 89 at home with my brothers watching the game, we celebrated all night long. Who knows 2025 can come some where close to that famous night. Arsenal chasing Liverpool for this seasons league championship, who knows!

I'm sorry, man city last day drama where aguero scores last minute was very good, but this is something else. First place vs second place and with the conditions where arsenal has to win by two goals is insane.
No one likes footballers today so wouldn't really care and social media fans aren't real fans,if you don't go to at least 10 games a season your not a fan
💯
when ian wright cried it just killed me. rest in peace rocky. rest in peace to the 96. Arsenal football club. MAGIC
Lifelong diehard Utd fan here…. This was absolutely FANTASTIC 🔥 Pure goosies at the end!! 😮
👏🏻
I wish our current squad will watch this during this time and learn from the past legends' strength, determination and dedication to win. Hopefully, by the end of this season, we can overtake Liverpool and win the league again. 💪🏆
COYG ❤️
Very well said, every word!
looking around at football's fall from the beautiful game, and the people's game to the game of 'who's got the most money', your words ring oh so true... well said.
Wonderful stuff--thank you for posting it. Never forgotten, Rocky. COYG!
One of my earliest memories of watching arsenal aged 10 years old. Truly unforgettable.
Best finish to a title race by miles.
John Lukic....such an underrated goalkeeper.....after getting a league winners medal at anfield in 1989 he won another with leeds united in 1992
I saw Lukic concede 5 for Leeds v Arsenal on 8th November 1980. It's on here if you want to check it out. Lukic made a complete mess of it for 2 of the goals. I bet if you told him he'd go on to play for Arsenal and win the league the evening of that game, he'd have thought you were taking the Mick.
@grizcuz goalkeepers peak in their 30s...that's what happened to lukic
Remember standing in the North Bank singing 'Johnny, do the twist'....he never let us down.
Still brings tears to my eyes to this day ❤
Fantastic production... Thank You Universal! COYG!!
Arsenal are simply different from any other team in the world…..
It's called class. Keep it classy, try to set an example. Not easy, but win or lose, it's worth the effort.
Don't think Martin Keown got the memo.
What a great documentary especially dedicating to David Rocastle, such a class club👏 I'm arsenal through and through, I have never witnessed arsenal lift the Premier league trophy when that day reaches I will cry, too much love for this club. COYG❤
Brilliant job by the ref.
Read the temperature of the game.
Well said.
Today's ref's should watch and learn
So glad this is available here!! Saw this on Sky years ago and nearly cried. A great doc.
I was 11 years old when I started following gunners today I'm 46
About the same as me
1990-91 was my first season I really paid attention to football
If ever a match deserved a doc it was this unique epic, best day of my life only winning the CL could come close
What about winning the invincible season at white hart lane with Henry celebrating the winning goal in front of their fans?
@ Liverpool were arguably the best team in Europe, to go there and win in that fashion must be the greatest experience in Arsenal history
Huge Liverpool fan I was 18 at the time and don't remember much about this game I guess I must have somehow near erased it out of my memory I wonder why! Fascinating documentary tho that's helped fill in the blanks! Loved football infinitely more in this period than today.
This current Arsenal team needs to watch this entire documentary 3 times.
That was an absolute tactical and psychological masterclass by George Graham he somehow saw the result before it happened.
One of the greatest football documentaries ever.
All the feels🎉🙏🏽🔥
My first Arsenal game was the home fixture against Liverpool that season, 4th Dec 88 and it finished 1-1, smudge and barnes....i'll never forget that date as i never had much interest in footy before but had a mate who's uncle had something to do with the Gunners. He convinced me to go and i think it cost me £3 to stand in the North Bank and 60p for a programme but the moment i went through them turnstiles, up the steps and gradually see the pitch over the crest at the top of the North Bank, i was hooked.
What a season to become a Gooner.
❤❤❤ for David Rocastle never watched him play but I guess he was great lad.
Davies, "It was my brother's birthday. He's a Tottenham fan." Pauses, then laughs
Lovely to see everyone looking so well and a fantastic trip down memory lane
a beautiful documentary . thank you for putting this together . really made us feel hillsborough . thank you all. great arsenal team .... appreciative of a great Liverpool team
I cant speak for other Arsenal fans but i have always had this profound respect for Liverpool as a Club and City i dont know where it comes from but i just do. RIP Rocky and the 97
This is beautiful🔴⚪
No matter how many times you see this match Alan Smith gives that ball to Michael Thomas goosebumps, goosebumps goosebumps. Poetry in motion… 1:16:08 love you Wrighty… 1:16:34
I am from north London and I love Arsenal
Still the best ending to a football match/ season in history. The first time I can remember a pub showing a live football match.
It was the first time a league match had been shown live on television during the week
Nonsense.
Manchester City winning the Premier League in 2012 was the greatest ending to a season in the ENTIRE 150-year history of English football.
@@markbyzantineIncorrect.
Chelsea v Manchester City was shown live on BBC1 on a Friday night, in 1987.
As ever with Arsenal fans, they don't allow the truth to get in way of a good story!
@@andrewlangsdale7445 Nope. City were at home playing relegation candidates QPR needing only to win. It does not compare to the task that faced Arsenal that night.
@@andrewlangsdale7445if you're going to try and diss Arsenal fans at least get your facts right!!! Man United-Tottenham, December 1983 on a Friday evening, on the same day Terry Neill was sacked as Arsenal manager!!
Thank you so much!
I always had about the 89 league win at Anfield, I just watched the full documentary today. COYG ❤forever The Arsenal.
Did not think it was possible leading up to the match. Liverpool were just inevitable. When that goal went in I was in utter shock.
God, I miss the old London, the old First Division, the old ground and the old Arsenal.
I'm an Ipswich fan and I will never forget that night, I was a 17 year old loony absolutely loving the first knock off the perch
My first real memory of football...
I remember pacing between our living room where the TV was and the parlour, coming in as Mickey Thomas burst through to score. It was a glorious night, never to be forgotten. RIP Rocky.
Watched the game live on TV with my youngest son sitting on my knee, fantastic 👌
If this was a film, nobody would believe it and say it's far fetched, Best. End. To. A . Season. EVER!!
I was there. Best day of my life.
fantastic documentary and those early George Graham teams are a bit underrated. Quality plus toughness...
*We Are The Arsenal* ❤
I started following Arsenal on Wenger’s time…wow such a good documentary
I remember that night, never jumped so high in my life .
This is a great game even as Liverpool fan,end to end no quarter given brilliant 😊😊😊
