Someone posted a comment about you retiring. I actually thought "Great! Take a break! You've done more than enough for 4 years already." I checked the video and you only said 'one day, when I retire'. Talk about an overeaction. But, I wouldn't blame you for retiring after having to play a game like this. This would burn anyone out.

You've convinced me to buy this game and just leave it sitting out on our spare table for a week so as to not have to waste time with setting up/tearing down. For a game that looks so dry and not very colorful, you made it convincingly fun!

Thanks for another great run-through! I've played only once (2-era, 4-player) but absolutely loved it.
Since you mentioned the logistical/arithmetic challenges of starting in a later Era (whether from a saved game or a fresh start), I made a spreadsheet that does all the Building/Embassy/Resource calculations for each player, including number of Workers of each type needed/provided by a player's selection of Buildings.
I love your suggestion using rubber bands to "snapshot" the game and quickly restore it. As an alternative, I also made a "completely analog" save-game template for those who can't or don't wish to bag/tie up tiles (e.g., if playing multiple "campaigns" simultaneously with different player sets).
Hopefully these, or some tuck-boxes, will make "snapshotting" easier!

While this is a very long game, I'd like to assuage some worry about the length of the game. I was able to play a demo game of the first two ages in a good clip under 2 hours, and that was with four totally new players. Additionally, a four player, four age game with half new players and me having only played one partial game previously took not too much over four hours. The game will obviously take longer if you save and continue your game between each age as that adds more time to get back into the plan you were going for and wrap your head back around the current set up of the board. This game is prone to a bit of analysis paralysis, but five to seven hours for a two player game seems pretty far out from a normal play experience.
I found that using three small Plano Boxes (5 comp.) and one medium (6 comp.), then one small 5 comp. box for the tools and coin works great.
Some of the buildings limit how many a single player can build. I put each of those in to "player bags" so everything with a # X on it goes in to or out of your player bag.

Your elastic band idea is good, but you could also just use your phone to take a picture of boards and tile setup, then those components in three baggies. What do you think?
I do this with all sorts of games, and with enough baggies, it can even save your individual set-up for components/resources and the like. No idea how efficient it is, but it's definitely doable and I feel good about cracking open any game and pausing if life calls.
Also, Merkator does have super amazing tuckboxes.

Need more runthroughs with set up tips. So many games take too long to set up. Suburbia and Mad King Ludwig with expansions spring to mind. But there are many others.
Wow. Nice! Thematic game too. I definitely am intrigued by this. The downside is the length but like most empire builders I think the grandness of the game really sells. Needless to say I would be curious on your thoughts of A Feast for Odin. Might be too 'sandboxy' for you.
I love the save tips but I think we would keep table two set up with the game during the multiple day playthrough

First, I've to say I really like your reviews for the fast pace and in-depth comments on the relevant parts.... but about this game I've this concern: I just purchased it and it's arriving today, yay - but I did not see any real urgency or danger. The characters don't die and nothing pressing seems to happen. And I wonder if it works at all playing solo.
i have to admit i havent' looked at the solo rules, but often games from lookout simply have to trying to "beat your own score" in solo, which tbh i'm never really keen on. not sure if that's how it works here

That save system is interesting, but it definetely doesn't sound like a true "save" system as unless you remembered your old strategy OR recorded your previous set up it seems like you'd be reworking from scratch. It also sounds as if the center board may also have different options/combos which could change your strategy.
That being said, despite the misnomer of the name "save" I don't think I am terribly mad at the system. It seems a neat way to return to a game while still staying fresh. But yah you lose a lot to set up time for sure. It might be better for time management to just photograph and reset the table as is.
Thanks Nick! Seriously, this is one of the games out of Essen that I was most interested in despite a large lack of knowledge (Rhine River Trade and Solarius Mission also top this list... hint hint to voters!).
That said, this game looks absolutely amazing! I hope it is in stock in the states soon-ish, and that I can actually get people willing to play it with me. Out of curiosity, why is this an Ora et Labora killer? I definitely see the resemblance, but I actually thing O&L packs a more interesting production tree into a shorter game (although this has a great puzzle with the board, so I think they both should join my collection, eventually). Speaking of long play length euros, I had a chance to play 1846 earlier this month, and I have been trying to figure out if it would be something you would enjoy? (18xx, not 1846 specifically since it does not support 2 players)
Anyway, I enjoyed the rahdo reality at the end!

I see this video was from 3 yrs ago, do you still play “The Colonists” it regularly? is it a must have or is it a shelf decoration?
sadly i never really get a chance to go back and play games once i've filmed them, because i've got to move onto the next bunch of games to film. but i'd love to go back to this one if i could!
Or this is a game you could put under the top sleeve of your gaming table ;) and leave it setup for a few games
