AKG prevents age-related bone loss? (& free giveaway)

  • More good news for potential osteoporosis treatments this year. Following on from my previous video looking at how warmth-induced changes within the microbiome prevented decline in bone mass seen in osteoporosis, this new study shows how alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) may have a similar effect. The study shows in mice that AKG increases bone mass in aged mice suggesting that AKG could be used to prevent age-related bone loss.

    Hi, I’m going to use this comment to, like many others, congratulate you, for the work that you have been doing with this channel! In school/university normally there is not many courses that talk about the biology of aging and as a master’s student that wants to pursue this research field, your videos are helping and teaching me a lot.
    I wanted to also comment about alpha ketoglutarate: Ponce de Leon health has done a study that they claimed to have decreased the epigenetic age of persons in 8.5 years with alpha ketoglutarate, even though the epigenetic clock they used I don’t think that is the best, it made me think that alpha ketoglutarate probably is decreasing the epigenetic age of the cells, possible with the help of TET enzymes and so, maybe alpha ketoglutarate it’s like a natural version of (partial) epigenetic reprogramming.

    Thanks for this timely research based presentation. But am a bit confused about p53. If memory serves animals, like elephants, who have extra copies (compared to humans) of the p53 gene, have lower cancer rates as a result. And in humans exercise increases expression of p53, which I understood to be anti-cancer. But the research you presented at ~ 7 minutes indicates AKG reduced expression of p53. Is that correct, and if so, why is reduction of p53 expression desirable? Or am i confusing histone methylation status with gene expression?

    • @TheSheekeyScienceShow
      @TheSheekeyScienceShow  3 роки тому +1

      So in a general sense, p53 is activated by stress, e.g exercise but there is good and bad stress. So low expression in this case seems to suggest less dna damage (as a source of stress) which is good
