As a vocalist, I have so much freaking respect for Chappel, I can’t IMAGINE how hard it must be to get in breaths while running around in ARMOR. And then belting that “I told you so” so freaking flawlessly
@@grahamparr3933 I don’t think she is personally and here’s why. First, she took the song down an octave, which usually makes it easier to sing with less breath. Second, we can hear her taking breaths in the middle of phrases so she has enough air to continue, which isn’t the BEST breathing technique, but considering she was in armor I’ll let it slide. And yes she has backing vocals, but those are more there to add in those layers of vocals that are in the original song and to support her, if you take a look at most artists preforming live, you’ll hear some backing vocals. But hey that’s just me, maybe you noticed something I didn’t 🤷♀️
I need to preface this by stating that I am a medievalist and propmaker, just to provide context: The Chainmail and armor is custom leather work by Zana Bayne who does AMAZING custom work. So while it is stagecraft armor it is still going to take some effort, especially with that pyro in the back of the stage. It's no secret that she trains her cardio with her singing. her art pretty much demands it. While the medievalist in me is KIND of wincing, I know what HEMA gear costs, and outfitting a dance troupe with that would feed a small town with the expense; And lets be real, the cardio to dance in 14th century anglo plate would be insane. I just love the stagecraft, the aesthetic, the effort. everything. This was excellent.
she never does the same performance twice and that work ethic is absolutely INSANE ive probably seen her perform this song like 10 different times and still been in awe
Pay attention how the camera NEVER cuts to the audience or people’s reaction. Goes to show how talented and magnetic this performance is, that they don’t need to cut with filler B roll shots.
I swear this song just gets me every time. There’s just something about it that makes me feel so much joy and sadness at the same time. Something about her voice and style is just so beautiful and I enjoy it so much.
You can hear her catching her breath, but still manage to hit the high note part 😭 she is incredibly talented! Really deserving of that Best New Artist Award 💕
So many comments from you regarding Chappell. Unfortunate that your qualities are muted compared to her. Your plump body and the jagged teeth should be your highest concern. Get a grip. @@JR-lw3ms
I just want to point out that Chappell seems to have inspired the most kind, respectful fan base (as a whole). Like every comment section of hers is always so lovely and supportive, and often not only towards her. I think the general behavior of a fandom is a such a reflection of its subject so whatever she’s doing, she’s doing it right 🩷💜💙
THIS WAS A MASTERPIECE. Im so happy she is bringing camp and theatrical back into the mainstream performances because its something i haven’t seen in so long. This was totally beautiful and mesmerizing. No one’s doing it like her
@oliviabb73849 bruh your comment was so uncalled for. I love Lady Gaga too and im aware she did it first but i was talking about today’s music industry. Lady Gaga or Madonna are iconic but they are not part of today’s new generation of pop stars, it has been a while since we have seen a new pop star that does camp like Chappell
@oliviabb73849 I always love to see women pitting other women against each other. What a gals gal you are. Just so you know, there aren’t a set amount of crowns. There are plenty to go around.
@@als2480agreed but VMAs have always been production value over vocals and that’s just not her norm. I can’t believe we got such a big, lavish set piece with choreo from her (basic as it may be) and she did feel a pinch out of her element because of that. But she’s a star, and can perform rings around most any of the performers in that room last night.
That's because she blew up at a time where she was not "green" but had already been used to putting on her show. This isn't that different (higher production, but planned) just higher stakes. She's unique in that she wasn't built in a studio, but forged from performing. That's why she is so strong here.
People also seem to forget that the recorded sound mix is almost always worse than the actual live performance. The mix is set for that particular venue, and while it may sound phenomenal live, for us at home it sounds muddled and doesn’t do it justice.
@@fruitcupproductions She blew up and rose to stardom. She isn’t new to the industry but she’s new to the level of fame she has now. When did she perform at an award show? Never, so for her first time she rocked it out of the park
Nothing surprising about this. She consistently hits it out the park as a performer. But yes, your point stands. This was her first performance at an awards show.
Can we PLS appreciate the background dancers/Knights!? I was in AWE this whole performance not only bc Chappell KILLED it (of course) but the dancers?? They where amazing

@@dobly58 and who are you exactly? Chappel is such a fresh artists whos so good! Literally pretty much every song on her recent album is shockingly amazing
I appreciate that she did ONE song well. She didn’t jump through the hype parts of 3 different songs but instead put on a quality performance of one song. Captured my attention better than the other performances with mash-ups. Bringing quality back to the music industry, Mizz. Roan!
i think mash ups work for older artists who are recieving like achievement awards the same night. just because a quick reminder of why they're getting the reward is good
as an awkward teenage closeted lesbian, seeing a lesbian perform a song about lesbianism on the vmas last night made me cry so hard. basing it off of julie d’aubigny (look her up!) was the cherry on top. her speech after winning was whipped cream and sugar and all things delightful. thank you chappell roan…. edit: was informed it was more of a joan of arc inspired story like people initially said my bad chat
I think it’s a Joan of Arc allegory since it’s renaissance armor/swords and architecture, not fencing rapiers and 17/18th century opera regalia. Hence all the male soldiers and Chappell as the one woman. She has also said the costume was based on Joan of Arc. The stories and legacy mythos of Julie d'Aubigny are so worth learning about (coming from another Julie) though!! As a former awkward teenage closeted lesbian and now confidently open adult lesbian, I am so glad younger generations have Chappell as a mainstream cultural figure. It would mean the world to me then and means the world to me now. ❤
i was thinking about this and as a closeted lesbian (but not so long) im a little angry cuz i think people dont really know what this song is about and what it represents.
It was not based off of Julie, half of the things about her are untrue, (watch Kaz Rowe’s video on her), she never wore armor. I’m already kind of tired of people assuming it’s about Julie when even Chappell’s makeup artist said this was a Jeanne d’Arc inspired look.
@@cyanidecherrypie with that said, I am also desperate to see what a Julie d'Aubigny inspired Chappell performance would look like as well. A fencer, an opera singer and a famous lover of ladies all at the same time? _She'd have so much to work with._
Why Joan Of Arc? Why in armor and swords? Why fire? With what she is dealing with her sudden stardom and newfound fame and people messing with crazy toxic prosocial relationships with celebrities, she was serving a story.
“You’d have to stop the world just to stop the feeling” is one of my favorite lines in a song! I didn’t know those were the words my brain was struggling so hard to find. Thank you @ChappellRoan I needed that.
@@ChristianSormillon I’m sorry, but I don’t think I can explain it to you. I’m sure it means something different to other people than what it means to me. That’s music for you, it hits everybody different because of our unique experiences in our lives. It’s personal.
@@ChristianSormillon to me it speaks to the experience of a feeling that is too painful to express, so much so that you would rather have the world end than express it. This is the experience of many closeted people. Hence the soldiers in the background destroying each other when maybe they could have been lovers instead. That’s my take!
Every time i watch this i notice more cool details. Like at the very end the dancers who die last are crawling towards her, reaching for her, but then flop down behind the flowers.
Also she is pretty much controlling/toying with the soldiers. She waves up, they look up at one point. They sneer at her and look like they want to attack but are unable to. She sends them to the ground by twirling with a sword, pushes them away, etc.
Whoever choreographed this performance is SO GOOD, the dancers were INCREDIBLE especially w the swords!!!!!! Like what?! So so so good and chappel killed it, this theme was everything 😭😭
Is no one gotta talk about how good the choreography was?? The backup dances did so well!! The choreography was so on-point, it was full of action without it being overwhelming and messy. Props to these guys and to the choreographer!!
Idk but I'm in tears a bit cuz we all know she's worked so hard to get to this very moment and she never gave up even when others did, and seeing her literally slay this performance is nothing short of incredible. How lucky are we to witness a new pop star with immense talent. Much love and congrats, Mother
Right??? And the shot at 3:27 where the camera and the performaers get into their place perfectly and she takes a hit from the sword. None of this could work if they all didn't do their jobs perfectly.and they did it LIVE!!!
She NAILED that high note at the bridge ... im so proud of her. I love the message of this song. You'd have to stop the world ... and who can reasonably do that ... give yourself the gift of being true to how you feel. Thank you Chappell.
An iconic performance. The fact she sang it that well while being almost completely out of breath in a few spots speaks volumes to her talent. She saved it for those last two notes and absolutely killed it!
As a woman in my 40s i only recently learned about Chappell and i love her. One of the most creative and new talented artists ive seen in a really long time
My mother is approaching 60, and as of lately asks me to put on "that gay girl from Missouri" in the car lol. It's never too late to appreciate talent and good music
i'm 6 months pregnant and idk if it's my hormones or just her angelic voice but this song makes me cry every time i hear it. she's so talented and i respect her so much as an artist and as a person, it must be so much pressure to suddenly have so many eyes on you all the time and STILL protecting her boundaries strongly. she's a huge inspiration to me ❤
This is so sick. This is the kind of performance/conceptual stage production I’ve been wanting more western artists to do and I’m SO glad Chappell is bringing that energy
Let’s talk about how her story started with getting shelved by her label but she kept working cuz she knew what she is and how it’s going is she’s Belting “I TOLD YOU SO” at the vmas while WINNING BEST NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR
i can’t believe shes from a town 15 minutes away from me. seeing her blow up has made me think that YOU CAN TRULY DO ANYTHING AS LONG AS YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO IT!!!
*I love to see a performer actually giving us everything and performing their best while serving us such great vocals and visuals too! Chappell Roan is HERE TO STAY!*
My only wish list item is for her to stop using backing tracks. Clearly its to get her own voice as the backup parts... but she definitely has the connections now to get high quality backup singers.
Does it remind you of Kate Bush? When I first heard this song when I was shopping I needed to use Shazam because I was sure it was Kate. However, it is a great song and this performance was killer (I’m 47 so out of touch w pop music today)
@@drplando14 If Kate Bush and Cindi Lauper had a baby... I'm 61 and this girl is what producers hear and go "That! is what's next. Let's give her a budget. And knights."
The imagery and symbolism on stage are incredible. The song's about a queer woman who's in denial of her sexuality, and chooses to stay within the guards of conventional heteronormativity. Chappell's dressed as Joan of Arc, leading her revolutionary soldiers to fight against such conventions and burn down what we have established as the norm (represented by the castle). This is my favourite performance of anything ever.
Honestly I feel like it's more of a reference to Julie D'aubigny rather than Joan of Arc, and honestly her life is super interesting to learn about you should def look more into her.
that's a way to see it!! but i think she was actually going for Julie D'aubigny. But hey that’s just me, maybe you noticed something I didn’t 🤷♀️
shes not lip syncing but that isnt real plate armor. likely foam of some sort.
I’m sure it’s not real armor. But she is really good at actually singing and performing
I need to preface this by stating that I am a medievalist and propmaker, just to provide context:
The Chainmail and armor is custom leather work by Zana Bayne who does AMAZING custom work.
I hope she wins the Grammy award for Best New Artist.😊
she never does the same performance twice and that work ethic is absolutely INSANE ive probably seen her perform this song like 10 different times and still been in awe

What's crazy is this is a weaker performance for her. Her Coachella performance of this song?
@@als2480 Jimmy Fallon, Lollapalooza, outside lands. This was great but those are next level.
@@Highlandslowlands i feel like they had her mic too low as well. the music was louder.
For someone who blew up she honestly did better than a lot of the performance tonight. Her voice was as powerful as her presence.
That's because she blew up at a time where she was not "green" but had already been used to putting on her show. This isn't that different (higher production, but planned) just higher stakes. She's unique in that she wasn't built in a studio, but forged from performing. That's why she is so strong here.
"For someone who blew up" why do you think that is. She is a veteran
Never, so for her first time she rocked it out of the park

as an awkward teenage closeted lesbian, seeing a lesbian perform a song about lesbianism on the vmas last night made me cry so hard. basing it off of julie d’aubigny (look her up!) was the cherry on top. her speech after winning was whipped cream and sugar and all things delightful. thank you chappell roan….
edit: was informed it was more of a joan of arc inspired story like people initially said my bad chat
That’s hectic, but thanks for sharing.
i was thinking about this and as a closeted lesbian (but not so long) im a little angry cuz i think people dont really know what this song is about and what it represents.

@@ChristianSormillon to me it speaks to the experience of a feeling that is too painful to express, so much so that you would rather have the world end than express it. This is the experience of many closeted people. Hence the soldiers in the background destroying each other when maybe they could have been lovers instead. That’s my take!
The song sound 80s, the production and choreography feels 90s, she nail it 100% this is what I call entertainment
yeah 80s. i hear the proclaimers im gonna be / 500 miles in this and im not mad
First time I heard this I thought it was some lost 80s track. Or a cover of Last Christmas, until the vocals kicked in and I actually enjoyed it.
She was like, “I’m gonna slay but make it the original etymology.”
