  • Threading a Singer four thread serger / overlocker.
Covering the Singer Ultralock 14u234 and similar models.
This very high quality Singer serger / overlocker, made in Japan, is smooth, quiet and has a differential feed for stretch and gather operations.
Start by making sure the thread mast is positioned properly. Thread the upper looper, then the lower looper and then the needles.
This model can be used as either a four or three thread serger / overlocker.
To use the machine in three thread mode, just remove one needle and its thread.
Tools required - Tweezers and scissors or snips.
    Index:
    0:00 - Introduction
0:54 - Preparing and threading the thread mast
2:19 - Threading main guide bar
    3:34 - Threading tension disks
    4:53 - Colour coding
    5:40 - Upper looper threading
    9:07 - Lower looper threading
    13:13 - Needle threading
16:35 - Preparing for sewing - chaining off
    17:19 - Serging / overlocking
    17:49 - Conclusion
    Troubleshooting:
Make sure to have good needles installed. If you're unsure, replace them with brand new ones.
Check the blades are cutting well. Use several strands of thread and put them under the top blade and turn the hand wheel until the blade comes down and the threads should be cut cleanly. If not, the blades will need sharpening.
Double check the treading and check the tensions.

I bought a second hand Serger. This is the best Tutorial, I’ve come across. They way you film the video, the tips and the advice you gave, are so clear. You enabled us to clearly see each step of threading the machine. I’m not scared of my machine. I now feel more confident threading my machine. Thank you very much, it’s very much appreciated😌.

I recently bought a used Singer Ultralock 14u234 and I am very grateful this video exists. I ran into problems today & just sat & watched, paused & threaded until I had it working again. A very helpful tool, lots of details (some of which I had completely missed), great filming & tips. Ever so thankful. These sergers were very well made & should stay in use.

Built like a tank & works very well. Probably 40 years old. When I bought it for $50. Canadian I intended to learn how to use a serger then upgrade, but there is no reason to do that. It must have been well maintained by the original owner & I clean & oil after every finished garment. Without this threading video, however, I probably would have mortgaged the house & bought a self-threading new one LOL.@@matthias9379

I own the Singer Ultralock 14u34b, which is the four spool base model of this particular line, and I love how well it serges my stuff. I got very lucky buying it for $100.00 Canuck bucks in 2020 (mine is a late 80's vintage), and that thing rips through anything I put to it's feed dogs and gets it done like a champ. I had to learn to thread it because I wanted to give it a good clean and oil, and stupidly removed all the spools and threading. But, once you get the hang of it, it's not all that difficult, save for the two small dealies that go under and over while the needles stitch. Those are no joke for arthritic hands and poor eyesight.

Bought 134A version in 1993 but was so intimidated by it and the booklet supplied with it was not exciting to go through 🤣and I stopped sewing....28 years later, I pulled it out and it was seized....with some tutorials, I figured out how to open and oiled parts and rocked hand wheel knob... 2 days later, and I gave the top shaft bit holding needle bar a sharp thwack and it budged😳I had been watching this video of your over and over and your threading instructions are so clear and easy to follow!!! All your videos are!!!! So 30 years down the road and I'll finally thread and use this beauty.... thank you so much for all your videos...so valuable!!!!

Well it 0255 and I did it. I threaded my machine. The most difficult part was threading the needles. I did thread I think the lower looper? Wrong. Anyway the yellow one. So I cut the thread near the spool sorted the problem then knitted the spool bread to the one I was rethreading the yellow thread. Now I know what to do when changing thread colours lol. Thank you so much for your great video. Now all I need to do is sew with the machine and see if I need a new knife or not.

very lovely, thank you. we just got an old 14u12 and apart from being single needle all else is the same. ours doesn't cut the material well. perhaps needs a new knife? video about that? :)

From memory the lower blade can be sharpened with a standard grinding wheel. I think the top blade is tungsten carbide and can only be sharpened with a diamond impregnated grinding wheel. The blades are still available new. Maybe I'll do a video on this subject soon.

@@InStitches Hi.. thank you for that. I'll try source some and perhaps some instruction somewhere on how to replace and set or maybe it'll turn out to be so simple they're not needed. :)

@@InStitches well I've done it. unbelievably there was a replacement blade came with the machine - i found it in a little plastic bag in with needles and stuff. Too easy. Swing the top blade out of the way by pressing the end stud in and rotating it. Then slacken of the retaining screw and the old blade will just drop out. Put a new one in and snig it up a little so it holds and have it stand up above the bed. Then level it to the bed somehow - I used my screwdriver blade, lay it on the bed and across the top of the new blade. Tighten up the screw. Try it out: failure. Total failure. Go back and let down the top blade again and try again: success. Perfect job. I suddenly becomes a serger. :)

I can't find the video detailing the threading problem that is mentioned in this video. Has it been removed? I need to find it as I can not get my machine to work. I used the video a few months ago when the needles kept breaking. So frustrating as I can't remember the advice to fix the problem

Ok so me again. I’m writing from Canada. I serged something and the knife flew off but in the machine. I was able to reinstall but I’m not sure I did it right. The manuals don’t show well. Any chance of seeing a video. Now though my machine won’t see. The knife may be installed wrongly. Would that prevent the machine working right. What happens is the looper I think it’s called crosses the bottom one but gets stuck there. The motor wants to go but it’s like the brakes are on. Any help please? Thank you.

Does this machine only have the one stitch? Are there features of the newer machines I will miss if I go with this model for my first serger? Thanks!

This machine can do 3 and 4 thread overlocking (serging). I can't remember if this model has the differential feed or not but that is a handy feature.
