That was really a grand selection. Just a few weeks we were able to really enjoy several Film Noir on UA-cam from various places and years. I made a selection on UA-cam of those I had never seen. I wanted to say you made reference to some amazing films in your collection. UA-cam really has a great collection of Film Noir.
Really great video! Thanks! When I was little, my mother used to make a pot of afternoon tea and put it on a tray with some (UK) biscuits. Then we'd sit down and watch a black and white movie together. That's where my love of old movies comes from. Thanks for so many film titles to check out! I'm going to subscribe and go back through your previous videos at a later date after I've watched some of these. 👍
Thank you Jerry I added another 12 titles from the Criterion Collection in this past Barnes & Noble sale. I also resubscribed to The Criterion Channel today. I had it a few years ago when it came out but dropped it as the streaming was poor it kept rendering even though I didn't have that problem with Prime, Netflix or Hulu. Take care always sir.
Very good video and some great recommendations. I love a good film noir and I’m so happy to say I own or seen everything you mentioned, except for Thieves Highway, Deep cover and ride the pink horse. I just picked up Asphalt Jungle, excited to check that out.
Great list. Several of these films are absolute classics IMHO. For example, Ride the Pink Horse and Elevator to the Gallows (with the fantastic Miles Davis soundtrack) are great films that I would urge all to see. The Kazdoy Closet👍
Great stuff as usual Jerry! Like I said last episode, I watched Nightmare Alley recently and it might be the only noir I ever watched. I do have the newer Nightmare Alley but I haven't watched it yet and it's not Criterion. P.S. I don't know how my last comment ended up as a reply to someone else's comment, so I redid it.
Nice recommendations! Minor correction: Pickpocket is available on Blu-ray. I'll add a couple more recommendations: The Naked City (more from Jules Dassin!), Blood Simple as a key example of neo-noir, and Kurosawa's The Bad Sleep Well to get the Japanese variant on film noir (also, any of the titles in the Nikkatsu Noir box set from the Eclipse Series, which are all streaming on the Criterion Channel.)
Those are some great recommendations. I love Blood Simple and keep looking at The Naked City at B&N, thinking I should finally pick it up. Maybe this year…? Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great list. Great presentation. Thanks! From your comments on 'Thieves' Highway, you sound as if you may not be familiar with 'They Drive By Night' - 1938, with Raft, Bogart, Sheridan and Lupino. Some commentators call it a 'thriller'. I'm not sure how that term stacks up against 'noir'. IMDB does tag it as a thriller...It's readily available on DVD, even as part of a 4-disc Bogart collection. I have not seen it for years (and never on DVD), but I remember it well... perhaps because of the catchy title. Four very interesting actors, especially when one is thinking of film noir. Directed by Raoul Walsh, by the way.
Montgomery's "Lady in the Lake" didn't work...at all. Laughed all the way through it. And I adore film noir, as you do. Love all the picks here. The only one I haven't seen is "Deep Cover" which I have to see, now. Thanks.
I found Ride the Pink Horse a few months back, and thought it great. I’m amazed it’s not better known than it seems to be. Its New Mexico setting is different but works in an interesting way. I’ve seen several of the others you cover here, and they’re very good. I’m always on the lookout for Noir that I don’t know. Unlike yourself, I don’t much like heist films, but have seen several , most of which are a tad hackneyed in my opinion. I’d probably class heists as crime films rather than Noir, as such. You can’t like everything!
Good point. I do appreciate Asian noir, but the only Criterion I have in my collection is the Nikkatsu Noir Eclipse set, but haven’t watched them all yet.
Pickpocket is very questionable as a film noir but a while back Cahiers du Cinema magazine picked the best French films since WW2 and Pickpocket was voted #1. The director, Bresson, is one of a kind in his style. You either love his films or hate them. I love Pickpocket and Au Hazard Balthazar, but Welles hated his films. BTW as far as French noirs go, my favorite is Shoot the Piano Player. IMO Breathless is also a great noir as it Bob The Gambler by Melville, the father of the new wave who was making new wave films before the new wave existed.

Amazing Noir films! Very superb reviews! Thank you for sharing!
I had to own Elevator To The Gallows! Jeanne Moreau is mesmerizing!

I have both The Asphalt Jungle and The Killing! I love them both!

Thanks for this post. I had 4 but the others I am going to look for. I subscribed!
Thank you!
I just watched The Killing on Prime last week. Great movie!
Got to love noir.
Hi my name is Dino. New subscriber here. Liking the content and the approach. Well done.

Yes, sometimes there's a fine line between what are film noir and crime films. I tend to think sometimes a film can be both. Thanks for your comment!
Great selections.
Thanks for commenting AND subscribing!
As usual, great analysis Jerry. Any future or SF noir type movies out there by any chance?
Hmm I’ll have to think about that. The only two that immediately come to mind are Blade Runner and Dark City.
How about the Asian noirs by Kurosawa or Branded to Kill and Tokyo Drifter.
Good point. I do appreciate Asian noir, but the only Criterion I have in my collection is the Nikkatsu Noir Eclipse set, but haven’t watched them all yet.
Thank you for this video.
The Killing is my favorite. Quintessential noir

Shoot the Piano Player is one of those films I’ve been meaning to watch for years. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@thekazdoyclosetwithjerryka1013 It's actually one of my 13 all time favorite films.
I started watching both In a Lonely Place & Deep Cover....cringe worthy acting!!
Cringe worthy in a good way or a bad way? 🤔
