If you wanna see Maggie Cheung in something before watching The Heroic Trio, she has collaborated with Wong Kar-wai a bit. Would recommend In the Mood for Love. 😉 With the obligatory recommendation out of the way, I have to say I am also looking forward to that Heroic Trio/Executioners set! Never heard of it, but the trailers that Criterion has on their site sold me instantly!
Off topic, but congratulations to Grace on her new job!!! I was genuinely touched by how openly you'd explained that she'd lost her last one, so it's fantastic that she's gainfully employed again. And in the meantime, please keep up your wonderfully charismatic videos!
DJ I was just asking you about the Rohmer set on your last live stream! Crazy! I am obsessed with Rohmer as well! I was overjoyed when I saw this announcement! You’re going to love tale of winter ! It’s great!
Yeah man! My fellow Rohmer evangelist! So glad his films are gonna be easier for people to get. I'm really looking forward Tale of Winter. How would you rank his Four Seasons?
When I ordered the Eric Rohmer Criterion boxset it arrived as if they took it off the shelf and put a shipping label on it. No shipping box or bag. I was very surprised. It arrived in perfect condition thank goodness.
Grace, I have a standing policy. If a movie has James Cagney or Humphrey Bogart, I buy it! Why? Because it's a guaranteed great watch. I saw "The Roaring Twenties" & it's great. I plan on buying this Criterion title in 4K. It's only a few dollars more than the Blu-Ray & it will have the best picture. Your husband does a great job but you both make it even better as a team. My opinion. Keep up the great work & you both have a great weekend! --- Bill (From Mt. Holly, NJ)
The Heroic Trio and The Executioners is highly unexpected and highly welcome! Raises hopes for more female protagonist-centred wuxia/chambara/adjacent stuff.
Yeah I'm excited to be exposed to more of that style of filmmaking, because it's a big blindspot for me. Do you have any must-see suggestions in that genre?
i told you that Criterion had the rights to the Four Seasons, it was only a matter of time before they released it. They had the rights for quite a long time. I'm glad to finally get to see these films. Criterion holds a 24 hour Flash sale sometime in February, so you can purchase a few of the releases if they are available at the time of the sale. Also looking forward to ROARING TWENTIES. HEROIC TRIO looks interesting.
Yeah I knew it was coming. I'm still really happy with that set though. No regrets. Thanks for the heads up on the February sale. I'll have to pick up some of these during that. How's the November Sale hunting going?
@@FilmsByColor, Yes, I understand not regretting getting the WCL set. I would feel the same way. The Criterion hunting is going great as usual, ordered all the new releases needed since the last sale for completion: Breathless 4K; Don't Look Now 4K; Eight Mountains BR; Godland BR; Jackie Chan: Emergence of a Superstar BR; La cérémonie BR; Last Picture Show 4K; Mean Streets 4K; Nanny BR; The Others 4K & Tori and Lokita BR.
I seen McCabe and Mrs. Miller for the first time earlier this year. It's really a very unique type of Western. It's unbelievably realistic and you get sucked into the little town it's based around and get such a feel for the atmosphere of what it would have been like. I watched the HMV release of it which didn't look great, though I've read elsewhere that they intentionally created it to look very dark, a lot of the scenes are lit by natural light only which I love, so I highly recommend that release! As an Irishman, who lives amongst many, many McCabes I have to correct you as its pronounced (Mak-kabe) 😅 Though our surnames are an enigma when it comes to pronouncing vs the spelling haha
Yeah this is a great month. Been excited about The Roaring Twenties for about a year because it's been rumoured for a while that Criterion were working on it & it's right up there with all Cagney's gangster flicks, they're all consistently great & this one is a real treat for seeing Bogart in one of his rare homicidal nutter roles. He was considerably more well known for playing heroes but he didn't have play a great baddie a few times. McCabe & Mrs Miller is a masterpiece & my favourite Altman. I have the Premium Collection UK BluRay release of it so this will be a nice upgrade.
@@FilmsByColor I think it was TheDiscFather account on Twitter I first heard it. They said Criterion were working on The Roaring Twenties. It's often the best place for physical-media updates ahead of official announcements from the companies themselves. I also saw someone state it in a Reddit post.
McCabe And Mrs Miller is a classic to me. Its in my Letterboxd top 4 and I think the first sale after it comes out, I will be getting my 3rd copy (dvd,blu,4k) of the film. Have fun guys shopping!
Hi, DJ and Grace! Sorry for the late response. I'll have to purchase "The Roaring Twenties" (which I have on DVD) for the bonus features and "Nothing But a Man." Ivan Dixon, who stars in the latter film, is best known for playing Kinchlo on the '60s sitcom "Hogan's Heroes." However, Dixon then had a great career as a director from 1970 through the early '90s. Now I look forward to the video of your B&N excursion with John.
Nice video. You did it again! Is Rohmer similar to Yasujiro Ozu in terms of style and simplicity. I really like Ozu but never seen anything by Rohmer so just curious on your take? First two months of 2024 are fantastic for Criterion.

I'm surprised I've never heard of The Roaring Twenties, the premise and cast are very promising!

Thank you! She just started this week. I'm really excited for her. And thanks so much for tuning in to the livestreams. Those have been a lot of fun.

@@FilmsByColor man, that’s actually tough to do. I guess it would be:
1. Summer
2. Spring
3. Fall
4. Winter
I immediately thought of you when I saw the announcement!!
lol me too

What?! That’s crazy! How in the world did it get to you in perfect condition. That’s a miracle
Maggie Cheung is fantastic in "In the Mood For Love."
I need to finally watch that one
and drop dead gorgeous
I want The Roaring Twenties, badly.
I love old B/W movies.
Thanks for posting this video.
You got it. Thanks for watching!
McCabe and Mrs. Miller is so unbelievably good. I got the Blu-Ray in July so I'm pissed I didn't wait for the 4K. It's going to look great.
Hahaha same! I just got that in July!
Ah that sucks. I've done that so many times recently. Thankfully this is one I held off on. Glad you loved the film though. I'm looking forward to it.
The Criterion Blu-ray is still top notch.
you guys are the best
Thanks so much. Glad you’re enjoying the videos

The two I'm most interested in are McCabe & Mrs. Miller and The Roaring Twenties, but the other titles look good as well.
Yeah it's a really solid month overall. Thanks for watching! It's always good to hear from ya

I need to get tapped in to wherever you're getting your rumors from, so I stop buying blu-rays right before the 4K gets released

Hey, Kevin! I appreciate the comment as always. I hope to get the B&N haul video up tomorrow!

DJ have you seen No Way Out? It deals with racism head on, and it’s from 1950. Really ahead for its time
John Cassavetes' Shadows from 1959 as well.
I haven’t. I’ll add it to the list. Do you know if it’s available on Blu-ray?
@@FilmsByColor I think it’s only available to rent on streaming
I'm looking forward to the Roaring Twenties and Rohmer's boxset. Mccabe blu ray is enough for me.
They can never announce enough!
Agreed. They’ve been on a role lately!
I would love to get Mean Streets.
I’m considering picking that one up too. I’ve never seen it though, so I’m not sure.

Another brilliant example of 1960's African American representation is Portrait of Jason (1967)
Cool. Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll add it to the list
Rohmer 4 Ever!! 😎
I love Rohmer. My favourite is my girlfriends boyfriend. Ive got the arrow video set from the uk.
Lindo!❤
By the way, you almost pronounce everything correctly, but it’s MickCayb.”
I also want a wife who likes movies !
Is anyone here familiar with Nintendo minute
I thought of you as soon as saw it. So annoying.
Haha! It’s all good. Stings a little, but I’m glad other people will be able to get their hands on these films now.
