- When you think “Pikes Peak Special”, you’re probably thinking of Audis, Evos, Porsches, open wheel cars… all clad with giant aero and more carbon fiber than all of Nopi nationals combined. What you probably don’t think about is a diesel 70s Volkswagen Beetle. But when it’s PDK swapped, and compound turbo’d to the tune of 500 ft-lbs of torque, it all starts to make sense that a few of Europe’s celebrated rallyists thought it would be a good idea to take this thing up the world’s highest hillclimb race.

Who thinks the TDI Common Rail with PDK has the legs to be the next "it" swap like the LS and K24?
The pd 1.9 tdi's are already quite popular with many going over the 400bhp/600ft-lbs figures
It must be terrifying with that much torque on almost constant peak boost

NoctisIgnem I got darkside too go mad on my TDI VW transporter, in 5th gear I can floor it and it lights the wheels up (weighs 5000lbs) it’s got 360,000 miles on the clock and if a go steady still gets 40mpg
Pd130/pd150 are the go to Diesel engines over here in the UK, soo many people are pushing the limits with them and getting reliable figures, common rails are still up and coming, they’ve not been played with as much but they are one to watch out for!👀

Believe it or not, it's one of the cheapest and most effective ways to spray the core on the fly. Its absolutely been done before plenty of times.

the vw funcup in europe is the only championship (i know) that has passengers DURING the race, there's a class specifically for the 2 seat versions. ive done such a passenger stint and it is insanely fun. oh and they're forced to run road tyres so they slide around all the time.

I'd just wear thermals on cold days, a heater is just going to add more weight and I wanna go fast 🤙

are/do TDI’s have an ability to be built up like Cummins do? Crazy HP and of course off the cuff torque...
@@xprettylightsx with enough money any engine can be built to crazy specs. The thing about PD engines is that theyre crazy reliable (250.000 km is pretty much the break in period with just basic maintenance) and can withstand brutal ammounts of abuse. Building the internals has them retain these characteristics while also delivering tire shredding ammounts of torqe. Most people dont go for more than 450hp because at that point the tourqe just gets ridiculous and you have to upgrade your drivetrain to handle it.
Honestly I want to see them do a TDI swap in something, like shit car or the shart kart XL.
Depends on the variant, some have some defficiencies. Tho as a French I'm bias towards the XUD and 2L HDi
tinatpasselepoivre that’s true, but I think you have that in just about any engine series. But with some quality parts in the right places, along with some smart tuning, the TDI is pretty kick ass. I mean how many people can say they have a race car that can get 50 mpg?!😂

The Porsche PDK box is a modern day marvel. Recent advances in modern transmissions is advancing modern engines and performance unbelievable. Only disappointment is the weight increases for safety. Once people are able to get these new transmissions swapped into an older light chassis the drivability and performance will make huge strides forward. Imagine when the swaps for a modified LT4 from a 6th gen Camaro ZL1 with it's 10 speed auto in a 4th gen Camaro or a modified Coyote and 10 speed in a Fox body. Or a 10 speed behind something like the BBC in the Donk project or in other builds. It will advance the ability of these vehicles being able to be driven on the streets and their ability to run faster times at the track.

I love seeing different builds. This thing is great. Also, Braid wheels are the only set I’ve never had to replace from road racing use. 10 year old set, keeps on taking abuse.

We just had him compete at the "Chasing the Dragon" hillclimb in North Carolina a few weeks ago too! I was working as a corner marshall. Cool to see in person. Managed to get some video as well.

Running a GT2052 is an interesting choice for the high-pressure turbo. I won't pretend to know compound setups very well, but that's considered a reasonably "big" turbo in the 1.9TDI world. I always thought you wanted something small for the high-pressure side.
Either way, awesome build. Love how scratch-built it is, and that it managed to set a record!

At altitude. Remember the base engine already runs 45 lbs as standard. (2.0 tdi biturbo, 240hp)
Yeah and remember they aren’t very big turbos and it’s at altitude.

The Funcup cars are such a blast, this thing is on a different plane of existence. Awesome they took that shell and stuffed a monster into!! This car must take off like you stuffed a rocket up it’s ass,power to weight is what it’s about!

use a boost bleed off with a check valve to pressurise the water spray tank? constant pressure and use more capacity of the tank.
