What a beautiful tip at the end: "No matter how serious you are about your instrument, keep the fun in it, as best as you can, cause that's what people relate to when you play" thank you Larnell!
Man that hit me too when I heard that. Finding it hard to do at the moment. I love it in the practice room 😅 and experimenting / learning and things but I struggle to find people who appreciate and play similar genres. Slowly trying to see how I can weave bits of my own voice into whatever genre I play tho 👍
There *might* be other, better drummers out there, but for my money, Larnell Lewis is the best drummer on the planet. For chops, technique, musicality, style, substance -- this guy SAYS SOMETHING with his drumming. I could listen to him play with anyone, on any kind of music.
you came here probably from the Snarky Puppy live studio sessions, right? Anyway.. he's a beast and in the whole live session I actually heard only one "mistake".. he was a bit too fast on the 1.. and to put this tiny hickup in relation to the whole performance: he's a crazy bad ass! :)
This guy is such a humble soul! He did a clinic at my school UTT University of Trinidad and Tobago and he was so COOL... loves to share loves God loves drums WHAT MORE YOU NEED :D
We're blessed to be drummers. Imagine life without that talent. And we can learn and improve well into our 60s like me. I am a born-again drummer from watching UA-cam videos these past several years.
Went through a lot of videos to get to a drummer with as unique, artistic and creative an aura around their drumming as Larnell... that was a weird sentence. But he's awesome...
Now these drums are tuned, recorded, mixed, and mastered correctly. They sound rich and clear. They sound much better than the drums in the 360 Steve Gadd performance. MUCH better.
What is doing with the hi hat at the very end? Did he place the stick between the two cymbal pull away while closing the hi hats? Sounded great with the snare mimicking a delay effect... Such a tasty drummer!
He is dragging (sliding) the stick along the edge of the hi hats. Like you would bow a violin. With a little practice this can be done on other cymbals and even rims for some cool reverse reverb effects.
PenguinMcDuck I actually tried it out today while giving a lesson to a student. It turned into a lesson on why one should practice a technique before throwing it in "willy nilly" into grooves! lol
What five losers disliked this video? Any of you this comment section? If you are get the fuck out of here. That kit sounds glorious and his drumming is inspiring. The way he describes how started then to how he pushes himself to learn something to have for his style of play. This video is damn good and I wish I played like that. Time for practice boys and girls.
Fabulous sounding kit, may very well be my next kit. Can I ask what batter heads are on the toms? I suspect G2, I prefer them so much to the stock clear Emperors.
Larnell really is a class act. He might be to cool and humble to appreciate this opinion; but never the less : To me Larnell is not just GOOD... he's GOD !
What a beautiful tip at the end: "No matter how serious you are about your instrument, keep the fun in it, as best as you can, cause that's what people relate to when you play" thank you Larnell!
François Dubé that was exactly what i was thinking!! he is a master.

Favourite drummer. He is the most complete drummer to me!
venison musicic i know right one my top 5 !!!
The dynamics of this man are unreal..

+sttommore "Better" is subjective. Larnell and Sput are incredible and I love to watch them both.
Certainly a true statement.

JohnSausage and then take the fact that he learned everything on a plane ride with pretty much no rehearsal...
There MIGHT be. But probably not.
very inspiring to know this guy is one of the amazing teachers at my school everyday... Humber College in Toronto
This guy is such a humble soul! He did a clinic at my school UTT University of Trinidad and Tobago and he was so COOL... loves to share loves God loves drums WHAT MORE YOU NEED :D
3:29 that tom-sound is so smooth!
2:57 That hihat stroke just blew my mind
This man is one of my favorites so far. Just look at his face when he's jamming. You can see pure passion.
Love his melodic and musical use of the toms, and these drums really sing under his touch. Great stuff!

3:29 just opened up New Dynamics to Drum Playing for me... Luv this Dude!! :D
LL is a damn pleasure to listen to. So musical, really enjoy his drumming.
Amen, I like what Larnell said, "keep the fun in it because that's what people relate to". Great advise. He's awesome.
Smooth, Groovy & Clean!
Smh...LOVE this dude's playing
And people still saying that magic doesnt exist...my god, nothing better than this
I hear the melody from Snarky Puppy’s song “Havi”, in the beginning :)
Thank you, Larnell, for just being 🤍
Love Yamaha! I've had a set of maple custom absolutes since 97 and they sound amazing.
So much respect for this dude outstanding person!
very very very NICE!!!!!!!!!
My favorite drummer of all time!!
Best drummer in the world. In my opinion, of course.
that echo sound he made, crazy dope!!!!!!
WoW!
I love that I found this. The "breakbeat" groove starting at about 3 minutes was just so HAWT! Every fill was so sexy!
Well done!
Sotoy lu ahh
That drum tones are sweet and while Learnell playing they sound even sweeter.
Went through a lot of videos to get to a drummer with as unique, artistic and creative an aura around their drumming as Larnell... that was a weird sentence. But he's awesome...
I love your playing!
Larnell absolutely slays.
Great drummer.
Really nice fella. 🙏🏻
da até gosto! parabéns...
Fantastic Drummer
There are lots of great things to say about his playing, but the thing that knocks me out the most is the reverse sound he gets on the hi hats.
Oh my god 3:44
i was thinking exactly the same
+Kurt Stracener Right! Phenomenal Dynamics!
+Kurt Stracener My ears came... Insane
Yes!
Kurt Stracener That's my favorite part too.
Bro that open handed groove by the end is sick

"Keep the fun in it..." is like the best thing ever said, isn't it? :D
Love me some Larnell
Ya Larnell!!!
Good stuff!
I like my yahma drum set its great one of a kind I am in jazz at Rock Valley College I play tamberine sticks on percussion mvk
What is doing with the hi hat at the very end? Did he place the stick between the two cymbal pull away while closing the hi hats? Sounded great with the snare mimicking a delay effect... Such a tasty drummer!
If you're taking about 4:20, [edit] I don't know, I tried whatever I suggested previously and it didn't work. :P
He is dragging (sliding) the stick along the edge of the hi hats. Like you would bow a violin. With a little practice this can be done on other cymbals and even rims for some cool reverse reverb effects.
***** Thanks man. I too wracked my brain cells trying to figure this out.
PenguinMcDuck I actually tried it out today while giving a lesson to a student. It turned into a lesson on why one should practice a technique before throwing it in "willy nilly" into grooves! lol
Mark Duffy actually i think you can see it better in another shot.. he is pushing the top hat down in order to make it drag along the bottom hat
wow thanks
This guy is unbelievable
Maestro 🥁
That was F E D E R A L☺
Great job!
Great Skills.............need I say more.....
2:03 I wanna learn how to make that snare bend
Is he using thee heel toe technique?

Eu sou seu fã véi . Meu sonho é ver você Lernell
Super badass drummer
Yamaha need to bring the Larnell range!👑👑👑
If you want a special Jazz Rock Sound: Try it with "remo diplomat clear" on the drumhead, it's not usual, but amazing. Start tuning 10 '' Tom on D#.
2:57 Fuuuu
Fabulous sounding kit, may very well be my next kit.
Can I ask what batter heads are on the toms? I suspect G2, I prefer them so much to the stock clear Emperors.
This is 1 bad ass dude for sure
How does he do that in 2:54?!
what kind of groove is that?what kind of music? 1:03
+Kenneth Camaro I don't know what you would call the 'type of music,' but it's in 3/4 right then.
❤
Larnell really is a class act. He might be to cool and humble to appreciate this opinion; but never the less : To me Larnell is not just GOOD... he's GOD !
2:57
he sounds exactly how I imagined him to
Much better than dw!!!!
I am about to annoy everyone at work/home by tapping legs/ground lol
jouhanneau françois-gaël !
Not a great review for the snare drum... or is it? Sounds amazing either way.
keep playing like that, his going to accidentally open a "vortex" next to him.
That beat he played for the first 2 mins or so sounds very South African... I'm sure it is!
There maybe more technically capable drummers out there but I've never heard a drummer with this kind of feel. Maybe Neil Peart.
3/4 Klezma
2:50 A CHRIS DAVE RIP-OFF
Some people just have it
