Wow I thought I was the only one having situations like that I had migraines for about 11 years and when I turned 18 I decided to do my own research and figure out what was wrong with me come to find out that there was a numerous amount of foods that were causing me to have migraines almost every day after I moved into my first apartment and I started buying my own groceries and buying healthier almost from scratch Foods my migraines decreased to almost once every six months or so I feel so amazing right now

Mankind was never intended to consume certain kinds of foods. Were not grazers like sheep, goats, cows, etc. Our body also can't make use of synthetics (processed foods, glucose, etc). The liver converts fat soluble toxins (including pharmaceuticals) into water-soluble form and expelles them when it can. Toxins that aren't expelled are temporarily stored in your fat cells (example--fatty liver disease). The synthetic chemicals found in everything especially municipal water will cause a hormone imbalance, cystic growths, cancer, and micro-biome imbalance if consumed. I've got all of the above (except cancer-to my knowledge), unfortunately I'm currently unable to switch to filtered rain water.

I love your videos. You are one of the most "real" people I watch on you tube. Keep up your great work. I did many of the same things you do when my kids were young. They are adults now and they turned out awesome. We are now getting ready to have a new farm again and that is why I watch your videos. I love how you raise your kids and live your life 😀

The property taxes alone on our house is over $500 per month. Add insurance premiums for healthcare, home, and auto and that's another $900 plus, per month. Fuel, utilities, sewer, water, and internet service adds a few hundred more dollars per month, and food, clothing, maintenance, and incidentals a large sum on top of that. Hats off to you for economizing at $600 per month. Great channel.

Great video we actually live on 400 dollars a month. We do raise most of our veggies plus we sell them and can a lot.We raise our own fruit plus sell some.We raise our own meat and cure and smoke it also.We only owe a power bill and truck insurance and phone service. This keeps bills to a minimum. We dont go out to eat its mostly gmo food plus chemically processed food.Great to see like minded people are out there.Have a great new year.

You can do it! I've been trying to teach my sister about frugality and storing up for lean times, right now her husband is out of work also, and she wouldn't listen to me before, well, she finally is now! I have an extended pantry, I find something on sale for a deep discount and I can it. As much as I can afford right then. Or store it. I also can a ton of soups to stretch meat since it's so high. That works great! It's great for his lunches and for when I'm not feeling like cooking. Having canned foods that are quick and healthy but convenient on hand are lifesavers! Canned dry beans are super easy also and great to have on hand, I add chili powder, cayenne, garlic and onion powder, cumin, salt and pepper to them and sometimes a pepper if I have some fresh and they are awesome. So easy to can! Good luck and God Bless

That's impressive. I lived on 3000 dollars a year for quite a few years by myself. Mainly what helped is I cut my own wood on my place for heat and my place was paid for. When I hear people talk about animals, I kind of wonder if they are really saving any money, since a person needs very little meat in a day. I generally eat about 3 oz of meat per day during my supper meal. Beans and whole grains are not very expensive and pretty healthy. I still just eat wild greens in the summer. It's not worth the garden space. I plant foods I can store.

    • @fire7side
      @fire7side 7 років тому +5

hunter x: Yeah, it's definitely not much money, but in the country it's possible because of low property taxes and generally a lot of wood around for heat, at least where I live.

You could have titled this video "Guide To Rational Eating". Isn't it great how cooking your own gives better quality AND greater economy.
If you like eating out, you could form a 3 or 4 family dining club, with like minded families. Each family takes a turn at playing host one night a month, and you eat out 3 nights a month and play host once. Costs are about the same, but you get to socialize, enjoy the variety of someone else's cooking, kids get some variety of playmates, and maybe pick up a recipe or two. I did that years ago, with 3 other guys who got tired of restaurant price and quality. We were fair cooks to start, and all got a lot better as time went on. One guy became a real gourmet cook.

That idea is for spending money and doesn't save you money. Besides why would I pay for a family who eat more than mine. This will eventually become competitive and each time a more expensive restaurant. Not good.

Perfect timing. Yesterday I was cleaning and organizing my canning shelves. I was sending family members down to store foods and hadn't actually paid much attention. I've finally completed my pre-winter inventory and I found shortages in what I consider to be crucial areas. I've been really good about making chicken broth, but not others. I make bulk purchases but not as regularly as I should. Nice reminders to be more on top of my "store".

have you considered preserving your meat via salt because its a pre refrigerator method that can keep meat good for at least 3 months and if the power grid ever goes down for at least 3 or more days having that salt preserved meat will be really good for you in the long run for emergencies.

Even when plan for them and not deprive ourselves from those foods we love and make them at home there is just something really nice about letting someone else do my cooking and clean up for me for a meal just now and then. Hey good work. A couple additional ideas that you might enjoy:
    1. If you do canning, you actually CAN use regular jars and lids from the grocery (think spaghetti sauce, salsa etc.) a few times as canning jars (put food in less hot as to not shock the jars and crack them). I've done this and while the lids can't be re-used as many times as the "real" canning jars, I've gotten five re-uses out of some of them.
    2. This sounds gross (and occasionally it s), but grocery dumpsters can be a cornucopia of free food - especially in the winter when all of outside is like a big icebox. I started visiting the dumpster at my local organic co op for "compost" but quickly discovered an enormous volume of perfectly good produce being thrown away. I'd collect, wash, cook and can tons of it.
    3. I use glass jars (as you do) for leftovers, but for some things bags are a little better (take up less empty space etc.) Don't forget that you can easily wash and re-use ziplocks for years.
    Great work - keep sharing!

    Well-
I've watched this several times.. As always most of the videos are intresting ..
I'm having a problem with the 600$ a month, it can be possible, but our auto, home and health insurance is through the roof.. And we have minimum coverage and rarely every use any health insurance and at 46 years old -I have had no cavities or dental work-(I've been to the dentist 3 times in my whole life) .. Comparing this to what you are saying is almost like a shadow .. Question- where are you getting cheap insurance??
We have little to no debt- everything is paid for and has been for years .. And grow most of our food..( saving seed saves money)..
Our children are grown - so our home education expense is lower ( grand childrens materials are $50 a year) --
I have difficult time with 600 a month .it would be nice to see my number Shane!. We are at $1190. Just praying to reduce spending(?)..
    Never-the -less-
I'm glad you are can get by with less than $600 a month - although , I am baffled , still!

It would seem to make sense, just to offer those amounts directly to management, and leave restaurant.com out of the equation...

+Helios Higgins Great idea ! Lots of people try to bargain prices at a flea market, but in reality, almost all purchases can be negotiated if you do it right. I know that many restaurants would love to have a source of very fresh herbs and s they can barter meals for.

Is there any store in that area that would fit one of those huge Navajo/Digby trucks to fit into that has raw milk? We use to live in CDA and could get raw milk at the store. Now that we're in MT, we can't go to the store and get it. I do drive between Helena and SLC 4-6 times a week so stopping to get milk would be great.

She said they have health insurance...how could they possibly live on that small amount of money and still be able to pay health insurance. Also, she would be able to save a heck of a lot more on her food if she were to butcher her animals full grown and have a chest freezer to store the meat. It cost very little to run a chest freezer if it is full, i add two liter bottles to mine as it goes down.

    • @khm2128

Perhaps because they live on so little, they are able to afford health insurance? Most insurance, these days, is catastrophic insurance. That means it is a huge premium to have a huge deductible. Why? Because a smaller deductible means even a larger premium. This year (2016) is the worst but it has been a long time coming.
She makes it clear, perhaps not here, but in her other videos it is clear, that she doesn't usually allow all farm animals to be harvested at full age. It is more economical to harvest earlier. It makes sense.

Do you drink filtered rain water, non-filtered rain water, or municipal water? Municipal water increases your chances of having cavities and weakened bones/teeth/cartilage (1 8 oz glass of municipal water contains the recommended daily dosage of fluoride (the recommended daily dosage of water for most people is 0.5-1 gallon (that's 4-8 servings of fluoride per day))). Every claim I just made is backed by scientific studies (harvard) and the fact that it wasn't until 2 years after I moved into the city and switched to consuming municipal water instead of filtered rain water that I got my first cavity (technically 12), even though I didn't brush my teeth for the 10 years prior to switching to municipal water including when I got braces. The only change up was from filtered rain water to municipal water.

I have been watching your videos and I think you are very much like Starry Hilder. I like the both of you as you are no nonesense and definitely say it straight up. I like your ideas and I learn from watching homesteaders like you and Starry. Although I would like to have friends where I live, I am rather far from people at this farm I have. All I have is my computer to communicate with other homesteaders. Everyone who are "neighbors" don't like to socialize, or they think you have a hidden agenda.

West? No no no, I live in Kentucky. The attitudes here in this state is "unless you are friends of a family, you will never get in the door to a friendship". It is true, as I have been here for 5 years now, and NOT ONE FRIEND YET. People I have tried to get to know, like inviting them to dinner or lunch, or going out to do something or even invite them to my home, I am always rejected as "they have things to do". So I kinda quit trying to make friends here as they are NOT friendly here.

+Deborah Elliott well funny enough we used to go to big annual Bible assemblies at the Frankfurt Convention Center. When Jehovah's witnesses ever knock on your door, I probably know them or people they know. They tend to be pretty warm folks despite the region and contrary to what you may have heard, they don't want money, they're just interested in encouraging people from the Bible. It's as good a place to start a friendship as any I suppose.

I live on a very limited income. I prepared before buying my farm in getting things I needed, Like a bigger dehydrator, a canner, jars, storage containers for bulk items. I found a great source, 5 gal food grade buckets for 25 cents and 30 gal barrels with rubber seal also food grade for 3 dollars. I also purchased new pots n pans, stainless and cast because my old ones were not. Any extra money I do have I hide it lol, When I die I may be one of those crazy folks people read about. My largest expense is internet because I have to buy from satellite which is a rip off compared to other companies what they charge rural areas, I use Excede, and hate it. But as satellite goes I suppose they are reliable and the speed is tolerable, but I pay 84 dollars a month for it. No phone, cell or landline, no TV. I have a tv and an antenna but never watch it. I would be afraid of depending on You Tube its too unreliable. I do things on my channel for friends and family and do not spend time on it, it takes too much time I don't have. Its a one woman show going on my farm so my time is stretched as it is. Good luck with it, I will try to click more often. I usually play catch up on my subscriptions and may watch but do not comment every time. Perhaps I can do some sharing on my facebook to help.

+1 for cutting down on sugar!! I've cut out excess sugar from my diet, even though I'm not overweight. Fructose is just a complete bad guy for organ overload, blood (/insulin) and weight problems (all the stuff that can come from long term consumption), because it's added *on top of* sugars that are a natural part of 'just food'. Which you need to live. :)
Just read the packet under carbohydrate content (i.e. starch), the sugar part of that starch should be listed.
Candy, milk chocolate, and juice (not fruit) should have around 50% sugar, give or take 10% (we have Metric here so it'll say something like 47 grams per 100 grams which is the column I check). Honey is actually worse, it's 75-80 percent fructose! And maple syrup too, just slightly more healthy at 68%. All sugars hydrolyse into half glucose, and half fructose. Refined or not makes no difference, corn syrup is broken down the same way and just as bad.
So much for the body and health. Now teeth. Far from all sweet things are harmful to teeth. The only difference between "just sugar" and fructose is that refined sugar (only) feeds sucrose (glucose+fructose) to the bacteria in your mouth before the body has had a chance to do anything to the sweet stuff. It's not yet broken down. So even though it adds the harmful fructose (plus glucose energy to work off), sucrose alone is ideal to cause cavities!
Stevia is much less harmful, and I like that you brought it up. An even better one is Xylitol, refined (actually! :) ) from birch sap (along the lines of maple syrup, but healthy rather than harmful).
So I've cut out sugar completely, the body simply doesn't need that much sugar unless you're an athlete. So you can work it off, and you can mouthwash 7 times a day to reduce the bacteria, but it takes more than a bit of exercise to prevent the killer fructose from accumulating. I can't stress how harmful it is, this is from two doctors and I did check the doctors ;) and papers back it up.
If I do get a sweet tooth I eat fruit, where the sugar content is low compared to juice and even carrot juice, or dark chocolate (75-80% minimum).
I haven't found much on coconut oil other than it's healthier for cooking than you know margarines... haven't bought a packet of soap / margerine in a decade. Coconut butter and oil can be used to sweeten coffee and pastry, f.ex. balance cocoa, and licorice root can do exactly the same!
These are some of the things I've tested and actually work, like cumin powder, and plain greek yoghurt (not the fruit+sugar ones with sky high sugar content!). I'm actually not sure about the other things you mention that have a higher blog/forum to paper ratio in my quest so far. :)

While you are working to improve your soil you could incorporate a few Mittleider garden beds to help provide for your family's fresh vegetable needs. Any excesses the animals can convert for you to eggs, dairy and meat. My thoughts are that the more you can grow, the less your animal feed costs in the non-winter months. I am curious what percentage of that monthly budget you allot yourselves includes animal feed and veterinary expenses. By the way, very cute hat. Is that one of the styles you make for sale?

    • @dirtpatcheaven
      @dirtpatcheaven  8 років тому +1

+BonnieBlue2A I agree about mittleider...that is the method I will be trying this year. The animal feed is a VERY small part of our monthly budget. The rabbits cost $15, ducks and chickens $5, goats about $25, quail about $2. All of that for monthly feed bills. We never go to the vet (except our freak accident with Chamomile this year). Total medical for animals is probably $20 a year. The hat is made from angora on the inside and unfortunately acryllic on the outside, two hats sewed together for warmth about 8 years ago and it never dies! Yes, I do make these on my site.
