See it in context as this is a clip from the movie. The scene before this she shoots up and takes a ton of pills then delivers this song. It is an absolutely breathtaking piece of work.

I remember seeing her at the Continental Baths on NYC's Upper West Side in the early to mid 70s; she had just gotten a talented young, gay and Jewish piano player that few had heard of but who eventually rose to stardom in his own right: Barry Manilow. Years later, in 1999, to be exact, this song--and particularly this performance--became an anthem of sorts to me when my best friend died suddenly. We had watched this performance so many times on VHS that I had to buy a new copy and there is one point in this song that we both loved so much, which is when she kicks off her shoes and sings, "Stay with Me, Baby!!!" How I wish--even now, especially now--that my friend could have stayed with me! Eventually, another song--from an act that I also first saw at the Continental Baths (LaBelle as in Patti LaBelle)--and which I saw with my friend at the Hammerstein Ballroom the year before he died--eventually helped me deal with my friend's death. It is a remake of the Edith Piaf song "Hymne à l'Amour" and its lyrics spoke to me as if in my friend's voice: "If you love me, really love me, let it happen, Darling I won't care".
