    G'day Rob. You have inspired me to have a crack at building one,.Here in Oz all gas tanks get destroyed after the gas companies are finished with them, I'll just have to start from scratch! Thanks for the videos, I hope mine turn out half as good as yours.

    That is a thing of beauty...real craftsmanship. I love the metal worked feel of the edges and seams...very nice unpainted, gives it a nice industrial feeling. Id be proud if I built that.

    Rob, I love this video! I plan to retire in nine months and wanted to buy a quality offset smoker, but they’re too expensive for my blood. Seeing this video has inspired me to go out and buy a 200 pound propane tank that has been decommissioned. Since I will have plenty of time on my hands I am gathering up the tools that I need to build this smoker and learned how to use the tools, as I’ve never welded anything in my life! Your design has inspired me to do the best I can, because I recognize quality engineering having worked in the aerospace industry for 40 years. Thanks for the inspiration!

      Ron Macabeo thanks you for your kind words!! Please send pictures when your completed!!! Just a note I miss spoke in the video it’s a 200lbs tank not gallon. Good luck!!

      I would highly recommend a welding book by Ron Finch. I don’t recall the exact name but if you search by author I’m sure you can find it.

      Rob Hofstra thanks for the tip on the welding book. I will definitely check it out, thanks! Oh BTW, I knew exactly what you meant when you said 200 gallons, as I’ve been doing my research ever since I saw your video the first time. :)

    I appreciate that you didn't bore us with all the details of how you built it! I like the big wheels. Hope the owner will appreciate and enjoy your handywork!

    Hey Rob, Just wanted to let you know that I've been building custom spec competition smokers for a couple of decades. I've seen my smokers go to IBCA, Houston and Kansas City. I was I was just searching youtube for ideas for my own personal backyard reverse flow when I found this. I am very impressed buddy. Fantastic job! This is the personal smoker I'm building for me now. Great usability vs portability. Cool factor to boot! I'm starting with a 250gal propane tank with the caps cut off (about 5ft width) and will probably widen the firebox to 30in to match my smoking chamber and also accommodate 18 inch logs with a basket. I'm going to credit you with the design though! Thanks and great job!

    Pretty sweet smoker, love the wagon idea! You may want to consider bracing the front axle on future design for longevity.

  • @bobrees4363
    @bobrees4363 8 років тому

    I like the idea of making the smoker as a wagon style. One way to do it easier and cheaper would be to buy one of the garden style wagons from one of the big box stores, I saw one semi-locally advertised for $79.00 this week.

    Hey Rob. Just came across your channel and sub'd. Excellent build on the 4-wheel smoker. I had started a similar project and have been contemplating mobility since finishing up the firebox. Too small for a road trailer, too big for horsing it around. LOVE this solution! Many thanks.

    Very nice build!
    1. Did you use sleeve or ball bearings for wheel shafts?
    2. Is all the steel 11 gauge (1/8") & grating 3/16"?
    3. I thought galvanized steel was bad for cooking due to chemical off gas?

    • @robhofstra4068
      @robhofstra4068  8 років тому +1

      Thank you
      The firebox is 1/4 inch plate the rest of it ranges from 14 gage to 10 gauge
      It is not galvanized... I have my tanks chemically stripped to remove all galvanized from them
      The wheels have bronze bushings.

    Im planning to do this with a galvanized tank as well. Researching whats the best method to strip it. However, most smoker builders will tell me to just not do it. And then i find some studies (and data) on galvanized steel that say its completely safe. I'm on the fence. Any clarity on this would help. Thanks.

    I would like to build a basic charcoal grill and later possibly build a smoker.
    Do you think it would be cheaper for me to buy a good quality grill than to buy the material "metal" to build it.

    Hey Rob.. I have been doing alot of my measurements and using the BBQ calculator..If I haven't mentioned it already its a 500 gal tank..120" from bell to bell and has 37" diameters. I measured around end where I'm putting the firebox..It had a 60" measure from seam to seam..I did some tweaking with my firebox size..Came up with a 36×36×36 that gonna give me a 108.5% size differential from the recommended size..I would like to know your opinion on this.

    • @robhofstra4068
      @robhofstra4068  8 років тому

      +Jermel Lane
      Your numbers seem to be right for a reverse flow, when your building the fire box and the air intake and exhaust your better to go a little bigger than smaller. You can always build a smaller fire or throttle the air.
      Are you still thinking about putting the fire box in the center of the cooking chamber?

    • @jermellane715
      @jermellane715 8 років тому

      Not me lol..Thats the other guy

    • @robhofstra4068
      @robhofstra4068  8 років тому

      +Jermel Lol sorry about that sometimes I get confused easily.... the only thing that I would say is I would make it a little bit longer in a little bit shorter. so add maybe 4 inches to the overall width and shrink the height 4 inches I think that rectangular fire boxes look a little bit better than true squares just my opinion

    • @robhofstra4068
      @robhofstra4068  8 років тому

      +Jermel Lane making it a little more rectangular will make it easier to fit up to the cooking chamber..

    Sir i had a gentlemen build me a reverse flow smoker its hard to get up to temp i have to use a small fan to get the temp up to 200 to 225. I told him i thought the fire box was to small and the hole from the fire box to the chamber is to small and the fluk need to be bigger. If i provided pictures would that help give a ideal what needs to be redone.

    Hey Rob, I’m on Xmas break from work, and working on my 200 lb. smoker like yours, and I was wondering what the dimensions are for your fire box. I found a chart in the internet that calculates the correct size vs the size of the cook chamber, but haven’t figured it out yet.

    Hey brother! Big fan of your work, coming from a fellow welder. just curious but do you have any blueprints available for this build?
    Cheers.

      Ha Josh, thanks for the compliment! Sorry but I don't have any blueprints for any of my builds... I just start putting this together...

    Had a question about your Smoker door dimensions. Did you make your opening height from the front center-line to the top center-line so it equals a quarter of the tank circumference? Also how far off the bottom is your divider plate? Thanks.

    What purpose is the 1"x 2" (guessing on size) tubing on the interior of the firebox door? I wouldn't think it would warp from the heat from the looks of how thick it is.

    I'm thinking of building one of these put of an old hot water heater. How much plate, tube, grate, and angle do you think I'd need? Also, how good of a turn around is there with something like this? Thanks!

    That’s definitely not a 200 gallon tank. I think he meant 200 pound.

    How did you go about marking off where the fire box goes on the tank? Marking off the tank itself is what I'm asking.

    How much would you sell something like that? Kinda like the look of the handmade custom models...
