I was going to build one of these about 10 years ago. Figured up the cost of materials and many many hours it just wasn’t worth it. I bought one lightly used off Craigslist for $300 and retail was $1200 new. I’ve smoked so many briskets, pork butts, turkeys, salmon, beef jerky, chicken etc. only gripe I have is mine burns a lot of wood. I should try to insulate or use firebricks to help with heat. Nice job and I bet you’re proud of your work!
Looks really good. I built mine over 10 years ago with two 55 gallon drums. I built my fire box out of thin sheet steel in an angle iron cube. I insulated the bottom with concrete and the top with rock wool. I think you will be fine with with 3/16" but would recommend fire bricks laid vertically in the firebox. Check out how they lay fire bricks inside a wood furnace, just weld an angle iron on the wall, put the vertical fire bricks in first, then put the floor in second. Mine being over 12 years old, I'd like to build a heavier one soon.
Thank's a lot for sharing your work. I am just about to realise the same project. Everything except the firebox is ready. Unfortunately, I still have to save up for a while before I can afford the steel for that. It's remarkable how similar the individual steps are (sorry for my bad English).
The thermal mass of a smoker like this definitely takes a lot of the guesswork out of temperature control. Pair it with some nice remote thermometer system for monitoring ambient and meat temp and it practically runs itself.
I have a 60 gallon compressor tank and I have long intended to turn it into a smoker. Watching this I realized that it is a lot bigger project than I imagined. Some good ideas here. I might tackle it, after I knock out the list ahead of this.😅
Just happened onto this video and I was totally pulled in. Full on industrial light and magic goin on. Truly bad-ass. This guy must be up in Canada since he was talking about Princess Auto. Pretty cool shop sir.
I am never going to make one of those but loved watching you make it and the thought process behind each step. I find there is a lot of unconscious learning watching makers, things that I find myself doing but I don't know/remember where I picked it up, in this project I had a conscious learning as well - the trick with the paper on the pipe to get a straight cut is genius and I will use that. Thank-you.
Gonna be honest I didn’t have the patience to watch the whole video without skipping around… so I couldn’t imagine sand blasting for 5 hours haha. That’s a beast of a smoker. Hope you and your fam get to enjoy it for much longer than it took for you to make!
I understand, that’s the way I watch long videos too. I’m going to do a quick walk through video that should be more in the 5-10 minute range. Thanks! I’m smoking some wings on it right now 👍
I have been hunting tanks for a bit. I think I will use a tank for the fire box. I have the same size cook chamber as you used , I liked the video and appreciate you sharing it. Using the 3d printer to make templates was hero level bad ass!.
Sir wonderfull build thanks for sharing it. I haunt the princess auto in Sudbury Ontario. My wife makes me give up my credit cards before we go in. Boys need to be watched over. For my first build I checked my ideas with feldons bbq calculater. The folks on built not bought on face book recomended it. It saved me a lot of time. I made a reverce flow out of an old 500 pound propane tank. I ended up putting a baffel between the fire box and cook chamber. Now you need to make home brew. Youll never get rid of family then. Be well.
Mr. J. You did an amazing work on this smoker. I have own two of these smokers you will love it and yes I would put louvres down low on the door of the fire box. Thanks for sharing.
I'd probably put a lip around the top of that fire box and use it as a griddle plate. Leave a gap or notch somewhere to let grease drain. Nice build! 👍
I've built several smokers and grills. That's a very nice one sir. I'm not sure about the possibility of health hazards of that ceramic insulation. But on the paint I always used flat black header paint. That stuff is advertised for 1350F. I've never saw it burn off. One other tip for what it may be worth once ya get clean inside, and painted wipe the whole thing down with paper towels and cooking oil. No rust😃. God bless sir. Work safe. P.S. You're right, never, ever, try to fight an angle grinder. It's like playing catch with a live squirrel, don't ask how I know.😂
amazing build and great craftsmanship, a little advice from someone whos built two of these so far, grinding the paint off is a ball ache, i learnt that the first time around, stick to a chemical paint stripper, SOOO MUCH QUICKER
I seen a guy cut the top of the fire box out instead of the side to keep the heat away from the food closesed to the box, not sure if it works but it looks like a good idea
Jeremy you have that tool kit you use around the house still. If so, you should buy a Armytek Wizard C2 Pro Warm to toss in it. It is a great light to use as a work light and it is high CRI so you can also use it as a video light for your YT videos.
Awesome looking rig. I just inherited a homemade offset that's about 90% done and I just putting the finishing touches on it. Can you recommend a good brand of paint that works well on cookers/pits? Thanks!
You should build a fire grate to lift the fire off of the brick and it will be easier to clean it will burn better and put a vent close to the bottom of the door
Should've made one of the handle mounts just a thru hole and the other threaded that way you could simply stick the handle thru the open end and thread it into the other end to affix it
When I saw you go from finishing the cut to grinding with a cut off disc I was going to come down here and mention how unsafe that is. Then you learned the lesson yourself.
I would love to have the ability to weld and fab all the steel again due to sickness all of my tools sre gone and im living in a rental house now We dont know what gods plans are for us ill just put myself in his hands and see where he leads me
lol, tell me you dont know anything about metal working without saying you dont know anything about metal working. Paint makes working with metal a pain. You would have to prep all of your welds individually and make sure they dont have paint. Paint can also create toxic fumes when burned and so he might need to wear a different respirator with a fume cartridge instead of just the particulate one he has. But at the end of the day, its easier and faster to just prep it all at once then to prep each weld individually.
That's not a smoker. That's just a grill. If it were a smoker, there would be a plate separating the firebox throat from the cooking grill, closed on the box end, and only open on the opposite end. The chimney would be on the box end, and that will make the smoke and heat cover both sides of the meat.
Maybe IM reading this wrong but I think you are describing a reverse flow smoker. An offset smoker does not use this and there is always some degree of direct heat coming from the firebox
This video was amazing i flowing all the way through the beginning and the end what i liked was your video was you talked i doing att the same time it wasn't boring. I want build my own in future time from air compressor i want ask you how many hours you spent totally i really appreciate if you answered my question many thanks indeed it was a stunning video i liked. Incredible how someone with the proper tools can make something so good , I’d love to make one of these some day. Great work 👏🏼
Thank you. 👍

A plus to the horizontal surface on the firebox is the extra cooking or warming area, great for sauces, mops, etc.

Propeller wheel slot cut air intake on the door is a must 🍻
awesome video you should have added a baffle plate to your cook chamber
I am looking into that. After a bunch if cooks I think I am going to add one. Thanks for the input. Cheers👍
Enjoyed watching the build. I’m obsessed with bbq smokers. Wish I had the welding and fabrication skills. Looks great enjoy.
Great use of an old compressor tank. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum last week 😎
Awesome, thank you!
Amazing build, I was mesmerized watching you build it. I'd love to upgrade my small offset to something of this caliber.
Go for a clear coat! Love the look of the smoker, looks like Steampunk style. 😃 Great job.
Came out great! Loved your enthusiasm and joy over this project! I’m going with fluorescent green paint lol!

That is an amazing build my Brother. I am guessing the paint color will be a nice Milwaukee red, white, black combination….👍🏻
I enjoyed this build video. It was very interesting to watch.👍🏻
This was an awesome build!🔥
Thank you!
You wasted WAY too much time on the smell when you could of just "BURNED" it out LMAO
My first thought, too. Turn the camera off and let the black smoke roll. 😂
That’s the way. lol even spray some vegetable oil to season it
I think only people who actually cook know that fire is optimal when cleaning a pit
I seen a guy cut the top of the fire box out instead of the side to keep the heat away from the food closesed to the box, not sure if it works but it looks like a good idea

Thinking of doing something similar to some old propane tanks.
Where abouts in Canada are you?
Great job. Thanks for posting
You could make a coal basket that slides in and out for the firebox

Thank you! I wish I could but it can’t.
Great job..❤👍
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that 👍
question im going to build one using 1/4" pipe why the extra braces in the doors. ?? tip add ceramic tikes to the bottom and sides of the firebox
Nice build
Well.... a forklift just got added to my list... :)
What size compressor is that? I want to build a similar sized one
New to your channel that's ah awesome bar b que build
Thank you so much!
When can I come pick it up? Lmk
If the price is right it can be yours 👍
Nice smoker and ring 😉
Thank you so much! 👍
What a beauty mate
Thank you!
Where u get those magnets from with those black turning handles
So talented
Nice job brother!
You should build a fire grate to lift the fire off of the brick and it will be easier to clean it will burn better and put a vent close to the bottom of the door
bad ass video.. im building a pit now. yours turned out nise tho..
Thank you!
I was wondering how soon before you made a smoker. Lol Enjoy the good eats.
Thanks! Smoking some at this very moment👍
Should've made one of the handle mounts just a thru hole and the other threaded that way you could simply stick the handle thru the open end and thread it into the other end to affix it
Im building one now out of a 80 gallon tank.
But my work is rough and fast, dont have the patience or your fancy tools and work shop.
Love it 🤘🏼
Grandios 👍 👍 👍
Thank you!
What size tank is it
How much will you charge ge to build me one just like that
FYI- Don't weld the burner box to the smoker. They rust out much faster than the rest of it
I've never seen one that wasnt welded to the smoker except on cheap flimsy offsets.
You should have welded a lice of strapping to the inside of the tank allong the top for the lid to connect with when closed
Bon appétit !!!!
Princess Auto!? Are you a fellow Manitoban?
Fellow Canadian👍 I’m outside of Calgary.
Nicest smoker in the west. $500 in materials but I'd hate to add up the labour cost.
Thanks! Hahahaha I know right! 👍
@18:38 Is that the RV from Hell from Tango and Cash?

Looking good but u lost me at 3D printing bro really😅😅😅😅😅😅
Thanks! I was never into 3D printing either but now that I’ve learned, it’s been a huge asset to my shop and what I can make.
Couldnt you just built a big fire in the tank and got rid of the gunk smell? Maybe have saved you a few hours.
Nope.
I'm not going to lie I hate the name "Princess Auto" they could not have picked a worse branding
There is a story behind it that makes sense. 👍
Why do people remove paint just do ur build then burn it off and do less removing lol

@@MasterBigBass Yeah, that makes it a grill, not a smoker.
