Welcome back to another episode of Schofield Welding. I. This episode we are going to be talking about how to set up a suit case wire-feed machine from an engine driven machine. We are goi g to be hooking up the miller extreme 12vs wire feeder to the miller pipepro 400. Both of these machines are awesome. Do Inorder to hook the suitcase to you machine you will need a set of quick connects and a purge hose that will go to your covering gas to the back of the suitcase. Now the suitcase is ran from your electrode positive which will be your stinger side, that will be hooked into the quick connect. The ground is hooked to your work piece. Now in order to complete the circuit the suitcase has a wire sensing cable with also is what give the suitcase it’s power. That will need to be attached to the work piece as well. Now if your machine has the option for voltage you will need to reach inside the suitcase and make a switch to CV which is Constant voltage. If your machine does not it will need to be switched to CC which is constant Current. After that all you will to do is make your adjustments on voltage then wire speed and you are off to the races. I have a trail blazer 302 (Miller) &I run a 12rc wire feed . Lays it down beautifully. Structure & x-ray pipe. (PLEASE tie that 75/25 bottle to something). That’s an accident waiting to happen!!!!!’
You sir are right I am building a rack for my truck so they will be tied down all the time.
I used to work at a fab shop, and this one guy friggin REFUSED to chain his oxy and propane bottles up. They were literally sitting on a post with a chain right there. His excuse was (they were huge propane bottles, about 18" to 2" in diameter) that the propane bottle "aint goin nowhere" and he "has to change the oxy bottle so much it's not worth the hassle" ... Yeah ... OSHA guy showed up one day, and they got dinged pretty hardcore for that. Had a safety meeting, and he was told to CHAIN THEM UP or get fired. He chained them up for about 2 whole weeks. Stubborn old man...
I've done allot with the 325 trailblazer n 12vs suitcase, got mine in 05 n still works great!!

Great video, the new extreme suitcase's are are very nice, I'm trying to get our shop manager to upgrade our old miller SP-32P feeders (they are over 20 years old) to the new extreme. I'll have one for myself when I build my new rig next year maybe
I'm a Boilermaker Apprentice and along with regular stick we run the suitcase in the mills...great video as always and stay blessed.

I do structural steel up in Canada, If I were you I’d try running 27 volts, and around 515 wire speed. It’ll be spray transfer instead of short circuit mig. It burns way hotter and you’ll get better penetration and less spatter. See if that works for you guys.
You need 90/10 gas to get into a real spray transfer if you try it with c25 you end up with excessive spatter...but yes a true spray transfer would be faster smoother and offer deeper penetration...what part of Canada are you in I’m in southern Alberta...I work primarily with stainless in food plant fabrication and teach at a college but before the crash built drilling rigs and did pipe fab

I guess I forgot that spray transfer needed different gas. I work for a machine shop in south Saskatchewan. We do a lot of squirt gun but we also do a lot of site work mainly 7018 because we do structural. Anything from building erection to ag/construction repair. I’d like to get into pipe fab one day after I’m done my red seal though.

When I run my box, same setup, except I use a 8vs, 50’ of lead is all you need. If you were building skyscrapers or can’t get the truck next to the hole, then by all means have your 200’. I also run 1/0 and never busted a test or X-ray with my 50’. 50’ is a lot lighter to deal with then the 2/0 200’!
Good explanation Jacob. I have been in the industry for 30 plus years, now I am in the sales side of it. I still miss it once in a while. Yes you can still get that feeder. Stay safe!!!

I have the trailblazer 325 and have the suitcase , I run 5/64 gas less wire 3m ,211,212 by Lincoln . I love it I do a lot of moment welds and I also run a ln 25 with a 305 Lincoln
Mann, I'm with you on that 2/0. I got 250ft of 2/0 and cut it in half for 125ft each.. that stuff is heavy.

For even better results I recommend uncoiling your leads off the truck.
That coil is no different than windings in an electric motor. It creates a magnetic field.
If you would like to test this theory
Throw that coil of leads on the floor where you have metal shavings and weld a few beads, you should notice the metal shaving near that coil will be in the shape of the coil.

I have the same 12vs and have ran pallets upon pallets of dual shield through it
was going to say the same... I've even had the leads move when you start welding at higher amps/volts... also the coiled leads reeked havoc on my high frequency box (HF 251) couldn't produce over 125 amps AC until I figured that. problem out. some say the direction you coil your leads can make a difference but just drag them out in a straight line or weaving "S"

@@JacobSchofield I coil up a few wraps in my hand and then throw them off the truck, no way I put 200' over my shoulders and walk it out... like I say... there aint no girls around watching... so I aint carrying this like a macho man!!

Wanna buy a welder can u run this with a SA 200 I do general contracting and repairs but wanna start more welding sense went to school for it but not sure if I can make it on pipeline rt now
I run the polarity opposite of that on the ln 25. I put a small quick connect lead wired into the carry handle, splice the ground from the suitcase in to the quick connect and then bolt the end of the added lead to a piece of rebar and the. Tack that to whatever your welding on
Then your ground just drags around with you and the suitcase
I could send you pics of the set up, I’m an iron worker and weld off a big blue 400 and an LN 25 ALL day.

Ran the suitcase back in 2013 welding on railcars for Navajo mine. Great work!
Man sounds like it for sure.
The sputter that you talk about it magnet current. When your leads are rolled or wrapped a magnetic current will be formed. Lay all the leads out on the ground uncoiled. I use the exact set up as you have in the video. Hope this helps
When I was an ironworker that's all we ran but we ran the innershield and it was awesome

That’s wat I run and you can’t stray too far off from recommended setting on the self shielding they are pretty specific but I weld underground and gotta carry it all over catwalks and down in chutes and can’t carry a gas bottle and hose in these areas and it’s a time saver forsure
I love running wire I have the older one to that one you have and a Activate 8 made by linking
Informative video as always! Definitely more of a wire hand myself, cool to see this set up. Working in a vehicle fab shop so I don't see this often or exactly need a suitcase, but definitely will look into it when I get my 'schtuff' up and running.
I run more wire than anything,dualshield and push-pull aluminum for my 9-5.I have a LN25 for a feeder off a Miller Bobcat250 engine drive for my side-gig and I LOVE it!

Sergio these things have been awesome!! we have been welding this whole bed together with one.
I would HIGHLY recommend a tweco flex knucklehead conductor tube, their absolutely wikid for fab work and tight spots like pipe supports and last for a really long time as long as u don’t over bend them. For .035 hard wire try 25-26V and 475 Inches per min, good setting for anything 1/4-3/8” thick and above.

24 v and 325 is a good setting for that stuff , also push the gun since you are using gas and hard wire .

What you were experiencing was arc blow from your grounds. Happens a lot running the suitcases with insufficient grounds on a small test plate like you were using. When we take out aws and abs test at the shipyard we hook up extra grounds at the top and bottom of our test coupon on the runoff tabs to prevent arc blow on vertical uphill running 1/16 dual shield flux core

Most the guys out here do. I dont know exactly why but thats what they use.
Jacob Schofield you get more precision and consistency from a flow meter but they are easier to break out in the field that may be why
roostin built an armored box that covers mine for that reason

Spuddering can be caused by a bad liner inside your whip, kinking your lead, or the wrong sized white. Also keep in mind to tighten your slack in the spool as your wire runs down! Fluxcore is fun and satisfying just takes a few days to get the hang of it:)

Hump around .045 wire in that thing. The Suitcase is ASS KICKING if your doing lot of mig get the nozel dip really keeps it clean.
I prefer Lincoln’s LN25. Use that all day out in the field. I run a lot of dual shield. 0.45, and 1/16th. Runs like a dream

If you get really interested you can change out the gas to 90/10 and run some spray arc. Keep the videos coming.

To run a suitcase off of the SA200 you need the LN25 with the CC/CV switch.
045 axil spray mode 28.5 to 32 with 315 to 335 and 90/10 gas all the way
I run my LN25 off my SA200 no issues.

@@JacobSchofield Nope. Just flick the switch on the inside and set to CC. Hook the leads up like regular. Play with it to get the settings as you want. I usually use mine for sheet metal with .035 self shield flux core so I'm usually keeping my heat in first gear around 40-70. Got some heavier duty wire and drive rolls on order though.

Always ground out to the work piece..... voltage sensing separate from your main ground too do not clip em together at least I do with my LN25 ..... sometimes that spit and sputter change out the contact tip too
Have your leads out straight helps less voltage drop...there coiled up it it turns in to an induction coil...simple magnetic 🧲...I do welding n on cell tower’s same 12vs w a miller 301 no issues w leads straight out..in the box well she’s ugly...cheers

I run flux core off a sa200 dcen set on cc mode runs just fine wont be welding anything thin with it tho
I've been running .035 self shield on sheet metal no problem. First gear turned as low as 40. Down to 18 gauge and exhaust pipe.

@@isvencastillo8710 just gotta play with it. 3rd gear and 20 runs pretty nice it seems to run better with the fine current turned down. I haven't played with it much on lower settings. I've ran max and 20 and the thing will really burn some wire. I've got the old old suitcase s-32p
good video if u really want to change the game for flat position structural try changing the gas to one with a higher argon content. this will allow true spray transfer no popping a splattering as with c25 gas's 80 percent argon is a good starting point

Maybe... still pretty new to it.
The first mistake people make is welding off of electrode positive. Check your wire and make sure it's not a electrode negative wire. Not many wires are electrode positives that I've used. 3M is about the only electrode positive that ive used.

Why the gas? Iron workers have been using those for years flux core. I've done structural I beams .045 flux core. Wind won't bother it.

Could you give me any advice, I’m 26 years old spent most my time in fast food and working on cars, I went to school and graduated with combination welding and can’t seem to find a job. Everywhere wants 5+ years experience but how am I suppose to get that experience. I live in Corpus Christi Texas if there’s any tips you could give me like start off as a helper or just any refinery job any tips would be great!! Really want to start welding. Have a great day bro!
well your time in trade school I would rack that up as experience then I woud go hire on somewhere and just show them what you could do. .
maybe they will hire you as a welder after a couple months of them knowing when they put you in the rack they dont have to worry about you.
Put a real ground clamp on it or u can take a short piece of lead strip the insulation off of it and kind of wad it up and then connect the ground clamp using the wire between your ground clamp and your work piece it just gives it a more space to ground to talk to you later buddy be safe
I was thinking tht could have something to do with it but its a 300 amp stinger but we have been welding this bed out with it and have had zero problems so far.

How did you learn to weld
Mario I went to one semster of welding school and dropped out because before that I was in Texas and was a welder helper. So I went back to being a welder helper. Worked all day learned to fit pipe that way thn at night I practiced my welding.
Jacob Schofield yes I understand that welding school can be hard that what my uncle told my and I’m going in to high school and there we can get welding class and I knew about that I said I’m taking them because that is a big help they teach how to pipe weld every thing else like grills .

Been playing with it. Ive owned this thing for almost a year and havnt really got to mess with it. but we are using it like crazy to weld this bed together.
Unless someone told me I had to run dual shield I would not bother. I run lots of T11 wire, no gas, EN is the hot side. Fabshield 21 b is what I like best. . 045 and. 1/16th. Running the gas line plus the extra expense of gas is self defeating.
Buy an rc then. I've owned ln25's, 8 and 12 rc's and 8 and 12 vs's. Now I use an 8 VS. Much much more portable than a 12vs with 35lbs wire and and 15 foot gun. If you're thinking of buying a unit don't overpay by buying miller's latest and greatest. I got by just fine for a long time with a ln25 that had analog meter and was mfgd in 1997.

Hi Jacob , love your channel mate 👍 - I run Hobart Fabshield 21B also off my LN 25 , It has to be DC Electrode Negative for self shielding wires ( reverse the polarity on a Miller ) ..Using 1.2mm wire size ..... does a beautiful job here in Australia 🇦🇺 🇦🇺🇦🇺 ...
