Making The Switch To Miller Pipe Pro

  • One of the most frequently asked questions I get... how do you like the miller pipe pro and is it worth the purchase. I am about to give you my PERSONAL OPINION!! Miller Welding has in my opinion gone above and beyond the call of service. There machines are incredibley reliable and function beautifully. One of my favorite things about them is the consistency of early in the morning to end of the day. The machine works for you. Now some of the other features I like is the fuel economy and size of the machine. For about 25.00 you can burn rod for upwards of 2.5-3 days for 10 hrs a day. That equals money SAVED and money kept in your pocket. Customer service seems to be another big one on why guys and girls are switching over. These machines have quite a bit of computer stuff in them which shouldn’t frighten you away from them. Miller has put your mind at ease with there incredible customer service. Most of the time when a machine breaks down miller has demos all over the country where they can usually put a machine on your truck so you don’t miss any days down time is money lost!! They have completely taken care of the hard working people that rely on Miller’s name to make a living go check out Miller Welding.

When starting this career, the SA200 is a lot less money. The newer machines offer the axillary power and the weld quality. With the newer machines you can grind, run lights and weld at the same time. Starting out where do you get the money for a machine without going into debt.
Best part of this video is you spending time with your son, wife and brother. Happy Holidays and Be Blessed.

My 73 200 has been my machine my whole career. It's got a million hrs on it (with rebuilds and general repairs). I've tried the Miller's and with time practicing I could certainly use one. I've also played with all the new Lincoln's, and they are fantastic also. For me nearing the end of my career I just have to spend it with the machine that's been there for me through it all.

Been welding heavy wall pipe and industrial pipe welding for 45 years. Just retired and have a hobby metal business now. I have had a 1963 SA200 for 40 years. It has been and still is a fantastic machine! With that being said, I own and have a 2008 Miller 350 ac/dc TIG runner and a millermatic 250 mig and a 110 Miller 110v mig. All of those machines have been awesome! At this stage in life, unless something becomes to cost prohibitive to repair, I won’t be purchasing new. Whatever suits the operator, is what they should get. Have a merry Christmas, all.

Ive got the 400 and I love all 950lbs of it. I even try to to persuade the die hard Lincoln guys. Expecially when I’m welding and there fiddling with the brushes, rack, or the throttle adjustments. I Use to have the 302d trailblazer. Loved it but very very loud machine. Wireless remote is the best money I’ve spent on it.

I bought a 250 bobcat back in 2014 and i couldn't be happier with it. miller does build good stuff even if it is on their low end side. i got a kick out of you playing with your little guy. i was doing the same thing with my youngest boy tonight. he'll be 2 in February. cherish your time with him because they grow up too fast, my oldest son will be 9 pretty soon and boy it went by quick. I bought a 97 225NT with 98 hours on it last fall. I had run a Miller AED-200LE (1975) on my service truck prior to that. In the beginning I hated the way the bobcat welded compared to the older Miller, but after spending a few hours learning I’m happy with it. I also have an 73’ blackface re-wound in copper but For the field repair stuff I do (and the price I paid) I can’t beat that Bobcat.

Adding on the Miller customer service : I bought a PAPR Miller auto-darkening welding helmet new on a pro shop on ebay in the USA, but got it delivered in Canada. Unfortunately, the lens was defective, it would drain the battery even when switched off. Got a bit worried that I wouldn't get covered as it was bought in the US and that it would be a nightmare to send it back to the seller. So I tried and went to a local Miller reseller. I was pleased to learn that Miller covers their products internationally without any hassle. 3 days after that I had a brand new replacement lens in exchange of my defective one, free of ANY charge. Now that dealer is my go to place and I will always prioritize Miller products, at least when it makes sense financially. International coverage of your products is a huge plus.

Jacob Schofield so I had about, 30 minutes of run time on it before I went and took a test in North Dakota, I had to secure it to my truck with some brackets, never ran a beed or anything before going to test, showed up ran a couple stringers, passed the test😂😂😂 it’s like night and day compared to the old Lincoln’s I was used to, but in a good way really consistent hardly messed with the heat, it helped because a didn’t have a helper.

So here is the flip side for the amateur who sees this stuff and thinks "well if it is good enough for a pro, it is good enough for me". The same support ethic that works for day in day out welders does not work for me. And obviously I don't weld pipe. So I bought a Miller tig and was thinking of upgrading to a Dynasty for my aircraft work. I don't want my wings falling off, so I want a good machine, easy to use lots of processes. But the hours will be really low. Several years when I am past the warranty, I will have less time on it than a pro in a few weeks. The economics of the high cost high service don't work out for me. If I buy at 25 I want the same machine to last me till I am 65 or beyond, and there won't be one 1000 dollar earning day in there. So Miller giving me a loaner won't help me keep up. Very sage advice for a pro though.
I know guys whose boards fried and they got stiffed by Miller. My experience with my Maxstar was all good. But every time I visited my dealer I literally saw Maxstars that were sitting on the desk waiting to be carried back into service. That could be my Maxstart, but mine will last till I am past the warranty. So I am not paying extra for a warranty.
But basically with all the low cost chinese machines ,or being easily able to tap into second hand through Craigslist, etc... The Millers have to compete on service. That is basically irrelevant to me. What I need is either a mechanical machine that can be fixed by me as a guy with basic skills, or I have to risk it and buy one of the better chinese machines to get the computer processes I need at 1/3rd the cost, knowing that if they break down I can still get service by writing a bad review and then they contact me. That actually did happen to me they shipped me an updated machine.

You would think that rather than make guys go through a process of getting used to the machine, you would think that Miller ought to be able to read the output of say some guy's old SA200 and give them a setting that matches that perfectly. Then they would at least have a home base to work out from while they get used to the super settings computer machines can be come up with.

I’ve always been a fan of what’s tried and true. I’m partial to Lincons yes, but I’ve always wanted to let the bugs get worked out of new technology before I invest my money into almost anything. I wouldn’t mind welding with a PP400 If it was owned by someone else however. “They’re all good when they’re running good”
The main beef however I think everyone can unanimously agree on today’s SAE 300s is their desperate need a 10kw+ generator.. and of course Lincoln’s.. how you say.. “Hit or miss“ costumer service.. Love the vids man✌🏼🇺🇸

Timestamp 2 minutes and 48 seconds... You got to know history!!! Back in the day the Lincoln's had a CV option standard!!! Lincoln called it variable voltage.. or constant voltage.. the big Millers.. came standard with constant current.. if you wanted a constant voltage at the machine you had to pay extra.. it was quite a bit and there was a wait time.. and those circuit boards failed over and over and over and over again... Nevermind I've been world and in-between with Lincoln at first but yeah now definitely Miller...

It’s a DC arc, you only have two parameters to work with. Volts and amps. Miller can scam you all they want but their is nothing to program other than how your watts are made up.
6010 = higher voltage to make up for the increased arc length, 7018 = less volts required because of the short arc.
Lincoln uses a rectifier type where a generator is direct coupled to the engine giving you the smoothest arc you’ll ever get. Miller just threw their XMT machine guts inside the pipe pro frame which takes the lower generated current and runs it through a bunch of electronics screwing up the smooth arc in the process while adding a bunch of circuit boards, cooling fans and wiring to go wrong. Of course they’re replacing machines, they are taking them back to see where they screwed up.

It’s an interesting machine, change one setting, it effects what you need in terms of amperage, hot start, and dig. Excited for your next video when you have yours! Everyone says downhill it runs best on soft, so far I agree, but for the slickest caps needs to be on crisp

"I will never go back" might be a little bit harsh statement there!!!! my dad went thru Lincoln welding school years ago. I grew up welding with Lincoln & they are great machines!!! that being said I don't think they have kept up with the changing technology that has developed... I used a Chinese made inverter machine last week that really impressed me, I know it wont hold up to daily use but for a home shop use would be ok!!! there is always a learning curve when you change from one anything to another, glad to see the little feller starting to walk!!! Go home & have a MERRY CHRISTMAS with the family!!! keep us up to date on how everything goes with that new 400!!!

Ran Lincoln's (short hood 50's model and a couple 60's models) from the late 80's until 2005 when I switched over and bought the pipepro 304 w/stainless package and the 100' miller remote for $14,500 when it was first available down here in south Louisiana back then. Welded mainly on 36" and 42" 1.218 wall thickness pipe using 5.0 and 3/16 8010G 70+ and never had a problem. Changed the oil and filter every 200 hours and the fuel filters every other oil change. Every job I ever got on that lasted more than two months and the welding was blowing and going nonstop 6 days a week, very seldom would the job come to an end with many if not all the Lincolns having had some kind of problem throughout the duration of the job.
14 years later I still have the 304 and not once in all those years has it ever been to the shop other than for maintenance. They only made the 304 for two years and then discontinued it for reasons that are unknown to me to this day.

good video, i wonder why miller never came out with their own real generator. they bought out hobart and they used to make real DC generators that welded like the shield arcs. miller could have grabbed a bigger share of the pipeliner market instead of going with even more electronics and complexity. lincoln is imitating miller with their cross country machine, have you tried one of those yet?
my old 1959 long hood SA-200 still welds better than my inverter in the shop and the 59 is much simpler and you cant tune an inverter the same way
i am lincoln all the way because they financed my first welder and got me started in business so i am a little biased. also i have never had any problems with my lincoln machines i bought new.

If you develop the ability that machine has the capability of running any mild steel ( 6010, 7010, 8010) downhill cap on a buttweld pipe joint so slick you will be tempted to tack the cap on just to make sure it doesn't slip off😲😜🤣
