TW: ED I love how this movie represents a popular girl without any ED jokes like when Carla ate that hot dog at the party and did so confidently I was embarrassingly surprised because you NEVER see this stuff in movies especially early 2000s movies. Which just goes to show how normalized people have made EDs like theyre supposed to be something you should have. Great point. I don't think it's that creepy that she fantasises about a celebrity, many young girls do that with their favorite artist without thinking about the age gap. It's just that, a fantasy. But in real life they never get romantic and that's the important part
I was thinking the same thing, idk why it bothered her so much when it’s such a normal part of a fan girl phase most girls go through at that age, and the movie never makes it more than just a fantasy. She even ends up with the friend, Sam, so it’s not like the character herself realises it’s just a fantasy

Watching this as a kid with similar music interests (and ridiculous icky romance fantasies) to Lola it made me relate to the character more and made more sense with her edgy outlandish glam rock inspired looks. I think making Stu Wolf the member of a boy band might've taken the movie to a more Stuck in the Suburbs sort of area. YES! To me, it makes all the sense in the world for both Lola and Ella to be interested in different music than most of their peers. Stu kinda reminded me of Jim Morrison and his band of The Doors. I think that if the movie had been set in like 2014 real world, the girls would have been the Arctic Monkeys type, not One Direction.
It's a very realistic part in the movie. I've never paid attention to fashion in movies except for times when the fashion is the focal point of the plot or just really stands out, but your channel has really made me appreciate just how much work and skill comes into fashion choices for characters and set designers. These jobs are so important but never get recognized and it's sad.
I’m glad you do! Honestly, before watching ModernGurlz I would appreciate the outfit and put it on my wishlist without thought. But now I too can analyse the fashion and understand it’s true meaning. Like for example, in clueless the change of outfits to show that passage of time like how they start with plaid in the film to show that it’s September.
It is. I'm not really into fashion but this channel is amazing. Fashion choices is a big part of a film's identity and I love that this channel shows how a character's appearance can really show who a character is. So much goes into film that gets overlooked and costume design is a big one.
Love how when Lola is feeling low and insecure, she's wearing that green/pink combo that Ella was wearing at the beginning of the show. This is such an awesome video and totally confirms why this movie was my favorite growing up!
I remember thinking that this movie had the most realistically dressed teens ever. Like yes there were preppy rich kids who were designer stuff all the time but there were also kids like lola that looked fashionable and cute without all that money. And that not every teen is super fashion-forward! Like Ella, some of us clearly wore what our grown-ups allowed us to wear and looked conservative, even frumpy, sometimes. I remember loving Lola's outfits the most because I felt like I could actually have outfits like hers by finding cute stuff at a garage sale or a thrift store for really cheap and make my own looks that were cute and unique.
The instant I saw Lola's baby blue outfit, I was reminded of Cher's outfit in Clueless when she failed the driver's test and got into the fight with Tai. It is definitely more dramatic, but the elements and color are almost the same.
Lola definitely does wear designer! For example the mesh top she wears in her audition is Gaultier. She just doesn’t wear branded designer probs bc the costume department wanted to make it seem like she wasn’t as her character isn’t meant to have money
I think it also speaks to how Lola cares more about how an outfit LOOKS than about showing off the brand itself. She doesn't buy (or thrift) designer because it's designer, but because she likes how it looks, which is a huge difference between her and Carla, who is all about showing off brands to flaunt her wealth
@@CreoTanyeah I honestly do the same, my outfits can be second hand, hand me downs, or anything like that and I’ll wear them because they look good, it doesn’t really matter what I wear unless it looks good😅
Someone pointed out that the side characters repeating their clothes (like Carla's J'adore dior shirt) is to emphasize on Lola's extraness and shows how she would never repeat outfits
@@ModernGurlz Yeah you did point out that when Lola reuses a clothing item it makes sense, so that still emphasizes that she always goes that extra mile and puts more effort when it comes to her appearance
Yeah tbh with a shirt that expensive I could see her rewearing it, but not within like a couple weeks. Idk maybe she’d wear it like once or twice a year but I feel like she wouldn’t have reworn it like she did in this movie right after she had just worn it.
Tbh I don‘t mind it. For me it symbolises, that this one T-Shirt has value to her. Maybe it was a present or she just really likes it? I always like, when you can see that characters have special pieces for them, they come back to. Like Gretchens Creoles in Mean Girls. With that I don‘t feel so bad, when I repeat my outfits, lmao.
Lindsay has been in so many iconic fashion movies. I miss the early 2000’s. The movies were just so relatable but yet fantasy. You should do a video on GET A Clue or Just my Luck ☺️
since i’ve gotten several comments about it: no, i did not take inspiration from another creator for this video and i especially did not “copy it”. i wasn’t aware of that video’s existence until after i’d posted this video and it had no bearing on my analysis. i’ve been making style analyses since last year and have said i love the costumes and costume designer for this movie on multiple occasions. two different people CAN come up with similar points if they’re looking at the same source material, that’s literally what good analysis is. we aren’t pulling the ideas out of thin air, they exist within the context of the film.
it is absurd that people think you "copied" someone. this channel is a FASHION channel that often analyzes characters outfits in film, it would be a crime not talking about confessions of a teenage drama queen! keep doing you! love your channel💖
I believe you. You have been doing this for awhile now and I actually thought the video in question was yours until I noticed the pfp and different voice. People need to realize that YT is HUGE and there are many creator's that cover the same subject manner and have similar styles. Just because those styles arw similar or they uploaded something first doesn't automatically label you as "copying"...especially if you have created content directly associated with those themes prior to someone else doing so.
I love that you mentioned Fran Drescher in her 90's sitcom "The Nanny". I would loved a video about her style in the show (probably a rank of your most favorite looks that she worn or something like that). Fran is a fashion icon of the 90's to me and she needs more recognition.
I really wish you would just follow me around talking about what my outfits mean and when people are like "Who is that?" I'm like, "Ssshh, she's talking about why I always wear combat boots."
I have a theory about Ella's (borrowed) flapper dress and hairstyle. It's possible the reference to the style of the 1920's symbolized Ella's new found rebelliousness and confidence. In the 1920's, flappers were considered as a "new breed of women" that went against modern age society by cutting their hair short, wearing short dresses, wore more makeup, drank, and smoked. While Elle definitely didn't fall into that description, I'm sure she began to feel that way when she lied to her parents and went along with Lola's shenanigans.
I can't believe I never noticed that Robin was played by the Canadian icon Ashley Leggat, Casey from Life with Derek who both brought an entire generation up thinking the sexual tension between step-siblings was totally normal and also very enviable.
One bonus little detail that you didn't mention is that on the scene where Lola auditions and sings "Don't Move On", she arrives with a basket with fake flowers which is a reference to Eliza Doolittle's job as a flower girl in the play My Fair Lady!! Which tells us that she strives to win the protagonist role!!! ITS AMAZING HOW THE SMALLEST DETAIL CAN MEAN SOOO MUCH!!! 🤩✨🙌💖💐🌹🌺
When I was a kid this was the only DVD I owned so I would literally just play it over and over. I feel like I could probably recite the entire movie from memory.
I had no idea how much this movie impacted my style until this year when i rewatched this movie for the first in 15 years. Definitely got in my subconscious.
YEEES!! I also relate to that!! Lolas outfits have been living in my head rent-free since 2004!! Plus the train makeup/dress up montage!!! SO ICONIC 🤩😂😎👒👗👚
Honestly... Same!! This movie is soooo ICONIC and so underrated! Many of my friends don't even know this movie and I'm like...HOW?? Also, I LOVE Lola's extra personality and as a kid I thought that I would love to be Lola's friend!! 🤩😂🤭🎉🎊
And the music is Pure Imagination from the Gene Wilder Charlie and The Chocolate Factory! Definitely fits fashion analysis in a cutesy but important way :)
I found one that’s similar just minus the bottle caps. 😩😩 I’ve always wanted it sooo bad! I love how Lola styles it too; wearing it at different lengths with different outfits!
Pink can mean femininity, love, affection, and friendship, while green can also mean balance growth, vitality, and wealth, and freshness, and youthfulness, so it makes sense she wears those colors because of those meanings, the meanings of those colors mean in a nutshell, hope, and resilience, which makes sense for Lola
It was. Younger and poorer me would fight over if I wanted Megan's closet or Lindsay's. Vintage me loved Lola's outfits (the purple fringe dress her friend wears is my favorite) but wannabe rich me wanted Megan's clothes too. Lol
when lola dresses in blue to talk to ella's parents, it parallels with carla's pastel blue outfits while trying to appear more innocent during her audition and rehearsal. both characters are concealing their true selves and being deceptive. instead of a foil character, carla seems to mirror lola, as if showing their similarities and possibly signifying who she could have turned out to be in another world...
i LOVE this movie so much, when mcr brokeup i literally watched a million times lol. i’ve always related to lola so much bc i also dress with a specific end in mind so i don’t have an “established” style, but i do love alt clothes the most
Also in lola's dream sequences everyone is decked out in super cute fashions as well, showing us that in Lola's perfect world everything and everyone is extra.
Although no self respecting New Yorker would wear an I❤️NY shirt, they were definitely a status symbol when I was a kid. It meant you were not only wealthy enough to go on holiday to NYC, but your parents could also buy you a souvenir.
I’m so excited you made this! I loved this movie and I feel Lola’s clothes were more of an inspiration to me than I realized at the time. She was always unique and stood out.
In fact, Lindsay on her interview with Vogue about her life in looks, when she explained the story behind that outfit, she said that the only thing she asked for is to be dressed up like Britney. Imagine having one of the biggest female teen actresses of the 2000s being inspired by the biggest female popstar of that decade when it comes to fashion. If that's not ICONIC, then I don't know what it is (especially since years later we got the ICONIC picture of Lindsay, Britney and Paris).
my 1 problem with this analysis: gurl, when I was 14 years old I was CONVINCED I was going to marry a 50 year old Johnny Depp. Lola's Marilyn dream sequence is extremely PG lol
I think the point she's trying to make is not that it was rare or w/e, but imagine if u as a minor playing a role had to intimily dance and almost kiss a man o much double your age, it's wrong of the producers to let that happen, not bc it's unrealistic fantasizing but simply bc that was probably not comfortable for the actress!
Yes kween thanks you for this gift! So glad you pointed out the Edwardian/“My Fair Lady”/“Pygmalion” connection to Lola’s audition outfit! Definitely my favorite and I too was mesmerized by how chic and creative it looked on Lindsay. I don’t know if you noticed too but she also carried in a basket of flowers too which I think was a total nod to Eliza Doolittle and the cherry on top of an already amazing ensemble. Totally did not connect the red “Eliza Rocks” dress to Audrey’s black and white Cecil Beaton dress and I thought that was a clever nod. On a side note, while I totally get where you got the matador symbolism for mourning outfit, I actually thought it was a clever way to incorporate the “Britishness” of Sidarthur as I feel like their style/aesthetic/sound owes a great deal to British baroque pop/rock/punk acts like Adam Ant, who famously sported the 18th century British military style jacket that also inspired the look and style for Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Prince, fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, and Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida” era.
Same (unpopular opinion I guess sadly but I still think she can look so gorgeous nowadays and her current look actually reminds me of her "original" redhead pale self from the movies pre-Freaky Friday and LA Lindsay, like current Lindsay is all I can think of when I watch Get a Clue and Life Size and it's sad some people just say she looks old/lost her beauty etc - ofc she has unflattering moments, that obviously are the ones that get posted online the most - but it also happened back then during her "peak" tho, she was always a unique beauty, and a chameleon she can look so different with diff stylings. ok this was a lot longer than it should've been 😂)

I'm guilty taking MOST of my fashion inspiration from this film during my tween years. AND I GOD, I COMPLETELY FORGOT THAT COW NECKS WERE A THING BACK THEN. One thing that Lola's taught me about fashion is to dress however I feel, I don't have to stick to a particular aesthetic, I can still dress grunge and then classy the next day. Nothing matters.
I love how you got into detail for every outfit and its meaning behind it. I usually take a closer look in the feelings and story behind the outfits in fantasy stories (and sometimes period dramas) but thanks to this channel I'm learning that there's more than meets the eye in these type of movies and that they also put a lot of time and effort into desgning the clothes for more realistic non fantasy stories. It's either the Wardrobe Coordinators were reaaaaaaaaaaally good at their jobs, or ModernGurlz are reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally good at perception. Either way I wish we had more of this thoughtful dressing today.
I think wardrobe coordinators receive the script with scenes so that they can thoughtfully set up the costumes. Not sure everyone does it thoughtfully for evey movie they work for, but I think they would for a fashion based movie. And I agree, ModernGurlz is too good!
I believe that Lola's outfit for the audition features a vintage Jean-Paul Gaultier shirt from his Soleil line. It's a French sailor sheer top. A perfect touch of designer vintage that's popular among younger generations.

It's totally a reference!
OMG YEESS!! 🤩
@@kittyelgato4246 Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so!
I just posted a comment saying the SAME thing
@@nahomidiaz It's funny how memorable that outfit was.
The “uh ohhhhh” every time Carla comes into the movie is forever implemented into my brain
Loved the song since the first scene, it’s called “never leave you” by Lumidee
I’ve always loved how Ella wore so much pink. Usually, I feel like pink is reserved for main characters, so I welcomed this change😌
YES! Pink is usually reserved for the popular pretty mean girl so it’s nice that they changed it up a bit.
@@CreoTanyeah I honestly do the same, my outfits can be second hand, hand me downs, or anything like that and I’ll wear them because they look good, it doesn’t really matter what I wear unless it looks good😅
Someone pointed out that the side characters repeating their clothes (like Carla's J'adore dior shirt) is to emphasize on Lola's extraness and shows how she would never repeat outfits
lola does repeat outfits! (she wears her leather fringe jacket a couple of times as well as some other random pieces)
@@sophie9984 Exactly! Everyone has a favorite shirt or article of clothing they like to come back to for different reasons.
Lindsay has been in so many iconic fashion movies. I miss the early 2000’s. The movies were just so relatable but yet fantasy. You should do a video on GET A Clue or Just my Luck ☺️
Yes!!! Get a Clue particularly I mean I still see ppl talking abt the outfits on twitter often
I’m so excited you mentioned Just My Luck. I loved McFly as a kid so I loved that movie! Get A Clue had a lot of memorable looks too.
Get a Clue was elite! I love how her fashion sense was a key part of solving the mystery, too.
@@dandyIion13 I was just saying that. MG needs to review _Get a Clue_ (2002) and eventually _Just My Luck_ (2006).
Megan fox is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood
I completely agree.
it’s a shame that she’s been over sexualized over the years that she isn’t in as many movies anymore
Megan Fox did nothing wrong
@semi omg yes and her angelic voice
Yea but her acting is horrendous
that "ah ohhhhh aH oHhhhh" beat that came on every time Carla Santini would come around😭
Lmfao yes!! It's Lumidee's "Never Leave You (uh oh!)" hit from back then!
since i’ve gotten several comments about it: no, i did not take inspiration from another creator for this video and i especially did not “copy it”. i wasn’t aware of that video’s existence until after i’d posted this video and it had no bearing on my analysis. i’ve been making style analyses since last year and have said i love the costumes and costume designer for this movie on multiple occasions.
two different people CAN come up with similar points if they’re looking at the same source material, that’s literally what good analysis is. we aren’t pulling the ideas out of thin air, they exist within the context of the film.
it is absurd that people think you "copied" someone. this channel is a FASHION channel that often analyzes characters outfits in film, it would be a crime not talking about confessions of a teenage drama queen! keep doing you! love your channel💖
You do you boo, I love your channel!
Maybe this is a good segue into doing a potential collab. Like the moral ending of "Confessions of a HS Drama Queen," shake hands and make up.
I loved this movie cause Lindsay’s character was such an individual and didn’t have money but dressed the best due to her own creativity.
You should totally make a video on The Nanny’s costume design
I need this so badly
I LOVE The Nanny!! Would love to see a video on this💞
Yess!! Fran never had a bad fit
please!!! this is such a good idea
I'm sorry my first thought was Ms. Doubtfire and I was about to make a whole quote about Robin Williams being a fashionable drag queen
I really wish you would just follow me around talking about what my outfits mean and when people are like "Who is that?" I'm like, "Ssshh, she's talking about why I always wear combat boots."
Screaming I want this too but for my kitten heels, bright patterns and glittery eye
And am I crazy or when at 10:46 we see a guy who looks suspiciously similar to Carlos Bustamante aka Carlos from YTV? Was this filmed in Toronto??
Actually Ashley Leggat played Marcia, not Robin lol. She was absolutely great in this film, though
This movie had the Y2K girlies absolutely QUAKING in their Juicy Couture velour tracksuits.
Don't forget Tiffany heart necklaces, PUMA's, Burberry, and Dior!
Why are you calling me out like that 😭 pls I just got it but you didn’t lie tho
had me QUACKING🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆

Lindsay was a moment honestly
This was my favorite movie when I was a kid! I still like it to this day
frrr omg
The reason she wore pink and green when she was at her lowest point was a reference to her switching roles with her friend temporarily!
Please do Daphne from the Scooby Doo movie or outfits from Dream girls bad movie I know but the outfits and makeup are amazing
OH MY GOD DAPHNE OVER ALL THE CARTONS PLUS MOVIES AND HOW THEY SHOW HER CHARACTER TYPE IN EACH WOULD BE CHEFS KISS, ID PAY
omg Lindsay is such a legend and we were robbed of so many more great performances in the last decade 😭
Megan Fox's style in this movie was definitely the epitome of early 2000's fashion!
When I tell you I thought the I love NY shirt with the mesh over it outfit was the epitome of fashion

We stan our moderngurlz icon analyzing cult movies like this one.
The outfits in this movie are ✨immaculate✨
Britney Spears also looked fabulous in low rise pants. Lindsey's last outfit in the school play + her dancing kinda reminded me of Britney.
THE WAY I SCREAMED WHEN I SAW THE NOTI!!! THIS MOVIES OUTFITS ARE ICONIC!!

Same :) my old school crush was 17 years older than me (BTW he's still handsome as hell), so hold my beer, Ms. Steppe ^_^

On a side note, while I totally get where you got the matador symbolism for mourning outfit, I actually thought it was a clever way to incorporate the “Britishness” of Sidarthur as I feel like their style/aesthetic/sound owes a great deal to British baroque pop/rock/punk acts like Adam Ant, who famously sported the 18th century British military style jacket that also inspired the look and style for Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Prince, fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, and Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida” era.
i am so happy y2k looks are back i can finally wear the clothes i wanted but couldn't afford/was too young for.
Lindsay Lohan's beauty leaves me breathless

@@luuuuux_ Chè Guevara was a communist revolutionary in the 50s and 60s. He played a major role in the Cuban revolution, helping to oust the former government that was basically a puppet of American imperialism, and which treated the Cuban people terribly.

One thing that Lola's taught me about fashion is to dress however I feel, I don't have to stick to a particular aesthetic, I can still dress grunge and then classy the next day. Nothing matters.
Lindsay Lohan is the main character, and Megan fox is the "Mean girl" 😂
The universe was exactly how it should be back then 😌

I kid you not I watched this movie yesterday and wanted to see if there were any videos on it! Your timing is impeccable!
Also congrats on your new intro! :D
Yeah it definitely is. I noticed that unlike it says in the video Lola does wear designer stuff but it’s just not obviously branded like Carla’s
