@c 猫 yeah honestly go to a gay bar and everyone's trying to dress like a damn euphoria character lol it just depends where you go. But some people dress more out there where I live.
@c 猫 i think its unrealistic because they are in school and could get dress coded and most importantly bc those are designer clothes and they probably wouldn’t afford it, but i still think it works for the show
The costume designer for Emily in Paris is Patricia Fields, she also styled the original Sex and the City. Patricia is no one to turn your nose up at, even if Carrie isn’t your style the way they styled Kim was damn near perfection
There is this show called younger, which had those millenial new york fashion moments, as well as like devil wears prada [though luxurious brands, the looks in them were iconic]. For gen z, since the show set in high school, i find euphoria's fashion elements from all walks of outrageous (maddie) to grounded (lexi). 🙌
THANK YOU. I see fans using the cam girl storyline to both hate on Kat or act like she’s some #girlboss. She’s literally just a teenager with self-esteem issues who feels like she has to use sex to be taken seriously by men
I'm not sure, how camming can be empowering for a teenager. Having an upper hand or control in sex (as in sense of experimentation), i can understand, but camming? not sure! It is like "who want to be sexually liberated at 15?" 😑
@@Sun.Shine- people kept attributing that arc to "sex positivity" and "body positivity". she was mocked and her privacy was invaded when boys leaked a video of her first time ever. she turned to camming in an attempt to take control of the situation and to hopefully feel better about herself, but we see in s2 she still struggles with her body image and her views/feelings on relationships has been warped by her time online.
I don’t think it’s the outfit, but it’s more on how she looks, physically, like her super long lean legs, blonde hair, pale face, big eyes and hairstyles are what makes her look anime
Exactly and there are so many teams in the industry that have shown recently how well they can do the Winx aesthetic. It’s incredible that Netflix missed such a great opportunity to set trends and gain attention around teen content that isn’t negative despite them being a huge company with the ability to have and make the best. I see Disney kinda doing the same now.
One little thing I noticed is when in season 2 Nate dressed up Cassie in YELLOW. A colour she's never worn. I think that this represents how she isn't herself and truly lost herself too
I saw a tiktok that explained that that dress was from a designer collection meant to represent the life of a working housewife in the 50s and a take on the infantilization and objectivity of women. pretty much what Nate sees in Cassie. I can’t remember the designer or the brand but it’s definitely moving.
Also there's the fact that the moment Nate gave her the tape, she started wearing skirts and pink, which I found surprising because she still didn't leave her more antistablishment but added the feminine skirt and pink color.
exactly! a major theme of euphoria which is completely under discussed is how jules's existence disproves nate's entire ideology and that's why he's obsessed with her.
I didn’t even realize that the sparkly purple gown was a callback to her childhood pageant outfit. This show can be a disaster, but honestly I really want to see Maddie become happier and healthier
Rue has my favorite style on the show and I’ve started to try to wear some similar stuff. I especially like it cause my body type is v similar to Zendaya’s
@@mynameisreallycool1 I dress like her now, it I rather be comfortable and if I gotta run I'm already in sneakers. 🤣Plus I hate showing excess skin, it's not for me. I'm twenty three for reference.
@@j1430 The actress herself is of Mexican descent and in the show after the assault she’s having an argument with her mother in Spanish (well mostly her mother is the one speaking Spanish), so I think she is supposed to be coded as Hispanic/Latina within the show.
I think the costume designers mentioned that Maddy starts also wearing more green because of her closer relationship with Kat, who also wears a lot of green pieces
say what you want about euphoria but you can’t deny the impact this show has on the current generation’s fashion. i’ve seen so many looks online and irl inspired by maddy and jules’s style
@@ambriaashley3383 it probably also has to do with the state you live in and how old the people you hang out with. i live in cali and am in high school so all our trends are based off euphoria’s fashion and makeup rn
The stylist had said that maddys outfits are from the 2000s but also from the early telenovela Latina stars in the 2000s like rebelde etc.. a lot of her style is Latina originated! I think that’s just v important to mention
@@canvas_125 I was NEVER a Rules shipper (I can't stand Rue and I always thought s1 Jules should be with someone else, literally ANYONE else) but during the S2 finale, when Rue walked away and started saying "Jules was my first love"....I legit started crying. It was just such a heavy feeling idk
Glitter on Rue's eyes is such a psychedelic moment, so simple yet telling. Maddy/ Alexa looks like a real-life Bratz doll, I love how her wardrobe and makeup depicts her feisty character. Btw. number one question in my head while watching Euphoria was, how hot is the weather in the place they all live? Cassie stomps around in a mini dress and sandals on New Year's eve! And they chill in the backyard hot tub not so long after that. Is the weather in California really that warm?
I’m from Florida but I have heard that southern California doesn’t get too much colder than down here (it’s just less humid). Our winters are considered summer (or spring at best) in a lot of places temperature-wise, so getting in a backyard hot tub or walking around in mini dresses makes sense
Jules dresses like a magical girl. I think it’s important to her character, her outfits would fit in 90s Sailor Moon. I think she also mentions Madoka Magica, but idk
She does! When Rue asked her what she was doing later she says that she was going to binge watch madoka magica, and I believe fez says she looks like a sailor moon character.
In the Halloween episode, I love how each costume reflected the character's respective personality. Rue and Jules are Romeo and Juliet, ever the Star Crossed lovers. Lexi is Bob Ross, an obscure reference to most of her peers, showing how she's often left in the background, yet stays true to herself. Kat is the protagonist from "Ms 45", which reflects how she's tired of being used and ignored by boys. Maddy was Jodie Foster from "Taxi Driver", while Cassie was Patricia Arguette from "True Romance."
@@thegillmachine yes she was, but since Jules is Juliet in Romeo + Juliet, Rue wearing a tuxedo creates the imagery of being her Romeo even if her costume is different
I wish you talked about the dress that Nate dressed up Cassie in, in episode 7. It's a dress from the Moschino Spring-Summer 2022 collection and absolutely perfect for her character in the context of being Nate's girlfriend. For those who don't know, that collection was criticised for infantilising women and sexualising toddlers/babies as it used prints associated with babies and nurseries. While I don't necessarily agree with this (but then again I'm not too familiar with Moschino and Jeremy Scott so maybe they have a history with this and there are some hidden meanings I didn't catch, and if that is the case please let me know), it was perfect as Nate wants to control Cassie (and the other girls) and basically treat her like a child. The dress is a representation of the person Nate wants her to be (in the context of the controversy especially) as sexual while also being childish, not even being subtle about it. Cassie, by wearing it, shows her full commitment to being that fantasy. But otherwise a great video as always!
@bij pls yeah I personally didn't understand or agree with the controversy, but since it tied in with the themes of what the outfit symbolised in the show I figured I'd mention it
when watching season one, i just thought that rue was careless with her outfits or whatever, which is why she was seen with that one maroon hoodie. but lemme tell you when they revealed it belonged to her dead father.. WATERWORKS
I think it's extremely dismissive to say Rue hadn't watched that movie. She dances to Frank Sinatra's songs twice in the series and generally seems to have a love for the oldies. I imagine it's her father introducing these things to her, perhaps them watching old movies together when he was dying. I can imagine they maybe watched that particular movie together, and she found it fitting to dress up as her as with her new gay love. All music is really curated to each character and Rues music is 1-to-1 to her costume.
I remember in the scene where young rue takes oxycontin for the first time shes waching an old black and white tv show with her dad, so it seems like her dad and her liked to wach those older shows and movies.
I think Jules's trans identity has a huge bearing on her costumes. Natural makeup like lexi's or cassie's enhances pre-existing features, but Jules's more creative makeup shows her relationship with her body to be one of modification and self-creation. For some trans people who are pre-surgery or choose not to have surgery, hair and makeup etc are some of the only ways to show their gender to the outside world or feel like they actually have control/ownership of their physical selves. Also for the Halloween costume: there's a good chance that Jules picked her own name. obviously Jules can be short for the traditionally male name Julian so if that were the character's dead name then Jules would be a natural choice and not one that she came up with entirely on her own, but it still seems likely that Jules picked out her name. I think it would make sense with her character's back story if the name was inspired by Juliet- choosing this name, especially to a young kid, (maybe 11 or so?) would represent archetypal femininity and the ability to be loved, even though this parallel does foreshadow the self-destructive relationships she has with other characters as you point out. If Jules was inspired by Juliet in picking a name, dressing up as Juliet as self affirming and also points to the construction of the self and the way that Jules constantly battles with treating her 'self' as a facade that comes on and off. This attitude towards the self as almost a costume is due to/reflected in social stigma about being trans, her wish to escape places where people have fixed ideas about her- eg moving in with her dad or trying to run away-, what she says in the bonus episodes about viewing femininity not as a part of her but as an exterior entity that she should conquer, and the way that she in season one performs a version of herself that will appeal to men, as you rightly point out. I think the costume decisions have a lot of nuance to them in this respect. Anyway great video really made me think!!!
I don't know a single trans person, including myself, who picked a name based off their dead name lol - but this is really insightful analysis and rings true for me
Lexi’s winter formal outfit (blue satin and black choker) kind of reminds me of Cinderella too. I feel like their stories in that moment have a few parallels as well.
Also their names themselves actually point to what you're saying as well. Ruby "Rue" - Ruby is a gemstone that is considered to be symbol of success and it can go for ten of thousands of dollars on the market. However Rue her nickname means Regret in Greek - showing both her literal regrets and that she is not currently living up to her potential due to her substance issues. Jules - Jules is a very androgynous name - it can be used as a nickname for Julian , Julia or Juliana as well as on it's own which lines up with her gender identity issues. It also has a meaning of soft - which is how Jules , the men who abuse her and the audience sees her. Katherine "Kat" - Katherine is one of the oldest names in the book meaning pure. Pure is how everyone sees her until her foray into SW. Kat or cat like references however has the opposite association - usually being associated of aloofness and sexuality such as with the catchphrase Sex Kitten. The change up from Katherine to Kat shows the transition from innocence to control. Alexis "Lexi" - Alexis means defender which could point Lexi's role as Rue's defender and closest friend in the show. Alexis is also considered to be the "little sister" name of Alexandra , not gaining popularity until the 1980's while Alexandra has use dating all the way back to right before the first world war. This shows her "little sister" role in the lives of the main characters. Cassandra "Cassie" - Cassandra means shining or excelling which represents how Lexi sees Cassie as the shining star of their family. However Cassandra is also based on a greek tragedy about a woman given the power of prophecy who is destined to never be believed. Which makes sense as no one ever believes her recounting of events with Nate or even her own reputation. Also the nickname Cassie to me also sticks out as a very girl next door name - short , sweet and pretty but never taking up too much space. Madeleine "Maddy" - Madeleine means high tower showing the high regard that Maddy has for herself as well as the fear the other characters such as Cassie have of her. She's in her high tower away from everyone else - the center of attention. The nickname Maddy is also associated with mean girls - if you look up mean girls names online Maddy usually comes up. This adds to the sense that she is meant to be feared.
rue does not mean regret in Greek, I don't know where you got that from. The word ρους (ɾus) from ancient Greek translates to the flow of water, could also mean flow of history or direction of events.
Lexis style is what I find the most attractive on other women but it doesn't suit me. I can't wait to hear your opinions on the iconic Oklahoma outfit, I've been defending that outfit the whole time haha they just were hating cause she was doing something different. But I love when Cassie leans into that style.
This video just made me realize how much better first season is not because of the outfits, i loved those in s2 as well, but how everyplotline had a meaning or was resolved, how much every character was meaningful on its own and how good those intros were, and how muxh more they were actually in school!!!! They did not feel like teenagers in this s2 idk
The one style i loved the most was Jule's in the first season. It's very aspirational to me, i want to dress like that. when fez mentioned her in relation with sailor moon, it clicked to me. The clothing style of sailor moon (specially when they are in spring/summer) is my favorite. I see myself wearing all of the clothes the sailor scouts wear
@@Smile-ni9nc urgh yes! I also love that pink skater skirt with the black and white stripped turtleneck usagi wears. They serve looks all the time, my favorite winter style is Makoto with her bomber jacket, amazing
Lexi to me is pretty. I mean she has a really pretty face, pretty eyes, nice figure, nice hair. I feel like she was just as pretty as most of the other girls on the show, in real life she would be turning heads.
She looks just like her real life Mom (Leslie Mann) but as a brunette. It was an "awww" moment for me when I noticed it in the series but yeah she's gorgeous
@@ambriaashley3383 this and her smile with the red lipstick gets me especially when she went to meet Fez in his store and the camera focus on her with the smile cause i remember her mom in the 90s with the signature red lipstick and her beautiful smile especially in movies like Big Daddy and George of the Jungle💁🏿♀️
I saw her without makeup and I personally just can't agree with your comment. I honestly found the other girls drop dead gorgeous without makeup but it wasn't the same with Lexi. She has very dark eye circles and hollow eyes, lots of pimples/pimple scars, a wide mouth and a round button nose. I personally find these facial features unattractive but to each their own. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. She looks very pretty with makeup and she does have a nice figure, so I guess that's proof of the talent of the makeup crew and the designers.
@@someonenobody5582 as someone that believes in "all peole are beautiful" if i had to focus on the societal beauty standard then yeah of course COMPARED with the other actresses she isn't really appealing which makes sense that she was cast as the " the basic boring brainy brunette cause that's what she looks like which is why she RARELY gets featured for her looks in many edits and lists as opposed to the other girls and having seen her Vogue video everything what you said checks out from her dark circles and acne which she showed. But you also said BEAUTY is in the eyes of the beholder so people FINALLY acknowledging her beauty is nice for once like Damn😬🤦🏿♀️💁🏿♀️
@@libragoddess98287 They commented on her beauty and so did I, I just shared my opinion as they did. I'm not stopping anyone from doing the same and "acknowledging" her beauty.
have never watched euphoria, but their wardrobes was to live even if didn’t really fit into the in real life scenario, i especially LIVE for Kat personal style
while it may be true that jules is "overcompensating" to look feminine in season 1, i also feel like people outside of kawaii fashion communities don't understand that a woman can 100% dress very femininely just because that's how she wants to dress. i think "female empowerment" to many people, especially in the west, is equated to women dressing boyishly
but on the contrary, i'm also aware of testimonies from trans women that they dress very femininely especially early on in their transition to pass/for survival, so i absolutely don't mean to erase the specific significance of a trans girl character dressing very femininely.
@@citronquartz2779 thank you for being aware of that, it might seem like a little thing/detail but it means a lot. people forget (especially in this type of videos) to mention that jules is dressing feminine to be able to pass and for survival so no one questions her and as a trans person myself i really appreciate when people notice and say that. thank you.
28:35 It's interesting how even though as kids, and Lexi's actually younger, roots of her style actually appear there. What she's wearing isn't entirely off from her style as a teenager, I think the peter pan collar is interesting. Peter pan collars have been previously associated with youth, but with the advent of the 2010's and the twee aesthetic, peter pan collars now take on a more mature meaning. It's like she found her style early on, which is reflective of the self-assuredness that comes with maturity, even if that maturity wasn't your choice. And they also contrast the two; Cassie legit looks like a four year old, even if she's older.
Also when Cassie looks in the mirror to clam herself down while crying the scene reminds me off 'I, Tonya' and I think that also reflects on how Cassie wanted (or because of her dad) to be a professional ice skater as well as how people think she's just a pretty girl when she has her past trauma.
i dont get why people hate cassie so much, i think she is an absolute amazing representation of the mind of a teenage girl with low self esteem. she is desperately clinging to any sign of affection and love. just like some girls change their interest/hobbies/fashion style for the guy they’re currently dating (which isn’t anything wrong with it, it just kinda comes natural when you spend so much time with one person) cassie becomes just as toxic as nate is. nate pushes her limit and boundaries mentally and she is so wrapped up in it and manipulated that she cant even tell the difference between love and abuse. everyone keeps hating on cassie but where is that same energy towards nate who is literally the one who manipulates and abuses not one girl but three girls who also all happen to be friends?
because she broke girl code be fucking the ex of her bff and stayed with him they often forget 1- she was drunk 2- he clearly manipulates her 3- she is mentally ill and needs help ASAP
Probably everyone agrees that Nate is terrible and I think people are allowed to hate cassie. But it’s wild that anyone thinks her behavior is worse than any other character. Cassie parallels rue and Lexi to me, without the positive character development of rue and people still like Lexi even though her play was hurtful to her sister and exposed all the other characters personal issues
People are allowed to hate Cassie, it's understandable I mean she knew Nate was doing horrible stuff to Maddy and still slept with him. But the context of the story still needs to be reminded, Nate met Cassie while she was drunk, slept with her and had a secret "relationship" with her while abusing and manipulating her. Cassies actions were wrong but I feel like people ignore why she did those actions and continued to do them in the first place.
Nate is a literal psychopath I don’t think anyone is denying that, when it comes to Cassie I think people are more just disappointed and annoyed. Her inability to own up to her mistakes and her constantly choosing some gross dude over herself and friends just gets old and boring
As a trans Mexican girl, my favorite styles are Jules and Maddie’s. My own signature style has always been a mix of those two. In my 25 years of living, I never felt so represented in a show until Euphoria. This show is going down as legendary.
I feel like Cassie represents the worst of us, every vulnerable moment we’ve had. As much as we hate her and push away those parts of ourself we need to embrace those and heal them and treat them with care
Thank you for pointing out how effy from skins is portrayed as admirable!!! I hate how people say that skins is more realistic or less glamorized when it’s literally the opposite. I grew up watching it and there was a lot of harmful shit tbh, the characters of Cassie and Effy were extremely romanticized.
People say Skins is less romanticized? Lmao I personally think its a better show, because I was in highschool in 2009 and relate to Skins a lot more. But its not exactly heavy on consequences. I dont think romanticization is the dirty word the internet thinks it is anyway. The romantic art movement was valid, and not everything has to be pushing a positive message. Art is expression and that expression shouldnt be cross referenced with societal ideals to be considered 'good'
@@dylankennedy4539 yeah people definitely throw the word around too much bc they just learned about it a couple of years ago on the internet. While skins is very nostalgic to me it definitely did have a lot of issues with romanticization of effy and cassies characters in my opinion and also just had some story writing that was kind of harmful. Like I remember in a couple episodes Cassie gave pretty much a step by step instructional on how to get away with having an eating disorder which insecure middle school girl me definitely took to heart.
@@dylankennedy4539 yes , menswear has so much untapped potential , it’s always in its own bubble meanwhile literally everything has been tried with womenswear
I mean, I guess that's also because most guys in the show are shitholes and aren't the type of guys to experiment outside the societal norms of being masculine. Except Ethan, we love Ethan lol.
They gave Nate a tiny bit of makeup in season ones finale I think, but I wish they did it more often. There are daydream scenes that could use makeup on the men who would never wear makeup, or in situations with a clearly unreliable narration from rue.
Lexi also wears a lot of batsheva! A brand that gives vintage silhouettes a new take, something Lexi does a lot, especially presenting as a more mature person.
i genuinely can't express how much i love maddy so much, she's probably one of my favourite female characters of all time. Shes so, stylish and feminine, with a good heart towards her best friend. She's not afraid to express vulnerable emotions, nor is she afraid to express confrontational emotions. She's dominant, put together, powerful, knows her worth and has unlimited confidence. Her outfits are just flawless, I love her so much
43:33 In the poolside scene in S2 when Maddy is talking to cassie bout nate, Selena's "Como La Flor"is playing in the background. The song explains how the guy has a new lover It foreshadowed how maddy's love for nate was gonna die in a hurtful but beautiful way by having MADDY be the one to walk away once she found out
I always thought that the end of season 2 when Maddie wears a lot of green after wearing black is like a changing of the seasons, winter being black and spring being green as if she’s welcoming new life and new change.
Lexi had my favorite style moments. Aside from it being more “appropriate” or realistic for high schoolers but I loved her subtle prints. The way she layered her clothes was really good too. She for sure didn’t took basic or blend it, but she didn’t stand out.
Cassie also wears a lot of velvet and velour when she’s put in situations that make her feel lesser like when she gets an abortion because it is such a soft fabric I think that could represent how her mind is kind of fuzzy almost
Can we just say how much of an impact euphoria has had on the fashion world the past 3 years ? I honestly believe it’s being Y2K back in full force with the 70s, ik some people dislike Y2K however it’s my favourite trend to ever happen. I just love it
I also really love the fact that Maddy was gifted that purple sequin dress at the end of season 2! It’s definitely a callback to her early pageant outfit and the color fits perfectly into her season 1 palette, which to me was symbolic of Maddy getting back to finding herself again and gaining her confidence back. Super loved this analysis, everything you said was spot on! Can’t wait to see the looks that season 3 will bring :)
My dad also passed from cancer at 13 and I still wear his flannel to this day (I'm 30 now). Rue's maroon hoodie and penchant for the darker baggier looks makes me feel seen. Clothes have such an impact on society and how we view each other. Costume design is so slept on for the amount of work + talent it really takes.
This video and show actually made me realize that I have an “impress men like Jules” mindset, so I just started wearing Rue / Skater inspired outfits and it makes me feel lovely and equally balanced between my masculine and feminine fashion. ✨💝
Maddy's clothing choices is always a suprise but you could tell who the character is immediately even without proper identification, she's really dressing effortlessly yet it still draws attention to her and almost all he time she wears sexy clothes making her body figure more obvious and visible, which shapes her character, vile but beautiful
I've never watched Euphoria and probably won't for a while, but from what I've seen I think every single character in this series needs some heavy therapy
this analysis is so coherent and accurate, this show has a complexity way above what we’ve gotten used to see from teen shows (mostly from this sort of streaming platforms), and i think people were very quick to misunderstand many characters, plot points and arcs. i think its not a “sunday easy watch” for sure. this really captured a lot of that complexity i think. i loved this video.
Thank you for having such a holistic view of Cassie!!!!! I get so tired of hearing they hate towards her because yes, what she did was wrong, but she is experiencing an overwhelming sense of lovelessness and just had an abortion. A lot of people can relate to her character and that choice (|sometimes unconsciously) to participate in a toxic love cycle because it’s painful to be alone and deal with the trauma she’s experiencing from men. Her father leaving her, having her nudes spread, constantly being pursued only for sex, and then now being trapped in a abusive relationship with Nate. So many people can relate to the breaking yourself down to be love, lack of self love is so real. “It takes two to tango but someone needs to be the leader.” Such a great and well rounded statement to summarize this arc. Yes Cassie is wrong to betray her friend but she’s actively having a mental breakdown and is being manipulated for love. She deserves accountability and empathy!
I haven't seen Euphoria, but based on what you said about Lexi: exposing her friends, how she seems intellectual, more inexperienced than the others her prom look I got a big "Cady from Mean Girls" vibe from her. The prom look especially, it really reminded me of that look Cady wears after she became a "Plastic"
@@mynameisreallycool1 I feel like people who make excuses for some but condemn others missed the point of the season. The point is no one is good or bad. It’s not black and white. I feel like people missed the nuance and just saw a pretty white girl against a woman of color and instantly sided with the woman of color. Idk
I have a soft spot for Cassie. She’s so pretty, so vulnerable and lost. I love Maddy too, but she scares me a little bit. Euphoria is a great show, all the actors are doing an awesome job.
and to answer the question at the end, i'm a bit conflicted honestly because i'd love to choose separately; when it comes to makeup i love Jules on s1, and Kat's outfits look pretty amazing, but Maddy's entire look is something that i just couldn't look away from through the series
i loved this analysis. wardrobe is often overlooked and its importance in media can be underestimated. but shows like euphoria really are the reason why wardrobe is always more than just a superficial thing. thank u for making this video!!!
Does anyone else wish they could dress up to the degree of these characters? If I wear a dress, necklace and heels people freak out and think it's "Dressing up" this is without even adding the extra makeup and accessories xD
Considering how the popular "weird girl aesthetic" is strongly influenced by 90s Harajuku street style and Jules previously had a lot of anime/ kawaii inspired elements in her s1 outfits, I would LOVE if we saw her in looks in that style in season 3, it would be a sort of full circle moment too, with her coming to terms with both season 1 and season 2's styling choices.
I almost relate to Lexi to a T- "..Is symbolic of the character's maturity, honesty, and dependability, traits that she was forced to develop a result of her father's addiction, mother's neglect, and Cassie's irresponsibility." @31.21 Thank you so much for saying that, I don't think I've _ever_ heard anybody else say that. The way having to grow up at a young age *actually* is, is never talked about. People get up in arms or try to gaslight you, because it bothers them to know someone else may've had more self-assuredness than them in their teen years. And the ease of which too, because it has to be as merely a byproduct. The wallflowerness, only being spoken to when they need something, depesperate for human connections... Emotional intelligence, intuition, and just the journey of coming to accept that about oneself? It's isolating. Most kids aren't doing that, and when you show up as a little _too_ genuine, perceptive, emotionally expressive, you get kinda ostracized. It's like those traits make them uncomfortable and they don't even know it. The trying to appear more mature, from internalizing that responsibility, the loneliness.. Jc 🤦♀🤦♀
I love the contrast between Cassie and Maddy shown in their costumes and look. From their respective dance scenes (Cassie's figure skating, Maddy's beauty pageant), accessories like rhinestones, to revealing clothes (Cassie's wardrobes caters to male gaze while Maddy lean closer to female and paradoxically is less sexualized)
Maddy’s character reminds me so much of Adriene Lee from secret life from the early 2000s. Her color palette, the purples, blue, royal trends, and confidence! She was definitely inspired around that! Maddy is truly my favorite character, next to Lexi!!
I absolutely love how detailed this analysis is. Euphoria girls are definitely a huge fashion inspiration to me at the moment. Although, I wish Faye’s outfits from season 2 would have also been analyzed. I love her style as well and would have wanted to see Modern Gurlz’s interpretation
idk if anyone else noticed this but i JUST realized this and i feel so ✨intelligent✨ maddy’s childhood pageant outfit is Selena’s iconic jumpsuit from the Astrodome Last Concert. obviously there are some key differences, such as the star details, and that maddy’s jumpsuit hind of has the cut out inverted, but the shades of purple are extremely similar, and the flared bottoms are exactly the same. idk if this is common knowledge and i completely missed it but i thought this was really cool
Your analysis on Kat was articulate! As a teen girl myself, I admired her in the beginning because of her confidence. But your video opened my eyes and made me realize that she is just as insecure because her worth depends on men and pleasing them while disregarding herself. I can relate to wanting that attention, but your breakdown of her opened my eyes and now I know the value of self love. Hopefully I can learn how but for now thank you ❤️
I like Kat's chokers, corset and layered look but I also really like Lexi's dresses with collars, old fashioned almost preppy look. Kinda want them smashed together into one style that I can wear
I really liked jules journey, she changed the most ftom start to finish snd it’s really interesting to read into, especially with her relating hyper femininity to woman hood and her journey with thinking her relationships with men to woman hood and as she works through that her style evolves away from the pastel, fluffy style
I relate to Jules a lot. I do identify as non-binary, but I do sometimes struggle with the idea that I am "not non-binary enough" and over the years I just kinda realized there is no right or wrong way to be non-binary and I don't need to change myself to prove to those who don't even believe my gender exists.
I just noticed this but when the video about abusive relationships plays in season 1, Maddy wears the same coat Nate got her, somewhat signifying her attachment to him and her willingness to ignore his abuse.
EXCELLENT!!! Also, interestingly enough, in season 2 she [Maddy] does stop wearing blue as an entire outfit and instead black, however, you can see that in three separate occasions she is wearing black outfits that feature a light blue shade for the trim, like in her Marc Jacobs b-day dress; which ,depicts her still lingering feelings for Nate and their possible reconciliation
i think that euphoria’s costume design is what emily in paris costume design wish it was: iconic, coherent and trend setting even tho it’s unrealistic

Your analysis on kat was spot on. A lot of people misinterpreted her cam girl stage as legitimate female empowerment when it was an overcompensation
THANK YOU. I see fans using the cam girl storyline to both hate on Kat or act like she’s some #girlboss. She’s literally just a teenager with self-esteem issues who feels like she has to use sex to be taken seriously by men
I'm not sure, how camming can be empowering for a teenager. Having an upper hand or control in sex (as in sense of experimentation), i can understand, but camming? not sure! It is like "who want to be sexually liberated at 15?" 😑
@@Sun.Shine-Exactly, there's nothing liberating about a minor doing sex work.

I see Disney kinda doing the same now.
In a better Fate, Flora would’ve definitely have the same style as Lexi in Euphoria season 2

One little thing I noticed is when in season 2 Nate dressed up Cassie in YELLOW. A colour she's never worn. I think that this represents how she isn't herself and truly lost herself too
Also a color that only Jules really wears (Lexi a little but she's more ochre, not pastel yellow)
Yellow although it can have a lot of positive associations can also mean Jealousy in terms of colour theme. So maybe there's something there
I saw a tiktok that explained that that dress was from a designer collection meant to represent the life of a working housewife in the 50s and a take on the infantilization and objectivity of women. pretty much what Nate sees in Cassie. Jules dresses like a magical girl. I think it’s important to her character, her outfits would fit in 90s Sailor Moon. I think she also mentions Madoka Magica, but idk
She does! When Rue asked her what she was doing later she says that she was going to binge watch madoka magica, and I believe fez says she looks like a sailor moon character.
she has madohomu as her phone wallpaper
I think Madoka Magica is a good reference. It's a anthesis of the magical girl genre because there's a price that the other shows don't bring up.
Isn’t Rue Marlene Dietrich’s character in that one movie? The one where she kissed a girl and wore a tux?

But otherwise a great video as always!
oh wow that’s so interesting thanks for letting us know
@bij pls yeah I personally didn't understand or agree with the controversy, but since it tied in with the themes of what the outfit symbolised in the show I figured I'd mention it
when watching season one, i just thought that rue was careless with her outfits or whatever, which is why she was seen with that one maroon hoodie. but lemme tell you when they revealed it belonged to her dead father.. WATERWORKS
Oh my god yes, literally I have watched the show so many times and that scene always makes me ugly cry
It also belongs to Zendaya's dad. She said in an interview that it helped her to get into character.
@@februaryschild0216 is her dad dead ??
@@nikemaraje5 he’s alive

Exactly
Agreed 💯
And she also liked to watch movies with Gia as well.
Anyway great video really made me think!!!
the bonus episodes are honestly my favorites. i could have watched hours more of the conversation between rue and ali
this is great analysis!
I don't know a single trans person, including myself, who picked a name based off their dead name lol - but this is really insightful analysis and rings true for me
This kinda reminds me of a classmate who was named julie and i nicknamed her ms jewels and everyone thought i was saying ms jules lol
The word ρους (ɾus) from ancient Greek translates to the flow of water, could also mean flow of history or direction of events.

while it may be true that jules is "overcompensating" to look feminine in season 1, i also feel like people outside of kawaii fashion communities don't understand that a woman can 100% dress very femininely just because that's how she wants to dress. i think "female empowerment" to many people, especially in the west, is equated to women dressing boyishly
but on the contrary, i'm also aware of testimonies from trans women that they dress very femininely especially early on in their transition to pass/for survival, so i absolutely don't mean to erase the specific significance of a trans girl character dressing very femininely.
That is sooo true!
Thats great observation
i dont get why people hate cassie so much, i think she is an absolute amazing representation of the mind of a teenage girl with low self esteem. she is desperately clinging to any sign of affection and love. just like some girls change their interest/hobbies/fashion style for the guy they’re currently dating (which isn’t anything wrong with it, it just kinda comes natural when you spend so much time with one person) cassie becomes just as toxic as nate is. nate pushes her limit and boundaries mentally and she is so wrapped up in it and manipulated that she cant even tell the difference between love and abuse. everyone keeps hating on cassie but where is that same energy towards nate who is literally the one who manipulates and abuses not one girl but three girls who also all happen to be friends?
because she broke girl code be fucking the ex of her bff and stayed with him
they often forget 1- she was drunk 2- he clearly manipulates her 3- she is mentally ill and needs help ASAP
@@dotcom3015 i agree so much, imo lexi’s play in irl would be so much more hurtful to me at least than anything else

Now we have to see the Chanel opening with the Euphoria girls, I would love to see how they look in that style
Agreed, I'd be down for an analysis video on this topic!
Can we just say how much of an impact euphoria has had on the fashion world the past 3 years ? I honestly believe it’s being Y2K back in full force with the 70s, ik some people dislike Y2K however it’s my favourite trend to ever happen.
I just love it
Maddie's character and style is iconic though. Especially because she wears it so well with the attitude.
Costume design is so slept on for the amount of work + talent it really takes.
this is probably the smartest, insightful and most empathetic description of each character that ive seen so far tbh
Jules’ blue cloud outfit from s1 & Maddie’s New Years party outfit in s2 are literally my favorites
I've never watched Euphoria and probably won't for a while, but from what I've seen I think every single character in this series needs some heavy therapy
this is the most interesting and thoughtful UA-cam interpretation of the show's costume design I've seen so far.
Honestly, I enjoy Maddy's looks the most, even though her style is the furthest from my own. I cannot help but admire her.
this analysis is so coherent and accurate, this show has a complexity way above what we’ve gotten used to see from teen shows (mostly from this sort of streaming platforms), and i think people were very quick to misunderstand many characters, plot points and arcs. i think its not a “sunday easy watch” for sure. this really captured a lot of that complexity i think. i loved this video.
When we stepped into the similarity of rues and lexis style's periods, i understood how deep costuming can be
Thank you for having such a holistic view of Cassie!!!!!
I haven't seen Euphoria, but based on what you said about Lexi:
exposing her friends,
how she seems intellectual,
more inexperienced than the others
her prom look
I got a big "Cady from Mean Girls" vibe from her.
The prom look especially, it really reminded me of that look Cady wears after she became a "Plastic"
i would like to hear your take on the men's side of euphoria's costuming. fez's style was really interesting to me
thank you so much for going through the hassle of analyzing SIX characters in a tv show that has hours and hours of screentime with different costumes
Just rewatched your Mean Girls analysis and thought GOD DO I WANT SOMETHING NEW and there you are - like a✨ fairy ✨
I didn't know her actual character name is Ruby
neither
which begs the question, did she get her nickname from the hunger games? /hj
@@swain-Ix1tv maybe it was a nickname from her dad? Or at least one given by classmates.
Ruby? I thought her name was Ruperta.
its not
Thank you for having empathy for Cassie. People excuse everyone else’s horrible actions but condemn Cassie which defeats the point of the show
I've seen people say they feel bad for NATE but have no empathy for Cassie. She sucks, but the treatment she's gotten from fans lately is so unfair.
Season 1 Jules is my biggest style icon! I love her white blonde hair and the changing streaks
Look into the candy raver style of the 1990s, its VERY season 1 Jules
That’s crazy how she noticed Cassie’s makeup in the last episode perfectly matches one of Maddys old outfits!
Lexi's style reminds me SO MUCH of Spencer Hastings.
I really appreciate what you said about Cassie, it’s a very rational approach and it’s not just hating her for what she did to Maddy
and to answer the question at the end, i'm a bit conflicted honestly because i'd love to choose separately; when it comes to makeup i love Jules on s1, and Kat's outfits look pretty amazing, but Maddy's entire look is something that i just couldn't look away from through the series
Underrated but I love Rue’s clothes they are so simple yet they fit her so well
Wow, not only a fantastic outfit analysis, but also the best look at Cassie I've seen! Rly rly nuanced. Loooove it!
Maddy and Lexi’s styles are my fave
i loved this analysis. wardrobe is often overlooked and its importance in media can be underestimated. but shows like euphoria really are the reason why wardrobe is always more than just a superficial thing. thank u for making this video!!!
Does anyone else wish they could dress up to the degree of these characters? If I wear a dress, necklace and heels people freak out and think it's "Dressing up" this is without even adding the extra makeup and accessories xD
Do it anyways, there's no need to wait for an special ocassion, and its fun to do c:
ughh yes 😭 i live in a rural area and me being in platform sandals gets interpreted as "being too dresses up"😭😭😭
Considering how the popular "weird girl aesthetic" is strongly influenced by 90s Harajuku street style and Jules previously had a lot of anime/ kawaii inspired elements in her s1 outfits, I would LOVE if we saw her in looks in that style in season 3, it would be a sort of full circle moment too, with her coming to terms with both season 1 and season 2's styling choices.
Jc 🤦♀🤦♀
Me too😍❤
♥️♥️♥️
I love this video! So in-depth, and on another note thank you for not demonizing Cassie's entire character like so many people are doing
The fashion of this show is immaculate
This is a great analysis. If stylists are very critical and specific like you are that’s amazing.
I absolutely love how detailed this analysis is. Euphoria girls are definitely a huge fashion inspiration to me at the moment. Although, I wish Faye’s outfits from season 2 would have also been analyzed. I love her style as well and would have wanted to see Modern Gurlz’s interpretation
idk if anyone else noticed this but i JUST realized this and i feel so ✨intelligent✨
maddy’s childhood pageant outfit is Selena’s iconic jumpsuit from the Astrodome Last Concert.
obviously there are some key differences, such as the star details, and that maddy’s jumpsuit hind of has the cut out inverted, but the shades of purple are extremely similar, and the flared bottoms are exactly the same.
idk if this is common knowledge and i completely missed it but i thought this was really cool
Sometimes I wanna dress like Rue. Her style is so chill and casual I love it. But sometimes I wanna dress tf up like Maddy lol.
I love Maddy and jules outfits and I think most of the people love jules outfits in season 1 more but I liked her clothes in season 2 better
„While it does take two to tango, someone has to lead“ What an amazing quote! 35:09
I really love Cassie and Maddie's costumes, it just feel so right
