Crowds I was hanging out with thought Gukesh was going to win handily, because Ding had been playing so badly. But it was also widely thought that if Ding could avoid falling massively behind early his chances went way up. And maybe they did, but the problem I suspect is just fatigue. Ding's 32. And let me tell you you don't have the same limitless reserve of mental energy in your 30s that you do in your 20s. It's one thing to play a long chess game. It's another thing to play an entire match of long chess games, over and over against the same opponent, with the entire world watching. The pressure and fatigue I think just got through to him.
