Street driving TH400 , what it’s like with no Over Drive!

Video of me comparing what you would see for RPM and MPH with OD vs non Od automatic transmissions , car has 3:73 gears and 28" tall tires also has a .68 OD ratio and 3rd gear is 1.0.. Converter is a PTC flashes to around 4000 rpm when pushed into boost on hard launch and typical driving stalls out around 1800 ish.

According to some calculations I did. With 3.73 gears, 28 inch tires and 1:1 gear ratio you should be turning 2686rpm. So the fact that your at about 3000 means your losing 300rpm to converter slip. And with your overdrive you should be turning 1826rpm so you losing roughly 500rpm to converter slippage which is worse than non-overdrive slippage. So having a lockup clutch in the converter makes a huge difference. Do you have a lockup clutch in this transmission?

Close but tires have a substantial amount of squat. Especially aired down bias ply slicks. I'm assuming he's running 276/60-15 drag radials. Not as squished but also not a perfectly round 28". More like 27.25 and couple hundred rpm of slipping because its a high stall converter unlocked. 3,000 rpm is about right.

Milo Parker this is a 4r70w transmission, 3rd gear with OD and lockup off is the same gear ratio.

Probably not. But you can get a gearvendors for 2700 and you will have overdrive. I’m planning to buy me one for my 77 el Camino with a 540 and th400 transmission. The gearvendor is a must.
