Conrail cab ride & WM 6573 at Canton, Ohio 1989

- Oct. 11, 1989: Conrail crew invites my father and me to ride along; turned out the engineer was the son of one of my father's old friends. The Conrail caboose (CR 22131) is ex- RDG 94108.
The WM 6573 crew was working south on the CSX CT&V line to Mineral City after crossing the Conrail Fort Wayne line at CP McKinley, which can be seen in my video titled "Conrail Interchange and Timken Alco S-4...etc." The CT&V line has been removed from CP Mckinley to 15 St. SE and from Mineral City. RJ Corman RR now operates the section seen in the video with the CSX train.
That was one cool engineer to show you all of that stuff and give you a cab ride 👍. Obviously a PRR guy as he called the Van trains “Truc Trains”. Great video and a great history lesson too.
It was a great memory of my late father. The location where we got on & off was at the summit of a grade called "Buck Hill". I grew up near Canton about a mile from the PRR "Broadway" four track mainline that was populated by an endless parade of Baldwin Sharknose-led freights and passenger trains pulled by E-8's & E-9's. Wow that brings back good memories. My brother and I use to ride our bikes down to I believe it was Maryland park just down from Raff Rd and spend hour’s watching Penn Central trains. Those tracks use to be so busy! We took a Penn Central passenger train from Canton to Orville when we were in Cub Scouts because our dad was into trains too. We grew up on Spring Valley lake and went to Whipple Hts grade school and road our bikes to Raff rd from there just to watch trains. I Have old pics of E Units carrying freight and passengers we photographed with a camera we lugged around with us. Glad you posted this video! If my memory is correct that is Danner Press aka Drop Forge nearby?
Perk's was still there at that time. I think it's been renamed. Danner Press printed porno mags. I used to work at Wilson Rubber at Marion Ave,. down the hill at McKinley tower, which you can see in my other video. Thanks for the comment.
I grew up in Fort Wayne during the1960's-70's when the old Fort Wayne was still big time railroad all the way to Chicago. By 1989 most of the traffic was gone west of Crestline. Sad to watch that happen. But, this video was alot of fun start to finish! Thank you!

Ok this is super cool! I see you guys hopped on the train right at Raff Road. I can see the Speedway gas station and (glimpses) of Ferraro’s Restaurant. You guys headed west a few miles and dropped a couple cars off. (That’s Perry Dr. you crossed at 18:54). Then you made your way back to Raff Road.
I never knew that crossing used to be four tracks. Looks like from what I saw in the video that the 4th track began right at switch at Maryland Ave. (the spur track that leads back into Timken and Ashland Oil joins the mainline there as well). This video was taken three years before I was born, so that track had to have been removed not too long after it was shot.

Thanks for the comment. The four track "Broad Way" in Canton ran from Perry Dr. (CP Reed) to Fairhope ("Fair" tower). This link goes to a site that has track charts of these areas in the Penn Central era: pc.smellycat.com/maps/charts/index.html
One of my other videos ("Conrail Interchange etc...") shows what it looked like at Marion Ave. (CP McKinley). Another ("Conrail Trains [2] etc...") shows the area where Fair Tower was located (about 1/3 mile East of the crossing). At this interlocking Main 1 became the Bayard Cutoff(removed about 1964).
vidwilzvids I thought that it was four tracks at one time. A while back I was on Google Earth mapping out old railroad lines and I noticed that there was a pretty wide gap along some of the bridges on the Fort Wayne between Canton and Louisville.
That was the name of the game: four tracks - no waiting. The Broadway Limited couldn't have competed with NYC's 20th Century Limited without those multiple main line sections.
More than likely, the crew on the local stopped at Raff to get something to eat. I wouldn't be surprised if that was their daily routine.

Wow, 1989 was really late to see a WM loco and a B&O caboose in pre-Chessie colors. Great that he knew those were Pennsylvania and NYC units (even though they were rebuilt) 21 years after the PC merger. I wonder where the wide vision cupola caboose came from. I never saw one on Conrail.
I think that the "heritage" paint scheme was a one-off sponsored by a railfan group. After the engine had an internal fire it was rebuilt and repainted with a contemporary livery. The other GP40 in the train is also ex-Western Maryland. I've often wondered about the CR caboose myself.

I grew up about a mile from "Fair" tower. I remember the Nickel Plate and the PRR running on the Bayard Cutoff under the bridge of Rte 44 (Chapel St.) in Louisville. I have a few Canton/Conrail videos that show the area around the east end of Canton yard at the Broadway Rd. crossing. Fair Tower was about 500 yds East of that crossing. In one of those videos (ua-cam.com/video/Lh1ZiUkL-_I/v-deo.html), I'm standing on the cutoff right-of-way (now a bike/hike trail} where it veered from the PRR main near the Stark Electric RR bridge piers in Louisville. There is a great "Images of Rail" book called "Canton Area Railroads" by Craig Sanders that has photos of Fair and other locations. ISBN 978-0-7385-6111-0. Thanks for your comments.

It’s interesting how many more trains they ran on the Ft Wayne line at the time, you could sit there all day and see the same amount of trains that there were just in this video clip. Do you have any footage from the Akron area?

What you are RIding on is YICA-10 and Mail 44 would have 5 to 7 Loaded Autoracks of Honda from it Marysville, OH plant Marysville is just 30 Mins Northwest of Columbus in Union County

the Line South of Downtown Canton would run the way to Dover that Line South of 15th Street SE now own by RJ CORMAN the Line North of CP McKinley to Akron is Own by the CVRR and Lease to the W&LE to serve Customers in Jackson Twp and the Akron Canton Regional Airport and a few Customers in Green i know my Hometown to Well
I was at McKinley in 1980. On the B&O just south of the tower was a high ball signal.

That maneuver is called a "Dutch Drop"; in this case, the crew is taking advantage of the slight downgrade to reposition the locomotives.
