2006 barrows experience was being 10 years old walking all the way starting from varrock east bank, Trying to melee them and then dying and losing all your gear
Looking at old guides and the completely different approach towards the game, compared to present day(or even just last 10 years), puts in perspective the abundance of accurate information available on almost any topic you can think of, and many you can't. This was quite entertaining, thank you for sacrificing some of your time and sanity.
As a kid I used to camp the Dharok tomb as it was the most common room for people to die in. I couldn't do barrows myself so I just looted people who died instead
That used to be the case in early osrs too and even after they updated it to auto refill, you could still interrupt the filling animation on accident by moving until they changed that too
At the time of release, there was no home teleport so if you didn’t have a teleport you either had to walk back or die or have someone teleport you out.
oh man, I did not realize just how long the gauntlets were best in slot. those things came out in 2002 and weren't supplanted until 2006 when RFD's barrows gloves just absolutely blew them out of the water, replacing their +2 strength/attack bonus with +12.
The Verac's armor method was really good back in the day. After completing a run I would teleport to my POH where I had an altar to recharge prayer and a Canifis portal. The run through the dungeon, across the bridge, and briefly through the swamp to the boat was the fastest way to get back to Barrows.
I lived through these days. Ill take this era of low information gaming any fucking day over what we have now, being spoonfed by information and meta gaming and full explanation at the drop of a hat. Games were so much funner when you had to learn. The untamed wild west of a game.

if you adjust for inflation at the time of the guide I imagine that bonds would be like 3-500k and almost any barrows item worth somewhere between like 2-3m or more for things like veracs for KQ, ahrims and karils. even at 2 chests an hour at min stats/gear thats a big payout back then for sure
As someone who lived during the 04+ era of Runescape the Barrows Items were extremely expensive back then. A single piece that wasn't Torag was worth upwards to 10m which doesn't sound much today but back then that was a large amount. And even then Torag pieces were still worth 1 to 2mil each. Dragon Chain was still around 40Mil itself during the minigame's release and the dragon med helm was also still roughly 20mil which was a super rare drop from barrows as well.
I did barrows when it came out in 2005 and most people walked from Varrock. I'm 90% sure the ectophial you had to walk all the way down to the bottom floor of the ecto temple where the slime pool is to refill it, because I remember not wanting to use that for some reason. I'm also pretty sure it was the first one click teleport in the game; for some reason I remember people being really hyped about that.
Well back then some of the items were close to the price of a green mask or santa hat. Which today are worth a few bill. And a few items could get you a purple phat. Guthan spear was like close to 10m. Idr rares in 06, but shortly after ge, green was 10m, santa 13 and purple around 60-85 If you could get 4 items a day back then, you would actually be insanely rich. Basically if you weren't 8 years old like the rest of the playerbase.
The minigame was only 6 months old at the time with very limited useful gear and spells. People were still figuring it out what worked best and even then most people didn't even use Slayer Dart commonly until closer to 07. The times were different, we were all little kids(most of us anyways). It wasn't about speed and efficiency back then.
Back then, if you died, you lost everything except your 3 items and nobody used protect item all the time because we were all dumb kids. I could see not wanting to fuck around with things like staying around while screen shakes after Barrows to make sure of the outcome.
this is exactly how i did it 😭 i kinda miss when nothing was optimized and we sorta just ran in and tried our best with whatever we had, it meant the stakes felt higher and it was more satisfying when you did actually manage to do something
Running through the swammp area where the Juvenile Vyres are is new-ish when used in comparrison to the guide, they were added in 2006, whereas In Aid Of the Myrque was added in 2005, so the guide may very well have been created BEFORE those dangerous vyres were added, and it was just snails in that "safe" swamp route. Another thing to note is you mention how the puzzle may not have been a thing, I think it was just an oversight, 100% when I went to Barrows when it first released it had the puzzle. This was without a doubt in the game on launch. There's also the consideration that these drops were INSANELY RARE. Like I'm talking full guthans was 10m, DH was 7m, ahrims/karils was I think 3m? Guthans was by far the best for miles, and a whip was 3m as well. The loot, for its time, was great even with all those delays.
There is something truly beautiful about the arrogance of modern knowledge in a solved game on the modern Internet where there is a guide for literally everything juxtaposed to just whoever had the ability to get their guide posted somewhere haha
I remember being proud I felt like I could indefinitely stay at barrows with guthans. Biggest limiter was prayer which I think I would travel to burg to restock on. Gotta remember the price of some of the drops were insane. I think full guthans was 10m+ at one point with the spear itself being half the cost.
Prayer potions back in the day were 7k ea which is why they werent always used as much. Prices were different so if you had a time accurate pricing system it might make more sense.

I used to use chaose gauntlets and fire bolt to do barrows, you could get away with 43 prayer and like 40 magic and still do it, for the time, very efficiently

It was refilled right there where you teleported. Even after they made it automatic, you could still run away without filling it if you didn’t let it auto refill. I think since then, at least on RS3 they’ve made it where it forces it to refill even if you are spam clicking away. there were certainly a lot of quality of life limitations in the early game like that. Too many players these days think a ‘guide’ has to be an exact layout of every action to perform each second lol. The wiki wasn’t really a thing back then, at best you’d have had runehq or tipit and they wouldn’t have had most of the info that guide had. For example they weren’t saying ‘kill them in this order’ they were just describing each brother to you and giving you ideas on how to fight them. A better execution of that guide would be using house teleports for canifis portal and altar. Both of which were cheap and easy to make even back then. Killing the brothers in a normal manner and bringing an emergency prayer pot but trying to avoid using it if possible.
guides back then: People with realistic armor and items that are realistic to the point that youre suppose to have them, with armor upgrades in mind hence why doing barrows in the first place guides today: "haha just get this absolute end-game content that costs billions in the GE to do that content youre waaay over equipped lololol its so easy guys 100000 kills per hou" I hate todays community
The ring of wealth was pretty common to see in every pvm guide back in the day since everyone thought it increased the drop rate of all unique items

Killing the brothers in a normal manner and bringing an emergency prayer pot but trying to avoid using it if possible.
its crazy to think that there were older people playing this game while a bunch of idiot kids were too lmao they must've abused our idiocy to no end
myreque is pronounced my-reek (pretend its french and say it with a snooty accent)
Nope. My-er-key is correct.
guides back then: People with realistic armor and items that are realistic to the point that youre suppose to have them, with armor upgrades in mind hence why doing barrows in the first place
guides today: "haha just get this absolute end-game content that costs billions in the GE to do that content youre waaay over equipped lololol its so easy guys 100000 kills per hou"
I hate todays community
This is the reason no one got anything done 😂
