- Kenny Moore, a world-class marathon runner and a University of Oregon track luminary, read from his book Bowerman and the Men of Oregon: The Story of Oregon's Legendary Coach and Nike's Co-Founder on June 12 2006 in the Knight Library Browsing Room.
Moore's book is the first biography of Bill Bowerman, the legendary track coach and founder of Nike, who had an unparalleled impact on the sport of running. During his tenure as track coach at the University of Oregon from 1949 to 1972, Bowerman won four national team titles and trained dozens of milers to break the 4-minute barrier. His athletes set 13 world and 22 American records.
Bowerman single-handedly helped turn the college town of Eugene, Oregon, into the running capital of the world. In Bowerman and the Men of Oregon, Kenny Moore tells the story of his mentor and hero, drawing on years of taped interviews and the full cooperation of the Bowerman family and Nike, the company Bowerman helped to found through his invention of the waffle-soled running shoe.
A real treasure and a great book. Rest in peace, Kenny.
I have an obsession with Bill Bowerman. He is so influential, I became an Army Officer just like him and have an passion for running. I am now a private coach. Now all I have to do is co-found the largest sports brand, coach dozens and dozens of world caliber athletes... Haha.
