    I bought a used, no name, 3 piece home-wrapped kit for $75 off this sketchy guy who didn't know much about drums. 22x14 kick, 12x8 rack, 15x14 floor. Took them to my local drum tech, he had no clue what they were, but he estimated they looked 40+ years old. So I stripped it down, sanded down the insides, cleaned the lugs out, put it all back together with new heads. I swear I don't think I ever want to use anything else, the sound is unlike anything I've ever heard!

      +Diego Durán lol just saw this. A few months ago I took the wrap off, stripped as much old finish and glue off that I could, sprayed them with poly, and buffed it up. Not a perfect job visually, but they feel much stronger and stay in tune much better now. I'll send you some pictures

    I would recommend having a light cloth for the edge test, the fibres on the cloth tend to catch on every little detail. So if a crack just started the cloth will catch on it, where as your fingers may pass over it.

    • @wokeupinapanic
      @wokeupinapanic 6 років тому +2

      Lucky duck2067 - Uh, to be fair, guitars are way cheaper to maintain than drums. And that's coming from a guitarist lol. The problem is that replacing everything except sticks is anywhere from like $50-$1,000 depending on what you're replacing/fixing. Retubing and biasing a head costs what? $35? Replace the skins on a kit and it is easily $200+ if you do the whole kit. If your $1200 head shits the bed, you can take it to a tech and fix it for a couple ben's, but if your $800 cymbal cracks, well, you're out an $800 cymbal.

    When I was in high school I was given and old cracked Zildjian marching cymbal that had been dropped. It still sounded good and I wanted to use it on my set. So, I drilled a small hole at the end of the crack to keep it from growing and then I made it into a sizzler. Great sound and I used it for years with the crack never growing.

      Before the Zildjian factory in Canada changed name to "Sabian" (due to family feud), that factory were manufacturing the "K" series zildjians.
      Still though, Sabian and Zildjian company are run by the same related family.
      Sabian = Zildjian

      I prefer Zildjians as it sounds better to me until I came to play on a kit with Sabian HHX set whoah! just blew me away.
      What Zildjian series is in par with this Sabian HHXs? ..Some say it's the K which is near but not exactly.

    • @RobotequeMusic
      @RobotequeMusic 7 років тому +4

      Yeah...I think with Sabian, unless you pay serious $300+ you won't get anything. Their B8 starters are like pot lids. I like Wuhan a lot. Their basic low-end sounds fantastic. Zildjians are a legend for obvious reasons. Anyone here like Paiste?

    i bought my kit used, it belonged to the drummer of a pretty big band and was used and abused! its covered in scratches and dings and is in generally poor condition. but the bearing edges and runs where still perfectly round. it sounds amazing and i saved hundreds (if not a grand) on it!

    Bought my kit used for 1600 New Zealand Dollars. Got myself a Pearl 6 piece VSX limited edition Graffiti Graphic kit with Zildjian ZBTs. What made it better is the guy I'd bought it off had used it 3 times and he'd had it bought new and shipped over from Europe (because the kit was only limited to a European market). So I basically got a limited edition, brand new pearl kit for the price of an entry level pearl or Tama.

    I have never bought a whole kit second hand, always new for these reasons but I can say I have gotten a number of snares and cymbals through Australia's equivalent to Craigslist and also an Australian drum sell/buy/swap page on Facebook. Tricky thing is that most of them were interstate and I had to rely on blurry photos of the gear. I am possibly selling my giving kit and I have a guy interested in another city. I rang him up and explained every detail of the kit and was honest with everything about the kit. I'm going to take tonnes of photos and send it to him and he is super grateful for it. If I did not do any of this I guarantee he wouldn't be interested. Quite different doing deals not face-to-face.

      Carlo Loielo I do a lot of selling and buying too. I live in Chile, quite far from the capital city, which is where most business are held. So I kinda do the same thing u do, lots of pics, lots of details. There's nothing worst than a shady seller.

I replaced the stock resonate heads with Evans G1 clear, and bought a $50 dollar meinl crash, $65 Sabian B8 hi hats, and a $125 Sabian AAX china (all used) Kit sounds amazing now! sounds like an 800 dollar shell pack now!

    I got my kit from an uncle who couldn't play it because of their dog. It came with a China cymbal for the ride and a splash for a secondary crash. For some reason, it still sounded pretty good for what it was, a cheap rockwood kit. I was able to get my hands on some old zbt+ cymbals that I loved and now I modified the kit to fit how I play and now it's my favorite kit that I've ever played on in my 1 year of playing drums.

    I bought my kit used. It's a 6 piece Tama Superstar Classic (yep! the old good stuff!) in sizes 10x7, 12x9, 14x12, 16x14, 22x18 and 14x5,5. It's in a bloodred to a deep deep red fade finish and it is beautiful! It also came with hardware (mostly tama road pro series) which was a big plus. I bought it used from a music shop here in Sweden which is kind of unusual, but it has some history (f. example a couple of gigs/a tour) which I think gives it more character and feel. It's a beast of a kit and I could not be happier. Btw, you're awesome! Just found your channel and I just love it! Keep up the good work!

    I traded a guitar for a Pearl bass drum and floor tom that once belonged to a friend who died about a year and a half ago. These drums did some hard time as a touring set. You have great points but it was making me laugh in that this pair of drums failed almost every way. They're rough but I'm trying to clean them up and replace all the broken parts. I'm learning more and more from your videos - keep up the great work!

    Hey Dave! I just wanted to say thank you for making this video. I bought a used kit recently and I literally wrote all of the things in this video on a piece of paper and I brought it with me. I bought the kit from a guy that re-finishes drums as a hobby. The kit is from the 1970s. Asian mahogany shells. 12X9 rack tom, 13X10 rack tom, 16X16 floor tom, 22X16 bass drum, 14X6 metal snare drum (I think it aluminium) The kit also came with 2 extra toms from an old Tama Rockstar kit. 12X10 and 13X11. The kit also came with the throne, a bass drum petal, Sabian B8 Pro 13 hi-hats and an 18 crash-ride. It made by some Chinese company. Finally, it came with these really crappy hi-hats which sound more like mini chinas. All of this for $230. Anyways, point is, your videos REALLY helped me know what to look for and ways to modify the kit to make it better. Keep up the good work!

    Check cymbals for flatness by laying them on a table and sliding a piece of paper under the edge. I've caught a few that appear okay but, ultimately they were warped. Depending on the cymbal and you it may not matter but, can be useful for reducing the price.

I replaced the bass pedal with a twin effect pedal (which is amazing by the way) and replaced the hi hats with 14" Zildjian ZBTs and added a drop clutch. Spent more money on the slight upgrades than I did on the set, but it works. Thats all that matters.

Only issue: tension rod knob for snare was bent and they replaced a bolt for the fastener that was too long. After 30 minutes of rework and about the same on clean up, we have a nice drum to add to my set. Bought stands, hi hat cymbals, xylophone, gig bag, piccolo and sticks for $60. Thank you, Craigslist. Tama Starclassic performer b/b. Didn't worry too much about the cymbals because I intend to replace them, but they're also in surprisingly good nick (Old label Paiste 404s, much better than I expected, but I'm not a Paiste guy at all), but the drums were in fantastic condition; and the guy I bought them off was so knowledgable, honest and helpful that I was happy to pay a little above what others were selling equivalent kits for.

    So when I got my 70s acrolite share it had rust on the tension rods and a little in the lug. At first I thought this would be bad like you said but a little or decent amount of rust is not bad. I have found it to be a nice way to keep the tension for my snare. I used to use whit lithium Grease but stopped because I was loosing tension a little faster then if I did not.
    I still believe doing it the very first time you fix a drum is important!

    great info by the way. i would also add if your checking bearing edges i would pull the head off and place the drum ion a piece of glass or formica or any flat surface and take a piece of paper and run it against the drum and the glass to see if there are any gaps, or use a flash light to shine into the center of the drum to see if any light shows out from under the drum. i have done this with many new kits and out of the factory there were issues making for impossible tuning. just saying

    I bought a used rodgers kit for like 70$ whoever owned it before didn't take to much care of it so I took all the heads off (original heads) and cleaning the hoops and some of the tension rod holders were rusty so I did my best to clean those up. And when reinstalling all new heads I used Vaseline as lube and they work just great now

    About a year ago, I bought a used 5-piece DDrum Dominion AMX Ash-Maple haybrid kit with one rack and two floors. The kick is virgin, but has a bit of rash from the rack tom. The seller was straight up and pointed it out right away, but the price of $275 for an A/M kit and the sound of the kit overruled the rash in my opinion. I have no regrets on buying this kit as used.

      Matthew Singleton. Oh. oh. oh. with sonor, dw, tama and yamaha you are saying that mapex meridian is the best maple for the money? I had PDP LX. That was the best maple for the money. Just to add. I'm a maple lover. I currently have a Sonor s class maple. Bought it used for a similar value of meridian maple. You know what is S class for meridian? :)

    In addition. Hit the cymbal. If it sounds good, and passes the other tests, buy it.
    In addition. Hit the drum. If it sounds good, and passes most of the other tests, buy it. I've got some great drums used that had minor surface damage that I could live with and didn't affect the sound. I recently bought a used DW Performance Series 6 piece kit for 1200 dollars with cymbal/tom stands that had a couple of tiny scratches on the floor tom and a ding or two on the bass drum. Best sounding kit I've ever owned and other than the afore mentioned blemishes, everything else looks brand new.

    It's a Mapex Pro-M, which is a now discontinued model. I bought it because it was the only one in there with four toms.
    For how expensive of a purchase that it was, I didn't put much thought into it; However, I never regretted a single penny.

    The set I'm using is like 78 percent used. The kit is my uncle's 80s CB700 set which he gave me. 13x9, 14x10, 16x12, and 22x14, 70s Zildjian Cymbals, cheap ass brass hi hats, 11" wuhan China, 14 x 5.5 slingerland chrome snare and 14 x 5.5 CB snare, which I hand hammered(thanks for the idea BTW sounds fucking awesome). And a pearl 13 x 3.5 piccolo snare that I bought from a friend for 50 bucks. The hardware sucked, so I bought a mapex snare stand, cheap eBay boom stands, and ironically a Tama roadpro hi hat stand and throne, which the same uncle's nephew was throwing away. I use Evans g2 coated on the toms, Remo ebony which came with the set on my kick, Evans HD dry on the Slingerland, Remo Ambassador on the CB, and an old Remo pinstripe tenor head that my band director was throwing out on my pearl piccolo.

    hardware is very important. Is the seller selling the hardware as in cymbal stands, snare stands, hi-hat stand, etc, is so those should always be inspected too. Are there cases that come with the drums? if so, those also merit inspection. Pedals, or other hardware? Pull rods also need inspecting, etc.

    Im a pro used buyer lol. Ebay, Guitar Center Used and Reverb are the BEST resources. Always make offers when the option is available. I never buy any cymbal without a hint of the original logo. So far ive gotten amazing deals and sure its not $100 rides, but I mean $175 for a HH 22” Rock Ride with all logos and a clean finish? Um yes. Or a $150 mint HHX 20” Chinese? I even got a mint 19” Fierce crash, 18” & 20” xtreme crashes for $225 each. Granted that sounds like a lot, but considering they sell for $320-400 new thats about 50% off of the retail price. Just recently got a SUPER rare HH 16” Fierce Crash for $60 off Guitar Center. All logos, just needs a deep restoration polish. Even got a Tama 12” Melody Master Mint for $206. Just be patient and look for great deals. I buy more cymbals than drums, so I can find any Sabian for a steal deal. I should have my own shop lol.

    Had a used YAMAHA for years, was able to trade it in for $200 credit at Guitar Center, which is INSANE. Bought a new Gretsch Catalina Mod that I am still using. Best kit so far. YAMAHA kit needed constant maintenance. Not sure if it was because it was used or the quality. Drum sets seem to be as good as their lugs and heads. You can turn a cheap kit into a great kit if you put some EVANS 360 or pin stripe heads on.

    I traded a really nice custom built bicycle fpr my current drum kit. A Rogers 5 piece from the worst time in history for Rogers. It has surface rust on the hardware, slightly chewed up bearing edge on the kick drum, horrible ProFormance brand hi hat and 1 20" cymbal that are both brown from tarnish, the original Rogers heads and the kici pedal I had to throw away because EVERY screw was stripped out and the threading was thras. Oh and it came with 2 snares but the Ludwog snare Im using is missing a bolt for the snare strap hardware. He had it listed for $150. I got a really bad deal.
    I replaced the kick pedal with a Pearl Demonator 930 single pedal, tuned the heads and put a little sticky backed foam tape on the toms and a strip of the foam around the entire inside bearing edge of the resonant side of the kick drum and now it sounds pretty decent. Ill be replacing the heads at some point and Im totally broke but at some point Ill be getting another cymbal stand and buying w really cheap used cymbals to replace this horrible 18" ride/crash. This kit was never taken care of and was owned by a 30 something year old dude who bought it new back in high school and quit playing music shortly after. Possibly the worst case scenario, but I enjoy liberating instruments from careless people and giving them a loving home.

    For drums, make sure you measure them, because maybe it's says that a tom is 12" diameter, but when you see it in person it's actually 13" diameter. It doesn't make *too* much of a difference, but still worth checking

    This is very useful info. Do you have a video that covers what to look for, to distinguish cheap drums from decent drums? I’m getting back into drumming after twenty years away. Looking to buy a decent kit used somewhere but I don’t know what to look for. Number of lugs? Material? How to tell quality hardware from cheap stuff that won’t hold up for long? Thanks.

    I bought a used 4 piece ludwig classic maple kit from craigslist. I payed 1,000 for it which is almost half of the price of a new kit and I can't even tell they were ever used! A great way to get a good deal on a set is to ask to pay less than they ask just to see what they say. I did that and saved 100.
