I've used both my current home address as well as my previous home address and both locations are good beginner locations as they're fairly rural, and while a city is nearby, it's not nearby enough to factor in to the threat level of that particular region. It's kinda fun to see how well you can survive using your actual home address. Of course, you can also try locations like the Pentagon, White House, Disney Land, Fort Monroe, West Point, etc.

Alright Grand Rapids! I grew up in and my parents still live in Kentwood just to the east of where you started! Right about at M-6 and Kalamazoo. Maybe you can do a raid on their neighborhood in a later episode. Loving the gameplay!
I would always leave a squad scavenging until the car is full, and then return to the HQ, as you have enough weapons and people to form 4 more squads and defend the HQ. It is very expensive to travel long distances and return with the car half empty. In fact, I'm loving this series.
I reccomend walling between buildings to cut down on how many bricks you need. Just wall between buildings you don't convert. You've got plenty of buildings to wall between. They won't tear down abandoned buildings. They make a good barricade. Then you can pop a tower behind each wall section. Just a thought. Because you had such a problem with bricks your last play through.
I really hope they plan to add elevation to the maps, in a way that places we choose will look a bit more recognisable and feel a bit more real than the completely flat maps we have currently.
Holy crap! I put on this video as a passing interest and no more than 2 minutes in and I'm hearing the hometown of my father getting mentioned! Never thought I would hear Mount Pleasant, Michigan being brought up on a UA-cam video! Grandma was a professor at CMU, grandfather ran the Isabella County mental health hospital and I went there almost every summer for most of my life before 18!

I'm posting this at the beginning of the video. I'm from Grand Rapids. It was a great city. Past 10 years the homeless has skyrocketed. It's weird hearing you name these areas and streets and I know exactly where you're talking about. You should go to the Van Andel Arena or Devos Center.
I live in Lansing, so I've been trying various locations around Lansing, including the suburb-urban area I live in. I think it is pretty cool to be able to play with your own house in a game, not to mention locations you are very familiar with, like where you went to school, where you shop for groceries, places you've worked, etc.
I'm still playing the prolonged version waiting for the full release this Thursday, and in the eight days, I found 8 assault rifles and 14 pistols by fighting the kidnapper and finding a stockpile. Let's just say the swarm was as easy as pie to deal with on the last night.
Bro I just saw this video on my feed. Never watched a video of yours. My parents live on Byron and 44th, wife familys Byron and 54th, and I live on 44th and division. My best friend works at the bowling center park center lanes and my parents just a leased a building out of the strip right next to the lanes. This is crazy! I love apocalyptic games and I’ve been into dayz, project zomboid but I’ve never heard of this game. I used to play halo wars all the time looks kind of similar.
I mean yeah, you may cannot utilize a big HQ to its full capacity, however, like you pointed out in the lasts series it has still the benefit of higher HP.
Wyoming MI is in Kent County, as a suburb of Grand Rapids, basically. Much easier to associate a relative location by the major city than it is the minor area around that city. It’s also confusing when that suburb is named the same as another state. This is why instead of saying “we’re going to Port Washington” where you’d likely have no idea where that is… I’d just say I’ll be in the New York area.

mount pleasant? I lived over in Weidman for a time anyhow mount pleasant makes sense you got the bunker/tunnels under the college area but I'm going to go for Adrian once I get this installed
i hoppe the game devs will do 2 things 1. ensure some good elevation stuff ,both as landscaping tool for the survival aspect of your fortifications since the lay of the land how it affects attackers is a big part of why castles grew up in some places 2. re-work the map algorithm so that yes , chose start area aka START area ,but your not 'imprisoned' in said start area much like factorio be the perfect style you can expand as you wish or just ..move.. area as you wish
and ye ofc also have to fix stuff like 'units' should be able to fire at individual other units regardless if seeing the 'command' unit of another grouped force or not and things like obviously buildings should still be functional to the same % they are intact while adjusted or expanded or repaired , and of course still dam exist XD a wall dont turn etherial just because you start lay bricks in the hole it got
and dang , ye the current assets , fixed map sizes and no elevation algorithms for landscape realy makes so only dull flat american citys can be rendered half decent , not to mention with the trope of most buildings in urban areas being multiple story height ....towers & walls.. seems like a secondary schematic development compared to just ''lower floor reinforcing & ramparts'' to turn multi store buildings into add-hoc bastions of concentric defenses with ramparts infront of them and fresh wall between them ...rather then around them

there is a more game breaking bug still in there since prior update, which is that save and quiting then restarting from save can essentially break the game as it can't load the save. dunno if it's because of clearing too many buildings and other things but it's ruined several people's play throughs. The reason i say it may be due to the clearing too many buildings and what not is because usually it would first start with small oddities of respawning plants or buildings that were not there from the first play load (which has also caused the game to be unplayable because one person did a start in a castle and the new building essentially blocked everyone from getting out of the HQ and their people died trying to clear that new building because of how big and convoluted it was).
unless they changed it, you can't do half and half in one building. But the best layout I have seen is have a warehouse in the middle with two cookhouses either side of it. And you can continue the same pattern when you need more cookhouses.
@@CharliePryor hopefully that would be possible in the future updates, along side being able to build your own structures such as a greenhouse that you mentioned in your last playthrough
it kinda makes sense though to not do that. because at this point the build of the game lets you build half a structure when you have low materials but desperately need said structure. just a pain to have to have it unusable when you fully implement it. >.> surprisingly (or not) no one actually uses it for that and just clears buildings, metal scraps and trees at the same time in their desperate bid to make it quickly.
It's worth noting that if you want to, say, use your actual house (or where you used to live) as your HQ, you can literally put in the address (Street, House Number, etc.) and the game will literally take you right there and have that location selected as your HQ....though it's possible that it may deem that address as too small for your HQ (this was the case for my old home address in Rotterdam NY, my old home address was deemed "too small", but my neighbor's houses were fine....which I'll admit was a bit annoying, but whatever). This makes it very easy to find a specific location that you have in mind to use as your base, provided you know the address for that location.

aye. there are other youtubers out there who've been playing and restarting their runs many times for the past year. in places like New York it is imperative to use buildings as walls as tearing down a 15 story building takes ages. Better to just use it as a wall that you don't have to worry about because currently the game doesn't have where zeds can clamber out of windows and fall into your protected zone. If the Dev's implemented that it would be both more realistic AND annoying.
@jesseallen3109 if they were smart, they would implement some sort of internal barricade system. Taking materials from upper floors or non load bearing walls and fortifying the outward facing windows on the first floor, basically.

However the game doesn't have that mechanic, which it really should because if the building is 3+ storys tall they could dismantle the third on up floors to make the bottom two be just an oversized wall/pest trap house with the above material. Also by doing that it makes it so the 3 story tall guard tower can now shoot over the 2 story wall (as we've seen they can shoot over 1 and some 2 story houses). The only question then is how would the in game mechanic work for the time to dismantle the third and higher floors into materials and how much of the materials it garners? it wouldn't even have to have the material gathered to the warehouse as it's being immediately used to seal off windows on the lower 2 floors as well as, since we see they can climb buildings, making it so they can't climb onto the new roof that is the third floor and still come toppling into your secure zone.
I missed the last two of the first playthrough, but I feel like the bug out with the weather and the bugout with the meat not getting cooked kind of messed things up out of your control

If you want better pathing you press (shift+click) it will go offroad saving you a ton of gas.

Would love to see you try to beat the game in London's Houses of Parliment, its one of the largest building complexes I've found so far in the game.
Just need it to get a bit more mature and stable, then I’ll try other locations.
Only been playing the demo, but I've started using warehouses as bunkers on the corners of my area. Noticed it cuts down on me running out of ammo.
can you use the long buildings as a wall? or integrate them in the wall, even have infexted hide in them so during the day you go clearing them.
For this play through can you try making a barn and cookhouse in the same building?

I do wonder if you can adapt a building into two functioning structures, like a one building that is half cookhouse half storage for example

I would use the buildings for walls (as well as proper walls). Less materials on your walls and less upkeep.

I missed the last two of the first playthrough, but I feel like the bug out with the weather and the bugout with the meat not getting cooked kind of messed things up out of your control
