I think at this point we're in agreement that Prince could be difficult for lack of a better word. But these sound engineers have the best stories and were the luckiest people to have worked with him. Because they got to see him in his organic state.
Yeah, I'm a huge Prince fan but I want to hear the truth about him. I don't want people to pretend he was an angel if he wasn't. What's the point of that?

Musicians like Prince are a breed apart. What is viewed as being difficult or mean are often because they hear what they want in their head. Trying to communicate what they hear is a very hard thing, almost impossible to do.
Saying shit like, "White people don't have rhythm" isn't just a supposed "genius" being difficult. That's some hateful ignorant bullshit and no amount of talent should ever excuse it. Nor should it excuse people from treating others poorly.

It's so interesting to hear stories about Prince as a person.
Read Duane's book that writes about Peggy's time with P as well during some of the PR sessions (and as Susan Rogers was coming-in). P is my favorite artist - by far. But dude could be mean - hell, he was mean to me in Eastgate Mall when I got his autograph. Yet, one has to go to his story. The man was surrounded by people and extremely lonely. He wanted to be in control because when he wasn't his life showed him that you can be gone at any minute. He abused his status as a boss to control his environment. He realized his mistakes and started making phone calls before he passed (as we know are finding out), but in his younger years, he could be mean. You hear this on the sound checks; you hear Morris, Jesse, and others, but in his heart, he was a good guy. He was human - like we all are.
Oh, I didn't know she was this honest. I gotta watch the whole thing now lol.
He demanded a lot from her,because he respected her,I mean how many top female music engineers are there??.Prince was a mercurial genius,Peggy just tells you as it was,warts n all,we all have a unpleasant side to our character.To be as successful as Prince was,it took discipline and mental toughness..
Exactly he always had these women engineers and he respected them and he was a genius and genius expects a lot and is eccentric.
I bet that whatever was on the Time tape that was lost was Super-COLD and extremely FUNKY. I would have LOVED to have heard it especially with the likes of everything that was on What time is it album like 777-9311, the Walk, and onedayimgonnabesomebody.
I was in the audience LA COLISEUM when he got shit thrown at him. He was way ahead of his time.
My jerk of an ex husband who is 11 years older than me told me many times about when Prince had those early shows when the audience's didn't get it . I grew up on Prince and I could tell back when I was 14 he was special !!!!
It’s was 1981 Stones concert where Jagger hired him to open. I think JGeils and Foghat were there too. His music was good it was just we weren’t quite ready for Prince and his Revolution 🤷🏼♀️

I would imagine someone who is considered a Genius is also eccentric & when things go well it's great, but when things aren't at times they go off actually as we all sometimes since no one is a robot. On International Lover (1st take) ....I know how to keep you wet "Peggy are you listening". Lol. She had her back turned & said all she could do was smile. That was for a laugh & she said he never hit on her, respectful in that sense. He also called her in to work? on her birthday, but when the recording was done, at the door, he said Peggy? He tossed her the cassette, said Happy Birthday & left out. It's her song! I hope it gets released at some point. I'd love to hear it! 💜💜💜

Prince is a phenomenal person - how anyone can be so talented is beyond belief. But in my opinion it is God who gives out who does what.

In the Dr Susan Rogers interview, she expressed how Prince believed his talent came from G-d and he felt not recording his ideas was disrespectful.

Dweezil knows about the music nuances, you can see him as a kid running around his dad's studio plugging ppl in as his dad loved improv jams at home when at the end he invited guest and had some cross genres jams

As a musician myself, the artist ego is a difficult thing to navigate.. show business attracts a very insecure lot which manifests itself in a distinct lack of character.. its every man for themselves unfortunately.. Prince was an immensely talented artist, but clearly just as human as the rest of us..
I didn't have rhythm until i took dance - ballet and modern dance.
It was cute in another part of the interview, she said he got a bed for her to sleep however she was so busy she wasn’t sleeping well

Those drums were "played" by the Linn-LM 1 drum machine (over $5000.00 dollars at the time)
They were said to be a stock pattern programmed for Roger Linn's namesake invention by David Garabaldi of Tower Of Power.
With some modifications by Prince I'm sure.

If you separate the career from the man... it's undeniable the fame and stardom Prince accomplished.He was a proficient musician and had a lot of influence being the soundtrack for people's lives.The man however, wasn't so rosy of a story.Prince took legal custody of a 15 year old fan while having a relationship with her when he was 41.He also did in his movie career the exact same thing Harvey Weinstein is in jail for right now,and people are furious with him for.Not to mention his hopeless opioid addiction that took his life.So what they say about actually meeting your heroes is true.If you actually met Prince, you would have been disappointed

Ah, I see, the one he married! The (inaccurate) version of the story I knew, she lived with her parents until she was 18, and they didn't "become a couple" officially until she was 19 and his dancer!
I was uncomfortable with the age gap and the way he handled the death of their child, but I didn't realize he was pursuing her at a younger age.
I don't think he docked her pay for weight gain while she was pregnant, btw, I don't think they were married yet. i think it was when he saw her eating something "fattening" like whipped cream (which is not only nasty and abusive, it's also preposterously ignorant about calorie content.)
But, while I love a lot of Prince's music, I never thought he would be at all nice to date, and over time this opinion strengthened. I have long believed that he probably had a personality disorder, and there was clear signs in some of his music that, if he was at all like the lyrics he was writing, he would be an emotionally abusive partner who would swing between idealization and devaluation, and would be a clever manipulator.
For example, in the spoken interlude in "get off" he swings between praise, setting up the woman by asking what she would like to eat just so he can brutally cut her down about her weight....but quickly reassuring her that he is attracted to heavier women, and moves right into undressing her without even having the dinner date.
The character he plays in Purple Rain is manipulative and emotionally abusive, but back then it was hard to know what to think, as he was acting and not directly claiming it was autobiographical.
But I think the thing about canceling Prince is....he's **deceased**
Even though our culture is FINALLY listening to women and children claiming abuse by powerful figures in entertainment and sports,
There's just not the same traction with a deceased person who, frankly, never behaved very normally.
Prince's entire schtick was that he was very weird, and his lyrics were hypersexual and full of emotional kink.
Should there be reaction? Yes.
But I feel like the kick back is much more intense if the person is
1. Alive to face retribution
And
2. Presenting a veneer of normalcy

About 40 yrs ago I was walking on Broadway in NYC - around the area of the 50's - and this what appeared to be a black man pushes by me with an attitude you could cut with a knife. And I always thought that was prince. Lots of people of all types become very entitled if they become famous and have no problem being rude.

@@peterroberts7684 I do think it was him, the only problem I had is his height - he looked to be a bit taller than me and I'm 5'8" but he did where platformed shoes. I'm now more sure than ever it was him - remember that was in 1980 - Purple rain didn't come along till 1984 and besides he was wearing regular cloths and no make up - he was just another black kid with unrecognizable features. That was broadway and the upper 40 and 50's and there were many talent agencies in that area. In fact I used to dance at Phil Black's studio over on 50th and Broadway the studio had an open window overlooking Broadway and anyone can see the class from the street.

That Stones concert was a mess. I heard that concert almost broke Prince not financially but mentally. The audience was booing and was throwing bottles. The word around the campfire is that Dez was hit in the head with a bottle and walked off the stage. Not sure if it's true. The rhythm thing I agree his drummer was white and Prince didn't replace him with Morris. And yes I believe rhythm can be taught but a person has to have some kind of intuition. I'm a drummer and I met a lady after a gig and she asked me about her grandson. He's having the hardest time learning to play the drums. He started at 6 and now he's 21 and there has been no improvement. I told her start will children music books and a metronome. This is not a dig at her grandson but the children books really simplify the information. Music books can be real wordy and compacted making it hard to understand sometimes....

well he did get into physical fights and from stories about his childhood he knew how to fight. Some books I've read, people say his jabs were quick and he could fight pretty well. also they probably got used to his antics

I gave it back to my partner like Tina did Ike a couple times. But then there's the Janet Jackson docuseries just out, that shows the argument betwene Janet and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, where she's tired of them laughing at her. Susan Rogers story about tapping her foot reminds me of that now.
Keith Richards said that Prince tried to upstage the Stones on that tour and Prince was the opening act - Keith said that wasn't cool.

LOL. but to be fair that's not as much a "white" thing as a cultural tradition emphasized in black families much more than white families.
Coming from a multicultural, and multiracial family myself, I noticed these things at an early age.
My mother raised me and my siblings in the Black American traditions of our community, my father being 1st generation Italian /Jewish American grew up outside those specific traditions.
In our household, we were submerged and immersed in rhythmic music from the time we woke, through breakfast, lunch, dinner, to bedtime. we listened during chores, and even when completing home studies there was music in the background.
Being able to dance, and keep rhythm is expected among peers in social circles in our community esp. back then.
Most of us can bob our heads and move to a beat before we can successfully walk across a room without falling.
Usually professionals don’t dish on the stars they work with in this way. It sounds like he spent time reaching out to her and treating her like a person. She seems super dismissive and callous about it. But we got juicy deets!
This is crazy that this lady doesnt even acknowledge or know that the controversy album and 1999 were huge successes with massive hits. He already had a huge audience before purple rain and the songs he recorded on controversy and 1999 were bangers. She doesnt seem like a person who had any kind of musical ear especially for pop rock r&b like prince recorded. Its really a shame that prince didnt have an person who liked his music engineering/producing for him. Imagine how much better his songs couldve been. Peggy just wasnt into his vibe at all.

After Prince's death many complaints from people who were close to Prince, but he knew how to make a song or album successful and he had his vision, that's what it is all about in this business. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis seem to be the only ones I ve never heard saying a bad word about Prince, because they learnt from him. I prefer Zappa's Roxy and Elsewhere or Sly's Fresh or Solo Monk etc. Prince is just one of a lot of musicians. Genius? He was not born as genius. His debut For You was a very weak album, but he worked hard and improved. Prince was mean, she says?! He was the boss and a workaholic, so not wasting time on too much small talk or whatever, he did not even say Good morning or hello! I do not care whether he was nice or not, I am just a consumer listening to some music. @@najinelson6742 I'm not getting into some kind of strange conversation about Prince's personality quirks, I'm not a fan at all, I am aVan Halen fan though, not everything she had to say DLR was sunshine &unicorns I though she had plenty of nice things to say about Prince , his work ethic ,etc. My husband loves Prince so we actually listened to the full interview twice ,personally I got so much more than Prince was mean from it ,DLR has lsd but we wouldn't be remembering Eddie if it wasn't for the combination of the original line up of that particular band .Also these talents would not be remembered the same if not for the hard work of the people who helped their sound come together ,in just the right way ,before it hit the airwaves .

I’ve never understood all this Prince fawning and idolization. The guy was all about projecting his insecurities and bullshitting others to believe he was bigger than life. I know of incidents involving staff from music venues who dealt with him and who say that Prince was a total diva asshole.
He wasn’t THAT talented to warrant his level of assholery. There are artists with infinitely more talent that didn’t act or treat others like he did.

The man played 27 instruments, Won 8 grammys, put together a critically acclaimed movie, created multiple acts, wrote for numerous recording artists basically since the beginning of his career, and was a rival of Michael Jackson. He wasn't that talented? Are you stupid? He WAS bigger than life at his peak.
Prince was one of, if not THE greatest musician in his generation. Yes he was brutally rude sometimes and in his early years quite arrogant with all that is implied by the term. But as he grew and worked through the pain of his childhood...as best he could, he regretted much of that and reached out to many to let them know that. Like many infinitely talented artists, he also had a devastating childhood. He was emotionally stunted in the area of relationships of all kinds. It takes a truly mature soul to effectively handle that...and there are not many of them in the music business. Fortunately, a rare few of those closest to him forgave him his faults and despite his issues loved him and his work anyway. Unfortunately many of those around him, especially as he aged in life were users and enablers which while not unusual for those of his wealth and status, ultimately led to his death. I loved him warts and all and still do. Rest well sweet Prince. See you soon.
