    *PRO TIP: install a couple of screws through the Velcro into the board to hold that layer in place. The sticky will not last long on the wood, especially with the heat produced by the equipment. Also, make sure you orient the equipment in a position to allow adequate heat dissipation. The fans on the network switch are going to be blowing directly on to the WAP and the router. Those switches can throw off quite a bit of heat, so may want to rethink the placement of the switch.

      +Rhyno186 why dont they have a "do not try this at home" disclaimer for every video? It seems the majority of things they do obviously should not be performed at home or are not actually well researched/designed enough to be used within 2km of a school. They do some frankly amazing stuff but so many of the actual pro tips I need are from the comments or the forums.

      +Rhyno186 I did a similar thing to this but mounted my networking gear behind my entertainment center and I used velcro with 3M adhesive that is rated up to 200 degrees F, I'm pretty sure if you use the right stuff it won't come loose with the heat from the equipment. I've had mine set up for over a year and none of it has come loose. Just with anything else, use the right stuff and you won't have any issues.

    For heavy items, I suggest 3M Dual Lock Velcro instead of the light-duty soft stuff. Radio Shack used to carry it as "Superlock". You can get large pieces and spools of it online, and it really holds stuff tightly.

    This is one of the best videos I've watched this year. #1 _ Thanks for the tip on using wide Velcro for mounting...a perfect solution. I'll get the board, do the layout like you did, cut it, sand it, and give it a good coat of Gloss Orange. It will be mounted on a wall in my rented spare bedroom that is also my computer/office/storage room. When I vacate this rental there will only be two small holes in the wall, nothing more than standard cosmetic wall damage done if hanging a picture.

    This was a decent video. Although JayzTwoCents did "beat them to it" he went another way, and already had a large part of his hardware wired through electrical piping leading to a small box on his wall. Jay could've done his thing more professionally, but i think Luke pretty much nailed this solution as far as for people who are renting who aren't allowed to completely fuck their walls.

    Tip, lower the clutch setting on your drill/driver when putting in screws. When the arrow points towards the drill icon (4:29) that means the clutch is locked and you risk stripping the screw head and/or over penetrating e.g. your cable clip (4:25).

    This would also work really well for those that have walls where mounting things isn't easily accomplished.
    Almost all the walls in my house are plaster. Trying to get through the plaster is more likely to bring it down I think. I had to repair a few walls when I bought the place as it was. Good thing I had someone there to coach me through it, and another person helping me with the same skill level I had (little to none). All three of us got it done though.

      Buying a house is a huge financial decision and undertaking. It's different for everyone. If you know you're gonna be moving within one or two years, renting will definitely be cheaper then buying a multiple 100 thousand dollar house.
      It's all about everyone's own unique situations, and making statements like that is close-minded and ignorant.

    • @andurilan
      @andurilan 8 років тому +2

      +50LightSabersInAPack In theory. In practice, if the last 10 years have taught us anything is that most people dont really 'own' their home. Most cases when the person finally HAS paid off their home, they almost always remortgage the property to make renovations, school tuition etc. Which works if everyone plays fair.
      When people who have more money than sense tilt the scales against the avg person, you can see your mortgage go from, lets say 2000 a month to 8K. Which before long, no average 9-5er can afford. Property worth then is a scam where the value of the property goes up and up until it topples over. Here in Toronto, the avg house is now around 500k.
      Home ownership is a shell game where the same property has been paid for dozens of times over and scams the families who fall for the rigged game. Like land ownership, its a myth. Meanwhile I save my money for better purposes by renting my house and condo.

    • @50LightSabersInAPack
      @50LightSabersInAPack 8 років тому

      Anduin Arilan Yeah I can kind of see what you're saying. I guess it does depends on one's situation, but also on the country - I'm not from Canada so I don't know what the situation is like there (aside from what has been described in the comments).
      Aside from the mortgage scam, you say you save money for better purposes, but in the long run surely you'd only be spending more? Because if after say ten years you feel like moving, you won't get that money back from the house you previously lived in.
      Plus there's obviously why this video has been uploaded - restrictions. If you rent, you have restrictions on how *you* live. Personally, I'd like to go home to somewhere which is mine, and that I own. If someone told me I couldn't modify where *I* lived to suit my personal preferences, I would pack my bags and leave in a instant.
      Obviously these are just my personal preferences, and not everyone is touchy about these things.

    • @50LightSabersInAPack
      @50LightSabersInAPack 8 років тому

      Hexaguy Of course it is all about the situation of the individual. Your point about moving is pretty much the only pro-rent reason I'd understand, but I don't agree with it. Personally, I'd like to just find somewhere and set up shop there for the foreseeable future (build up my assets, customise my abode etc).

    I have a pre-built pc and I'm going to move all the parts into a different case and I will maybe buy a new motherboard if I have to. So do I need to install windows again to the SSD what I currently have or is it just fine when I buy a new motherboard? And if I have to install the windows again do I uninstall the old one first or does it automaticly uninstall it self when I install the windows again? And do I need to download all the games again on the HDD after I installed the new windows on the SSD?
    I currently have win 10 and I would it again if I have to.

    • @Proximy_

      Not sure but there could be 2 options. 1. Their internet provider needs them to have a router for some reason. 2 The modem doesn't work correctly with the switch

    • @harr1s2011
      @harr1s2011 8 років тому +3

      +Lucas Foster Routers offer more features than just the hardware itself, such as QoS, VPN, Bandwidth Monitoring, better network management and so on.
      (edited here) duh. Forgot the most important reason, the router is required as a NAT between public and private networks.

    • @Jeffers3094
      @Jeffers3094 8 років тому

      I have no clue why the hell he has that router, it doesn't have enough ports and he isn't using its WAP so why not get a better router. I mean he could have got a 10 port ethernet only router instead of a router and a 24 port RACK MOUNT switch.
      Only reason behind that decision I can see is it was just stuff lying around the office.

    • @6zwbob
      @6zwbob 8 років тому +1

      +Lucas Foster That router is technically a multi function device that combines 3 functions; a router, a switch, and a wireless access point. The modem is something different that the router doesn't do, (mo-dem = modulate-demodulate )it change the information from light (fiber) to electrical signals over his Ethernet cable).
      The router is also responsible for separating broadcast domains something a switch doesn't do. It also separates his network from the rest of the internet through network address translation (NAT).
      The only reason he doesn't have an enterprise level router that is only a router is because they are more expensive and do the same thing; the only improvement on enterprise level is the advanced software controls or hardware expansion basically irreverent to a home network.

In my country the internet provider gives you a single box connected to either coaxial or telephone plug at one end and to your tv, your phone, all your ethernet and wifi devices on the other end. Mine even has a bluray and a 500gigs drives

    There should be a video describing various home arrangements for a network, like if you need a switch or a hub, an access point or just a router, and what each of the pieces accomplish and why you would choose them. If that was this video, then I personally would not consider this a waste of time and an act of stalling.

    • @fuadh8101
      @fuadh8101 8 років тому +1

      I don't you think you understand the whole point of this video bro..
      This vid is a DIY video not a video about explaining the stuff that YOU want to know about
      You could go online and find a site which explains that sort of stuff
      You don't need to complain about how it didn't help you at all when the video isn't actually based around those subjects

    • @ParasiteDelta
      @ParasiteDelta 8 років тому

      ***** I do get the point, and my point is that recent videos feel like a gap filler, something to stall while they come up with something new, and that's okay. The problem is when these videos continue for days and nothing interesting or original comes out of them. How to run your wireless setup on a wooden board? Anyone could have come up with that, and plenty have posted guides and videos on it.
      The point is that what I mentioned above would have personally been much more worthwhile and still simplistic for them to explain instead of a 5 minute video on how to drill holes and tack down components. Also, in regards to doing external research, I have done research on networking and know about the things that I have mentioned, but a video about said components and choices would strike a good resemblance to some of their older material and would be more beneficial than this video. Peace.

    The white box at 1:10 is an optical network termination (ONT). I installed them for the ISP in my area for 1.5 years. Not sure if it's the same out west, but when disconnecting/moving services in the Atlantic provinces, the ONT is supposed to be left in place as it is programmed for that house/apartment. It can be re programmed easily enough if you do take it to your next residence, the main concern is someone cutting the fibre line, taking the ONT with them and screwing over the next tenant of that location by leaving them with a cut fibre line.
