  • By turn hilarious and haunting, poet Shane Koyczan puts his finger on the pulse of what it's like to be young and ... different. "To This Day," his spoken-word poem about bullying, captivated millions as a viral video (created, crowd-source style, by 80 animators). Here, he gives a glorious, live reprise with backstory and violin accompaniment by Hannah Epperson.
None of this would be possible without the participation of the following people and organizations:
Animators: Ryan Kothe, Mike Healey, Will Fortanbary, Brian San, Diego De la Rocha, Gizelle Manalo, Adam Plouff, Mike Wolfram, Hyun Min Bae, Oliver Sin, Seth Eckert, Viraj Ajmeri, Vishnu Ganti, Yun Wang, Boris Wilmot, Cameron Spencer, DeAndria Mackey, Matt Choi, Reimo Õun, Samantha Bjalek, Eli Treviño, Ariel Costa, Caleb Coppock, James Mabery, Samir Hamiche, Waref Abu Quba, Deo Mareza and Clara, Josh Parker, Scott Cannon, Thomas McKeen, Kaine Asika, Marcel Krumbiegel, Teresa del Pozo, Eric Paoli Infanzón, Maxwell Hathaway, Rebecca Berdel, Zach Ogilvie, Anand Mistry, Chase Ogden, Dominik Grejc, Gideon Prins, Lucy Chen, Mercedes Testa, Rickard Bengtsson, Stina Seppel, Daniel Göttling, Julio C. Kurokodile, Marilyn Cherenko, Tim Darragh, Jaime Ugarte, Joe Donaldson, Josh Beaton, Margaret Schiefer, Rodrigo Ribeiro, Ryan Kaplan, Yeimi Salazar, Daniel Bartels, Joe Donaldson, Daniel Molina, Sitji Chou, Tong Zhang, Luc Journot, Vincent Bilodeau, Amy Schmitt, Bert Beltran, Daniel Moreno Cordero, Marie Owona, Mateusz Kukla, Sean Procter, Steven Fraser, Aparajita R, Ben Chwirka, Cale Oglesby, Igor Komolov, Markus Magnusson, Remington McElhaney, Tim Howe, Agil Pandri, Jessie Tully, Sander Joon, Kumphol Ponpisute, James Waters, Chris Koelsch, Ronald Rabideau, Alessandro & Manfredi, Andrea López, Howey Mitsakos
Produced by Giant Ant: Leah Nelson, Jorge R. Canedo Estrada, Alicia Katz, for having the bravery to helm such a monumental project.
Brett Wilson, Joni Avram, for their generosity of spirit and tireless support.
Olivia Mennell, Maiya Robbie, Stefan Bienz, Corwin Fox, Aaron Joyce, Christina Zaenker, Melissa Bandura, for creating such a beautiful piece of music and having the patience to explore this art form with me.
Christi Thompson, Jess Sloss, for keeping me organized and making me appear to look like I know what I'm doing.
Loretta Mozart AKA my Grandmother, Sandy Garossino, Nea Reid, bullying.org, for never saying "You can't do that." For always saying "OK... how can I help?"

This poem changed my life in middle school. I was being horrendously bullied and every day on the bus to school I’d put my headphones on and listen to this poem. It helped give me the strength to get through my day.

    • @TXCryptic

I did the same, during home room I’d listen to it on repeat, it gave those of us who were bullied day after day strength, my bullying has stopped but I find myself coming back to this so I don’t forget about what has made me; me. The destination might seem like the best thing ever but the trials and tribulations are what makes us stronger, makes us able to handle all that is thrown at us. You must never give up because if you do then... This fight, no, this war, will always be up hill, our fights might have ended but generations after us, their fights have only just begun, we need to do all we can to help them through it because we had the worst of it, and we survived.

"Despite a loving husband, she doesn't think she's beautiful because of a birthmark that takes up a little less than half her face, kids used to say that she looks like a wrong answer someone tried to erase but couldn't quite get the job done, and they'll NEVER understand that she's raising two kids whose definition of beauty begins with the word "Mom", because they see her heart before her skin. Because she's only ever been amazing" This part really hit me so flipping hard, I've got someone very dear to me that has an incredibly bad self-image because of her appearance, and this just instantly brought me to burst out in tears. She's only ever been amazing, beautifful, fantastic and absolutely stunning and goergous inside and out, mashallah.
    Love this guy's poetry.

I know why they don’t take it seriously, because the relationship between student and teacher is very established and often people don’t like their teachers!
I’m a former drug addict, and the reason I took drugs was because as it turned out I had ADHD, and a couple of other mental problems.
The only reason I got diagnosed by a psychiatrist was because I went into rehab.
I used to do 2 grams of cocaine a day.
When I was prescribed medication for my ADHD, and went to bed that evening, I woke up after 10 hours, and it was like my brain had only performed 50% for 27 years of my life. And after my medication it went to 100%.
And haven’t taken any drugs since and never think about it anymore.
From one day to another my life changed in such an extreme way that I actually got diagnosed with PTSD after 6 months, because my entire reality had changed!
But back to what I do now, I’m a conference speaker and a public speaker that go out to schools that are having problems like the one you are experiencing. Because the schools staff already have a too strong bond and experiences with the students and their are often problems or attitude problems between them.
Then I’ll get hired and the first thing I do is asking all the teachers and Staff to leave auditorium. So instantly I’m getting their attention, and I’ll always address the students on an equal stand I’m not here to demand authority. And talk to them like adults. I usually start by telling my story of addiction and my diagnosis, and my behavior and my story when I had a drug induced psychosis which I can remember every single second of those 18 hours before I was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. It’s scary and insanely hilarious for people to hear about! How I went outside in nothing else than my underwear. Because I thought there were a bomb under my bed, and the police guided me away from the apartment with lasers. And I proceed to just stumble around for like 3 hours, truly believing that everything I see is real!
I was found by a off duty police officer that had just got off work, and he called me by my name which I thought was weird because I didn’t know him. As it turns out my girlfriend had called the police and there were actually around 25 police cars out looking for me because I had just dragged my girlfriend out of the apartment telling her there were a bomb and the police told me we should leave.
Of course nothing of it was real, she got mad and went inside again just brushing it off at me being drunk or something! Well I left. When I had been missing for 1 hour she then called the police.
So yeah it’s a hilarious and truly absurd story.
Because of my brutal honesty about all the stuff I have done the audience starts to realize that I’m not going to judge any of them, no matter how bad it is. Because I’m there to help and people especially teens makes mistakes and behaves really evil sometimes but its always because any Incidents, if its bullying, leaked nude fotos, and so on it quickly escalates out of control to a degree they can’t control. And 98% really regret their behavior but when you are accused of something your mind is already in defensive position. So your brain doubles down and you become mad and that will never solve anything. So I’ll have very new and open relations with the audience that create a atmosphere of understanding and that leads to them to also realize and open up about their behavior and their actions. That they really regret, and really have a high impact on them mentally but its subconscious.
When they talk to me after I’ve done my “class” “Speech” or what you would call it about 2 hours. They are all very tired emotionally because I have put a lot of perspective into the problems and change the way they usually think.
I usually follow up after a couple of days, I would just drop by, nothing planned of course the teacher and school knows when I’m coming because The students think they are going to have that class but usually I just dump in after 5 minutes after the class have started and then I’ll take over the class for the teacher, for about 30 minutes.
And then part of my program agreed by the school when I’m done and they don’t have anything else to ask or tell me. I’ll send them home early from school basically preserving my special relationship with them. And they always react with disbelief and confusion.
Then the teacher comes in and confirming that I’m serious and that they agree so they can start from a fresh beginning the next Monday. And also improve their respect and admiration for their teacher.

"Despite a loving husband she still doesn't think she's beautiful" Is where I started to really feel the emotions in this. "Their definition of beauty starts with the word mom." This is just so amazing and beautiful. He is a great writer. His dream isn't "unrealistic" or "stupid". Whenever I am asked what I want to be when I grow up I say I want to be a professional musician or be in an orchestra. I am always put down even though I have a talent like others that should be noticed. People who play sports can say that they want to be a professional and they are cheered on while the musicians and actors on the open stage are cast aside. The world is more than a black and white image. This man is amazing and helps me understand that my dreams aren't worthless or dumb.

We've been inseparable ever since. Eight 1/2 years later and we will be getting married. It starts somewhere.

I'm sorry you have to go through that crap, but you just have to keep your head held high and remember that those kids who call you names can't see the true beauty of friendship. I never used to have friends, but then I kinda feel in with the wrong crowd when I began to have friends, so I decided to not talk to them. It's not a bad thing not having friends, because anyone who isn't your friend doesn't deserve you have you as one. And you never know, maybe that guy actually likes you as more than a friend. Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will, just remember that.

Honestly I was never bullied I'm 13 but I've seen bullying and I have bullied before and one day at school I bullied a kid to self harm sending him to 1 year of therapy and I cried and still cry everyday I apologized to him but knew what I did could never be solved by words. Honestly I'm crying now thinking about him because he killed himself from bullying 2 weeks ago from some kid. Just please don't bully that is all I'm saying don't bully.

“Kids are gonna laugh at me no matter what” that what I said on my second day of grade 2.. everyone doubted me. No one believed my dream. I wanted to write. I wanted to dive into books to get away from the lies and the names. I just wanted to get away from the kids that left my heart in pain. in art class they used the blood they drew from my broken heart as paint. They wanted my dream to shatter! I stopped eating for days in 4th grade. After that I had found out I had high metabolism. All because they drained the hunger out of my body.

I was born deaf in one ear. When I came to school I would try to use my hair to hide my big bulky hearing aids but they still showed. I started being called "old lady" because apparently only senior citizens wear hearing aids. It still hasn't stopped and by now I have given up hope that people would change. I began to use the term "I hate people" to hide the fact that I hated myself. I have mole on my nose. People would say "Oh what do you have on your nose SNOTFACE" and laugh. They knew it was a mole but wouldn't stop. It still happens and every day I try to pretend I'm sick so I don't have to go to school. I know I'm a defect and my hearing just costs my parents money, I'm not sure if I should show them this video for fear they might take me to a therapist, as therapists that I've been to before have never helped.

+Undertrash Frisk I was born deaf in both ears too. I also had to wear a big hearing aid but mine was a headband. I remember this girl would yank them off and use it as Frisbee. Since I was too small though all I could do was wait till she was finished and watch as my "ears" were being tossed around.

I'm here to listen and help
Ive been at the lower points only to wait there and heal because I didn't pack a parachute
I've seen the peaks of the mountains that would be my happiest but only in photographs
I've put the bullet in my head
I've poured the pills down my throat
      I've drank until I couldn't breathe
But broken bones and bloody noses became the look I wore for years
Regardless of my pain I'm here for you

listen, i may not know you but i know you are beautiful inside and out. stand up for your self and yell it out proudly "I AM BEAUTIFUL AND I AM PROUD OF MY BODY AND MY LOOKS BECAUSE I HAVE HOPE" it might help and if they don't stop, then they don't know the meaning of beauty, they don't see what i see, we were all born differently and thats the best thing about being ourselves. I'm always called "witch" because thats the name i got in high school, i still have that name now and i wear it like a freakin meddle of honour. I'm not saying accept what they say and think your ugly I'm saying be yourself and that you are beautiful no matter what. :)

A couple years ago my English teacher showed this to us in our class. It broke all our hearts. Most of us in that class had been bullied before, at home, at school. It really struck a cord with me. I rewatch this Ted Talk 3 years later and it still makes me cry. Thank you to that Teacher for opening up my eyes to this world we are now given. A world we need to change. Thank you to that speaker who inspired me to speak up against bullying.

And I was held back once which makes it no better. Watch this please. If you've ever been bullied you may be able to relate. And if you've not been bullied, still please watch. It may help you.

+Michael Erdmier Keep on keepin' on, buddy. Just remember that the people that bully and make fun of you aren't happy or normal people. Happy people don't try and tear others down. They do it to bring you down to their level. One day, you'll be successful and your bullies most likely won't be.

Never say things like that, all it does is take your focus. But trying to ignore your feelings doesn’t make them go away. I know that you may have heard this before, but I find that an outlet for your pain will always ease the feeling, I write about every negative thought I have and utilize it to make stories about disturbed individuals who learn to break through their insecurities and negative impulses and make something of themselves.
I take the lessons I learn in my life and put it to paper or text, because if I can share my thoughts, I can only hope that someone will listen and pass it along
