I guess it depends on the usage, the main things I'm getting it for are to be able to play Bluetooth things to it and share that sound with the rest of my sonos system... and for the summer I can have the same music playing in the kitchen, conservatory and garden so when I'm going inside for a drink or making food for the pizza oven the music will always be around, I wouldn't want anything too loud for outside so I'm not annoying the neighbours so this seems perfect for me. If you have a more private space then the move would be better I think. I doubt I would really take the roam anywhere else very often, maybe just hotel rooms so I can Bluetooth music there while I'm getting ready. Also it'll probably be handy taking in the bathroom where you don't need a big sound speaker too that'll just connect straight away. When you mentioned the android users as well Spotify connects to sonos without the sonos app so it's really easy to just pick up and play
I don't know man... I don't think this is a good or fair comparison... I get were you're coming from in term of price, the JBL, for the price, could be a better pick. but i feel like in term of categories the real comparison would be the sonos roam vs the JBL flip 5 since they are around the same size. As we all know size does matter when we're talking about speaker since bigger speakers often offer better/more resonance which make for a bigger range of frequency and often meaning a better sound. That being said The JBL charge 5 is significantly bigger than the Roam. Also the size of the Charge 5 can arguably make it less portable than the roam or the flip 5. That's why I think this is not a good comparison. As for the flip 5 vs the Roam even though the Flip 5 as more bass it also seems to fall flat at high volume just like the Sonos Roam (over 80% volume). That being said, i feel like the roam offer a sound that is a lot more full around 80% volume were we have resonable bass and crisp mids and highs while the JBL speakers have ok mids and highs and try to make up for it with more bass which i found is something we can often see in lower quality headphones and speakers ( not saying this is necessarily the case here). Also i feel like the JBL flip 5, at lower volume, is drowning the mids and highs in bass were the Sonos have a more balanced sound. that being said, at the end of the day i feel like both brands try to reach very different customers. JBL speakers, to me, would be more attractive for younger people, since their product are pretty affordable, or the bass heads since their speakers often include passives radiators which are providing them with a lot a bass. As for the Sonos speakers i think they would attract older people (since price $$) that are looking for good and balanced sound. That's my opinion.
Nice to see a review that just doesn't go for the hype, it's definitely a lot smaller and not as good sound quality as was expecting. One thing you really missed thought the Sonos ecosystem is a massive feature and you can just hotspot your phone for WiFi but I know that is hassles so I get the point. You still have to mention that JBL have problems linking up to, as the new product from JBL don't work with the old ones I have a Xtreme 2 and wanted an Xtreme 3 to go with it but no dice, I am now looking to get another Xtreme 2 that is stupid position to be in. At least most of Sonos speakers from the last 5 to 10 years work with each other.
I bought a Sonos MOVE and while it sounds great, having to use the Sonos app is a deal killer. I want a Bluetooth speaker, not something that needs an app. God only know what data they are syphoning from us and selling.
@@hixnada8278 you can use it as a bluetooth speaker? also Sonos speakers were originally fully app based, that is their primary function. Bluetooth is only secondary to the main WiFi app experience
Regards the price this ain’t a good comparison, you should have compared it to the Marshall Emberton, JBL Flip 5 maybe even the Wonderboom 2, or even the Tribit Maxsound plus or Stormbox, hell put an Anker Soundcore flare 2 in there because these are all small speakers. But in the end we agree, the Roam is overhyped and although its highs and mids are great the bass is off. Normally I really like your videos, but you should not only compare speakers in price, but also size and usage (indoor/outdoor/pool/party etc); this will help people choose the best one for them.
I have the tribit MaxSound and the flip 5. I prefer both to the sonos, especially when considering the price. I can buy 3 tribits for the price of one roam
JBL=Loud, Sonos =forward sounding and detail. He also failed to mention that the Sonos Roam has a selectable feature to adjust its sound output to the space it’s in. The roam is a great speaker, and cost justified. Go listen to the JBL and. Roam and get a clearer picture. This video does not give an accurate sound depiction
Sonos Rome is something to consider if you already have Sonos speaker. That is whole point of it. I like your reviews but you failed to emphasize most important point. Been able to seamlessly integrate in to a Sonos system and allowing for music from the Bluetooth source to be shared with other Sonos speakers is for some Sonos users priceless. If you are in a market for good portable Bluetooth speaker there are definitely much better solutions price and sound wise.
After watching comparisions to Mebaboom 3 and Sonos I definetly staying with JBL Charge 5. Gona buy it today from local Currys shop and use already at work :)

Ues are horrible. Jbls are average. Bose are kinda impressive ( as they have bass compensation for low volumes and a consistent sound signature across all their speakers ). Vifas are benchmark. Also there are budget brands like soundcore and tribit which even outperform JBLs in different categories of speakers. So i hate when kiddies say jbls are the best!
I previously own the Charge 3 but started getting battery issues so decided to upgrade. Saw a lot of videos saying sound is similar to previous generations I totally disagree this charge 5 is an amazing speaker and the bass is ridiculous for the size. I can fill my entire house with music just from this speaker, believe me this one JBL got right.
As a owner of sonos speakers I not think you understand the sonos system enough . I do not own the the roam , I do not know if I will add it to my system or not yet. I will say if your wi-fi is that weak where a sonos speaker gives it problems you need to work on your wi-fi at home. I have 6 sonos speakers and no wi-fi problems.
I have a a bunch of these Bluetooth speakers and picked up a roam because my household is already fairly integrated with Sonos and I was curious. I can honestly say it’s a great speaker for its size but not for its price. Also quite durable; it’s survived some serious drops from a longboard. Really though the only way I could justify purchasing it is if you already have a Sonos system and want to use features like AirPlay. If you just need something that sounds good and can take a beating grab a flip or a charge.
I think it's meant to be an Amazon Echo with a battery. So you can leave it plugged in a room always and use it like you would an Amazon Echo while being able to pick it up and take it to other areas of the house/pool/garden/shower. I don't think it's meant to be a portable bluetooth speaker.
You mentioned that there’s no headphone/aux input on this guy. Have you tested either the Roam or Charge 5 with a USB-C to headphone adapter? Wondering if that’ll work
I like the use of JBL for comparison. Do you have any recommendations of a good speaker similar to Charge 5 with Bluetooth/wireless and powered from wall outlet?

Fair enough review, but you didn't even hit on the main benefits of this speaker. The selling point is not ONLY the portable speaker aspect but the ability to connect to existing Sonos systems. Bad review for not even mentioning this strong point. Having a Sonos system already in my house, this provides the ability to extend the linked sound system to the back patio or other rooms while being portable. This is something NONE of the other speakers you mentioned can do and something that adds to the price point.
Thanks for the honest review! I did not like having to sign in and create an account with Sonos but the worst part for me is the power button being used for everything, it is hard to press and not intuitive to turn off/on and access the bluetooth on it. Best Buy DOES stock the Sonos Roam. That is where I got mine, and I just checked their website and it is still available. I have owned the JBL and the Roam, and much prefer the Roam. Yes the price is high, but the sound quality is awesome-far better than the JBL, in my opinion, Yes, I had one-time problems with the app, wifi setup, and don’t like the power button. But in addition to the superior sound quality of the Sonos, the battery in the JBL has been a constant problem-having been returned to JBL 3 times for repair. JBL also does not offer the Sonos wifi music choice, which carries a host of benefits.
