Aber Falls & Carneddau Mountains Hike: Foel Fras, Llwytmor & Y Drum, North Wales Walk

- This epically stunning 12 mile hike started in the beautiful, historical village of Abergwyngregyn, plenty of free parking in a carpark on the outskirts (LL33 OLD) or park for a charge closer to Aber Falls. The walk from here is easy going, suitable for most abilities, there are also stop-offs with information about the area, the ecology and its' rich history, an awesome touch and we very much appreciated it.
The 120ft fall's thunder can be heard from quite a distance, which just adds to the fun. It is a real natural wonder, the water rushes off the igneous rock slamming into the pool below and throwing a massive amount of spray into the air, dramatic! We spent some time here, just enjoying the atmosphere before we headed off into the mountains.
We pretty much followed the waterfall up the mountain until we met the Afon Rhaiadr Fawr, the river that feeds the falls. The path was not clear and the river in spate after all the recent rain so it was hard going in some areas and extremely slippery, not for the faint hearted, but so, so stunning. Behind us we could see out over the Menai Strait and Irish Sea, and the river was so alive with movement. The weather turned bad a few times during our way up our first mountain, Llwytmor (849m), but not too bad to turn home, although it did make finding a safe path up a bit more difficult, this is an exposed area which is not heavily used by walkers. Reaching our first peak was lovely, the views were tremendous and after the relentless up, we were in need of a tea break!
Next, we headed over to the high point of the day, Foel Fras (942m), this took a lot of down to go back up again and we had to walk through the Swamp of Mordor, the Dead Marshes, to get there but we love a trig point so we were happy as Larry😀
We followed a dry stone wall and stepping stones over to our last mountain in the Carneddau Mountain Range, Y Drum (770m), an absolute beauty, such unusual views from here, looking straight over Anglesey and Puffin Island. The sun was starting to set and we had a few miles to get through back to the car, so we decided to take the very distinct Roman Road home.
We had the best time, hardly saw a soul after leaving Aber Falls, a great place to feel free and reconnect. Aber Falls is just so special, and easy to reach, we would recommend it as a fantastic day out, get there and fall in love! Get it.....Fall?!

The waterfall reminded me of a fantasy movie and I can easily imagine it being used as a setting in GOT - The return of winter:) As always you cheer up my day with lovely adventure in the "wild"; so now I can start the mundane office work with a smile on my face and a longing for the open landscapes in the west! Better than the dark winter here;)

Sure is a beautiful start to the day! Looming clouds in the distance....hmmm. You're making me miss the colour green! Magnificent falls for sure! I get the hurry feeling bit...it is like a set of falls is magnetically drawing one in! Getting difficult on the scree for sure! Tea and sandwiches sounds good to me. Oh no I had like 2 paragraphs of a comment typed out and UA-cam ate my comment. Whaaahhhh! That trail along the waterfall all the way up was so incredibly scenic at every turn. I loved Ceri when you said Alan's name with your British accent because when I say it out loud with my southern draw it sounds totally different. I see a summer trek back out here so you both can try out that plunge pool with the waterfall.
You guys were really working hard climbing on this one. So happy you had a view up from the top and there was a bit of blue sky popping through. Your rosy cheeks Kat really speak to how chilly it was up there. And the sun even peaked out for you. What a trek guys! Would definitely like to return and explore more in the summer, was a bit of a "race" against the clock with daylight fading so fast. The wind and cold wS off the charts too, good spot of Kats glowing cheeky cheeks 🥶

Great to have you back, Kat (not the Ceri didn't do a good job last episode!). That was a neat little diorama at the beginning, in a cool little shack. The Aber Falls were beautiful. I'm with you, Ceri, I love my sealskinz socks! The views from the top were amazing. The sky was incredible, along with the vistas over the landscape, with the sea in the distance. More wonderful waterfalls. I don't really know this area so it's new to me. It looked like one of the toughest climbs yet with the scree and risky pathways along the river walk. A very interesting area very well filmed, it must have been difficult in those conditions. Loved seeing the return of the colourful hat. Very daring, well done, can't wait to see the next one xx

On my doorstep. Had the knee op last Saturday so it shouldn’t be long before I am back and able to get out walking again. 27 minutes of video though :o( Still, I am invalided at the moment so why not. Aber Falls has gone through some changes over the years (not the waterfall itself) and parking has been a terrible issue (charges etc.) The other falls you mentioned has a mine adit close by ;) The path at 7:26 to 7:40 is much worse than it appeared on your film - gives me the willies. Don’t eat the bilberries, they are covered in sheep piss. The last time we attempted Foel Fras we took a different route but the weather was so bad we turned back (there is a video of it somewhere). The road you came down on was something to do with WW2 and some secret something or other (I can’t remember what but it will be googlable). As a matter of interest, where did you stay? Great film as always - but 27 mins :o( I have never managed to stay out that long without a PK attempt. 8D

sorry for the length of this one, I tried so hard to cut it down and trim bits out, I left out a bit about Llywelyn and the history 😅 ❤🏴 and I trimmed so many bits the cutting room floor looked like the end of a GVW!
We can absolutely imagine this area getting so busy at peak times and holidays, would be best avoided I guess for large chunks of the year. Would and will definitely revisit, would have loved to have had more time to explore, this was a hit n run, we drove up that morning and set off that night too (we ended up car camping and driving home early the next morning) nice and steady 👍
I can imagine many a secret in this hills, the llyn we spied on the way down looked like itt had been used for diving and such with the waybit was set up.

Great to see Kat back and great to be back at Aber Falls, a place I have seen numerous times but never visited before. Love the sound of a free car park and nice to see an unvandalized display in that small building. The falls were amazing, especially the closer and closer you get, what an stunning sight it is. The scree assent was no the best, nor was the boulders and wet rocks either but great to see flapjacks making another appearance and yes, I was eating my heart out lol. they sounded amazing! I did make it to the top by I had a chocolate Santa Clause instead of a cup of tea! Great views and amazing moody skies which I always love and when you hot the highest point of the day, it's always nice to be welcomed by a nice trip point or kern, almost as good as a good stone shelter in high winds. Good to see you got down safely and not ended up in Rome and a real good 12.4 mile walk - I do not know what metres are lol! Cheers Alan
Lol thanks Alan, what a fab comment! Yes Aber Falls often features on YT, and the village and displays were awesome. There was another in the main village, but I had to cut from the final video for duration reasons. Lol love the start im a nerd,love the little village near the free car park.Love the artwork,in the little hut,with the 3d map,such a lovely display ,simply lovely.stunning waterfall,37 metres wow,i would so love to sit on the rocks there and soak it all up,sublime.And the weather is my fav,love the photo montarge.ditto on autumn my fav season=less people.i love puffins ever since read enid blyton books with huffin@puffin in,i hope to go to lundy island next april to see the puffins hopefully.This weather is just what i love,well done you 2,love the fact like me ,you just get on with it ,and never let the weather put you off.Dont know why but when people get there kit off into plunge pools,they get loads of hits,my daughter goes dive in mummy,think of youtube,and i turn and tell her to get stuffed! lol.Waves at portmeirion,i think this weather is perfect for this type of walk,hubby argues sunlight going,but for me this is ace"gets my glad to be a nerd tshirt".When you was doing the truce,thought was going to do spock hands then!.Let someone know were you are? er deb here"were are you" im lost? lol.but for normal people very good advice.You both know were your going,its something i am working on lol.Loved the ponies,this and boyz have cheered me up so much today,hopefully by friday i be better.Big hug@stay safe debs xxx

Wonderful hike guys, very impressive and it certainly looked very tiring. The waterfall at the beginning looked very lovely, as was the stream on your way up. Views were spectacular. I liked the little Bronze Age circle you passed 😊😉

Spectacular, had to watch it twice just to take it all in. Great waterfall and loved the ancient causeway. Some tricky ledges here and there, well done getting past them. I see it was so windy the dead at tried to get in on the vid. Pretty gruelling but really worthwhile, some great wilderness and terrific views as the clouds lifted. This is definitely on the favourites list😃👍
