I have my own restored 1990s vintage XC bike...Dean Ti with all sorts of 1990s goodies one would have expected on a Dentist Bike of that era. Great video.
Jason McRoy R.I.P you legend i was around 11 Dirt came out and that changed my life .........over here in the Uk they hold there value, a good S-works M2 from the mid 90's will run you around £500
I have that exact same frame Rode it for 13 years (incl rohloff configuration) Now it can rest on my shop wall… Question, why do you call it a dentist bike?
My first thought! Dentist bike… nah… that’s a McRoy bike… couldn’t mean anything else to me. Had his signed picture, A1 size, on my wall when he died. Was an awful day in my childhood
I had a m2 team. It was the best riding bike I've owned. It came with the titanium specialized stem, which I found not so good. Also the brake arch on the fsx are very prone to cracking. Keep the arch off the xc just in case. I love the builds😊
That xtr derailleur might be the rapid rise version. The 97 S Works came with a 4 bolt strong arm crank set and had XTR hubs on mavic 221 rims. I do believe it was offered in two spec levels, the lower of which had the Manitou, and the higher with Judy SL (which was air, versus the coil spring manitou). Judy SL was the predecessor to the SID, which debuted in 99. I'm pulling that from memory, though. Back then, there were multiple versions of bikes with S-Works printed, the team versions and the factory versions.
So fun to see this, i run the ‘98 pro version. Mine uses a “rond” headset which is less high then the chris king headset. It’s an EU spec tho and uses the same Manitou sx fork. Your specialized crankset is the correct one for this bike. Mine only has the xtr rear derailleur, the rest is xt. Wheels are Mavic 222 rims with specialized hubs, the front wheel is radial laced. The Ritchey seatpost is correct, the original bike uses a 13cm stem and 520mm handlebars which are also from Ritchey.
I had a few of these back in the day, a couple still in my collection and featured on my channel. Wasn't a dentist, just a kid that worked in bike shops! My '99 S-Works looked very similar except by then M2 had given way to M4, and in the UK my equivalent carbon fork choice was a Pace. That bike took a beating and still runs today. Interestingly even the stock build didn't have full XTR. For some reason there was a mix of XT in there, and the crankset was a Specialized own brand, as were the hubs (S-Works badge engineered DT Hugi). Seatpost and stem were Ritchey on the 99 and Thomson on the '02.
Lovely build, dream bike territory. I agree - the XT cranks don’t do it justice, otherwise very nice though. We should all take a minute to appreciate the times we live in. Your average person can now afford those 90’s bikes which were very much out of reach when they were new. And the kicker is - they still look and ride as good as they ever did. Keep ‘em coming Mr Shovel.. 👌
Love the old Stumpjumpers. I still have my 99 M2 in Silver, a few upgrades over the years and it's my work commuter now. I should think about restoring it with my vintage parts and rebuild that old red Manitou that came on it.
Nice to see old bikes brought back to life. The only thing I would have done different… A dentist bike should have a Thompson Masterpiece stem and seatpost.
Very nice build. You have a problem though. Eventually you'll need a bigger bike shop if you keep adding more bikes to the collection. I love the dentist bike thing lol. One day I'll be in the market for a new bike and my kid tells me two of the bikes I'm looking at, pivot and Santa Cruz are dentist bikes. Hope you guys have a great race season ahead. This is my kid last season riding nica. I don't know who's more sad, him or me. I love being at the races and watching the kids ride. It's exciting and peaceful.
WD-40 even in the same room as those old elastomers…..gotta keep all petroleum based solvents far away and reassemble with only 100% silicone grease. Hope the elastomers survive. That’s a beautiful bike. Definitely needs a M950 crankset and some Team bars.
The shim for the stem is likely a Specialized stem adjustment shim. These were pretty common with S in the 90’s - 00’s. Rotating the shim allows for about 2-3 degrees worth of adjustability. My Allez and both Stumpjumpers from this era had them. Even my 2015 Roubaix has one.
It wasn’t a shim. The steer tube on the fork was too long and it has an extra pice of steer tube on top to make it long enough for the stem, the only thing really holding it on was the stem cap bolt which was extra long. Totally sketchy.
Schon gemacht 👌.
Nice looking ride at the end. Although I was surprised by the apparent lack of grease on pedal threads, RD bolt, seat post (debate able with a QR clamp). Is that your preference or did I miss something
разве что ввсегда корёбит, что он не обслуживает нормально илки, протерёт покрасит и типа заебись, не надо ведь резинки тридцати летние менять зачееем, ну хотя бы разобрать и почистить )
I to have a need for 90s hardtail Can't explain why my fully loaded carbon enduro bike is way more capable but I will never miss it as much as my old giant team hardtail in yellow and blue
The judy FSX brace will crack using V brakes. They was notorious for it. Theres a guy on ebay who makes a slightly thicker one. Definitely worth buying one . I did
I don't remember lock on grips being a thing in the late 90s. Also, a friend of mine had one of these at the time and he was the manager of the local bike shop, not a dentist 😉 Edit: It might have been a year or two later than '97 as he was running the original RockShox SID (he bought it frame only so custom spec).
Very nice restoration :). I agree that XTR cranks would be better, but the worst is this cheap Chinese handlebar. Some old silver one, would be more suitable.
This is my favorite frame of all time and I recently rebuilt one myself. I was stoked when I saw that you posted this video and overall, awesome job sir. That being said..... that handlebar is awful. Too wide and a 14.99 Chinese Amazon special...What gives???
Wow, I own a dentist bike? Mine is a 15.5” and still going strong!! I am the original owner of my S-works. Surprised you did not keep the manitou on, it works well. Should have been the magnesium one.
sir can i ask as to where did get those shimano xtr v brakes , i am also trying to restore my 90s mtb the only missing piece is a xtr v brake , please help me , thanks
not sure what the real name for those brake lever/shifters are but down in Australia we call them brifters. is this a universal thing or just some weird aussie slang?
@@oldshovel Looks like I'm going to be picking it up from the guy for $125. It's in pretty decent condition, but needs a little love. It's a 19 inch frame, and I'm 6'4", so if you have any good ideas on making the reach a little more comfortable, let me know. I asked the guy if there were any cool stories behind the bike and he mentioned that a long time ago he used to work for Chris King components in Shasta, California, and the front shock that's on this bike was donated to him by Chris King himself.
Gee, I’ve been riding since 1989 yet I hadn’t heard the term “dentist bike” before. That’s strange since I happen to be a dentist. And I probably have a frame like that in my stable of unbuilt bikes too. 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤣
I saw you use those bucklos crb bar last time and now again, are they legit? I know some of their parts are ok, and some arent... Nice dentist bike tho !
everything is super, except for the fork, isn’t it worth at least sorting out, cleaning and lubricating a 25 year old fork? And ideally, install new oil seals, clean the foam rings and soak them in oil?
Nice build just don't know why you left that clunky looking bridge on the fork when you didn't use center pull breaks. Other than that in not a dentist but I approve.
This one ons definitively not a dentists bike. Too cheap. It would have been a Klein Attitude or Adroit. I really like your choice of fork. I put one of these onto my SWorks fsr. And I was able to swap all the innards of the fork to the ˋ99 Hydracoil system. I don't like elastomeres. And the original dampening cartridges are a pain and don't work too well with steel springs.
Dentistry in cycling was definitely a thing back in the early and mid 90s. I worked in a bike shop in Memphis in 1995. Two "friends of the shop" who always hangs out there were dentists. I remembered one had a very decked out Boulder Starship with Paul derailers.
90s XC racing was the best era in mountain biking.
Great build, beautiful scenes on the trails, so peaceful. Thank you

Dean Ti bikes in the 90’s were totally dentists bikes 🙌🙌
I have a 90's Specialized Hardrock that looks a lot like this bike. You inspired me to restore it.
Love it!! So nice, I also love that 90's era. The ride scene is absolutely beautiful!

@@Bouwentjes the cost of the original bike when it first came out, only dentist earned that kind of money to buy one

The old XTR rear derailleur design trickled down so hard it that it looks like the latest Alivio and Acera rd. Amazing.
But unlike those, the 950 XTR stuff works forever and doesn't break and or wear out after 2 and a half miles.
Love the old specialized’s had a few , great build and scenery

I put some oury grips on my xc bike and now know why you seem to use them on every build..they are no question the best grips ever

That Judy with Carbon lowers was made in '95, they got rid of bolt on arches in 96.
Well, Marzocchi used them until around 98, 99.
Nice build. I have a 98 stumpjumper as my daily/only bike. It gets lots of comments on the trails.

Excuse my ignorance, but What’s a Dentist Bike?
It's bike slang for expensive bike (dentist make a lot and are supposed to ride average but with best in class bikes or so goes the legend)
Yeah I didn't know that either 😂😂
"Dentists are doctors that failed out of medical school".
Dentist here, and yes I own two S-Works 🤷♂️🤣 (and MANY other bikes).
Awesome 🙌
You should get an Independent Fabrications
Very nice restoration :). I agree that XTR cranks would be better, but the worst is this cheap Chinese handlebar. Some old silver one, would be more suitable.
Alt bars would be better and best of all they are not period correct😂
What really got me was the width. I didn’t realize I’d spot the anachronism

I'm okay with the width but I'd much rather see a decent aluminum bar that this bucklos. Over all the bike is awesome.
Please get a period correct specialized handle bar. Enjoyed the build though.

Nice!!
Restaurada bicicleta 🚲😉
I can now afford one of those LOL. Did you put a chainstay protector back on it?
Lol right. And the chainstay protector will likely go back on soon. It was just so pretty underneath. 😁
What size for the tire??? I save problem to choose tire...
What was up with the wonky front wheel?
Didnt the M2 Team only come as frame, fork, stem, seat tube, bottom bracket and hanger and you had to add your parts?
I remember that ad in Mountain Bike Action.
I am at 1min when he says he will make the bike a proper 90s dentist bikes, so full xtr, cross max 1st gen, sele italia seat?
sir can i ask as to where did get those shimano xtr v brakes , i am also trying to restore my 90s mtb the only missing piece is a xtr v brake , please help me , thanks
Would have looked better with the Spesh crankset. I have one on my commuter bike and they look great

Que hermosa grabación la tuya amigo y eso que ni siquiera usas el formato 60p

I thought the FSX was a rebadged Mag?
