A trick I used to use when putting on grips, I sprayed hair spray into the grips. They slid on easily when wet and held tight when the hairspray dried.
Regardless of how important (or not) the weight is, what we should be concerned about is that the bike rides well, and that we think it looks nice, if not stylish. And that Specialized looks VERY stylish. Bravo !
I personally like it when the seatpost, stem, and handlebar matches color (all polished or all black), but that's just me. Currently my bikes' do not have matching sets and it's bothering me a little. Also, that FSX fork could be matched with a Specialized ti stem if you can find one. The downside of the ti stem is that it's skinnier than this aluminum stem, and may throw off the looks a bit. On a side note, I once saw a green Cannondale road bike, the frame and fork were green, everything else was black. And when leaning on a black background, it looked like the frame and fork were floating in midair. Was very cool.
I love your idea to “Specialize” your S-works bike and contrast the red frame with black components. The bike is looking really sharp! I am also updating a 1998 red s-works that came stock except for the fork, pedals, and seat collar. I someday plan to get the stock manitou sx ti and specialized seat collar at a good price using a lot of patience. I changed the pedals to the red version of the Specialized pedals. They have titanium spindles and are about 50 grams lighter than the Specialized pedals with the stainless steel pedals. FYI, Specialized also made the titanium spindle in the black pedals. The titanium spindles have a gray sleeve next to the spindle and the stainless steel has a black sleeve. I love these old pedals because they take standard Shimano SPD cleats. I don’t think I will get the stock pedals. The stock pedals are the ubiquitous vintage Ritchey black pedals but they have special Ritchey cleats. All my mountain bikes have SPD cleats and I don’t want to have special shoes with Ritchey cleats to ride the Stumpjumper.
Cranks are at 180°. That's a beautiful bike! Could you please add metric measures (weights, for example) in your next videos, for viewers outside USA? Thanks.
I like the changes, having owned a 93 S-Works M2 as my first good MTB. Mine was black cherry with a whole catalog of silver RIngle parts and some red accents. I'd do a black stem for sure and get rid of the ugly red saddle. :)
The fork brace will crack with V brakes. It was a big problem with the carbon Judy's. There's a guy on ebay in the US that remakes them but a bit thicker
More black items as you said, will make this spezialized even more spezialized. But there is not need to buy new parts, use what you 've got. Thats why i like your video's. As time goes by You may chance step by step so we can see it next year.
Nice bike either way. Bit a retro grouch, I'm leaning more toward polished alloy these days since most stuff is shiny black (nothing wrong with that). I also like carbon, which doesn't come in shiny, lol, but like the light weight it offers.
Where did you find those grips?! I need a few pairs for my builds. Bike looks lovely, agree with the stem, black saddle and fork boots perhaps. love it though, rest that knee and look forward to some pictures of it in the wild
Actually I liked the previous setup in polished aluminum color which made the bike more vintage. Now the cranks and the seatpost don't match the stem and handlebar. If anything I would search for specialized components in this aluminum color for sort of period correctness and nice vintage look. Nowdays evrything is black powder coated and you don't see polished alu stuff much.
There is a bottle cage that trek makes which is nearly identical to your bike color. I just put one on mine as my old aluminum one just gave up on life.
since i discovered grips with scre on - im never changing back, they are the only ones that should exists. Also since you were doing an upgrade - why not switch to sram or shimano hollow tech?
I’m trying to remove the black paint from my hollowtech cranks without making the aluminum super dull oven cleaner did nothing what would you recommend without turning the crank arms gray?
Just Gave away an S-Works for Way too cheap imo..'97 team frame . full XTR.. Ti sx fork..and other little bits.. 3k turned into $500 What a deal. Sickening.
That's actually how much top of the line 90s MTBs are going for nowadays, assuming you can find a complete one in good condition. So if you can find an XTR Cannondale/GT/Trek/Specialized/Marin/Klein, snatch it! And if you have one, don't sell it!
@@hunterchen9 If I could have bought it from my Nieghbor for the groupo I would have.. Low Low hours Mint.. 13" frame though... Offered $600..then came back at $500 30 mins later...thwn went to 450..= Nope.. Anyway yes, a good time to Buy..Voodoo Nzumbi Anyone? Lol.

Speedy recovery for the knee!
Awesome red specialized. Indeed, needs stem+bottle holder black.
As many bikes as I've seen you put them on, I can't believe you actually took Oury grips OFF a bike!😂

Thank you for saving my Sunday🙌🏻🤩
Lovely bike... looks like the one Jason McRoy used to ride back in the day!

Looks great 👍 get well soon.
Looked nicer with silver parts to me.
Thank you, and good knee recovery!!
Cool as always, it's a beauty!
i think it looks way nicer. thanks for the video.
Ouch! Heal well,Rob! I have an '01 Stumpy Pro that I "UN-Specialized". 🤣
I have the same one with an STM fork . It was my father's mountain bike ❤
Get well soon!
I love to stick to the branding, no matter what people say. Specialized is one that I can wear proudly ⚡️
Cranks are at 180°.
That's a beautiful bike!

Love this bike.

If you had a Black Cherry S-works overhere, you were THE dude. Those were rare even at the time they were in production.
Good decision!
Finally you may choose a Specialized Saddle and Stem from that period.. 🎉
(not sure about seatpost-age, you just put on)
I have 2 pair of those specialized pedals, except with the gold titanium spindle, for my '94 s-works
The fork brace will crack with V brakes. It was a big problem with the carbon Judy's. There's a guy on ebay in the US that remakes them but a bit thicker
I liked the red grips, and a black stem and headset would pull it all together. Looks awesome though!
From Specialized to Specialized'er 😎 i think it needs a Specialized cockpit + Specialized tires. 😊🔥 Anyways, Nice bike and get well soon.
The different red of the Oury grips was driving me nuts. The tan S-works grips are much better. Now, let's talk about that seat. ;)
A good start. It needs Specalized tires, stem, and handlebar in black. And yes, the bottle cage needs to be black. The grips look weird though.
More black items as you said, will make this spezialized even more spezialized.
But there is not need to buy new parts, use what you 've got. Thats why i like your video's.

You need some umma-gumma tyres for that lovely bike!

Instantly! A bit faster! 😉
I'd keep that XT crank🤘🤘😁
take care, old shovel...

It's a NICE! not SUPER NICE yet. 😁 Definitely would replace handlebar and "wolf tooth" seat post clamp doesn't belong in that era I think.
If I had any editing skills I'd download this video and re-do the grips section with me playing the sounds on my trumpet.
lol 😂
You made it special...Specialized😜
Lose the chinesium handlebars and that will be an epic bike! Hope the knee heals well and fast. Thanks for the great videos.
I prefer the more specialized Specialized! 🙂
still room for more specialized. 2 tubes 2 tires, saddle, handlebar 😀
Needs some Specialized tyres now man.

Maybe swapping the sworks rings for the xt ones you lighten the hole a bit more

Love theese oldies too. But looks like you have two issues. A way too wide handlebar (not specific of that era), and a little short chain.
90 degrees between crank arms is not ideal (7:14)
lol I know I caught that after I posted too. Total brain slip, meant 180 😁🙌
Yes, a black stem is needed

I have the later rasta Chris King headset, is that the NoThread Headset?
I can see it is at the end there, sweet. I hope that knee heels well for you.
show de bola.
could do with tan sidewalls once those wear ou
