    2024 update ☺ I've recently become a tutor on Preply! If you have specific technical issues you're trying to work through in class or need help with audition season--regardless of age or experience--I'd be happy to hear from you! preply.com/en/tutor/4758453 😇

    I'm starting ballet again after 5 years! I quit at 15 and now at 20 I decided to start again. I feel so embarrassed most of the time in class since I'm the oldest and my muscles and technique have gone all over the place but I know with time and effort I'll get better! Thanks for the video :)

    • @jeanettekakareka

      Don't be embarrassed, you should be proud to do good things for yourself--like taking a class you want to take, or buying a beauty face mask, whatever it is--because at least for me, it's easy to neglect my wants and make excuses. I'm glad you're trying to come back and good luck!

      @@kiyoo2169 everyone is unique and under very specific circumstances, but adding the joy of ballet into your life is always a good thing if it makes you happy! I don't know if you have any past experience in dance or not. But no matter your age, do something as long as it is a positive in your life. Don't put too much expectation on yourself and don't compare yourself to others. I wish you luck!

    For anyone reading the comments that thinks they are starting ‘too late’, I say ‘WHAT SILLINESS’ . In our class I am the YOUNGEST and by far the least experienced. You should see the flexibility and professionalism of the ladies I dance with. We are led by an ex Royal Ballet dancer, who, in her 70s, dances circles around most 🌸 PLEASE NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAM BECAUSE OF SOMETHING AS SILLY AS A NUMBER ❤️

      That's the sweetest reminder ever!!! Im currently 15, and I wanna start ballet, but we're not financially stable, so I'm not allowed to try it out. I do a lot of stretches to improve my flexibility tho and I do a lot of strength training as well. I hope I can start when I'm a bit older and financially independent so I can easily pay to go to classes. I wanna do ballet for fun, I don't wanna go professional, so I don't think I would be sad if I start a bit later than I wanted. Thanks again for this reminder❤❤❤

    As an adult returning to ballet after 20+ yrs, I had lost most of my flexibility. I've started doing only active stretches every other day and, wow, does that help! I think I could turn those arabesque stretches into active stretches. 'Cause my arabesque is leaving a lot to be desired.

    • @jeanettekakareka
      @jeanettekakareka  4 роки тому +6

      You definitely can make them active! I'd try engaging those back/butt/and leg muscles on and off to slowly gain confidence and strength. Maybe I could think about an arabesque strength video for the future. :-) Of course, gaining strength in flexibility is *vital* to making use of one's flexibility!

      As a professional, "splits" and similar big stretches are just a part of the daily things I do, it's probably a grand total of 5 or 10 minutes 😆 Because it's more about maintaining flexibility and feeling good in my body for the day, not getting further flexible. But when I was young and hadn't achieved flexibility yet, I spent a significant more amount of time on it! Just like anything 🙂 I spend more time doing yoga stretches because it benefits me more as a mature athlete.

      "A la seconde" is also known as "second position", it's just the correct ballet (French) terminology. It's when the leg is at your side as you see in the demo. Except I kept the knee bent just as a stretch. A proper "a la seconde" or "second position" is with the leg fully stretched and up at the side. Hope that helps!

    • @jeanettekakareka
      @jeanettekakareka  8 місяців тому

      I think that's really dependent on the person and their body. I would never stay in a stretch if I am getting that gut feeling that I need to stop. There's a certain amount that feels difficult but a little good. And then when you hold a stretch so long it feels wrong is when you should stop. Does that make sense?
      Also I'm not sure I'd want to think of it in "pressure" rather than "resistance" and I would keep that light in the beginning and then push myself further as weeks go on. But I wouldn't make large differences day to day.
      Hope that helps but it requires a lot of self awareness mostly!

    Hi! I want to start ballet as a beginner I am 14 and I Will be 15 on November i want to be flexible and do splits can you give me some advice? Do you think it’s too late at this age to be a pro at ballet? Personally everyone and when I say everyone it’s included my parents too they think it’s too late and they are not pleased and happy but I really want to do for a year now it’s not just some inspiration or from the aesthetic I really want to do! Also how much time do I should take class every week? Thanks!

    • @jeanettekakareka
      @jeanettekakareka  3 місяці тому

      Hi! To be completely honest with you, it would depend on a few things at this age:
      1) already having a lot of natural "facility" and ability
      2) getting into very serious pre-professional classes or with a professional coach straight away
      3) determination and natural ability to take on corrections quickly
      4) luck
      It's true that it is late to start at nearly 15 years old with the goal to become a true professional ballet dancer, but if you're able to jump straight in to the deep end and swim, you could beat the odds! Or, maybe you'll find that ballet-ballet isn't for you but it leads you to another wonderful career path or lifetime passion that you wouldn't have found if it weren't for ballet!
      I hope you can find a compromise with your parents, because serious ballet training is a large financial commitment. Since you're starting so late it's not likely that you'll be able to take advantage of scholarships at this stage. That's why it's important your parents are on board.
      Best of luck to you!

      Honestly, so much is genetics. But you can definitely improve if you try specifically to improve your flexibility a little bit every day! Ballet alone might make someone naturally stiff even stiffer due to the muscles involved.

    • @jeanettekakareka
      @jeanettekakareka  3 роки тому +4

      So long as you say it's mild and your doctor hasn't told you to stop physical activity, I think ballet would actually help! I have very very mild scoliosis as well. But, my mother's was really severe, which is actually why she put me in baby ballet when I was 3 to hopefully strengthen my spine and not have the same problems as her. I don't know if it worked, but it can't hurt! And at 20 you're not done growing either. 😊

    Hey! Just started pointe (would of taken it sooner but stayed in a lower class for a few years) I’m quite flexible as I can do the splits (right and left) and close to middles but I can never seem to get my leg in a hold at the side or just in general. Any tips for that and for starting off in pointe? ❤️❤️ subscribed because these tips were awesome and hoping to be a professional someday ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    • @jeanettekakareka
      @jeanettekakareka  2 роки тому +1

      I would focus on holding the leg at an angle that allows your hips to be more or less level. Use one hand to manually hold the leg within your natural turn out, so that you can focus on testing your strength coming from the butt, inner thigh muscle, and even your back muscles. Hopefully this will get you some strength in the right way over time. 🙏

      It's a good question! If it's more stationary kind of stretching, doing a full barre beforehand is definitely advised. But if you're doing smaller, active stretches you can start that in the morning. I have a 6 minute stretch that I uploaded that shows smaller, active stretches. 🤗
