  • there is nothing more fun than harvesting the leeks at the end of the
year. Massive, odd looking, and very delicious. There is something to
be said about 100% organic, grown from seed leeks. They are something
everyone brags about since their flavor is so highly sought after!

I would recommend transplanting leeks into ur bed, when transplanting take something and make a hole about 8 inches into the ground and then drop in the transplant. it will blanch the lower section and produces a more desirable leek. Another way to do it is to plant normally and then go back and mound dirt as it grows you can also do both methods together. keep up the great vids!

I love the leaves, they are great in stews and soups! The roots are great to throw on salads too, or in a stir fry. Those are beautiful leeks! What variety were they? I let my leeks go as long as possible, they end up waist high and some of them are almost as thick as my wrist. If they start to go to seed I just pinch off the seed head. Leeks freeze really well, and that makes me a happy girl!

Those are some really nice leeks! I like to plant them in alternate rows with carrots, because the smell of the carrot greens confuses the leek pests and the leeks do the same thing to carrot flies. Leeks can also be stored outside over the winter. Dig a shallow trench, put the leeks in the trench root end down and then let them lean against one side of the trench. then put some loose dirt, straw and / or dry leaves on top. That way, they will be easy to retrieve a few at a time, all winter long.

Rather than pulling and freezing your leeks, you might consider--assuming you love leeks as much as you indicate--growing Blue Solaise leeks as a late fall-winter-spring crop. With that heirloom variety, you can simply go outside to the bed in winter and harvest one when you want, given that Blue Solaise overwinters in Vermont with little to no protection. In fact, you may want to devote two beds to leeks, the variety you are saving seeds for (I didn't hear you say the name) and reserve the Blue Solaise for use for winter, when there's very little reason to go into the garden. I always get spring fever in winter, so having something growing there then is a pleasure.

I like the harvest videos because some of the things you grow, and more specifically the varieties you grow, are things I have never grown before and plan on growing next year. Being such a visual learner, it's nice to watch these harvest videos and see what I'm supposed to be looking for in the plants when I'm ready to harvest. I'm planning on growing leeks (from MIgardener seeds!) next year, and if I would have harvested a leek with a soft core, I would have no idea what caused it and I most likely would have made the same mistake next year. Plus, it's fun to see your harvest because I had a tiny garden this year so I can live vicariously through you guys. 😂 So KEEP DOING THE HARVEST VIDEOS PLEASE.

I doubt it tastes any different softer. I had some onions that bolted first year, but left them in the garden til I had to move them out, ate them anyway. Different look, same oniony taste. though not ideal size, certainly nothing wrong with eating it. Git in my belly!

@@Jj-gi2uv How I wish you were near me. I battle burdock all summer long. I definitely DO NOT plant it, and it's all over the place. Good for female complaints, I know, but that's mainly the roots, and given that the roots go deeeep and are hard to get out, I pity the poor woman who is willing to work that hard for a bit of natural medicine. I'm beyond the age, thankfully.

Leeks are biennials, won't make seed until their second season. I leave mine in-ground over the winter, harvesting them as I need them, mulching the soil to prevent a hard freeze when necessary. Of course when they're exposed to heat in late winter or in the spring, they'll make flowers and seeds. (Wasps love the leek flowers, by the way, so appreciate them for the pollinators they are.) Oh, and leeks aren't "a plant with roots and leaves:" they're a packet of tightly rolled, almost concentric leaves (which as you, Luke, have observed can grow to impressive length!) with a root system. For those who wondered, ALL of the leaf is usable although not all of it is enjoyable to most people who have tried eating it out of hand. There is NO other vegetable which transplants so easily, without fuss, and without succumbing to transplant shock.

WOW! These look amazing. I love leeks! 😊
Thank you for posting your videos. They are very helpful!
My leeks seem to flower before they reach this size - and when they flower, the centre of the leek becomes very tough and no amount of cooking makes them tender enough to eat.
I start under lights in spring, transplant the young plants late summer and leave over-winter to harvest around this time (June). No signs of flower stalks yet so maybe I should leave them another month to see if they fill out. 🤔
    Once again, thank you 😊

Luke... Dig ya a 6" hole when ya plant your transplant - fill as the leek grows - and even hill it some when its big enough... Push that white well up the stalk... You'll get more usable / flavorful production out of your leeks... They look great so you got the soil (etc) correct... Just get 'em deeper and hill 'em up and you'll be the Leek Master... LOL

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction 7 років тому +5

Burying them deeper and hilling them up some will cool them too and help dodge that bolting... Don't forget that they are a two year plant like an onion (bulb first year, seeds the next) so saving seed from a first year bolter is not a trait ya wanna encourage...

I grew a bunch this season, and the average white bulb to leaf was 12" or 300mm They like a bit of water, and plenty of space if they get big enough. The cross section was about the same as a coffee cup. I let a few go to seed and the average seed flower was about the size of a standard orange. Even after going to seed, the tightness of the layers had not diminished very much.
