I grew leeks last year from seed and although they're not massive they're really good! Made soup the other day, dug out some spuds, carrots and a leek, plus 1 parsnip (i literally had a few germinate!) and onions that I harvested last year. Bit of seasoning, turmeric and cumin and added lentils, was absolutely delicious 😋
I'm loving the grow guides for underloved plants like sunchokes and leeks! Making me have to rethink my garden expansion plans here! Maybe a bit bigger wouldn't hurt ;)
Before uprooting the young leeks for transplanting, give them a really good water. This will help you get them out of the ground a lot more gently, breaking less roots. 👍
I had some of the most beautiful, and most delicious Leeks last year, and I left a few of them over the winter so that I can enjoy their blooms this year.
Huw - living in a drier part of the world than you, I can testify to you that leeks absolutely adore rain! We tend to get less of it here in NW London than you get in Anglesey, but the past 8 months have been unusually wet by our standards but the leeks absolutely adored it. There are still leeks to harvest in the middle of April, when often in these parts, the leeks may have gone to seed 2-4 weeks ago. There's obviously a lot that gardeners can do to ensure they have healthy leek plants to put out, but ultimately, great vs good leeks tend to arrive with more vs less rain!!
Lovely clear video. Thanks. However, no need to cut off all the top growth. I trim off any yellow or damaged leaves, but you can use the whole leek in cooking. I harvest and chop and then put them in freezer bags.they last all year!
Same! Also, what a fun way to discover a new channel - I'm loving your stuff! Got me excited to actually cook up everything we've got growing in the garden atm... =)
Thank you very much Hugh. I was only thinking a few days ago that I might like to try leeks this year and was a bit daunted by what I had read. You've just shown how easy they actually are, so thank you.
Great that you start with leaks.I try to grow them since 2 years without succes. Now I know why. So I'm very thankful for this video . This year I will be successful. Thanks.More videos like this please.I love your garden. Very beautiful .
This is so timely! I’ve heard you and others gush about them so I am growing leeks multi sown in 6 cell trays. They’re coming along nicely and I’m going to experiment putting them under milk jugs, plastic tubs, and more to protect them from cold. My last frost date is April 15th so they’ll be in the cold a while.
Oh boy glad I came to you to know how to transplant my seedlings had no idea you put them down 4 inches where as onions are not more than an inch. Yes I will let a few flower that would be lovely Thanks so much from Alberta Canada
Thank you for this fabulous comprehensive guide to such an amazing vegetable! I'm really looking forward to growing a really good batch of leeks this year, we're opening up extra beds throughout winter to allow us to make the most of our staple favourites. I've just ordered and received your revised and updated 'Veg in One Bed' book, as we plan to try this out too to switch things up this year. Really enjoying it, great stuff, thank you!
Great info! I had no idea about transplanting them so deep! I've been going by the seed packet. My leeks ended up pretty small so I left them to flower.
Leeks are a fairly new discovery for me, and are truly delicious. The flavor is a bit like peas, which was a wonderful surprise. I let some of my smaller leeks flower last spring because they look beautiful in your videos, and they were so lovely I couldn't stop photographing them along with all the pollinators they attracted :) Sadly, either deer or groundhogs ate my leeks this fall, and I never got a harvest. Definitely setting up a fence this spring!
Cold is not an issue that we necessarily have to deal with here in Queensland Australia. 🤣🤣 However as we have a short season due to the heat I tend to harvest my leeks quickly then slice them in half lenght ways and then slice thinly. I then toss them into a plastic bag or contain and freeze. They keep so well and are easy to use, you just grab out the quantity you need and add to the recipe.
Thanks for info. In my area (Tewkesbury) we suffer from leek moth any suggestions apart from covering , also have you any thoughts about trimming roots and top before planting?
Good stuff. Do you not trim your leeks before dibbing in? Also the best leek dish I've made is leek au gratin with halved brussels sprouts in the mix which is lush especially if you use Stilton somewhere in the sauce or topping.
Great video more of this hands on please, you have growing so many years and it’s so valuable to listen to yours tip. I have to start indoors because the cold and also have problem with leek fly. Love your patience so please don’t feel you have to do short videos👩🌾
Nice video - thanks. BUT in many areas of the UK allium leaf miner is becoming a serious pest - Iost my entire leek cropt to it last year. If you ain't got it yet..... well you will do soon! Aparently the only preventative measure is covering with mesh during early spring and autumn. Be warned!
Huw! This is exactly the kind of guides we need, seed to harvest :D Last year, I (as always) sowed way more seedlings than I needed. Rather than chugging the spare winter leek seedlings away (multisown in trays), I popped them in between my lettuce. At first they got quite 'squished', at several points over the summer I couldnt even see them much. I thought "oh well", but I was baffled by what happened after the lettuce was finished / started bolting around mid july. As I cleared it out, tiny leeks were still holding strong, and within a few weeks had caught up with my "proper main crop" leeks. I want to test this further in the coming years - maybe theres a potential here to get even more food?
I really love these how to videos. leeks are so delicious, I missed the window where I live to plant them, but I can plant them in the autumn here, so looking forward to that. Thank you for demystifying how to grow this plant!
Lovely! I’ve never grown leeks. I’m in an apartment right now. Not able to grow much. I think I will look for a community garden. These bandits look great!
Eat the tops too!! A very nutritious winter green. 🌱 Leeks are my favourite winter veg, too, and I also love Bandit over here in Canada. I’m fascinated by your method - will try! Thanks Huw! Cheers to the new garden year 🎉 6:15
This was a fantastic 'how to' video. Really good explanation and demonstration of transplanting them. I've just popped a row of seeds in, hopefully they grow well and I can use your method. I love leeks, but at $3-5 a leek, they add up
Great video in time for the season. I've always put mine in a seedbed, lifted and given my leeks a "haircut" I trim the leaves and roots but always back fill with water (got this technique from John Seymour's fàmous book). I find it so therapeutic but might experiment with your method & John Seymour's method this year. You should have leeks named after you both ..2 great Welsh Gardner's.🤣
That’s a great guide. Sadly all my leeks were ruined by Allium Leaf Miner infestation last year. This year I’ll be covering the seed bed and main bed with a fine insect mesh!
You have my sympathies, so do I. It seems this pest came from eastern Europe in 2002 and is steadily migrating! 🤬 shop bought leeks are terrible, all the shops & supermarkets round here cut straight through the base, so I refuse to buy their rotting leeks! A good leek is a real treasure 😋
Would like to see more of these ‘how to’ please. So I can search for example ‘ potatoes Huw Richards’ and it will come up with videos of you and the vegetables that I have seeds for.
Question: does it take almost a full year to harvest after starting seeds? Start seeds a month before last frost, and harvest the following mid/late winter?
Thank you for this guide, it is very clear and to the point. Excellent. What protection needs to be used for leeks? Just netting for allium leaf miner?

I have never had successwith leeks/onions. Someinteresting tipshere. Thanks!
Just grew some from seed in Southern California, and they did surprisingly well with little fuss. My only complaint is that they grew so slowly, so need quite a head start.
In England and Wales allium leaf miner is now becoming an issue and will ruin leeks. I highly recommend covering your leeks from March-April & September-November with insect-proof mesh, just in case! We lost so much produce to them last year.
Well known Welsh gardener Clay Jones who was one of the old Gardener's World team used to trim the tops & roots of his leeks before planting, I used to copy this method and it worked very well , think I will do again this year. What do you think Huw ?
This is going to be my first year growing Leeks from seed. Very excited! Do you bother soaking the seeds ahead of time or just trust to the drainage of your seed bed to ensure they are moist enough?
Thank you for this instructional video lesson, Huw. I'll try your growing method in my garden in Zone 5, Colorado USA. Hopefully I'll have your brand of good luck! We still have 15" of snow on the ground, so planting will be in March and April or May, depending on the snow storms.
You make it so nicely explained I will try this way this year because last year I did in a module of 4 and was little messy and I had slug problems, thank you 😊

I bet it was delicious with all these garden fresh veggies!! Thank you for sharing.
I’ll bet it didn’t taste of leeks much though.. 😬
@@hanreality.7266 No, not a leek soup, but a delish soup just the same. I use leek like I use onions, but a more delicate flavor.
Sounds lovely. I will try. Thanks.

Like always, straight to the point, but also amazingly detailed. Everything is so thought-through, it's beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing

I've always struggled with leeks, this will be my year for a bumper harvest 👍 thanks Huw
If the ground is too frozen to get a fork in, leeks can still be harvested by cutting them at ground level for those in colder climates!
I love leeks, but had no luck with them last year. This gives me such good instruction! Thank you so much!
You are most welcome!

I was so scared to start growing leeks from seeds. Thank you for providing such a precise guide. I’m going to give it a try this year thanks to you 🎉
I could watch these all day Huw!!!! And we LOVE leeks.
Dude I was just thinking about how to start grow leeks in my garden when I got this notification! I love your content mate keep it up!!!
A tip I saw when separating alliums is to lift up when separating the roots instead of pulling sideways because they will tangle less.
I've learned to gently shake roots grown together, in water til they loosen up and then its much easier to gently tease apart. Patience works best.
Leeks, one of my faves ❤ tried to grow them last year without success. This short tutorial is very helpful, much appreciated 🙏
I grew leeks last year for the first time. I look forward to trying your method so I can get fatter ones. You’re a great teacher, thank you!
Thank you for this informational video! I live in Alaska, and just found out I can grow leeks here (no overwintering). I’m so excited for summer now!

Thank you for this video! This is my favorite video for how to grow leeks. I love the trick for separating the leeks out by using a bucket of water.
