      I saw them the same year at the Police Picnic in Toronto with The Police, Talking Heads, The (English) Beat, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, A Flock of Seagulls, & The Spoons.
      It was amazing. Tina Weymouth was very pregnant at that show and her bass sat on her baby bump, horizontal to the floor.

      I saw them in 1983 in Wichita, Kansas with UB40 as the opening act. The Police where great and I enjoyed their show immensely. Unfortunately, the yokels here in Kansas were not appreciative of the more traditional reggae style music played by UB40. Very sad....

      Than and Nothing Like The Sun snd The Soul Cages are a perfect music trilogy, Sting at the height of his artistic powers. Went downhill very hard after that (Ten Somner's Tales is a decent album with fome really nice dongs but afters its utterly forgetable).

    Sting is the lead singer of the Police and a solo artist as well. He's basically singing about how politicians and people in power will say anything (in other words, verbal sh-t) which turns out to be meaningless so that it sounds like "da do do do, da da da da". They use a lot of ska and Reggae beats.

    The Police were huge in the UK and the US back then. Many great hits. I think the first one I remember was 'Message In A Bottle' and then it was 'Walking On The Moon'. They were so different that some of us didn't appreciate its genius at first, but then they went to No.1 in the charts. One of my favourite sounds of theirs was from a song that wasn't a big hit. Check out 'The Beds Too Big Without You' and pump up the volume. I love the sound of that one. Æx 🙏

    A wicked pop song with some lyrics that grab u, part brutal, part vapid (on purpose) ....anyway, that guitar riff that backs the verses, andy summers’s guitar style is one of my favorite things in the world....this song is over 40 years old, & that style/sound of his guitar playing still sounds futuristic to me somehow.

    The Police do do reggae beats a lot. They are 2 British guys, the drummer is American. Sting is the singer. You have reacted to their songs before...Roxanne being their 1st big hit about a lady of the night. They are a rock band...saw them at Madison Sq. Garden in the 80's and it's was one of the most energetic concerts I've ever been to. Everyone stayed on their feet pretty much to move to the music ( James Brown concerts had that effect too ..lol)

    They had a few political-type songs, but sting’s writing specialty will always be love songs, pretty ones, or funky ones, or dark ones... yeah, they were political from time to time, a handful of times, they didnt over-do it tho. But, i know what Asia meant....if u hear all 5 albums tho, the percentage of “political” stuff is relatively pretty sparse .... they touched on a lot of subjects, but, sting is pretty obsessed with love songs & love triangles, and storytelling....some, like “synchronicity 2”, is more like societal observation/commentary than expressly political. A handful of songs were tho, no doubt, but they werent hyper-political, like The Clash could be.

    Nice reaction. Yes, they're from England, yes that's Sting singing. And the genre is Ska. That rock Reggae feeling to it. The Band No Doubt also did a lot of Ska around the time they became popular. This song is everything you talked about. And Asia yes it was on the upbeat. You're not crazy. Doing some syncopations there. A talented bunch. They had a lot to say about a great many things. And the political reach to it all. Move along nothing to see here. In the 80's it was the dems who lead the charge to shut down free speech in the music industry. Yup, I know who would think that today. But it happened. You can still watch the congressional hearings about it. Which just means that politics just sucks everywhere to me. But we must try to vote for folks who will do the right thing. Finding one is the problem through all the lies and misdirection's. The news doesn't help. Part that no one is jamming their transmissions line in the song. Very well played by the police. Sting did some rather cool political songs on his own. Check out his solo stuff. Some very cool songs there too.

    The greatest thing about The Police is that nobody sounds like The Police. Completely original, innovative and impossible to copy. The offbeat feel is created by the "backbeat" snare hit landing on the beat of 3 instead of 2 and 4 like typical pop music. Very reggae inspired.

      @@jbjacobs9514 that's why I said arguably. I find their style similar in it's relative simplicity, growing in self awareness lyrically while expanding the musical repertoire. They helped mainstream reggae in rock music, although they weren't the first in that. They had sold out stadiums full of screaming teenagers and tons of press. If every decade has one, I'm saying The Police were it for the 80s.

    • @jbjacobs9514
      @jbjacobs9514 Рік тому +2

      @@The_Kiosk I love them but they did not have the type of impact on society or the world that The Beatles did. As far as a decade, let alone in perpetuity, we know the impact the Beatles had and will have forever. The Police did not have that impact, certainly not for the entire 80s or anything like that. If you really think about it, the one "act" that OWNED the 80s, made people go out of their minds for the entire decade - changed people - was Madonna. Like her or hate her, she changed girls and she changed boys and she changed music, dance, and performing (and fashion). She owned the 80s. 83-90 you couldn't find anyone close to her in terms of world domination. For perpetuity maybe for bands, I go Eagles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and while none stayed together long enough (except the Eagles maybe), they had a forever impact on the world. No one says Police who lived through that time.

It is "Russians love their children too" - it is about the back and forth nukes tug-o-war (Oppenheimer's little toy, he sings) between the U.S. and Russia.

    Asia the "offbeat" sound you hear is the Police and particularly their drummer is heavily influenced by reggae. While rock music has the emphasis on the 1st and 3rd beat, reggae has it's emphasis on the 2nd and 4th beat making it sound "Offbeat" and giving it it's uniqueness.

    If you want to hear some Police Mash-up Remixes, check out the movie "Just Go With It". Is an Adam Sandler & Jennifer Aniston film. Or look for the soundtrack on You Tube.
