    Great video with easy to follow instructions. I paid $18.99 for semi-metallics at Autozone and followed your video. They work great, no squeaks, saved $100 on labor! Popping in the brakes wasn't as easy as it looks, especially the ones on the rear of the rotor (the one with the tab was the hardset ,) but still just took an hour and a half to do both sides on my first try. Thanks so much, keep making these vids, I just subscribed. Long live the Nissan Xterra, my favorite vehicle ever!

    That metal tab thing that sticks out is a low brake level indicator. When your pad wears down to a certain point it'll make contact with the rotor when braking, creating a ringing sound, indicating that you need new brake pads.

    so grateful for these xterra videos. 3/4 of my caliper slide pin bolts snapped when I went to remove them. I think people have a tendency to over-tighten them, spec is only 32 ft-lbs. If they are not breaking loose easily, definitely spray some penetrant on them and do something else for an hour or two

    Helpful demonstration, My son and I are about to change the pads on his Xterra SE 2006. Hopefully, the pad clips are the same. Now that being said, your viewers should also know to clean the guide pins. The caliper bolts into the pins; they are protected by a rubber compressable "boot" if you may. It's not hard, pull the pin/rubber boot, wipe completely off, apply brake lubricant to each and reinsert in reversal of removal. Each should easily compress by hand. The bolt head is usually rectangle and needs to be placed in its inserts of the caliper "squared" up so they do not rotate when you reinstall the caliper bolts.
    Why do I go over all this, this is an often missed part of the brake replacement process. If allowed to go dry, those pins will most likely bind in there slide holes and you may not be able to remove them. I had to purchase caliper brackets because of this. An unexpected expense. Those guide pins must glide freely so the caliper presses on the pads uniformly
    Also, use a small wire brush to clean every bit of rust off the calliper, the bracket, the space on the rotor between lug bolts. Spray down (wearing safety glasses) with BRAKE cleaner generously any moving part of the brake system that has dust. Wipe any cleaner off the rotor face with a CLEAN rag.
    Not trying to be a "know it all" , but those guide pins must be re-lubed.

    Good video. Only one concern. For the detail stuff when you’re removing the brake caliper, better lighting would help. Also, for some of the fine details stuff, better lighting and focusing on those details-panning in. When you installed the clip (minute 8:44), I couldn’t tell where you were placing it. Do you need a torque wrench for replacing parts, and if so, what is the torque recommended? I especially liked where you used a C-clamp for expanding the brake caliper. As I was watching the video, I was thinking to myself, I wonder what the price of special tools are needed to do this job? I prefer not to go out and buy a lot for expensive tools because I don’t know how often I would use/need them.

    Ry your video is a nice little tutorial of pad change just a few comments since you asked
    I find it nice that you put these out for people that do not or have not done service on their vehicles
    At 4:05 you show inside pad sorry but it was the only instance I saw of your used pad material an "That's not worn" now you said they were pretty low? well if your outside pad was worn I'd be looking at your slide instead of just slapping pads on there or you'll be out there in pretty much no time doing them again an if it's inside pad look at your caliper as the culprit.
    At 5:15 thats what I call the pad scratcher it's there to tell you your pads are worn before you go ahead an almost certainly ruin your rotors.
    At 6:30 you start with master cylinder why? if doing pads there is no reason to open your cap to collapse your piston and introduce air which has water aka moisture in it to a relatively sealed system unless you have been topping off fluid as your pads wore and every time you do you introduce more as brake fluid by design attracts moisture.
    At 8:00 you explain benefit for the lube just why put it on before installing pad just put it on when your ready to install caliper back on along with your slide pins after you have cleaned everything an reinstalled pads all your really accomplishing by this is giving yourself more opportunity to contaminate either the pads or rotor
    Why didn't you clean anything Rotor,Caliper,Pins or anything main reasons of complaints squeal abnormal wear an failure
    There is NO mention of resurfacing rotor an yours were pretty glazed at least rough up the surface some
    I originally watched to see if you were going to say nut sizes cuts down on the tools I'll need to bring out an if you knew the bleed sequence which neither were addressed either.
    All in all wow from the looks of it your pads really did look fine and had a ton of meat left on them an if you look straight on into caliper above rotor you will notice a inspection slot to know how much pad is left I do it when I get tires balanced/rotated just take a min to walk out to guys an ask if I can check the brakes since you have the wheels off and stick my head in wheel well I have never had anyone say NO over the years this included Discount NTB Firestone Sam's Costco just to name a few but anyplace that I had the wheels off at. Now I'm all for doing service/maintenance before it's metal(backing plate) on metal(rotor) I'm OCD with it actually but from the looks of it that brake job was just waste Ry

  • @drbookie2169
    @drbookie2169 2 роки тому

    I heard there is a bleeder valve that can/should be opened on each wheel that can be opened/used during the compression process of the pistons. Know anything about this? Kind of like how you opened the brake fluid cap in the engine bay.

      Buy a shit ton of tubing that will fit snugly around every bleeder valve. Take all tires off and connect all bleeder valves from each caliper to the tube. Run the tubes all back to the master reservoir and add a shit ton of brake fluid to displace all the fluid in the lines and just keep pumping the pedal. You can do it on just one at a time and watch the air bubbles go out and into the top of the reservoir. Just add enough fluid and keep bleeding each caliper this way until no bubbles come back. Need to do all 4 though.

    • @lorettacaputo6997
      @lorettacaputo6997 6 років тому

      Many xterra's had the failure of the transmission line within specific radiators cause the comingling of atf and coolant. Without constant checking of atf the problem arises when shifting is poor. Anyone fearful of this disaster can purchase an external transmission cooler and avoid a failure...which is what I did. Nissan didn't recall the radiators and acted just as if this was just a maintenance issue. Check out the many youtube videos about the xterra and smod....strawberry milkshake of death. Apparently the coolant totally screws up the tranny unless it is caught really early. Repair bill is often about $10K and thus the x gets trashed.

    i have a 2002 and my brakes are on the backside of my rotor. wonder why its different?

    • @Rythecarguy
      @Rythecarguy  8 років тому

      What do you mean? You should have a pad on each side that squeeze the rotor.

    • @mikel552
      @mikel552 7 років тому

      on the rear brakes they have a rotor and hat which is a rotor for the regular brakes and a drum brake for the parking brake. is that what your talking about?

      +Ismael Nateras It may not be the exact same but I would assume its VERY similar.

    I'm pretty disappointed that you mentioned NOTHING about the caliper mount carrier bolts. I found out today that they are supposed to be mobile, not solid. That is a pretty non typical situation as far as automotive repair, it really should have been included in this tutorial. Admittedly I'm stupid for assuming this tutorial was complete, but as a consequence of this omission, I drove to work and back today with my brakes rubbing. Please take care in the future to include such things.

      So you are saying that your slides were seized? Was I supposed to anticipate that your truck is broken?

    • @TheStrykerSeven
      @TheStrykerSeven 8 років тому +2

      Hey man, I'm not on here to flame you. Second gens are getting older, and since the slides are part of the calipers going on right; yes, it would have been nice if you mentioned them.

      TheStrykerSeven: Thanks assuming that everyone reading your reply knows what the hell you are talking about. What the hell is a mobile carrier bolt? Admittedly I'm stupid for assuming your reply was complete, but as a consequence of this omission, I drove to work and back wondering if my brakes would fail. Please take care in the future to include such things.

      Having only done brakes on my own and close friends' vehicles I don't have very diverse experience. I have only ever seen break caliper mounts with slides similar to those shown here. I didn't realize that this was atypical.

    When I changed my brakes, I did not re-use the stock shims. Will this be an issue?

      You did not use any shims?

    Hey Ryan, cant thank you enough for all of the content. I have been fixing my 06 Xterra right along with you. Most of the time because of what I learned from your videos. Just finished front brakes, rotors and pins, not the first time obviously. I am anxious to see the lift you put on your Xterra. I have thought of adding a lift kit, but I have what looks like only an inch or two to get into my garage. Could you cover something like garage door clearance when you lift the Xterra? Thanks Bill

    Should probably torque bolts to spec. Caliper bolts back out if not torqued correctly. I think factory torque is higher than anything you can do with a little ratchet. 136 ft lb for front calipers and 76 ft lb for rears...I THINK. dont quote me.

    • @mikel552
      @mikel552 7 років тому +3

      you are talking about the torque specs for the bolts to the knuckle, the larger bolts. The caliper pins, smaller bolts, would be torqued to 20 and 32 foot lbs. front caliper and rear calipers pins have different torque specs.but i do agree that torquing them is very important and craftsman torque wrenches are cheap.

      32 lb. Ft for sliding pins.

      The torque member bolt gets torqued to 136 lb.ft.
