Both versions are amazing but this stripped down version is exquisite and so tender with the slower build up to the "moment". Plus there's maturity and his phenomenal control in this one. The first one was a proclamation. This one is a prayer.
I have heard so many people sing this song, but so few can ever make you FEEL it like he can. WOW!!!
This is from the first ever concert in the Barn, about 2009 or 2010. I have seen David sing this song 4 different ways, every one beautiful.
I love both the original he did and this one as well....This one seemed more like a prayer too me...David can sing anything, and he does it with so much Love for God and and those of us lucky enough to hear him...Truly Amazing man of God!

The first version had the one of most incredible pianist ever in Mr. Burger.
The first time I heard this version I wasn’t thrilled with it either. I think this is one of those that ages like wine. I feel it more each time I hear it. Wait a couple of weeks and listen to it again.

I will always love David Phelps version but I just found Stephen McWhirters video of it and it is so heartfelt. He has a very unique voice. You should check it out.

BRO, This performance by David Phelps is truly a prayerful celebration of our Lord's Birth!
The first version was so stunningly beautiful that it may have no precident! And the presence of the Holy Spirit was and still is clearly felt by believers and unbelievers alike!
David was educated and trained in Classical music. I think some of those elements surface more often than not sometimes in his choice of songs and his interpretation of them. Other vocalists and musicians in his field of study will look to the performing arts, like theater and opera, while David had his calling for Christian music. His vocal talent was God-Given at birth; it simply needed the skills of fine-tuning to adapt to his genre of music.
Let's all give all the Glory to Almighty God that He saw fit to Bless David with Gifts of Song, and also to Bless us, His listeners!

Love them both - agree in statement that first is proclamation and this one more of a prayer. I also agree that the previous version done with the Gaither Homecoming video is my ALL TIME FAVORITE, BEST VERSION of this song - by ANYONE! Maybe that’s because I’ve watched it about a million times, lol. Maybe with another 999,999 times viewing this one, I’ll grow to prefer it. I think you would like David’s Christmas song “One King” David wrote it and sings it with his sister Sherri. Very beautiful- sweet and simple like clear starlight.

I completely understand your point on this. It is just interesting to me to see his maturity and evolution not to mention how strong and controlled he still is with his voice. The first version is like you are hearing the story for the first time and there is excitement there. This version is more mature, the story has set with you a while and now you are telling it to a group of people that know the story and it is a more reverent or prayerful. They are both amazing and I still listen to both versions often. It honestly took my listening to this version a few times to truly appreciate the changes. Either way, I'm not upset at your reaction. I completely understand where you are coming from. The one other huge difference is Anthony Burgery was on the piano for the first performance and you don't get any better than Anthony Burger. Unfortunately, Anthony Burger passed away in 2006 while playing the piano on a cruise ship with the Gaithers. He had a massive heart attack at 44 years old. The audience noticed him freeze up and hunch over during a piece he was accompanying Bill Gaither and they never revived him. This arrangement is David's style and masterful. Beautiful, powerful voice but I prefer the version he sang in 2000 live in Birmingham, Alabama with Bill Gaither. That version was awe-inspiring and the best version I have heard of this song. I recommend you listen to that version and see what you think. It left me with goosebumps all over my body; it was breathtaking.
I'm in agreement with your thoughts about the two performances. This version was more about David trying to give it some distinctive variations but it seemed more reflecting on him rather than just focused on God as in the first. In the first David gave emphasis to EVERY word in order to wring out every bit of meaning from each. His timing allowed focus ON EACH WORD! It felt like he was led throughout by the Holy Spirit bringing focus on Jesus - God having chosen to come join us - but yet in all His glory! David poured out HIS soul in that performance and when he was done, he stepped back and wanted no accolades. The applause was not to him but to the God he brought into the limelight with his singing!! When Bill Gaither brought him forward at the end, you could see on his face "it's not about me." Humility was CLEARLY his posture at that point. The earlier rendition is the purest!!

Because David is so talented sometimes he over does it. He's a talented arranger. Song still beautiful. But I do prefer those stripped down versions. You hear that voice and message so much more. Thank you and Travis ❤
I love David's voice, but I think I still prefer the older version with Bill Gaither ... That really gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. Talented artist, whose songs makes you feel you can worship and praise God all day long. Lot of talented singers from Bill Gaither group, one of my other favourites is Guy Penrod, quite the opposite type of voice of Phelps, but also a great voice!!
Please do the song “one wintry night” from the same concert you will not be disappointed!!
He definitely has great vocal abilities. Absolutely love this song. For something a bit different from this, again I recommend "90's Hits Santa Style" by the A Capella group Eclipse 6.
David's voice is amazing always.... But.... The first time was about Christ. This time was about David and his abilities. The first time He geled both of those things perfectly. This time you were more centered on all the rifs he was doing and his ability than what the song was about. That's my humble opinion. I agree with you. The first one is still numero uno.
Please show Sandy Parker singing “A Baby Changes Everything” music video. IF you do choose to show your viewers her singing this Christmas song video, it’s the one showing her standing in front of the microphone and it last 5:08 minutes. You will be amazed. PLEASE show it.
I wish you had viewed the original version " Bill & Gloria Gaither, Oh Holy Night with David Phelps" It's so much more powerful. I feel this one is done just to show off what David can do with his voice which is a lot, but the song got lost. The original with the chorus on stage will never be equaled.
