I have the camera for quite a while now, its tiny sensor has crazy dynamic range, so much so that it is comparable to 1 inch sensor camera, not to mention that crystal clear Leica at f/2.8, very silent lens compared to other superzooms that sound like motorbikes. Tons of options.

This is my 3rd Lumix FZ300, gave 2 of them to friends after using them a lot. As a professional photographer for 45 years, I took this camera on trips as it weight only 450grammes, and is compact enough, even did professional jobs twice with it. The lens is good even at 600 m/m focal, I made portraits of people hiding being pillards "using the orientable viewer which moves in every direction" in markets in Asia and many other places and you can see the pores of the skin of the faces. When you know about manual photography it is easy to use and do what ever you want. Great camera for action shot, pan and tricks, on fully automatic modes, intelligent auto and program mode. Batteries; I have 2 batteries and charge them "with the regular charger which comes with the camera" on usb outlets "getting commun everywhere" or 120/220 volts outlets. I also charge them with and external portable charger which I also use for my phone. Splash and dust fantastic as you do not have to change lenses which always bring dust on the sensor, this is a Big PLUS. Stabilisation is also very good. I won't talk about video as I like still photography. I never used the little flash incorporated in the top of the view finder. After heavy usage not one of the 3 camera I did own let me down after many years of intense shooting. More Pro than con for sure. I am thinking about buying an other one before they won't be available and for a very decent price.

Another PRO is the image stabilisation. You really can shoot handheld at 600mm equivalent. The biggest thing for me though is that when you're out hiking you never know what you're going to see next. I was out today and saw a couple of red kites but I had taken my G81 with me and the wrong lens attached. The flexibility of the FZ300's superzoom is a real bonus.

These do come with a USB charger now.
I had a Canon G10, but was never happy with it, so just got the uk 330 version and the reason for this was 3 fold.
1 f2.8 though the whole range
2 sensible 600mm lens, longer affects the camera usability
3 water and dust proof, VERY few have this and a must for travel.
This is ideal for holidays as you everything in one package with the advantage of adding filters.
For me the largest blow up so far is a 40cm2 which is ok with the small sensor.
For the cost of the camera it is a very good general camera.

Those cons where not very depressing. I only have experience of the Panasonic Lumix dmc fz72. But also a super zoom camera (60 x). I don't know if the FZ300 has the same issues but the biggest cons with the FZ72 is 1. The noisy image stabilazor when recording movies. I had to turn it off because it was so destructive. 2. Pressing the rear dial stopped working after a couple of years. A typical problem for some Lumix models. Not sure if that's the issue with the FZ 300. The button on the rear dial controls settings for all the M, A, S and P modes. So quite crucial. Even though this camera is quite old it's still around on the market. But it seems that the manufacturing of bridge cameras in general last couple of years have gone down. Many of the older super zooms are not available anymore. But the FZ300 still is. I have been looking at the Canon SX70 HS with it's 20 MP sensor, but after all the reviews on the FZ300 I am starting to lean towards getting one of these. Thanks a lot for the great review.

What sort of 'lag time' does this camera have? That is, when you take a picture, does the image in the viewfinder freeze for a few seconds while the picture is stored away, than the finder is cleared? This is important for me to know, as this camera replace the gear bag with two Sony DSLR bodies, three lenses and flash unit? @@AeetosOutdoors Basically the lens hae an iris. This allows light to reach the sensor. The larger the iris,at 2.8 the larger the iris is open the more light hits the sensor and visa versa. The larger the aperture or iris the more narrow the subject that gets in focus. Now the larger the sensor the more narrow the focus point is. These point and shoots tend to have smaller sensors so more of the picture is in focus. They also tend to not have the larger iris aperture sizes. So if you wish an out of focus background like a portrait it comes in handy, stay safe.

      @thefranglish3620 3 роки тому +1

@@AeetosOutdoors Constant aperture means the capability to stay at F2.8 while zooming. This is the real game changer. Most camera show variable apertures that automatically change from say F2.8 to F5,6 as you zoom in. It means 2 things : first when you zoom in with variable aperture, the Zoom loses in low light capability, as to when you can maintain the F2.8 throughout the zoom capability you can work in lower light conditions. Second, in a video you do not want to see aperture changes when you zoom in, as the image seems to get darker with no reason. It might not be important for pictures, but for videos it is essential that you can maintain aperture fixed during zooming. This is one of the main reason why the FZ300 is still a very good deal, and also much better for videos than the FZ82 for example, despite is bigger zoom. I charge mine via usb all the time. I have to use the charger of course put I plug it into a USB port all the time. My biggest con is the size of the sensor. It is bigger than a cell phones senso but it is small compared to say a micro 4/3rd or asp-c sensor. This affects photo and video quality big time especially at higher ISO's. Cell phones have software that do a lot of heavy lifting behind the scenes to mitigate this. If I could do it again I'd probably prefer something like the FZ2500 which has a larger 1" sensor.

You really did a poor job preparing for this video.
I' ve been using the FZ300 for more than 2 years now and I can assure you the this is not a manual camera at all. This is a 'Auto' AND 'Manual' camera.
In [auto mode] you have plenty extra features that you were simply unaware off. What about the built-in HDR feature [iHDR] or [Post Focus] which allow you to select your focus point AFTER you have taken the picture, or the Zoom which extends beyond 600mm up to 2940mm in [EX] mode. Neither do you mention the [Stop Motion animation] or the [Multi Exposure for Single Picture] just to name a few.
Why is it that all reviewers are stuck in the previous century and focus (pun intended) only on the ISO, A, S, P, M, f settings of a camera, but omit reviewing the [Auto] mode which has some really fine goodies. Do you remember the 'little red girl' scene in Shindlers List... well, you can take such a picture, out of the box. The [One Point Color] mode allows you to select one color that will remain, while all other colors will be displayed in B/W.
Really, you should take your time to go over ALL the features of a camera, for your next videos.

Thank you for the feedback Alain. When I researched this camera I was looking for a very particular role for it to play. I was looking for something that could replace my iPhone and allow me to develop (so many puns) my skills in video making. With that in mind that was what I focused on (again...)
The feature you mention are amazing and I would love to learn more about them. To start learning the camera I used the auto mode then moved to aperture priority and shutter priority to start seeing the differences between the two.
I am most definitely an amateur when it comes to photography and truth be told I had no idea what some of the features are!
Thank you for pointing these out and I’d welcome any advice on how to make the most of them.

Hi, can you tell me how you transfer photos and video to your computer with the supplied USB cable? The only cable I received was an AV/Out USB cable and all it did was transfer BMP files. I don't see a port for micro-USB. All my other cameras transfer just fine and are recognized.

Hi Chuck. I don’t use the cable, I use a card reader and take out the memory card and transfer it that way.
I believe you can also set up a wifi connection between the camera and your phone and transfer that way.
I would suggest searching online for the manual and having a read through to see if there are any other ways.

The FZ300 manual spells out one or two circumstances which can cause the camera to get hot enough that it automatically shuts down long enough to cool. The one which comes to mind is a sort of oddball feature (4K pre-burst) which probably 99% of owners will never use and most of those who do not to the point of causing a thermal issue.

What i found was. Even though it zooms in to 600, the image goes very soft. Also if you want to go past iso 800 the image gets super grainy. I personally believe it is better to go with a camera that has a detachable lense so when you are ready to upgrade you don't have to buy a whole new system either. Some of the new crop sensor mirrorless cameras have come a long way and you don't have to break the bank and it leave room to upgrade.

  • @bebopkirby

It’s a manual camera, what does that mean? The camera has a full range of shooting modes like all advanced cameras, from fully automatic to manual. I think a lot of people get intimidated by cameras like this because of the incredible amount of technology that is packed into this thing. I’ve had mine for a number of years and probably don’t take advantage of 90% of what the camera can do, I don’t even take video. But for me it is still a fantastic affordable all around camera for the nonprofessional. If I had one complaint it would be the finicky manual focus, better than the previous FZ200, but still a pain.

I agree that the manual focus is not the best and a bit fiddly, but then it is a very fast auto focus with lots of settings so I have no issue with that. The small sensor was something I knew about before I bought it but I find it very well matched to the pixel density and get amazing photos from it, matched with the fabulous lens I think its low light capability is more than adequate. The whole camera performs far better than its specifications would suggest, hence why it is still in production.

I've had one for about 2 years and for the things it's GOOD at the things it's made for and only ok for other uses. BTW, I never use this for stills.
Anecdotally, I got some great telephoto video at 4K that I couldn't have gotten, at least not easily, with my Canon DSLR and BMCC 2.5k. The very small sensor is a double edged sword. Paired with its lens it does well but in low light? Umm, it's pretty rough! Then again I was shooting a dumb horror film and the not-so-great look in low light actually made it better...weird.
I also like its electronic zoom for video, though it does change speed about half way so beware of this. It shoots in Cinelike-D which I use much of the time and like it the results. I use this mostly when I want either close-up telephoto (only optical, I NEVER use the digital!!!!!) or when I just want something when I can walk around and do full handheld shots of all focal lengths and not care about swapping lenses. It's nice that it will do f/2.8 throughout a zoom but it is not quite perfect in this regard--you can see some slight shifting in light levels.
One thing that I've found difficult and that is autofocus. Once it locks on it's not too bad but has trouble locking onto its target and will often hunt like a hungry aborigine! Manual focus I often find to be very difficult to use but since there are things I don't fully understand it could just be operator error!
Overall it's a good value for a bridge camera, just make sure you know which uses are its sweet spots and avoid the other..."sour" spots.
For an example of its ability, here's a clip from a fountain documentary I made. This was a rare example where I used the FZ300 exclusively. I didn't know I wasn't supposed to shoot this and got kicked out but got what I needed. I later ended up working there as a contractor. ;-)

The only problems with this camera is the defective top zoom lever which became unresponsive and useless, good it has the other lever on the barrel. Second, very very slow autofocus in video, especially on moving objects. Otherwise, this camera is a proof that you can technically make excellent, almost ultimate quality 4K video on a 1/2,3 inch 12 megapixel sensor. Today we have much bigger sensors, tons of megapixels, tiny cameras (action cams in first place and also better phones...) and powerful chips but the video quality is downgraded and lowered and this is obviously made by purpose.

Also if you wish to take into account that It could be my lack skill as a photographer, and I had just bought the camera yesterday, and I used it a music concert yesterday. Having said all that, I would like to just mention that I am not a new photographer, I am have used many professional level cameras before. I wasn't expecting a lot from the very very small sensor. Also I am not going to mention the video, because it's primary role is photography.
The image quality is very very bad. Worse than any smartphone I have ever used. It Is li similar to the quality of a 12 year old smartphone. Just my personal opinion, if you care about image quality, don't buy it. My take from this is that if you are buying super zoom camera, buy one with a one inch sensor and nothing smaller.

An FYI for anyone considering buying this camera for video. I bought this camera for travel youtube videos and I have to say I was disappointed by a few things.
    1. There is no Auto Stabilization on 4k video. Auto stabilization only works on FHD. If you are buying this camera because of the 4k ability then this can be disappointing (admittedly I am new to video so maybe there is some setting I am unaware of that would fix the shaky video). I am now wondering if a Gimbal would make my videos look smoother. That or I may look into finding a new camera.
    2. It's pretty heavy to hike around with all day especially when you ad a shotgun mic and a JOBi tripod. Don't underestimate this factor!
These are my main complaints but the picture looks great on 4k (when it isn't shaky) and the zoom is excellent (if you have a tripod, otherwise the shakiness gets worse). Hope this helps!
