His first remarks remind me of what Ernesto Spinelli wrote in his seminal book "On Therapy". The relationship between the therapist and the client, if you want to use that terminology, is the key to successful outcomes. That is why social connection, family and friendship connections are therapeutic, if both parties can listen and hear and respond with empathy.
I imagine the great Dr Szasz would've found an insightful and good-humoured way to duly poke fun at a 'tribute' to him -of all people- that begins with a disclaimer that 'due to the highly technical nature' of his common sense 'it should only be shown to professionals in accredited programmes in certain fields'.
Szasz didn't write books about problems and suffering; he wrote about the relationships of psychiatry and medicine to liberty. He also wrote other books defending the freedom to drugs and to suicide.
Think this recording is from Oct.28,201 Culver City Doubletree Hotel. SZASZ' last Southern California appearance. I met him and got a photo and his autographed book (Now in its 60 th year!!)
Mental health is the development of a mental + emotional dedication, a cathexis. Mozart had this about the time he was born, since his mother was a violinist - who played Leopold's music!
Why does the legal system waste time on the McNaughton rule?? (Which is used all too often to violate Constitutional rights of those who are NOT criminals)
I’ll venture a guess: When people lose inspiration, which is a function of “heart” (meaning love, courage, and faith), they grasp at an inferior level of functioning - power, dominance and control. An over-reliance on “winning the competition” (empowerment) shows an inability to yield to the higher function of cooperation. An obsession with empowerment is a demonstration of arrested development, an inability to adapt to a sick environment that promotes/advertises empowerment as the “highest” ideal and mocks things such as forgiveness and graciousness.
Amazing work, but I sense a hint of islamophobia, Muslim don’t take their imams as healers, he is confusing Hindu religious leaders! But everybody is allowed some mistakes, but great-full for other points!!
Yes, he devoted his life to confusing Hindu religious leaders. As everyone knows, it's dangerous to have clear-minded Hindu leaders around. And getting the facts wrong about a Muslim's relationship to their imam means that he fears all Muslims, of course. So great-full for your contribution.
Not sure how you define "healer." The Journal of Muslim Mental Health (I kid you not), published an article that says, "The few studies that were undertaken in Europe and the United States revealed that imams played a significant role in addressing the psychosocial needs of their congregants, and this role increased in the post-9/11 era." Psychotherapists might call this "healing." Szasz's view of Muslims was as his view of Christians or Jews. He was an atheist and had no bias for or against any religion. He was certainly aware that religion consoles many people, and has also been at threat to life and limb at times.
Szasz was an absolute hero. We need this skepticism of the mental health industry more than ever now.
