    Apologies for the low quality VHS rip. It has unfortunately deteriorated and this is all that remains.

    He articulates himself very well in English and it's he's second language..
    Moreover T.Szasz came to the US when he was 8 years old, had finished he's medical studies and became PHD in Psychiatry.
    Great achievement for a foreign person...

      Yes! Very mentally stimulating to see 2 obvious "intellectuals" tackle some very important and disturbing subjects, without going for each other's throats! I have my own solutions to these widespread illnesses, mental and physical, which I PRACTICE, and why I have not been sick in 37 years! Of course, bc I have no CREDIBILITY (no titles), I am not taken seriously by the programmed masses, but instead I am ridiculed, and swept aside!

    If it's medical it has to be biochemical, anatomical, or physiological. Otherwise you're making an assumption that some reductive causal chain of dysfunction that stands behind the inapt behaviour. But the people who casually assume this can't decide whether the same causal chain stands behind their behaviour, including their medical practice. As Szasz says, there were a few people who'd been poisoned by mercury or dropped on their head. Then there were others who behaved in this way, with no obvious cause. As soon as Judeo-Christian ethics demanded that this group deserved a very therapeutic approach their numbers increased. Well, of course. Go figure.

    • @adamnyman7973

      Yes, but the ‘insanity defense’ is only absurd for a determinist if he goes on to deny the causal chain behind every murderer. If he affirms it, it’s perfectly coherent :)
      I am very much such a determinist. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t put murderers in jail tho. It just morally absolves them. I would never argue we put people in jail to punish them, rather we put them in jail because they are a menace to society.

    Ling and Szasz had a point about what thad come before and the use of drugs but if you are mentally ill these are semantics you juast want to feel better. A pragmatic approach that is humane and paitient focused sometimes works. Drugs rearely bring panacea.

    • @MrMatstu
      @MrMatstu 2 роки тому +4

      It's not just semantics. If you pretend that an ethical/spiritual/existencial (whatever you want to call it) problem is a disease, and try to treat it like a disease (even in a humane way), you are bound to fail to address the basic problem, even though you can sometimes succeed in squelching the symptoms. Lies have consequences. That's why psychiatry is so terribly ineffective today.

    Dr Szazz committed suicide himself. The great Catholic Theologian St Thomas Aquinas said suicide is a sin, an offense against God. This Atheist Psychiatrist spoke too much about Religious arguments of humans but said nothing about God Himself, and I suppose that is because He does not believe in Him. In one way or another all Psychiatry has been injurious to humanity as a whole. The harm done has greatly outweighed the so called benefits.

There are many who do have Mental Health Illness including Depression, Anxiety, BiPolar Disorder, etc. There must be Free Mental Health Centers throughout this Country Which offer Doctors, Nurses, Social Workers, Shelter advisors, Mental Health Professionals. There is a Crisis in the USA. Gut Health is also involved and must be addressed. A Holistic, Integrative approach is best .
    Some Disorders do require Drugs . Delusional Disorders, Dissociation, Psychosis and more serious Mental Health Disorders.

      Most people in mental hospitals/system are people who have been on the receiving end of relentless violence & or neglect since infancy rarely act out the violence perpetrated against them. This is what sent them crazy in the first place. The shooters & terrorists are also subjected to God knows what. Most people in mental hospitals are very compassionate long suffering individuals who have to put up with being labelled & isolated because the parents were not parents in many senses of the word. Psychiatry is trapped these days, but it is a trap of their own making.
