In all honesty I consider Come Taste The Band the final Deep Purple album, even though it was recorded without Blackmore. Ritchie himself said the reunion was about money, and for 2m each I think they could have done better than Perfect Strangers. It was good, but DP were always meant to be sensational, and Gillans voice was going even as far back as 1984. Had Glenn Hughes not been unwell with cocaine addiction I would have preferred a MK3 reunion instead, but in the '80's they weren't as popular. Coverdale and Hughes would have written and sung better than Ian Gillan. I was also disappointed that Gillan wouldn't sing MK3 songs, as they played at least three of theirs during 1974/75. The reunion was ultimately a disappointment, and we saw them for what they are: five middle aged rockers looking for a payday. Give me Tommy, David and Glenn anyday. Hughes and Bolin may have had issues with drugs, but they believed in what they were doing, not cashing in on a famous name for the sake of nostalgia. RIP Tommy and Jon.
And, of course, songs from Burn, Stormbringer and Come Taste the Band were left out becouse of Ian Gillan's massive proud, ego and arrogance. What a shame.
Yep, all Gillan's fault. I bet if they had another singer in his place the setlist would be full of Coverdale songs. Oh wait, that DID happen a few years later and the only Coverdale song to make the cut was Burn. Now, I'd love to hear Gillan having a go at Burn, but his reasons for not doing it are perfectly understandable and have obviously nothing to do with ego and arrogance. He wouldn't be singing Hush at every concert, including solo shows and the R & R HoF induction, if that was the case.
Of course Gillan did sing Hush, Mandrake Root and other Mkl DP songs back in 69 when he joined Purple. After ‘84 there was more than enough Mk ll songs to choose from so obviously no need to do any Mk lll songs.
