  • Flying high on Brewdog Airlines! | The Craft Beer Channel
    This week the Brad flies solo with Brewdog Airlines, on their maiden trip from London to their brewery and hotel in Columbus, Ohio. Aside from the flight nearly being diverted, it all runs as smooth as a booze cruise at 35,000 ft could be expected to...
    Disclaimer: Brewdog paid for Brad's flight and hotels, and drove him around with lots of other journos and EFPs.

    Hey - this is a important message from CBC. Since filming this video, the toxic, misogynistic and exploitative nature of BrewDog’s working culture has been exposed by brave accounts from workers and a BBC documentary (link below). As such we no longer can support the brewery in any way, but are leaving this video up so others can research and understand the allegations and evidence in context. We also leave it up in the hope that the brewery will examine its considerable flaws and atone for them, improving for current and future employees, and allowing them to once again become a force for good in beer.

      I would be more jealous if the beer wasn't brew dog beer! Brew dog has been downhill for past few years. They care more about stunts than the actual beer. If they're not too careful, their empire will come crashing down when ppl start to realise their beers are actually shit. Nonetheless one has to admire the stunts they do, I really want a beer shower!

    Great video, it portrays what is essentially wrong within craft beer as a model of business: Brewdog as the neoliberal dream to conquer the world.

    As an EFP I made it on this trip, and it was awesome. In-between the brewdog stuff, there were loads of REALLY great local micro breweries, elevator and seventh son being my favourite, and there was an epic trip to cinci to check out e very different independent breweries there.

    I'm kinda watching this with mixed feelings. Although I get the novelty of all this, it feels very uncomfortable that everything in the flight, hotel and taproom is branded and commercialised. Everything is stickered and logo'ed (don't know if that's a word, but it is now).
    It might be a little naive of me, but shouldn't a good brewer simply brew well?

    • @TheCraftBeerChannel
      @TheCraftBeerChannel  5 років тому +3

      Well it should 100% be their main focus but these days there are thousands of other breweries brewing excellent beer so just doing that isnt enough if you want to expand.
      Whether you NEED to expand is another question...

      Jon thanks Jon. Columbus is a pretty cool beer town. Lots of great beer bars including elevator brewing, seventh son brewery, rock mill tavern, and short north and Franklinton brewdog bars. Also some cool themed bars like 16 bit barcade and pins mechanical co that was a mini bowling alley joint. Some great places to eat around the short north arts district too. Cincinnati was cool too and I visited rinegheist brewery briefly which was an epic place.

    whilst the thought of reaching out of the shower to grab a decent beer definitely does seem desirable, is there really a need for this sort of thing. I like the idea of a hotel in a brewery but somehow for me Brewdog seem to be just a marketing company which is producing gimmick beers now... and having an airplane with "high altitude" beer on board... I dont know its just not what I consider craft beer to be all about. I also couldnt tell you the last time I had a Brewdog beer which I thought was new and interesting. Punk whilst a good ipa just seems dated now considering what other breweries are doing with the style. I feel they are in danger of becoming a hipster version of Carlsberg, and when you see the massive scale its hard to think they arent thinking about profit margins now more than process.
    I guess to me it seems part of a bigger question, when looking on sites like beermerchants, or Rad beer and the host of others, as well as a lot of bottle shops is it really necessary to be trying to punt 330 ml cans for over 4 quid or 500ml cans for upwards of 6 quid a go, with radical artwork, stupid names and adjunct and other additions that take away from the real craft of making something special with just 4 ingredients. There seems to be a saturation now of craft breweries and a lot of them are really not doing anything special to justify their price tags.. Is craft beer in danger of disappearing up its own arse.. answers on a postcard!!

    • @TheCraftBeerChannel
      @TheCraftBeerChannel  5 років тому

      hey thanks for the in-depth comment! Would love more of these on the channel. So first up, I think it's important to remember that Brewdog, while they make some incredible and exciting beers particularly their big stouts, aren't really aimed at beer geeks anymore. They are mainstream - so they aren't looking for new and interesting, they are looking to convert people outside the beer world by making lots of noise and approachable but tasty beer. Sometimes I think they nail it, sometimes they go too far. This brewery and hotel is something very special though, and even though Brad and I can be cynical about Brewdog, it blew Brad away.
      With regards to craft disappearing up its own arse, to some extent that's why we need Brewdog, making decent IPA for £1.99 from Tesco! As for the endless experimentation and high pricing, this is always going to be the case in the UK at least - but out of it comes great things so we always try to look at them, rather than the nonsense. People like DEYA, Burning Sky, Verdant, Yonder - people who have unique outlooks matched with very high quality outputs, born out of these scenes. So long as these kinds of breweries thrive, then the "craft" approach is doing its job.

    • @SLM3573
      @SLM3573 5 років тому

      @@TheCraftBeerChannel nailed it.. I dont diss Brewdog because they have probably turned more people onto craft beer than any other brewery I just feel they have reached a size and reach now where they arent immune to the demands of major macro breweries. I will probably end up trying out the hotel just to sample the other beers in the worlds best minibar :-)

  • @MrHodster
    @MrHodster 5 років тому

    But it’s not like you could have said anything subjective on a brewdog “gifted” free trip is it. And as they are becoming a powerhouse and very influential player in world beer do you think this channel would be strong enough to say a bad word?? I think not. And that is exactly what makes me feel uncomfortable about this whole scenario.

    • @TheCraftBeerChannel
      @TheCraftBeerChannel  5 років тому

      Hey. Totally understand your concerns. However, Brewdog's size or influence in no way affects our ability to criticise them, and we have done on a number of occasions particularly in our Patreon live shows. Had this trip been problematic, or had we seen things we needed to flag or criticise we would have - and Brewdog would have had no issue with that either. Press trips are the norm in journalism and most companies now accept and even encourage the fact that it doesnt guarantee positive coverage

    • @TheCraftBeerChannel
      @TheCraftBeerChannel  5 років тому

      We also ALWAYS declare press trips or anything that might affect our ability to be entirely impartial so our viewers can make up their own minds.
