  • Is it worth moving to Malta in 2024 ? The answer you will find it in this video. I asked the Expat community that is living in Malta if they would recommend for people to move to Malta, and they had a lot to say. The general public gave a very negative comments about their life in Malta, from pollution, traffic, expensive lifestyle to slavery and racism in Malta. The comments are jaw dropping so have a look at the video in full

There's no point in people who just say "no" with no explanation. Australian who has lived in Malta for seven years. Yes, there are some things I don't like but lots more that I do. Cost of living here for a retired Australian is fairly cheap for most things.

Great comment . People talk about traffic it's the same in Australia and Dubai, for example. The cost of living has gone up all over the world. I think it's ideal as retirement.
Alex, you mentioned other places in Europe, but not many have the charm and peace and relaxing lifestyle like Gozo, that's why so many expats make it home.

I'm a south Asian living in Switzerland for over 20 years and work in the banking and technology sector. The problem with living in Switzerland is that it is undoubtedly THE most beautiful country on this planet and once a person has lived here its pretty much impossible to move elsewhere. Be it the nature, quality of life, standard of living or salaries, no country can beat Switzerland. I was considering retiring in Malta just for the weather and language part but looking at your video i have now changed my mind. Just some information, i noticed that prices of grocery and food in Malta are comparable to Switzerland but most people in Malta don't earn even close to 60K euros. I wonder how can they afford such an expensive life when the salaries are so low. I also read about south Asians who want to illegally move to Malta at first and then escape to a better Europeans country. So in a way its acting like a gateway for illegal immigration. I wonder how Maltese governments/immigration could allows this happen. Crooked ways to exploit people and make money wont be sustainable in the long run. I will be visiting Malta in January 2024, but i have the least expectations whatsoever. In fact i spent some time watching a recent interview with the finance minister of Malta (Clyde Caruana) who also addresses most of the issues that were discussed in your video. I suggest all Maltese, tourists and expats living in Malta to see it. Here is the link, ua-cam.com/video/aVrWS9bCP_s/v-deo.html

Great video, Alex. I lived in Malta from 2017 - 2021 and now I am living in Ireland (we always wanted to move here) But recently we started to miss a good weather, even though we love cold weather, but our son can't play much outside and he loves going to the beach. I was thinking to move back to Malta since my sister still lives in there and to continue working with igaming. I've worked with igamming while I was living there but I was wondering, is it worth to move back to focus my career in igaming in 2024? I would high appreciate if you could talk about that in your next videos, Alex. Cheers.

As a tourist who has visited Malta many times, the one thing I've noticed is that the traffic is insane, and I think that there has been over development, but the upside of that is that there is a great selection of restaurants and Hotels
But when you speak to locals there is not a lot of positivity, but as a tourist I find it still has its charm, but it's a lot more expensive, especially since joining the EU

That is the problem, speaking as a local, Malta is being redesign to cater to tourist not the local population. it is great to visit but not great to make a living here.

Dear Alex many thanks for your thought provoking video.
I am Maltese born & breed & have lived here all my life (now in my early 60s). I have seen the Island change. Environmentally for the worse as so much of the limited open space has been built up as the population increased (long before the ExPats excluding the British) discovered this "rock" in the Med. Malta is dry; our geography does not include high altitudes or the right terrain for forests. Those looking for such an environment have to steer clear of Malta. The rainfall here is low; water is a scarce commodity. Malta technically qualifies as semi desert. Too many do not realise this. Everyone's present lifestyle is possible only thanks to the reverse osmosis plants which are constantly producing drinking water from sea water. It is irrelevant if you come from a poorer country, one of Malta's neighbours (ex Sicily) or cold Sweden. The physical limitations of Malta are obvious if you look at a map. Living in Malta was 'cheap' only if you were after a simple life without frillies. The well healed Maltese always travelled away to enjoy the extras or pleasures not available locally even way back in the 1940s. It is only in the present time that in the imagination of some a small Med Island can double up as Dubai or the Maldives. The Maldives are a case in point. The majority of the locals there do not live the life, the tourists & ExPats rave about. The idea of leaving your place of birth for a more interesting or comfortable life is a very recent idea fuelled by many factors. The sense of community has weakened in many places around the world prompting some to search for an imaginary perfect place where a fun life is possible on repeat. I am afraid such expectations cannot be met in Malta or anywhere else, for that matter. Only if you are blessed with good health, a secure income that covers all your personal economic needs, however big (or small) & a daily routine with just the right dose of human connection for you personally will life seem worth living. This is an ambitious combination which is difficult to get right. Anywhere not just in Malta. The risk is that a person who is dissatisfied with life here in Malta will also be dissatisfied (in the long run) also elsewhere. An ExPat by definition is a person living somewhere which is not his place of birth. The motivation to leave the country of origin varies although the economic one often ranks first. Malta is no different than other places; the ones with more money in their pocket & no money worries are maybe just 20% of the population. The reason for their good fortune & privileges will vary but this is also the reality everywhere else on this planet. Malta is not Disneyland; a place of make belief. Neither is it some sort of El Dorado. This is what I personally hope all potential ExPats & current ExPat understand & keep in mind, always.

I'm a Maltese expat living in Ireland.. I love that you are making these posts about my birth country!
As with every country, Malta has it's ups and downs and the preference of country boils down to what the individual wants and values.
I will say this.. If we as an individual have a generally negative outlook on life.. Regardless of where we live, we will take our negative outlook with us and no country will fix that 😉

Ciao Alex! Thanks for being you...your delivery of the content on your channel is very entertaining and informative. I was happy to discover it.
As for this topic...I realize it's a couple of months ago but as I have just seen this video, I wanted to share my two cents. Happiness is a very complicated and interesting topic to dive into and as it pertains to what you're reviewing here, we can be certain of one thing, happiness comes from within.
Hence, generally speaking, the people, places and things that we think "create" our happiness...is not the reality. They may affect our sense of happiness for a short time but at the end of the day, they will not sustain our happiness.
If we are happy within and happy with ourselves (which is a whole other struggle for humanity), then we are more likely to experience happiness in any environment, with any job and with any group of people.
So, from the comments that you were sharing here with a resounding "no," it would be interesting if all of those people were magically transported elsewhere, and you asked them if they were happy with life in XXX, they would likely say "no" as well. At the end of the day, we take are happiness or our unhappiness with us wherever we go.
Hope to bump into you on the streets of Malta this June!! :)

    Very good Alex, interesting video.
I was in Malta last year and I love it. Malta is a vibrant and beautiful place with amazing culture and people.
Sure, I noticed the crowded public transportation, the traffic, the garbage, the construction and I heard about the political seen in Malta. I also understand that tourism is one of driving incomes for this country but some of the most beautiful places in Malta are a tourist traps, anyways you are on vocation so you don't really focus, you just want to enjoy.
I really think that the issues are not only in Malta they are worldwide. Most of us are overworked, underpaid and mentally exhausted thinking all the time how to connect all the dots in our life.
It is no one to blame but us - the people. We created a materialistic, superficial and greed driven societys.
So I have a few questions:
    What quality of life is?
What values as people and society we have?
    Quantity or quality?
Do we focus on the problem or on the solution?
Is there anything to be grateful for?
Who can solve the issues we have?
What do I do everyday to improve myself?

Hi Alex, very good video as usual. Your opinion and explanation at the end is right on target.
There are so many things to consider to make the move here, it totally depends on the infividual, what lifestyle they want and can afford.
I have lived here for 15 years now coming from America and could tell you what i found about the good and the bad.
The thing that bothers me the most is the overpopulation since ive moved here and really wish people would seriously take thid into consideration. I believe the islands have more than doubled and soon the Maltese will be the minority here which is a shame.
So in my opinion, at this time the only positive for ME about living in malta is that English is spoken and i can afford to live here with all the comforts of home back in the USA and i have the benefit of being both a US citizen and a Maltese citizen.

    • @ampa4989

Malta does NOT have all the comforts of US or even major European nations. The people are nice, the weather's good, prices are reasonable and it's relatively safe if you avoid certain areas. But the lack of shopping and dining options is glaring. And the level of public amenities is wanting.

I am English Maltese. Live in the UK but plan to move to Malta. I have a semi finished flatvin ST Pauls. But now reluctant to finish and as i keep seeing Malta change for the worse. Over populated thats not the peoples fault but the government for not controlling it. Over development and badly built ie no insulation. Positive side is the mild winters i love the autumn and winter there compared to the UK. Maybe Malta will improve, but that is done to the people in charge. There are nice green areas in the North . Nive to walk near Mistra Bay. There is a bird sanctuary near there i have not visited yet. Good and bad in every country. Change for the better can happen but instead of moaning try to do something.

This is my opinion regarging my experience:
Pros: Malta has amazing weather and is a small place where things work fast, such as obtaining residency or government procedures. The gambling industry pays well, and there is good healthcare.
Cons: There is dust in the environment, and rubbish collection is a disaster. People drive at 120 km/h in small streets. Fireworks in the summer start as early as 7 am and continue throughout the whole day. Maltese people take advantage of foreigners, there is labor exploitation of non-EU nationals, and there is low public investment.

Alex I've watched like 10 of your videos in a row tonight, and I came to a conclusion, that ppl just love to moan about how bad their life is, but do nothing about it at the same time. It's all about getting out of your comfort zone. Me and my wife have lived 5 years in London, and another 5 years in Bristol, where the weather is soul destroying and depressing especially in the winter. I'm inviting all these unhappy expats from Malta to move to the UK just for a year, and try to make sense of it. Yeah it's ridicioulosly expensive, yes the traffic is 2nd worst after London, but the roads in Malta look like Dubai compared to the ones here. So please leave Malta if you're so unhappy there, as everyone deserves to be happy, unless you choose to be miserable. We'll hopefully be moving to Malta this year, thanks to your videos Alex, so thanks again. All the best everyone, and try to stay positive.

As a Dutchie i can tell about The Netherlands in compare with Malta. Ofcourse i did not live on Malta, but on base on your video's Alex i can explain.
The rest in the Netherlands start on normal base from 700 to 1200 a month. ofcourse there are some under and over it, but you just need to be lucky.
Besides that, you need to pay ihealth nsurance 150 on average, becuase normal health is mostly not enough. Gas, electricity are average 170 euro. TV and internet 80 euro. Car 70 and groceries are at least 70 a week. Minimum income of a month is 2K. So also there it is not that easy.
I can tell you, as mentioned in the video, gasoline is arround 2 euro a litre. cigarettes and liquor are full of tax and expencive. Groverie in Malta are not that expencive. Besides that better weather and a lot nice places to hike. A lot of dissension about political background about imigration, safety and health care. People with a chronicle muscle disease mostly like weather in Malta more beceause they got less pain.
I can understand about building and air pollution. But here they could not build anymore because of the air has to much pollution. So every country got his problems and i would definitly visit Malta once again.

Alex, my wife and I love your videos and always look forward to the next one. I would be interested to know how foreign retirees/pensioners living in Malta would answer your question. My wife is retired and I will retire at the end of next year. We are scouting different spots in Europe to retire to (from the US), primarily as a home base for travel but also as a place we will enjoy living and integrating into the local community - we want to be immigrants, not expats, if you know what I mean. We won't have a daily commute, nor will we have the worries that go with juggling home and work life. We have looked at, and rejected, Portugal, but France and Malta are on our radar. We will be in Malta in early April 2024 to look around and get an impression; if we like what we see we will return for a more in-depth visit. In the meantime, we hope you have a joyous Holiday season and perhaps we'll see you in Malta in the new year.

Malta is a victim of its success. Most bad comments here are coming from Maltese which are fed up with too many foreigners. The population doubled in a few years which brought construction and strain on infrastructure together with high rents in relation to salaries earned, especially for foreigners as most Maltese are homeowners. If you can afford a nice house and have a good income or pension. It's worth giving it a try. The island is safe and fun and health care is cheap and good.

It depends on so many things whether you would be happy here or not. So many variables for what different people are looking for and your income could or could not be a huge issue. As mentioned prices of homes are expensive also cars. And then you also have to take into consideration of the medical system. Too many things to mention. If you have direct questions feel free to ask. I will try my best to answer them. 😊

It just comes down to personal taste. I live in Western Australia and plan to spend a significant amount of time in Malta as soon as possible. My father was born in Birkirkarra and came to Australia when he was 21 with his family. The only expectation i will have is that it's sea should be much warmer than ours 😅. Well, FB tends to be full of negativity anyway. And I find it very annoying when people just say, "No," and then don't explain why. Like, are they all people barely scraping by due to a low salary? (If so, they'd be miserable anywhere.) Are some of them missing family and friends back home? (Because, struggling to find friends can lead to being unhappy.)
I haven't lived in Malta (but I visited for 5 days, loved it, and cannot wait to return - no, I don't yet know if I'd want to move there, but I felt more like I could live there than some other places i.e. Berlin and Rome where I just felt completely out of place) so I can't speak for if people should move there or not, but I know to be happy anywhere you have to have a good salary and friends/loved ones. I was an expat in England for nearly 2.5 years (Leeds, in case you're wondering), and initially I loved it there because I did have that group of friends, but slowly they moved away and when I struggled to find a job (I went there as a student), I felt as though I didn’t belong there anymore. However, I still love England and return every year. I'm not opposed to moving back if I could get a job, but it is true that the weather can be quite a downside (something that isn't the case in Malta).
Next year, when I go back to Malta, I want to stay away from the tourist areas as much as possible and hopefully meet some locals and really get to talk to them. (I have met some Maltese people - including my Maltese language teacher [well, so far I've only chatted with him online but he's absolutely lovely] and they've seemingly been happy living in Malta, rather than wanting to move away.) I hope I will get a really good idea on if I'd like to move there or if it'd be better to just go there on holiday.

Very low wages compare the expenses. But most important thing is that island is very crowded compare to its size and infrastructure. In a certain point it will be a huge issue. Also demographic proportion is changing in a certain way. Maltese people do not work or go abroad so many expats especially from a certain countries are coming to here. Already some areas have been used by certain groups. It will be serious problem in the future for sure.

  • @atrumluminarium
    @atrumluminarium Місяць тому

I think an important thing these comments should have noted is where they're living in Malta. If they move here and just stay in Sliema/St Julian's/Bugibba area of course your experience is shit lol. There's literally a whole other island of Gozo you can visit that has so far been sheltered from the forces of globalisation and commercialisation that most expats never bother visiting.
The excuse that there's "no open spaces" is completely bizarre that can easily be debunked by looking at Google maps. The country still has about 80% of its area as countryside which for an island that is both smaller and more densely populated than London is quite good.
The minimum 50k salary is bullshit too. The average salary here is 24k and the median is 21k. Given that distribution if the 50k statement is true it would mean that more than 3/4 of the population is living in poverty which is simply not true.

I have always felt that most people in those expat groups are people who live in big expat communities in places like Sliema/St Julians and only hang around with likeminded people. After years of living here, the only Maltese they know is "mela" and is happy to complain how bad all of Malta is. I personally left the "expat community" fairly quickly. After 13 years in Malta, now living in a town most of them probably cannot even pronounce correctly, I am happier than ever and pleased in my everyday life not having to live in St Julians anymore and deal with all the BS going around there.

In Malta, graduates wont even make annual 50K euro even if they passed out of the best Maltese university. Well said Alex about people's tolerance for traffic, the heat, the construction, etc. Whoever is making a huge life decision like moving to another country, you must VISIT the country first and do your research, these days there are endless ways of researching these things. Life anywhere you live is what YOU make it, stop complaining people and be grateful for what you do have and if you hate something so much, then change it... not always easy but it is possible. I am Maltese born and Canadian raised and visited Malta a lot growing up and just returned for a visit last year after a 32 year absence, yes it has changed... but so has Canada and every other place in the world I'm sure, it's called evolution and change is part of life. I agree with the hot summer weather and sea losing it's sparkle after a while and the traffic!! ugh!! but there are so many hidden gems in Malta that my cousin showed me and I am excited to return for another holiday perhaps next winter (preferably Christmas time) and then you and I are making a video together!! 😀
